ccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2014 National Diabetes Statistics Report, an estimated 29 million people in the United States have diabetes. Of those 29 million, 1.7 million people aged 20 years or older were newly diagnosed in 2012. As if those numbers aren’t disturbing enough, another 86 million adults in the U.S. – more than one in three – have prediabetes. It’s clear that the number of diagnoses of the disease is on the rise. So what, if anything, can we do to prevent it? You’d probably agree that the key to prevention is to truly understand what diabetes is and what causes it. Snippetz knows your health is important to you (it’s important to us, too) so we decided to do the research to help educate you about diabetes.

Diabetes – technically termed diabetes mellitus – is a group of metabolic diseases that cause a person to have high blood sugar (blood glucose). High blood sugar can result from an inadequate production of insulin or because the body’s cells do not respond properly to insulin, and sometimes it’s a combination of both.

Type 2 diabetes, formerly called non-insulin-dependent or adult-onset diabetes mellitus, accounts for about 90 to 95 percent of all diagnosed diabetes cases. This type usually develops due to an insulin resistance, a disorder in which the cells within the muscles, liver, and fatty tissue don’t metabolize insulin properly. This results in an increased need for insulin and the beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin can’t keep up with the higher demand. In some people, a resistance to insulin plays a larger role in the development of diabetes than the lack of the beta cells to produce sufficient insulin, and for others, it’s just the opposite.

Prediabetes refers to a blood glucose level that is above normal but not high enough to be classified as diabetes.

There are three main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes, formerly called insulindependent or juvenile-onset diabetes mellitus, accounts for about 5 percent of all diagnosed diabetes cases. It develops when the cells that produce the hormone insulin (called the beta cells) in the pancreas are destroyed. That destruction is initiated by the body’s immune system and either lim-

Gestational diabetes is a form of glucose intolerance that some pregnant women develop during the second or third trimester. Elevated blood sugar levels can pose a danger to both the mother and the baby. After giving birth, about 5 to 10 percent of women will continue to experience elevated blood glucose levels, which usually results in a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.

Willis wasn’t the first person to notice the “sweet” characteristic of a diabetic’s blood and urine. In fact, the ancient Chinese people noticed that ants were attracted to some people’s urine because it was sweet. Although they hadn’t fully identified what the disease was, they did give the phenomenon a name: “sweet urine disease.”

WHO IS AT RISK FOR DEVELOPING DIABETES? There are several known risk factors that could lead to the development of type 1 diabetes including the following: • Anyone with a relative who has been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes has a slightly increased risk. • The presence of a certain gene can indicate an increased risk. • People who live further away from the equator tend to have a higher risk than people living closer to it. • Type 1 diabetes can appear at any age but there are two peaks at when it tends to occur more: between 4 and 7 years old, and between 10 and 14 years old.

During the second century A.D., Aretus the Cappadocian, a Greek physician, noted that people with the disease experienced increased urination, called polyuria today. He named the ailment “diabetes,” which means “siphon” in Greek.

There is an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes for people who are overweight or obese. Coupled with physical inactivity and eating the wrong types

In 1675, the word “mellitus” was added to the condition’s name by Thomas Willis.

WHY IS IT CALLED DIABETES MELLITUS?

He noted that the blood and urine of people with diabetes contained excess glucose, which he deduced would make it sweet like honey. In Latin, “mel” means “honey” so it fit nicely with what he had observed.

of foods also increases that risk. In fact, drinking one can of non-diet soda per day can increase that risk but 22 percent, according to one study. Additionally, the risk increases as people get older and for men who testosterone levels are low. Other risk factors include smoking, depression and stress, and chronic lack of sleep.

FICTION Developing type 1 diabetes doesn’t depend on a person’s weight. Eating foods that are high in calories and fat can lead a person to become overweight, which can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes but there is nothing definite about that. The majority of overweight people do not develop type 2 diabetes and many people that do develop it were never overweight to begin with.

Just as it sounds, gestational diabetes only occurs during pregnancy. Scientists have found that women whose diets before getting pregnant were high in animal fat and cholesterol were at a higher risk than women whose diets were lower in those two elements.

HOW CAN DIABETES BE PREVENTED? There is no known way to prevent type 1 diabetes, although several clinical trials are currently underway with subsequent studies planned. The Diabetes Prevention Program is a major research study conducted by the CDC and has shown that, for people at high risk of developing diabetes, lifestyle interventions (like a change in diet) that lead to weight loss and increased physical activity prevented or delayed type 2 diabetes. In some instances, blood glucose levels of those individuals at a higher risk were returned to within the normal range.

FACT OR FICTION? Rumors about diabetes are common and it’s easy to get confused about what’s fact and what’s fiction. Here’s a bit of clarity into some of those rumors.

Another example can be perception of self. Many people may inherit a perception that they’re supposed to be and present themselves in a certain manner. That manner of presentation may be the opposite of individuality. The person doing this may suppress her or his own creativity and individuality to maintain a certain presentation. This would create much stress in the emotions and mind.

ife can become very stressful; almost everyone knows that. That stress can accumulate due to family difficulties, financial difficulties, career or job stresses, or any other number of reasons. The question is: is that just an expected side of life or is it something to resolve? Many people are taught that life is stressful or painful. It is true almost everyone experiences some sort of negative stress or pain at some point. But stress and pain never need to be a common part of everyday life. Negative stress is chronic and accumulated so much that it impacts the emotions, mental activity, and then physically. The physical symptoms can be headaches, tight back and neck muscles,

lack of focus, blurred vision, and then issues with the blood, brain, and heart. Dealing with these symptoms ongoing can certainly interfere in one’s quality of life. What is a solution?

Those are two simple examples and there could be hundreds more of why a person may experience chronic stress. Another solution can be the Life Energy Flow Tai Yi treatment, Sea Wave.

Aside from looking at current activities that contribute or create the stress, one can look at patterns and beliefs. Many people inherit certain patterns and beliefs about life from their parents. This may be conscious or subconscious. It’s important to first search out if this occurred and begin making different choices that do not abide by those same negative patterns.

This treatment assists a person in feeling a sense of calmness and mental/ emotional clarity. He or she will begin feeling less stress and begin understanding the underlying cause of the stress. Most importantly, he or she will begin understanding what to do about it. This allows for one to begin making different choices to create a higher quality life. A life in which stress is not often felt and enjoyment is most often experienced. For additional information, please contact: Tami Urbanek of Empowerment Through Healing 719•488•2290

THE 5000+ PERCENT ADVANTAGE PART 4.4 PROCEED FORWARD: IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS By Dr. Ron D. Ross

“How many hours must a flight student fly before he can solo?” I asked my flight-instructor brother. “Around 17 hours of training and he or she must make at least 50 takeoffs and landings.” In other words, you do not learn how to fly by reading books and hanging out at the airport talking to pilots. Yes, there are books to read and tests to take, but you will never be handed the control of an airplane until you are fully trained and skilled at flying it yourself. When I was a kid there were what we called Beatnik jokes. particular field. He arrived at this conclusion by studying the lives of extremely successful people.

He tells the story of a team of psychologists in Berlin, Germany who, in the early 1990s, studied the practice of violin students in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Each of the subjects was asked, “Over the course of your entire career, ever since you first picked up the violin, how many hours have you practiced?”

FACT AND FUN FILLED PAGES ONLINE!

The answers were revealing. All of the violinists had begun playing at roughly five years of age with similar practice times. But as they grew older, things changed. At age eight, practice times began to deviate and by age twenty, the elite performers had averaged more than 10,000 hours of practice each, while the less able performers had only 4,000 hours of practice.

GREEN GOODNESS

I

f you’ve embraced the idea of cooking seasonally, or if you’ve found a farmers market that makes you happy, then you know there are seasons that are somewhat barren. When eating seasonally, sometimes there’s not a cornucopia of choices when it comes to fresh, locally sourced produce. The whole idea of cooking and eating seasonally is to adapt our menus accordingly. But as spring approaches and the weather thaws, we know that soon there will be stalls and stalls of delicious food. While we’re waiting for spring peas and new potatoes, we still canenjoy some cool-season delicacies. Greens of all kinds thrive best in cooler weather. Many also mature quickly. That’s why in early spring you’ll find them almost everywhere. From lettuce and spinach to collards and chard, these leafy foods are at their best when in-season and freshpicked. They are tender and sweeter, and often hardly resemble the same vegetable you find in the grocery in the middle of summer. The greens family of cruciferous vegetables also includes broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage. They’re a great way to add antioxidants to your diet, and contain significant amounts of vitamins A and C, as well as potassium and fiber. If you’re planning a vegetable garden, planting greens is an easy way to get it started. In the coldest regions, some varieties of greens can be planted after the threat of frost and will be ready by late spring. In more temperate regions, they can be planted in the fall. Once the plants are established, they can take a few days of freezing temperatures. You can even plant them in already established perennial beds. Some, like chard and kale, are quite lovely to look at. When cooking with greens, the sky’s the limit. They can be sauteed, pureed, steamed and tossed in salads. With many varieties to choose from, now is the time to replace the spinach in your standard recipes with collards, turnip greens or kale. You also might

1. Bring a big pot of salted water to a boil, and cook pasta according to package directions. Drain quickly, reserving a bit of cooking water, and set aside. 2. Cut out center rib of each collard green. Stack a few greens at a time and roll them up into a cigar-like shape. Slice across the roll as thinly as possible (1/8 to 1/4 inch). Shake up the greens and give them a few chops so the strands aren’t so long. 3. Heat a heavy-bottomed 12-inch skillet over medium heat and toast pine nuts until they start to turn golden and fragrant. Pour nuts out of skillet and save for later. 4. Return skillet to medium heat and pour in 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Sprinkle in a big pinch of red pepper flakes, garlic and lemon zest, and stir. Once oil is hot enough to shimmer, toss in all the collard greens. Sprinkle greens with salt, pepper and agave or honey. Saute greens for about three minutes, stirring often to keep from clumping. 5. Remove pan from heat. Scoop greens into pasta pot and toss with another drizzle of olive oil, adding pasta water if necessary. Divide onto plates, top with pine nuts and Parmesan shavings, and serve with two big lemon wedges per person. Serves 4.

ARONIA IN THE SPOTLIGHT

A

ronia or Chokeberry bush is a cold hardy deciduous shrub that has dark green glossy foliage in the summer and delicate white flowers in the spring. It’s not the same as the Chokecherry we all have in our backyards. It is a multiseason shrub that is often overlooked. Aronia is very adaptable to light and water conditions. It can do well anywhere from full sun to part sun to shade! It has moderate water requirements, but it will also tolerate a wet site. This can make it a good option for a full sun and wet site or a shady and slightly dry site, where many plants won’t grow.

Aronia is a great landscape shrub because it has something of interest for every season. In the late summer it is covered with beautiful plump dark purple or red fruit, which is why it is in the spotlight right now! Now all of the dangling fruit which, depending on the variety, are black to dark red are starting to ripen, and if their not harvested they will persist well into winter making it highly ornamental. As the days and nights get cooler the foliage turns to orange and then red which really sets up an eye-catching contrast of colors. The Chokeberry bush has a 4-6’ height and spread and it is known to sucker, so make sure and place it where suckering would be desirable, like a natural area away from your lawn.

SNIPPETZ™ HEALTH AND WELLNESS head under the skull. What can be done for this, and is it dangerous to ignore and maybe just wear a collar? A doctor in Florida wanted to do surgery on my neck when I went for back surgery three years ago. I’m 76 years old. I have no pain or weakness, just a light ringing in my head. -- S.M.

EYEGLASSES CAUSE SKIN TO BLISTER DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently purchased two new pairs of prescription eyeglasses that are in plastic frames. Forty-eight hours after I began wearing the first pair, the bridge of my nose became very red, and small, flat blisters appeared. The same behind both ears -- anywhere the plastic touched my skin. I got this to heal with cortisone cream, and a week later I tried the other pair. This time, the reaction came within about 14 hours and involved swelling of my nose as well as the blistering and bright redness.

ANSWER: The snapping sound is likely made by one of the tendons in your neck moving over a bony prominence. If it isn’t causing any pain, I don’t think you need to do anything about it. I certainly would not recommend neck surgery. I reserve consideration of neck surgery for people with severe neurologic symptoms, such as pain and weakness, and those whose function is limited. A warm pack on the back of the neck probably is as good a treatment as anything. ***

MOMENTS IN TIME • On March 16, 1751, future President James Madison is born in Virginia. Madison, one of the key drafters of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, became America’s fourth president in 1809 and is considered the Father of the Constitution.

• On March 18, 1911, Irving Berlin copyrights the biggest pop song of the early 20th century, “Alexander’s Ragtime Band.â€? The song was easier to play than Joplin’s “The Entertainer,â€? which encouraged sheet music sales. Those topped 1.5 million copies in the first 18 months.

• On March 21, 1804, French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte enacts a new legal framework for France, known as the “Napoleonic Code.â€? The Code strengthened the authority of men over their families, deprived women of any individual rights and reduced the rights of illegitimate children. • On March 20, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln’s youngest sons, Willie and Tad, are diagnosed with the measles. The boys recovered, but in 1862, Willie died from typhoid fever. Tad died at age 18 in 1871. Lincoln’s second son, Eddie, died before his fourth birthday. Only the first born, Robert, lived to an advanced age; he passed away in 1926 at age 82.

• On March 19, 1953, the movie world’s most prestigious honors, the Academy Awards, are telecast for the first time, on NBC. Previously, audiences at home could only listen on the radio. The sealed envelope system began 12 years earlier after a newspaper printed the results prematurely. • On March 22, 1983, the Pentagon awards a production contract to develop 55,000 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV), nicknamed the Humvee. In 1992, a 10,000-pound civilian version, known as the Hummer, went on sale.

t’s probably not surprising to hear that in 2012, the IRS assessed 37.9 million penalties against taxpayers that totaled a whopping $26.8 billion. Many of those taxpayers are typically within compliance, year after year. As a reward, the IRS offers a one time, first time abatement penalty waiver, to those taxpayers with a history of clean compliance with the IRS.

Unfortunately, these waivers are infrequently requested because most taxpayers and many tax professionals are unaware they exist. Penalty waivers aren’t available for every type of delinquency. However, they are available to individuals with failure to file or failure to pay penalties, and businesses with a failure to deposit penalty (payroll taxes). These account for 74% of the penalties assessed in 2012. That’s about 28 million taxpayers who are possibly eligible for first-

SNIPPETZ™ BUSINESS SECTION to understand those choices we can make better financial decisions. Every time we choose to spend money we are making a choice. We are giving up other opportunities in order to fulfill a by Chuck Maher, CFP® current need or want. Is it better ...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES to buy new furniture or set aside the money for the kid’s college education? I don’t know the answer. That is your choice. But I do know it is better to be in control of your decisions than to allow circumstances, or worse, short term wants to drive your choices.

THE RULES OF MONEY

Q

uickly now, which would you rather have at the end of 31 days – a million dollars or a penny that has been doubled each and every day? If you are like most people you would have chosen the $1 million. Unfortunately, like most people you would have chosen poorly. That humble penny, doubling every day, would have grown to over $10 million -$10,737,418.24 to be exact. Don’t believe me? Do the math. One cent becomes two, two becomes four, four becomes eight, eight sixteen and on it goes until 5 million becomes 10 million. That is the power of compounded interest, a power that is often overlooked and grossly misunderstood when we talk about money. Here are a few other rules of money that are oftentimes overlooked.

IS IT A NEED OR IS IT A WANT How we choose to spend our money is a choice. By understanding the difference between what is really needed and what it is we want we can avoid becoming a victim of circumstance. Our financial needs are really quite simple, food, shelter and clothing. Everything else is merely a want; however, our wants can be endless. Too often I find that many have put themselves in an unnecessary position of hardship (read debt) because they failed to realize the difference between what is needed and what is wanted. By making the choice to live well within your means you can put yourself in the position of financial control. And that is a strong financial place to be.

THE ENDLESS SEARCH FOR MORE It is only natural to want a better life. A raise at work or a new position may well make it possible to get a nicer home or a better car. Unfortunately, for too many, it becomes far too easy to presume on the future – that those raises and promotions will continue – and establish a lifestyle based upon those assumptions. When the raises and promotions don’t come they oftentimes put themselves in the position where debt is used to satisfy their expectations. Thus creating a lifestyle, based upon debt, that can lead to financial ruin. It is better to find happiness somewhere other than in our possessions.

EVERY OPTION HAS COSTS By understanding the opportunity costs of our financial choices and making the time

INVESTING FROM A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE

SUNKEN COST MYTH We have all been in situations where we have incurred expenses that can never be recovered. Whether it be a car that needs a new motor, an investment that only goes South or something else that seems to require an endless stream of money. The sunken cost myth is just that, a myth, a belief that somehow if we only invest more time, more money or more effort we can recover what has been promised. That is a fallacy. Don’t throw good money after bad. In investing, I find too often investors will hold onto an investment and even invest more with the hopes that they will at some point at least break even. The cost unfortunately was lost opportunity and better use of resources. Make your decision to invest your time, your money, or your talents based upon the facts today and not upon your choices made yesterday.

RISK

transportation of the remains, cremation, use of pallbearers, embalming and a limo.

With every financial choice comes risk, especially when we make the decision to invest. When we accept a greater risk with our investments it is reasonable to expect a potentially greater return. If you choose to invest in US government bonds you can expect a high degree of safety and a very low return on your investment. When you invest in a US corporation you have the opportunity for a much higher return, however, that return carries with it the risk of losing some or even all of your investment. I would encourage you to avoid investments that promise high guaranteed returns with little or no risk. There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch. Sadly money does not come with operating instructions. For most of us a lot of time was spent on learning how to make money. Unfortunately, throughout that education, not a lot of time was spent on how to manage money and use it effectively. Make the time to learn how to make sound financial choices. In the long-term you’ll be glad you did. “…I know indeed how to live in humble circumstances; I know how to live with abundance…I have strength for everything through him who empowers me.” Philippians 4:12-13 Chuck Maher is a Certified Financial PlannerTM practitioner specializing in Christian values based financial planning and investing. FUNERAL PLANNING Planning a funeral isn’t anyone’s idea of fun, but it’s one of those life obligations that need to be done -- and preferably in advance. Early planning can help ease some of the stresses at a very difficult time. Planning ahead should include getting pricing in advance. Your biggest consumer protection is a federal law called The Funeral Rule -- it requires that funeral directors give you itemized prices, either in person, over the phone or in the mail. Most estimates will start with a basic services fee, which is the base price applicable to all burials. While funeral homes often have packages of services, you’re not required to purchase a whole funeral package. You’ll need to consider costs for a casket, a headstone, a plot in a cemetery, multiple death certificates, flowers, an organist, a member of the clergy and obituary notices. Optional services might include using the funeral home for the viewing,

15

The most expensive part of a funeral is the casket. A funeral director cannot refuse to use a casket you bought somewhere else. If cremation is chosen, the funeral home must make a selection of alternate caskets available. When buying a casket, the funeral home is required to show you the price list before you see the caskets. This is helpful so you don’t automatically want the fanciest one you see in the showroom. You’ll have an idea of what they cost in advance. If some of the lessexpensive caskets on the list aren’t in the showroom, ask to see them anyway. You need to know all your options. If you prepay for a funeral plan, check your state laws to ensure that the money will be kept in a state regulated trust. Make a list and compare prices before you make any final decisions. Knowing your rights and the costs in advance will help guard against emotional decisions at the last minute. For more information on funerals, go to search.usa.gov and put “funeral” in the search box. If you run into problems with a funeral home, these state and local consumer protection agencies can help you with questions about funerals: usa.gov/directory/stateconsumer/index.shtml. Or call the Funeral Service Consumer Assistance Program at 1-800-662-7666. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
