ven if you know nothing about American history, chances are good that you’ve heard the name Al Capone. He has been the subject of numerous books, articles and movies, including a segment from Mario Puzo’s “The Godfather.” The idea that a man essentially chose the gangster lifestyle rather than having been brought up in rough circumstances and being forced into it is only part of the draw Capone seems to have. He was incredibly successful and incredibly

brutal. With such an interesting character in our country’s history, it would be irresponsible of us here at Snippetz not to investigate more about Capone. And so, we invite you to come with us as we take a look at the life of a man who chose to live on the wrong side of the law.

During this time, Capone met Mae Josephine Coughlin. The pair hit it off bigtime and in December, 1918, Mae gave birth to the couple’s son, Albert Francis Capone. Later that month, on December 30, the Al and Mae got married, after obtaining written consent from his parents since he was only 19 (the legal age to marry at the time was 21).

EARLY LIFE

The Place to Find Local Businesses on the Go!... 9

Al Capone was born Alphonse Gabriel Capone in Brooklyn, New York on January 17, 1899. His parents, Gabriele Capone and Teresina Raiola, were Italian immigrants who came to the United States in 1893. Al was one of nine children and by all accounts, seemed to be just a regular kid.

About a year later, Torrio, who had moved to Chicago to help run the city’s massive brothel business, extended the invitation for the Capone family to move to Chicago. Al began his career there as a bouncer in a brothel. Rumor has it that either Capone or another gangster named Frankie Yale assassinated Torrio’s boss, Big Jim Colosimo in 1920. His death meant Torrio was the new kingpin.

Capone’s father was a barber and his mother was a seamstress. The family initially settled in a neighborhood by the Navy yard but soon, they moved into an apartment over Gabriele’s barbershop in a better part of town. Their new neighborhood was more culturally diverse, with people representing many different ethnicities.

Capone attended Catholic school and many have theorized that the inadequate education he received, coupled with corporeal punishment delivered for a wide variety of offenses played a role in his later affinity towards violence. Although he was said to have been a decent student despite his school’s shortfalls, Capone was expelled when he was 14 for hitting a female teacher. Supposedly, she hit him first but whether or not that was true, Capone was thrown out and never went back.

Following his expulsion, Capone made the acquaintance of a notorious gangster named Johnny Torrio.

to Capone who became the new boss of the Chicago crime syndicate, including gambling, prostitution and bootlegging. Capone maintained his status by systematically killing his rivals and other rival gangs. Torrio owned the Four Deuces in Chicago’s Levee area, which served as the headquarters for his rackets as well as a speakeasy, gambling joint and brothel. He recognized Capone’s abilities and after deciding that Al had enough experience under his belt, Torrio dubbed him a partner and Capone took over as the Four Deuces’ manager.

NAUGHTY, NAUGHTY When authorities began to crack down on racketeering in Chicago, Capone moved to Cicero. Capone liked to maintain an air of respectability and using his power, he managed to pull off the farce that he was just an ordinary businessman. But his temper gave him away. When his friend Jack Guzik was jumped by a small-time gangster wannabe, Capone tracked the man down and shot and killed him in a bar. Although the case seemed pretty cut and dry, a mysterious lack

of witnesses kept Capone from having to answer for the murder. This behavior became commonplace, with Capone masterminding attacks against anyone who had done him or his friends wrong. He was behind two separate events that came to be known as The Adonis Club Massacre and the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. Both incidents involved the killing of rival gangs or enemies of Capone or his friends. But as usual, a lack of evidence kept Capone from being charged.

CAPONE’S UNDOING Even with his long history of violence, Capone’s arrest finally came because he hadn’t been paying taxes on his illegal businesses. He attended a “gangsters” conference in May 1929, after which he went out to see a movie. He was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon and separate charges were drawn up for his tax evasion and Prohibition violations. By this time, his empire was said to be worth, over $62,000,000. An investigation into Capone’s tax liability followed and the grand jury

handed down an indictment with 22 counts of tax evasion, totaling more than $200,000. He and 68 other members of his gang were charged with 5,000 separate violations against the Volstead Act, formally known as the National Prohibition Act. On October 17, 1931, Capone was found guilty of several counts of tax evasion and sentenced to 11 years in prison, $50,000 in fines and $30,000 in court costs. Capone served his first stint in a prison in Atlanta but was transferred to Alcatraz in August, 1934.

• Following one such game, Capone accidentally shot himself with his .38 revolver as he was getting into his car to leave. The bullet hit both of his legs, and became lodged in the left one.

Due to a case of untreated syphilis, Capone’s health deteriorated quickly. He was released due to good behavior in November 1939. When he was released, his cognitive abilities were said to be that of a 12-year-old.

• In the first prison where he began his sentence, Capone used his charm and connections to gain special privileges from the guards there. He managed to deck out his room with rugs, a mirror, a few lamps, a typewriter and a set of encyclopedias.

Capone died on January 25, 1947.

• On December 8, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt used Al Capone’s specially-made bullet-proof Cadillac town car to make his trip to address Congress about the attack on Pearl Harbor, which had occurred the day before.

• Ever the savvy businessman, Capone enjoyed the occasional round of golf. His young caddy Tim Sullivan recalled the Capone and his gangster cronies sometimes made bets of $500 per hole.

• Capone got the nickname “Scarface” after an altercation with Frank Gallucio, the brother of a woman he inadvertently insulted one night outside a night club. Gallucio slashed Capone’s face, leaving three distinctive scars that Capone often tried to hide. • It was rumored that any business owner who refused to pay for Capone’s protection would likely have his business mysteriously blown up. • Capone wasn’t always into illegal activities; after marrying Mae, he settled down as a bookkeeper but soon returned to the gangster lifestyle.

SNIPPETZ™ WEEKLY MAGAZINE Body Combat began its warm-up, I really began having doubts. As we’re kicking, punching, and shuffling, I began thinking, “I can’t do this!” As I was having that thought, my body immediately became fatigued. I started shifting my thought to, “I CAN do this! It’s NOT that hard!” I immediately felt my body began to energize. This occurred about three times back and forth. I finished Body Combat.

“I CAN’T DO IT!”

R

ecently, I’ve been hearing my grandson say, “I can’t do it!” when he’s trying to do something. That something could be putting on his shoe, zipping his pants, putting something in a package of some sort. It’s always a physical activity he’s trying. I wondered, how many adults say that statement too? Perhaps an adult would use different words than a three-year-old, but the intent may be the same. When we are faced with challenges, how many of us say, “I can’t make it. It won’t work. It’s impossible. Things will never change”? Any of

If you find that you say, “I can’t do this!” in any way, take it to the physical. Most might say they can’t do something when it’s in moving beyond an emotional or mental is-

Our beliefs are so strong. About a year and a half ago, I began taking a full body strength training class called Body Pump. It’s an hour of ‘high rep/low weight’ strength training. You can do about 800 reps in one hour. About a year ago, I decided to take my favorite class, Body Combat (a Mixed Martial Arts inspired cardio workout) right after Body Pump. So two hours of intense exercise. Could I do it? I’d never done it before. As Body Pump ended, I was having doubts about doing Body Combat right after. As

SUNCHOKE CHIPS WITH PARMESAN AND PARSLEY

MORE THAN SKIN DEEP “What is that?” This is what someone is sure to ask you at the checkout counter when you load your Jerusalem Artichoke, better known as a Sunchoke, on the conveyor. You’ll proudly do a little promotional pitch for the vegetable. “You should try them. They’re delicious! Like a cross between an artichoke heart and a potato.” Like many tubers, sunchokes look a little strange. But when it comes to food, looks often can be deceiving. A sunchoke is the tasty, knobby root of a sunflower. Until recently, this native of North America was more popular in Europe than in the United States. The sunchoke is a hardy perennial that can grow in a variety of conditions, and is not frost tender. With water shortages and the growing cost of agriculture, farmers were looking for ecologically sustainable crops, and the sunchoke fit their needs. Sunchokes now are being grown both commercially and by home gardeners. Many small organic farms also are successfully growing sunchokes, so look for them at farm stands and farmers’ markets (they resemble a ginger root). The crop does have its downside: It has a tendency to grow wild, and can be invasive, presenting challenges for farmers and backyard gardeners alike. As a healthy addition to our diet, sunchokes are a low-glycemic food, and possess a significant amount of protein and very little starch. They also are rich in inulin, a natural fructose type of carbohydrate. Inulin is thought to be better tolerated by those with Type 2 diabetes. When shopping for sunchokes, look for firm, brown-colored tubers. If they’re beginning to darken, they’re not fresh. After you get them home, store in paper towels in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Don’t wash your sunchokes until you’re ready to use them, as moisture can lead to spoiling. Sunchokes have a thin skin and don’t need to be peeled. Sunchokes are extremely versatile. You can use them in the same way you typically use a potato. They have a crunchy texture and are delicious raw. When roasted, their nutty flavor comes out. Steamed sunchokes can stand alone or mixed with other vegetables, used in a gratin or to make a delicious soup. If you’re using sunchokes in a creamed

1. Fill a large bowl with cold water. Slice sunchokes into thin rounds (about 1/16 inch thick), immediately dropping into bowl of water to prevent browning. Rinse and drain 3 times to remove some of the starch for a crisper chip. Pat dry with paper towels. 2. Pour enough oil into large deep skillet to reach depth of 1/2 inch. Submerge bulb of deep-fry thermometer into oil; lean top of thermometer against skillet rim. Heat oil to 375 F. Mix salt, Parmesan and parsley together in small bowl, blending well, and set aside. 3. Working in batches, fry sunchoke slices until golden brown, 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally. Using a skimmer, transfer chips to a wire rack placed over a paperlined baking pan to drain. While chips are hot, sprinkle with the Parmesan and salt mixture. The chips won’t be crispy immediately out of the fryer, so wait a few minutes for them to crisp up. Mound chips in bowl and serve. A CUT ABOVE DRYWALL

Here are some ideas to get you started:

GETTING RID OF CLUTTER

W

hether you plan to stay in your home forever or sell it and move to smaller accommodations, getting rid of clutter can make your life easier and safer. Here are a few very good reasons to declutter: • Fewer opportunities to trip and fall. Consider what happens when a senior falls and breaks a bone: hospital, rehab and the question of where to go afterward. Can the senior go home and live independently again? Sometimes the answer is no. • Organizing makes things easier to find. • Clutter can be dangerous. If emergency services have to come to your house, will they be able to get to you? Or are pathways in rooms too narrow? Taken to an extreme, holding on to too many possessions can be called hoarding, and sometimes social services will step in to deal with it. Your

She tried hard to make her discussion of this children’s book seem intellectual, but with each tortured sentence she revealed a shallowness of intellect that destroyed almost any chance of winning the regional

SNIPPETZ™ HEALTH AND WELLNESS When I got up, all the bruising and discoloration was gone! She told me that there would still be some discoloration if it had been a broken blood vessel, so therefore it was a mystery. -- C.C. ANSWER: I agree with the nurse that it likely was a broken blood vessel, which can happen spontaneously to anyone. Once the blood is under the skin, it gets cleaned away by cells with enzymes that break down the blood. The color typically goes from dark red to green to yellow. This way, we can tell approximately how old a bruise is.

MYSTERY BRUISE APPEARS, VANISHES AS IF BY MAGIC DEAR DR. ROACH: I have just returned from seeing my doctor, and was told that the cause of what I experienced is a mystery! In the late afternoon, my husband and I were sitting at the kitchen table. He noticed that a bruise was forming on my right temple -- a dime-size purple mark, with a bump near the hairline. Over the next few hours the bruise grew larger, with red discoloration down the right side of my face, to the jaw. I had not been injured in any way, and it did not hurt! I called a 24-hour advice nurse, and was told I probably had broken a blood vessel. The next day, I called my doctor for an appointment, just to be on the safe side, but my doctor didn’t have anything to look at.

Very superficial bleeding also can move, as the blood literally gets pulled by gravity (which is why you had a darkening down to the jaw). I suspect that while asleep, the remainder got pulled into the hairline or lower down, where it could no longer be seen. Many people have come down with another mysterious illness, chronic fatigue syndrome. The booklet on it explains the illness and its treatment. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Roach -- No. 304W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. • On Feb. 1, 1885, John Taylor, the president of the Mormon Latter-day Saints Church, goes “undergroundâ€? to avoid arrest and continue resisting federal demands for polygamy. Inevitably, these two goals conflicted.
