s a kid, you may remember going to the movies and seeing the words “Based on a true story” projected on the screen before the start of a film. Those words may have led you to believe that what you were seeing was factually accurate . . . at least for the most part. The interesting thing is that, when a movie is based on a true story, there is no hard and fast rule that says how much of that movie needs to be factual and how much “creative license” Hollywood filmmakers can take to increase the sales at the box office. part of the movie is the fact that the main character existed at some point in time. Or maybe the whole movie is basically true, with just a few changes here and there. The interesting thing about Hollywood is that there is often so much work that goes into the production of just one film. So it’s a fair assumption that research would be done to make sure the events, costumes, accents, settings, etc. that were depicted in each film “based on a true story” would actually align with what happened. However, that’s not how Hollywood works. Snippetz has rounded up some interesting cases of when movies proved that accuracy isn’t as important as selling movie tickets.
GLADIATOR In 2000, Gladiator introduced fans to Marcus and Commodus Aurelius, a Roman emperor and his son that lived in the middle part of the second century A.D. That’s about where the similarities between history and the movie stop. Commodus is depicted as a conniving, vengeful, ambitious brat who smothers his father in order to ascend to the throne. In reality, Marcus actually gave Commodus the rank of Imperator, which basically gave equal power to the teen (and yes, he was 15 at the time, not an adult as the film shows). Marcus was not murdered by his son, either. He died of natural causes.
BRAVEHEART Even though the film was a hit when it was released in 1995, Braveheart is actually one of the biggest offenders when it comes to historical inaccuracies. First off, the kilts that William Wallace (played by Mel Gibson) and his fellow Scotsmen wore during the movie, while symbolic of the Scottish culture, were not actually introduced to Scotland until 300 years after Wallace’s time.

The main character (who is admittedly fictional) was named Maximus Decimus Meridius and the men who captured him in the movie nicknamed him the “Spaniard.” That’s all fine and well, except that the term Spaniard originates from the Old French word “espaignart” that didn’t exist until the
In the film, Edward II is depicted as an adult and is betrothed to Isabella of France, who is also shown as an adult. In reality, Edward was only about 13 and Isabella was even younger than that. This discrepancy plays into the fictional romance that Wallace and Isabella are shown as having during the film, which results in her telling Edward I on his deathbed that she is pregnant with Wallace’s child. Of course, that never happened either.

Other Gladiator inaccuracies include battles that never happened, large catapults that the Roman army wouldn’t ever had dragged into battle, a German Shepherd dog as a soldier’s pet even though the breed didn’t exist back then, Latin inscriptions with incorrect grammar and the use of the term “fire” to signal for the archers to release their arrows. That particular word wouldn’t have been used until firearms (hence the term “fire”) were invented.
ANNA AND THE KING In this film, released in 1999, the British governess Anna Leonowens is shown as having a close relationship with King Mongkut of Thailand. It even goes so far as to hint at a budding romance between the two. In reality, the pair hardly knew each other. In fact, they had really only met a few times. As if a fictional romance with the King wasn’t enough, the movie went on to depict Anna as playing a leading role in the reform and development of Thailand. APOCALYPTO Mel Gibson just doesn’t have an eye for accuracy, it appears. As the director of this 2006 film (as well as Braveheart), he depicts the ancient Mayan culture as one of extreme violence, devoid of religion and basically lacking in any redeeming qualities. In order to save the Godless heathens from themselves, white missionaries come to their rescue in the film. Historians have long discounted beliefs such as this based on the scientific, astronomical, spiritual, agricultural and artistic accomplishments of the Mayans. Close but no cigar, Mel.
ELIZABETH This film, released in 1998 had the potential to be a really great one. But inaccuracies abound, including the fact that Bishop Stephen Gardiner, the leader of the opposition to the queen had, in reality died three years before Elizabeth was crowned. Oops. Also, during the time period in which the movie was set, Queen Elizabeth was well into her fifties, while the lovely Cate Blanchett portrays her as a thirty-something woman, deeply in

That particular movie wasn’t released until 1967, the year after Andy escaped from Shawshank Prison.

SEND HER AWAY! On my way to the gym this morning, I was listening to a local radio station’s DJs asking listeners to call in with their opinion on a recent topic that had caught the DJs’ attention. A mother was fed up with her fifteen-year-old daughter’s behavior-which consisted of smoking, skipping schools, boys, stealing, and ‘some’ drugs. The mother’s newest boyfriend was an immigration employee. From what one of the DJ’s stated on the radio, was that the mother’s boyfriend suggested that the mother should send her daughter to her biological father’s home. Hmmm….. I thought and waited for the radio personalities to continue with their discussion. The girl’s father lives in Russia, is reportedly an alcoholic, and doesn’t speak English. The fifteen-year-old girl is American, only speaks English, and is being sent to live AND work in a hostel
in Russia. This is the solution for a wayward teenager?

I felt horrified for the girl who had already been sent off and I waited to hear what some of the callers thought.
As I was hearing the DJs talk about the girl’s situation and why her mother sent her away, I wondered what avenues the mother had already tried to assist her daughter. Why was the girl so angry and obstinate that she was using drugs, skipping school, and stealing? These types of behaviors don’t JUST happen. And they don’t happen just because punishment was not used.
The first caller said, “Hell, yes, send that bad girl off! The problem is, she should have been whooped a long time ago and all that nastiness wouldn’t have happened!” The next caller said, “No, she shouldn’t be sent off to Russia! Her mother should be dealing with this!”
These types of behaviors occur for many different reasons. Lack of discipline and boundary setting can be one of them. Lack of compassion, bonding, and connection are usually the underlying is-

I would do whatever it takes to stay actively and closely involved to help my daughter move beyond her anger and pain. That’s what I would do.

1. Preheat oven to 400 F. Spray three baking sheets with butter-flavored cooking spray. 2. In a large bowl, combine margarine and sugar substitute. Stir in egg, vanilla extract and maple syrup. Add flour, graham cracker crumbs and baking powder. Mix well to combine. Fold in pecans. Drop by teaspoonful onto prepared baking sheets to form 36 cookies. Flatten cookies with a fork. 3. Bake for 5 to 7 minutes or until light golden brown. Remove cookies from baking sheets and place on wire racks to cool. or thousands of years, people have marked the start of the new year. The new year is a new beginning ... a time when we honor the past and look forward to what will come. This also is a time for ceremony and celebration. In 1904, the first-ever celebration of New Year’s Eve in Times Square took place. For more than 100 years, New Yorkers have continued this famous party, while across the nation, countless other festivities, big and small herald a new year. Whether it is a quiet night of prayer, reflection and reverence or a rowdy affair with fireworks, we see New Year’s as a time to feel hopeful and inspired. Cultures around the world use different calendars to determine the start of the new year, but all have traditions that celebrate the event. New Year’s customs range from the Japanese tradition of sending thankyou cards to friends and relatives, to Estonia’s fabulous feast of 12 meals on New Year’s Eve. Each meal is believed to impart strength for the following year. There are customs around the world that express our human desire for good fortune or special blessings in the coming year. In Ireland, single women place springs of mistletoe under their pillows in hopes of finding a husband. The Chinese and Japanese perform a special cleaning of their homes, to rid themselves of bad luck. Some cultures burn effigies that represent the misfortune of the previous year. There also are traditional foods that are prepared on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Many of these dishes symbolize prosperity and fortune. Foods such as pig and fish are eaten in hopes of having a bountiful future. Many New Year recipes have cakes or puddings with some kind of treasure buried within. Some cultures put special significance on round food or baked goods because the shape represents a completed circle or course of time. In the United States families celebrate in countless ways with food and drink customs handed down from one generation to the next. My recipe for Slow Cooker Country Pork Ribs with Sauerkraut and Apples is popular in the Northeast, while in the South, black-eyed peas and greens are often served on New Year’s day. Of course, there is absolutely nothing wrong with starting new traditions that

T
he Department of Health and Human Services was asked to survey three things from lists of Medicaid health-care providers: learn which providers could offer appointments to those with Medicaid, assess the wait times for care and find any differences between the availability between primary-care providers and specialists. The results aren’t pretty. Half of providers could not offer appointments, either because they weren’t at the location where they were listed (43 percent), or because they weren’t participating in the plan or because they weren’t taking new patients (8 percent). Some providers couldn’t be found: No one had heard of them, or they had retired or left years ago. For those not accepting new patients, they were retiring, they had too many patients already or they were tired of all the no-shows for

Of those providers who did offer appointments, the median wait time was two weeks, but one-fourth had appointment times more than a month away. Ten percent only offered appointments more than two months away. (Most of the states have requirements that patients be able to get care within one month.)

Before concluding that alcohol is the cause of the pancreatitis, it’s important to make sure there is nothing blocking the pancreatic and common bile duct, such as a stone or tumor. The CT scan is good, but if there is doubt, an endoscopy may need to be performed.
PANCREATITIS MEANS GIVING UP ALCOHOL DEAR DR. ROACH: I went to the emergency ward with severe chest pains and bloating. I was sure I was having a heart attack. After tests, a CT scan revealed I had pancreatitis; also, my potassium was low and sodium was critically low. I am 62, 5 feet, 9 inches tall and weigh 210; I have Type 2 diabetes with an A1C of 6.7 and high blood pressure. I was discharged after four days with no restrictions other than to eat light and refrain from alcohol 100 percent for the rest of my life to avoid another occurrence. I had never heard of pancreatitis, and it was devastating news to me. I make wine, and have for years. I do not drink anything except wine, and the thought of never being able to drink again is very disturbing. Is there a possibility that I may be able to drink wine again in the future? The doctor’s assessment seemed pretty harsh to me. -- J.C. ANSWER: Acute pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas, an organ that makes digestive enzymes and insulin. Acute pancreatitis can be very severe, even life-threatening on occasion. There are many causes, but the most common in North America are gallstones and alcohol. The diagnosis is made from the history and physical exam, and an elevated pancreas enzyme level, usually amylase or lipase. These often are elevated into the thousand range. A CT scan also can help confirm the diagnosis.
If your doctor determined that the cause is alcohol, then I’m afraid I have to agree that no amount of alcohol is safe. Drinking even modest amounts of wine, even months or years later, could bring about pancreatitis again. In addition to the pain and suffering that go with an episode, the more episodes of acute pancreatitis you have, the more likely you are to develop chronic pancreatitis (with constant pain), pancreatic insufficiency (leading to inability to properly digest food) and worsen your diabetes. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I take the statin drug atorvastatin since my heart surgery. The sticker on the bottle reads, “Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice at any time while taking this medicine.” My cardiologist said this warning was based on rather thin clinical trials, and it was OK to continue eating one grapefruit in the morning and taking the statin at bedtime. Are there new developments on this topic? ANSWER: Grapefruit juice indeed can affect the metabolism of atorvastatin (Lipitor) and many other medications. However, the amount of grapefruit needed in order to have a significant effect is quite high -- the manufacturer recommends avoiding consumption of more than a quart (1.2 liters) of grapefruit juice a day. I agree with your cardiologist that a grapefruit is a healthy way to begin the day and is not likely to cause any problems with atorvastatin.

Tina tax forms. They also require that this information transfers with the stock if you move securities to another brokerage firm. This doesn’t always work. The classic example is a person who buys stock through an employee stock purchase program, holds on to it for twenty years, retires, moves
the stock into another account, and then sells it. Without historical cost or purchase information, the gains and subsequent taxes are impossible to accurately compute. In the past we’ve reconstructed cost information through Yahoo! Finance, which works most of the time, but good recordkeeping can prevent this exercise Homes and other real estate such as rental properties can also prove problematic. Sure, you have the HUD or closing statement from the purchase, and you’ll get another one for the sale. But improvements to the property such as a new roof,
Identify Sources of Income: This can seem silly since most taxpayers don’t want to prove additional income for the IRS to simply tax. However, certain income sources might be non-taxable. For example, if you lent money to your son to buy his first car and you’re depositing the payments, the IRS will consider this income unless you keep good records proving the money is actually loan payments to you and not income. Consider a no-frills 30 days as your New Year’s resolution, during which time you work to become more familiar with actual money on a daily basis. Resolve to go 30 days with no unnecessary expenditures. Mortgage, of course. Car payment, and food and utilities, of course. But for 30 days go without coffee on the way to work, meals out, impulse spending, movies and popcorn ... you get the idea. If it isn’t necessary, don’t spend. Start carrying cash if you’re in the habit of only carrying credit or debit cards. When you leave the house each day, count up the cash you’re carrying. If you need more, go to the ATM, but don’t give in and use a credit card for purchases. Empty your pockets of change at the end of every day. Put it in a container with a lid and don’t touch it. At the end of the month, count it up and put it toward a credit-card balance or savings.

Pick a few bills for which you normally write a check and instead pay cash for money orders or cashier’s checks. Any activity having to do with finances is self-rewarding. You get to see the benefits of careful spending rather quickly. As you keep to your resolution, you’ll see your expenses come down, your savings increase and maybe your health even get better if your financial goals keep you from spending money on snacks while you’re away from home. But the first step is to become more aware of money. It’s said that it takes 30 days to develop a habit. If you reduce your spending to necessities only for one month, it might become a habit you can keep.
