EDITORIAL The USC-Aiken Shotgun Team’s 4th full academic year concluded abruptly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but not before a trip to Nationals in Ohio, a win in Alabama, an in-state collegiate tournament and the largest participation at ACUI in Savannah!

Another exciting addition to the 2019-2020 season was the new elective course for shotgun safety and clay target sports. The course was the result of the team’s growing success over the past three years which generated more interest on campus to learn about the sport. Many of the students in the class enjoyed it so much that they also joined the team.

We hope you enjoy reading our 2019-2020 Progress Report. Our continued success grows from a commitment to my vision for the USC-Aiken Shotgun Team, dedication from its members, and support from a network of University officials, the clay target shooting community, and last but not least, partnerships with local, state, and national sponsors. The University of South Carolina—Aiken, a public institution that was founded in 1961, offers undergraduate and graduate degrees to more than 3,700 students in 50 programs of study.

USC Aiken is known for its small class sizes, affordability and athletic programs.

HOME PRACTICE FACILITY Our home practice field is thirty minutes away from campus in Edgefield, SC at the National Wild Turkey Federation’s Palmetto Shooting Complex, a state of the art facility where many statewide and southeast regional tournaments are held.

Practices are held on Sunday afternoons for the convenience of our members so as not to conflict with student class schedules.

GAMES WE PLAY: TRAP TRAP dates back to the late 1700s. Targets simulate the flight path of flushing game birds such as quail and pheasant to hone a hunter's skills.

In the game of TRAP, targets are thrown from a single location within the trap house located in front of the shooter.

The shooter moves positions to change the angle and difficulty of the goingaway shot. There are a total of 25 targets in a round (5 at each position).

Most competitions shoot 4 rounds of trap singles for a total of 100 targets.

TRAP follows the Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) Rules.

SKEET

SKEET dates back to the early 1900s as a way to simulate the crisscrossing hunting action of flying upland birds such as dove. SKEET is a game of angles and mathematical formulas involving time, speed and distance as the shooter rotates through 8 different stations along a semi-circle as targets from the “High House” and “Low House” pass across the field. The 2-target presentations are thrown one at a time, and then at the same time for an additional challenge. There are a total of 25 targets in a round (2 to 4 per station). Most competitions shoot four rounds for a total of 100 targets. SKEET follows the National Skeet Shooting Association (NSSA) Rules.

SPORTING CLAYS

SPORTING CLAYS is often described as golf with a shotgun. Unlike the confined field of trap and skeet, sporting clays is set on a walking course in a natural environment. On longer courses, golf carts are used. The shooter travels from station to station where targets are presented differently at each station to mimic hunting 16 USC-Aiken Shotgun Team 2019-2020 Progress Report

situations for quail, pheasant, dove, ducks, geese, and rabbits.

Some targets are “true-pairs” and others are “report-pairs.”

There are usually 12-15 stations, each with 2 target throwers, presenting a combination of 100 different targets. The game follows the National Sporting Clay Association (NSCA) Rules.

SUPER SPORTING

With SUPER SPORTING, there are three or more target throwers at each station. Instead of repeated target pairs, the targets are various combinations per a menu card at the station. For instance, 3 singles from different throwers, and then a report or true pair of A/B, A/C, B/A, B/C, C/A, or C/B. Shooters may only view single targets (no show birds for pairs). On the singles, there is full use of the gun, meaning 18 USC-Aiken Shotgun Team 2019-2020 Progress Report

you can load two shells so if you miss the shot, you may shoot at it again before it lands. The target will be scored dead if broken by either shot. These rules make it a lot like five-stand, except on a traveling course like sporting clays.

Typically, a complete game is 50 scored targets instead of 100 (but be sure to carry extra shells for second attempts at singles).

5-STAND

5-STAND offers the variability of Sporting Clays but in one location with 5 shooting stations aside one another. Six or more throwers are scattered around the course and present an assortment of targets (overhead, incoming, crossing, quartering, teal, chandelle, rabbit, etc.). Shooters in turn attempt 5 clays per station before rotating to the next.

Each station has a menu card that lets the shooter know the sequence of targets. There are 3 levels of difficulty: Level I, 5 single targets;

Level II, 3 single and a simultaneous pair; Level III 1 single and 2 simultaneous pairs. Full use of the gun is permitted on singles.

As the shooter changes stations, not only does the target menu change, but the angle in which the shooter is in relation to the thrower changes, so a target thrown from A in Stand 1 may appear differently when shooting from Stand 5. Also, by the course manager moving the throwers regularly, the presentation opportunities can prove limitless.

SKEET DOUBLES SKEET DOUBLES are similar to a regular round of skeet, however you only shoot the pairs launched simultaneously from the high and low houses (no single targets) and after working Stations 1 – 7, the shooter then goes backwards from 6 through 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1. There is nothing shot on Station 8.

When shooting doubles at Stations 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7, aim the first shot at the target from the nearest house and the second shot at the target from the farthest house (just like in a regular game of skeet). But in Doubles, the middle station (4) has a bit of a twist.

The shooter must shoot High then Low going around stations 1 through 7, but when coming back around from Stations 7 to 1, you must shoot Low then High.

TRAP DOUBLES

In TRAP DOUBLES, two targets are released simultaneously, and one shot is taken at each. Shooters stand at the closest distance behind the trap house, 16 yards, the same as for regular trap singles.

Since the birds are usually about 15 to 25 yards out by the time the shooter fires, even the 16-yard singles are 31 to 41 yards away. But with a second target to hit when both are launched together, the 2nd target is even farther out making it more difficult to hit. A round of doubles is usually 25 pairs, or 50 birds.

Competitions usually shoot 2 rounds (100 total targets).

BUNKER TRAP Bunker Trap, also known as International Trap, is similar to American Trap in that there are five shooting stations. However, while an American trap house holds one oscillating trap machine, a bunker trap house contains 15 fixed traps. Targets are thrown from any of the three traps directly in front of

the shooter. Bunker Trap targets fly at wider angles and may be thrown higher or lower. The main difference however is target speed. ATA targets fly only at 45 mph while Bunker Trap targets move at 68 mph. Like with Super Sporting, in Bunker Trap, a shooter is allowed a second shot at the same target.

There are not as many Bunker Trap ranges in the US as American Trap fields, but we did have the opportunity to shoot Bunker in Alabama at the Bama Blast Invitational and again in Ohio for Nationals at the Cardinal Shooting Complex.

The ACUI collegiate events provide opportunities for us to compete with collegiate peers. A record number of 309 participants from 32 college teams and 42 juniors and seniors from 8 high school teams competed in the 350target tournament. Collegiate teams from Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, Mississippi, Missouri, Kansas, Texas, and South Carolina participated in skeet, trap, sporting, and super sporting at the event.

RECRUITMENT—SIGNING DAY February 20, 2020 The University of South Carolina Aiken's growing shotgun team boasts one more member for the 2020-2021 roster, Brooke D. Paquin from Edgemoor, SC. Paquin has won numerous state championship titles and high-overall wins through the junior and senior varsity divisions in the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP), South Carolina Youth Shooting Foundation (SCYSF) and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) clay target events related to trap, skeet and sporting clays.

"Participating in shooting sports has probably been the most fulfilling thing that I have ever done," says Paquin. "Most of my close friends come from the youth shooting world. I have built relationships that will hopefully last a lifetime. I have learned so much about myself through competition. There is no such thing as failure, just temporary setbacks. Anything can be accomplished through hard work and perseverance."

This student-athlete started shooting competitively in the 8th grade and has been a member of the Lewisville High School Sporting Clay team located within the Chester County School District. She also competes with the Featherhorn Young Guns, a private gun club which takes part in SCTP events. Paquin also volunteers with sporting clay tournament setup and registration at Moree's Sportsman Preserve.

Paquin will use the scholarships she has earned through shooting to continue her academic and shooting careers as a USC Aiken Pacer.

Jimmy Tollison, National Sporting Clays Association (NSCA) Class AA registered competitive athlete and elected delegate of the South Carolina Sporting Clays Association, announced March 2019 that he is back coaching and teaching!

This was good news for the USC-Aiken Shotgun Team, as Tollison volunteered his time and skills to work with members of the team during Fall and Spring sporting clay practices.

There is a story behind his new logo...The definition of MODIFIED is “to make partial or minor changes to something, typically so as to improve it.”

This describes Tollison’s teaching method. “I am a firm believer everyone has a built in shooting ability, we have to discover it, then modify it. Mental toughness—everyone has the ability but it has to be modified and developed.”

Tollison explains another reason for the name of his logo, “Lastly, we were all born with a sinful nature. Jesus died on the cross to forgive our sins, when we accept him and profess our sins, they are forgiven and we are saved from eternal separation. When this is done, Jesus has Modified us.”

Oh, one last thing—shooters can tell you that a modified choke is a clay crusher!

SAFETY Shooting programs, like those administered through 4H, Scholastic Clay Target Program, the SC Youth Shooting Foundation, and SCDNR Education Outreach programs, teach gun safety.

The clay target shooting sports are the safest of all competitive sports.

SAFETY The USC-Aiken Shotgun Team follows the 4H Safety Training which teaches the acronym M.A.T. — (MUZZLE-ACTION-TRIGGER)

Muzzle of the Shotgun is controlled and pointed in a safe direction at all times. Muzzle cannot be rested on any part of the body.

Actions Open – Semi-Automatic and Pump shotguns must have the action visibly open (facing forward) at all times with the barrel pointed up when walking or riding. Over/Under shotguns must be carried over the shoulder with the barrel in front controlled by the hand on the barrel and pointed downward. Ammunition is to be loaded into the shotgun only when the shooter is on the pad/in the box, muzzle pointed downrange and ready to shoot.

Trigger - keep finger off the trigger until in the box, muzzle pointed in a safe direction, and ready to shoot.

Shooters are also taught how to use their equipment safely with the correct ammunition. Shooters are taught what to expect and how to handle potential gun malfunctions (misfires, hang fires, squib loads, etc.).

Shooters are taught other safety rules specific to the various clay games.

Ear and Eye Protection is required by everyone on the course – shooters coaches – parents – spectators – club personnel. No Exceptions!

BENEFITS of a SHOOTING PROGRAM Clay Target programs educate people on the safe handling of firearms, teaches new skills, introduces youth to new recreational activities, compliments established interests in hunting, and promotes the competitive aspects of the sport for advanced participants.

The discipline and selfcontrol required for responsible firearms use, as well as respect for guns and range safety, carries over into many other aspects of life: patience, dedication, leadership, concentration, selfdiscipline, and problem solving.

Students, regardless of sex, size, speed, physical disability, or traditionally conceived ideas of athletic characteristics, find it easy to participate, learn, and challenge themselves.

The mutually beneficial relationship between academics and shooting sports is well recognized. For the school, a good shooting sports program boosts the school’s image and is a selling point to attract new students. A recognized team offers a sense of community pride.

NEW SHOOTING COURSE AT USC-AIKEN Following three successful years of the USC-Aiken Shotgun Team and the interest that it has created on campus, a new elective course to teach shotgun safety and clay target basics was offered for the first time ever on campus Fall 2019.

The course filled to capacity in the first week of open registration and an Advanced Shotgun Sports class was added Spring 2020.

Adjunct Instructor Alex Richardson pioneered USC-Aiken’s first-ever course-of-this-kind after promoting his proposal to the Dean of the Exercise Sports Department for the benefits of offering such course. https://sites.google.com/view/uscaclaytargetcourse/home

GOOD STEWARDS The USC-Aiken Shotgun Team values, teaches, and reinforces respect...this includes respect for self, others, and the environment.

Cleaning up and leaving the facility in a better condition after we have finished shooting, and not leaving cleanup for someone else to do, is a part of our routine.

Typical cleanup after a practice is over 1,000 used hull casings, and after a tournament there are 100,000’s+ so hulls are picked up by each squad shooting their last station or round.

Directs, manages, advises and coordinates all aspects of leading this collegiate competitive clay target sports team.

Richardson started the team as a Freshman, and now as a Pacer Alum, he continues to give back to USC-Aiken by volunteering his time and shooting skills to manage and coach the team.

Richardson also serves as the Adjunct Instructor for the EXSC-190 Clay Target Sports, Advanced Shotgun, & Gun Safety Elective Courses.

Richardson is a trained Level I Certified Shotgun Instructor and recognized throughout the clay target sports community as a distinguished competitive athlete in Skeet, Trap, & Sporting.

OPERATING EXPENSES 2019-2020 Figures represent operating expense totals from all funding sources (student government allocation, funds raised by club through sponsorships, grants, fundraising, financial/product donations, as well as fees and expenses covered out of pocket by members participating in the program.

Figures do not include equipment and supplies such as guns and ammo bags personally owned and used by individual members.

Also, remember that our season was cut short due to COVID-19. A normal full season would be higher.

As the report shows, this is an expensive sport, hence the need for sponsors/ donors to offset the operating expenses and make it affordable for members to participate.
