Some people have tried that avenue and have not found success and desire to attempt something different. Neither of these choices is right or wrong, they simply lead to different outcomes. Some individuals want a quick fix and want to be healed rather than do the work of healing. This is not wrong either. However, wanting to “be healed” will not work with Tai Yi.

ife Energy Flow Tai Yi is a hands-on energy healing practice. Tai Yi (means supreme balance in English) utilizes the many meridians of the body, many of which acupuncture utilizes, and creates an opening in the body that allows a person to more easily work on healing a mental, emotional, and physical difficulty. Tai Yi has over 4,000 treatments.
Tai Yi needs to engage the person receiving the treatment. During an appointment, the certified practitioner will have a discussion with the person desiring the treatment. The practitioner will select a treatment that is appropriate. The person receiving the treatment lies on a massage table, fully clothed, and the practitioner places light pressure along specific points on the body according to the treatment. This is called the grid. The grid is like a map that will direct the energy. The practitioner then sends energy to the same points on the grid for specific period of time. The person receiving the treatment must be willing to accept
Tai Yi is quite significant in that it utilizes all meridians of the body and each energy treatment is specific to an identified difficulty. Tai Yi works with the core of the problem rather than simply treat the symptom. Tai Yi is not appropriate for everyone, however. Everyone is different and is on different levels of self-awareness. Many
the energy AND utilize the energy for the next three to seven days. The practitioner will give directions on how to do this. If the person does not desire to utilize the energy, work with any emotions and/or memories that surface then the energy will dissipate and not fully work to its potential. That is why Tai Yi is not for everyone. If the person does not desire to work at creating change, Tai Yi will not work. Given that information, an advanced treatment is available, called Fire of the Brain. Fire of the Brain is for individuals who have had long-term anger and/or depression. It is also for those who have had drug abuse in the past (and have ended the drug abuse). Long-term anger, depression, and drug abuse leads to difficulties with the neurotransmitters in the brain. The brain misfires and toxins build up in the brain. As a result, one can develop lack of focus, confusion, and fogginess. Fire of the Brain helps release brain toxins and creates clarity. The person receiving the treatment will feel more clear, lighter, and easier to focus.

hen we think of Christmas baking, we usually think of cookies and cakes, and even the tradition of homemade candies. But in Europe, and especially in Italy, sweet luscious breads -doughs enriched with eggs and butter and loaded with dried fruits and cream -- have special prominence during the holidays. While it’s been a long-held custom the world over to mark Christmas with special food, in the 1300s and 1400s in Italy, Christmas treats were especially anticipated. At that time, wheat was a rare commodity, and during the rest of the year, bread was made with harder, poorer-quality grains. In Milan, controls were so strict that the bakers were not allowed to use wheat flour except on Christmas Eve. So it was an extraordinary event indeed when Christmas came and bakers were able to make tender loaves of simple bread from flour made from those soft kernels. Later, a sweet, buttery, yeasted “cake” began to appear in the same city. Legend says that Panettone is named after a creative, quick-thinking kitchen attendant to the 13th-century Duke of Milan named Toni. He combined leavened dough with butter, sugar and raisins to replace a dessert that had burned. Pan del Toni, the unmistakable yeasty, fruit-studded, heaven-scented bread, has become the Panettone we relish today. During the holiday season, tender, moist loaves of Panettone are shipped to us from across the sea. The traditional way of making of Panettone is a drawn-out affair and involves using a natural yeast and a two-day dough fermentation process. The extended fermentation gives the bread a long shelf life. This complex process is why preparing and eating Panettone is a seasonal event. Our recipe for Cranberry Panettone Muffins reflects the unique flavors and opulent tastes of traditional Panettone, but it is more accessible to the home cook.
CRANBERY PANETTONE MUFFINS 2 packages dry yeast (about 4 1/2 teaspoons) 1 1/4 cups warm water (100 F to 110 F) 5 3/4 cups all-purpose flour, divided

1. Dissolve yeast in warm water in a large bowl; let stand 5 minutes. Lightly spoon 1 1/4 cups flour into a dry measuring cup; level with a knife. Add to yeast mixture, stirring with a whisk to combine. Cover; let rise in a warm place (85 F), free from drafts, for 1 hour. 2. Combine sugar, butter, rind and salt in a large bowl; beat with a heavy-duty stand mixer at medium speed until light and fluffy (about 3 minutes). Add eggs, beating until combined; beat in yeast mixture. 3. Lightly spoon remaining 4 cups flour into dry measuring cup; level with a knife. Add flour to egg mixture, beating at medium speed until smooth. Turn dough out onto a floured surface. Knead until smooth and elastic (about 3 minutes); add enough of remaining 1/2 cup flour, 1 tablespoon at a time, to prevent dough from sticking to hands (dough will feel sticky). Knead in cranberries and ginger until well incorporated. 4. Place dough in a large bowl coated with cooking spray, turning to coat top. Cover and let rise in a warm place (85 F), free from drafts, 1 hour or until doubled in size. (Gently press two fingers into dough. If indentation remains, dough has risen enough.) 5. Coat 6 (1-cup) muffin cups with cooking spray. Cut 6 (5 by 12-inch) strips of parchment paper; place paper in muffin cups to extend 3 inches from the top of the cups. (Lining the muffin cups with strips of parchment makes it easy to remove the Panettones after baking.) 6. Divide dough evenly among muffin cups. Lightly spray each muffin with cooking spray; sprinkle evenly with nuts. Let rise in a warm place (85 F), free from drafts, 1 hour or until doubled in size. (You also can prepare this recipe in traditional muffin tins for a yield of 18; trim the parchment paper for the muffin cups to 2 1/2 x 6 inches, and shorten the baking time to 20 minutes.) 7. While muffins rise, preheat the oven to 375 F. 8. After muffins have doubled in size, bake at 375 F for 25 minutes or until muffins are lightly browned. Makes 24 (1/4 muffin) servings.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has discovered a way to classify the nutrient value and health benefits in fruits and vegetables, and it released a study that identifies “powerhouse” foods that can help reduce and prevent chronic disease. It’s the “nutrient density” that does the trick: how many of 17 necessary nutrients are present in each food. The CDC used an elaborate classification system to determine how to score each food item tested, based on kilocalories and grams, and involving terms like bioavailability, nutrient adequacy and energy density. Thankfully it is summed up for us in a handy chart (see www. cdc.gov/pcd/issues/2014/13_0390. htm). The results: The most nutrientdense foods are watercress, Chinese

If you’re around children and grandchildren, encourage them to get their shots as well ... so they don’t bring it home to you. ACHALASIA IS PAINFUL THROAT CONDITION DEAR DR. ROACH: My adult son recently has been diagnosed with achalasia, after many months of being misdiagnosed. He has suffered unbelievable pain and difficulty eating or drinking. At first he thought he was having a heart attack. Fortunately, that was ruled out. He is going to a prominent gastroenterologist, who made the diagnosis and has been treating him. He had the balloon procedure, which was not successful. He then had a Botox procedure. This relieved him somewhat. However, he has still had some painful episodes. What can you tell us about this illness? Will he eventually be cured? -- S.G. ANSWER: Achalasia (awk-uh-LAY-shuh) is a swallowing problem caused by degeneration in the nerve cells in the esophagus, the muscular tube that carries food to the stomach. Nobody knows why it happens, but it might be autoimmune or related to a viral infection. Because the nerve cells no longer work properly, the esophagus cannot empty, and food stays in the bottom of the esophagus, causing a “stuck” feeling, which indeed can resemble the symptoms of heart disease. Both solids and liquids are affected. Achalasia may be diagnosed with several different types of tests, including X-rays, barium swallow, endoscopy and esophageal manometry (measuring pressures inside the esophagus). It’s important to get the right diagnosis, since other conditions, especially cancer of the esophagus, may look like achalasia.
Surgery is the most definitive treatment, and it provides long-term relief for about 85 percent of people 10 years after treatment. There isn’t a cure, but most people get relief from one of these treatments.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 86 years old. I had pneumonia in May 2013 and was very sick for seven days in the hospital. Since I got home, I have had no sense of smell or taste. Can you tell me what caused it, and whether I will ever get it back? -- L.M. ANSWER: Since it happened in the hospital, it’s likely that something happened there to cause it. Sudden loss of smell and taste most likely are associated with infection, injury and medications. The organisms that cause pneumonia could possibly affect your sense of smell as well (disorders of both smell and taste usually are primarily related to loss of ability to smell). Injury can happen in the hospital, especially if you had to have a breathing tube placed through your nose. That leaves drugs as the other category, and MANY medications can cause loss of sense of smell. Since this has been going on for more than a year and a half, the only common reversible cause is medication. It would be worthwhile to ask your doctor to review all of your medicines, especially any that might have been started around the time of the pneumonia.

um’s the word when it comes to what exactly provokes the IRS to audit a tax return. Technically a DIF score is used, and like a poker player, the IRS plays pot odds and goes after the low hanging fruit.
Tina avoid income taxes. Hair dressers and massage therapists make up the bulk of cash businesses. Not reporting tips and cash payments could backfire if the IRS compares your figures to your co-workers or vendor’s payments. The IRS also considers the cost of living in your zip and wonders how you pay for food and gas.
Filing Schedule C. Individuals filing Schedule C are simply guilty by association of their self-employed namesake. Excessive deductions and underreporting income are common among the self-employed, but more attention is given to incomes above $100,000. But at that level, you should be an S Corporation (which has a 0.4% audit risk, by the way). Excess zeros. Having numerous zeros is a sure way to raise an eyebrow or two. Rounding numbers to the nearest zero dollar figure- e.g. $500, $1,500, $2,000 – is the type of guesswork that signals a red flag.

Expense Ratios. Travel, meals and entertainment expenses are commonly deducted when perhaps the business purpose is thin or nonexistent. The IRS knows this, and therefore starts with any taxpayer claiming these expenses outside of historical averages. Taxpayers working for cash based businesses or who are frequently paid on a cash basis, often pocket the cash to

With young millennials, only 6 percent believe they’ll never get out of debt. Increase the age to between 50 and 64, and that goes up to 22 percent. For seniors age 65 and older, it’s 31 percent. While the millennials are optimistic, perhaps they should note that those pessimistic seniors likely thought the same when they were younger ... that it was possible to get out of debt. Their likely target age to be debt free was 53. Seniors were hit especially hard during the recession and turned to their homes to raise needed cash. Mortgage debt rose 82 percent, which means that seniors who expected to live in a mortgage-free home are still making payments. Since the recession, total debt went down slightly (from 79.7 percent to 77.5 percent), but the reason was due to write-offs when the companies had to cancel debts that couldn’t be paid. That left consumers with lower credit scores, which led to higher interest rates on any subsequent loans they took out. Household debt went up,

while incomes went down. As has been said many times in this column, beware believing that financial bad times are over, even though in your household they might appear to be. Keep debt as low as possible. Pay off debts as quickly as you can, but don’t disregard your rate of savings. If you take a higher deductible for auto or home insurance to save money, be sure that deductible amount is tucked away in savings. If you can’t pay off an item in three months, don’t put it on a credit card. Swap interest credit cards for those with no interest for a period of time and pay off the other balances. Develop a second source of income. Shop the sales. In short, act as though the Great Recession is still upon us, because in some ways, it still is. ose weight. Quit smoking. Get fit. Eat healthy. Volunteer. The New Year is upon us and with its promise of new beginnings comes the plethora of resolutions. It is estimated that more than half of all Americans make New Year’s resolutions. Sadly, by June, nearly all of those good intentions will be abandoned. I don’t believe, however, that the lack of follow-through is a reason not to seek real change. In my career as a financial planner I have seen the changes that people can make in their lives when they commit to their own financial success. Here are a few financial resolves you may want to consider for this New Year:
Pay Yourself First Before you pay the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker or in our lives the banker, the grocer or cable provider pay yourself first. Make the commitment to set-aside apart of your earnings for long-term savings and investing. A good target is to save between 10 to 15% of your total income. If that doesn’t work find the amount that does and commit to it. A strategy that I have found helpful for many is to start small, saving an amount that is slightly uncomfortable, and increasing it every quarter. Over time it is amazing how much money can be accumulated if you decide to pay yourself first. Remember the words of Algamish, from

Make It Automatic
Take temptation out of the picture. It is nearly impossible to escape the pressure to spend and many who have committed to saving have found their good intentions as well as those savings waylaid by surrendering to temptation. One way to avoid undermining your saving’s resolution is to make your savings automatic. If you work for an employer who offers a retirement plan, like a 401(k), you can make contributions directly from your salary or wages. Most banks can establish an automatic investment from your checking account to a savings account. Many mutual fund companies offer systematic investment plans that can be started with as little as $50 per month. By making your savings automatic you make paying yourself first another bill that needs to be paid. It also eliminates the tendency to save what’s left over (if anything) after the bills are paid.
Zero Debt Commit to no new debt in 2015, and put together a plan to eliminate all your debts (excluding your mortgage) in the next 3 to 5 years. High interest debt is one of the biggest threats to your financial success and can cost you thousands of dollars in unnecessary fees and interest charges – dollars that you could otherwise be using for savings and investing. If you do use credit cards for the rewards, points or discounts, or to manage monthly cash flow commit to paying all credit cards in full every month. For larger items like a car or new furniture save first and pay cash. Too many make their purchase decisions based on the affordability of the monthly payment but if they look at the real cost, purchase price and interest, they may find their purchase not worth what they will end up paying.

I was driving recently with my daughter through an old, modest neighborhood filled with small houses. I pointed to one of the homes and told my daughter that there lived one of my wealthiest clients.
