Celebrating 40 years of women… look how far we’ve come Forty years ago, women were scarce on this campus. The 1970 yearbook contains pages and pages of black and white photos of male students, all dressed in suits and ties, their hair cut short and carefully parted on the side.

Just one photo stands out from the pages, that of a smiling Sally Cumiskey ’70 — a single Mary Tyler Moore in a sea of Dick Van Dykes.

What a difference a half a decade would make. Hairstyles Deb Nahrgang and beards got Saint Mary’s longer, miniskirts Magazine editor got shorter, music got louder and the number of women grew significantly at Saint Mary’s.

Skip ahead 40 years. Women now slightly outnumber the men on the Winona campus. Women’s sports now hold their own on the college scene.

And women now hold vice president positions at the university.

With Saint Mary’s centennial growing ever nearer, our office has been doing a lot of remembering and reminiscing. Old photographs and old yearbooks are being passed around frequently. There is so much valuable history; the names and faces of those who have molded and shaped this university are numerous; and there are so many stories worth retelling!

This issue looks at just how far Saint Mary’s has come, and takes time to remember the paths we’ve taken to get here and where we plan to go.

This past fall we discovered one of the oaks on campus may be the oldest and largest bur oak in Winona County, if not all of southeastern Minnesota. See page 6. The tales that tree could tell as it watched the city of Winona grow from wilderness to farmland to industrial town, and as it watched Saint Mary’s

grow from a small school for young men to a diverse university with more than 5,300 students at its campuses and other locations.

Throughout the year, we said goodbye to many people who helped to shape Saint Mary’s with their time, talents and financial support. A special ceremony was held on campus in January in honor of Jerrie Seibert, who served in Winona law enforcement for 33 years and with Campus Safety for 11 years. Read about those we remember in the Class Notes section.

After an astonishing 34 years with the Art & Design Department, Sister Margaret Mear, a familiar face and personality on campus, will retire. Read her story on page 26.

Pages 20-25 celebrate the 40th anniversary of women at Saint Mary’s.

Walk back in time with the faculty, staff and students who remember “back when.” Also, mark your calendars for the First Women of Saint Mary’s event Oct. 7-10.

No matter how many years pass and how many faces change, Saint Mary’s mission, and the dreams of Saint John Baptist de La Salle remain a constant inspiration.

Our magazine details two ways in which De La Salle’s vision is being carried through in its most direct form.

The First-Generation Initiative, detailed on pages 9-11, will provide access and support to first-generation students at Saint Mary’s, and Christ the Teacher Institute for Education (pages 14-15) continues to further De La Salle’s work in education in Nairobi.

Another constant is the 60-year collaboration with Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary. It was a dream of Bishop Leo Binz that sparked the initiation of a seminary in conjunction with Saint Mary’s. In 1948, this dream became a reality as IHM Seminary was built adjacent to Saint Mary’s. The first seminarians came in the academic year of 1948-49, 60 years ago. There are

now more than 1,000 alumni of IHMS. They’ve gone on to become not only our pastors, but also our leaders and friends. Read more on pages 16-19.

Saint Mary’s is truly making a difference. Many of our students and alumni helped to make positive changes through the Lasallian Day of Service and Make a Difference Day in October. See page 37. We invite you all to join us in making a difference in your communities next fall!

Another way you can make a difference is through our new program, Cardinals Helping Cardinals, which is branching out to support Saint Mary’s students and alumni in a multitude of ways including: jobs and internships, development, admissions, and mentoring. Alum looks back on being Lasallian Below is a message that was posted by Keith Donovan ’06 on his personal Facebook page following the inaugural SMU Young Alumni Weekend.

To be a Lasallian… I beat the alarm by an hour this morning – something that doesn’t happen in the world of Keith Donovan. I imagine part of it has to do with the fact that I have more itchiness over my body from mosquito bites in the last few days than the rest of my summer put together. Particularly the two that got my face are really beginning to annoy me… aside from that I woke up thinking back over my time in college. I sit now, propped up in a bed at the Quality Inn, quietly tapping away at the keys while my impromptu roommates all get in the last hour of their snoozing.

So why do I continue to return to my collegiate alma mater? I will say that, though the generation of students that I knew has all but completely come and gone now, many of the faculty and staff remains the same. And, although it is those folks to whom I am indebted for a healthy part of my growth during those four years of my life, I think that it is campus itself that exudes my reason for return. Saint Mary’s, like no other place I have been, embodies the tenants of a Lasallian community. The faith life of the campus is a beautiful, strong edifice by which you can look around and see the face of Christ in most anyone you meet. The attitude of service never ceases to amaze me. Only at SMU can you put together a young alumni weekend and have people return to their alma mater to complete an on-campus cleanup as a service project. But beyond these things, it is the sense of communi-

ty that abounds throughout the campus.

There is a pride with which people walk, proud to be member, past or present, of the Saint Mary’s community. Many freshmen were wearing T-shirts that boasted: “I’m not just a student, I’m a future alum.” People here are proud of being in a community where they can strive to learn more. They are supported by their peers to party and have fun and be young, while, at the same time, learn.

This pride extends from the New Student Liturgy well past the Commencement Ceremony.

SMU has left an indelible mark on who I am, one which I never try to wash away. Entering into the 12th consecutive year of my time in a Lasallian institution, I think that other followers of De La Salle have a model ministry to look toward when describing what it means to be Lasallian in the 21st century – and I must say, I remain proud to have graduated from a place that continues to instill faith, service and community into all they do. The Lasallian Spirit is alive and well here this “Young Alumni Weekend,” and, unlike the uncontrollable itch from those annoying mosquitoes, it is something I am happy to leave Winona with this afternoon. I will carry back home to my own Lasallian ministry a renewed Spirit, so thankful that over a decade ago, God pointed me in the direction of my first Lasallian ministry.

Since that day, in May of 1998, I have always known I was entering a place where the Spirit is alive and living in the hearts of the people present, and to continue to see that here at SMU makes my heart radiate with joy.

LETTERS baseball team. During the summers, the Theilman baseball team frequently rode the local train, which ran along the Zumbro River from Kellogg to Zumbrota, to play other local town baseball teams.

I attended Saint Mary’s from Fall 1959 to Spring 1961, and then transferred to Marquette College of Engineering and then to Northwestern University in Evanston Illinois for my master’s degree. I live at the exact same location that my parents and grandparents lived in Theilman.

‘Frosh Bound’ photos had historical ties for Lynch family Ball players look familiar in ‘Looking Back’ I know two of your 10 1916 baseball players shown in your “Looking Back” feature of the Fall 2009 edition of Saint Mary’s Magazine.

In the front row, second from the left is my dad, Albert Edward Hampe ’20, 1901-1977.

In the second row, third from the left and directly behind Dad is Uncle Bill; William George Hampe ’19, 1900-1987. I have the actual 1919 “Commencement Exercises” bulletin.

Both Dad and Uncle Bill graduated from grade school at Wabasha County District 64 in rural Theilman, Minn.

They transferred to Saint Mary’s for their high school education. Dad then went to Marquette University in Milwaukee, graduating with distinction with a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the College of Business Administration in 1924. Uncle Bill returned to Theilman to help his father run the Hampe Bros. General Store.

A third brother, Walter Nicholas Hampe, graduated from Marquette in 1925 with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Liberal Arts. I don’t have information about his years at Saint Mary’s.

From a historical note, it’s very interesting that two boys from a small southeastern Minnesota town with a population of less than 100 people were on the Saint Mary’s baseball teams. Dad went on to play third base for his fraternity at Marquette. Dad and Uncle Bill were longtime players on the Theilman

Brother Leo of Mary was unforgettable An unforgettable teacher at Saint Mary’s was Brother Leo of Mary, someone wellknown to older alumni, especially for his course on the Life of Christ.

In my freshman year at Saint Mary’s in 1952, I heard the rumor that Brother Leo knew so many biblical facts and details that sometimes his semester course didn’t get beyond Jesus’ early years. However, when I had his course as a sophomore, we covered Christ’s lifespan up to the end of his three public years.

because my dad (Maggie’s grandfather) is pictured in the old photo. After confirming the results, I set out to consult with my dad (residing in Bradenton, Fla.) as to its origins. That photo was taken at Chicago’s Union Station in September 1937. It is identified as circa 1941 because that was that freshman class’ graduating year. My dad, John Lynch ’69, attended Saint Mary’s for one year.

He is on the top row, sixth from the left.

He told me there were roughly 16-17 boys from his high school, St. Mel’s, that were attending Saint Mary’s that fall.

The rest of those boys in the photo came from all over the Midwest: Detroit, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, etc. Another note

classes in Winona public schools. He also was SMC Chapel sacristan and busy, especially for Christmas and Holy Week liturgy.

Generally Brother Leo conveyed a friendly but businesslike demeanor. But once, when correcting an errant student he adapted a tone of voice from his early life in Kansas City, a sort of southern-like drawl, that made the rest of the class really laugh.

Although I stayed in the teaching profession for only 12 years, the example of Brother Leo of Mary’s classroom work was for me a lifelong inspiration.

News and Views Throop named dean for Humanities and Sciences Saint Mary’s University welcomed Elizabeth A. Throop, Ph.D., as its new dean for the School of Humanities and Sciences on Sept. 1.

A native of the Chicago area, Dr. Throop earned a B.A. in Anthropology from Macalester College; an M.S.W. in Counseling from University of Illinois Chicago; an M.A. in Anthropology from UC - San Diego; and a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from UC - San Diego.

She comes to Saint Mary’s from Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond, Ky., where she was division chair and associate professor of anthropology. She previously taught anthropology, sociology and social work at McKendree College and several other institutions.

Her scholarly interests have blended psychology and anthropology in the study of marriage, family, childrearing practices, and kinship and

gender relations. Dr. Throop’s scholarship has involved international study in Ireland, India and the United States. She is the author of two books and a number of chapters, articles and reviews. She has professional experience in social work, legal support service and family therapy.

Dr. Throop supervises 15 of SMU’s undergraduate College departments and programs in Winona.≠

Grant to fund series for women in mathematics The National Science Foundation has awarded Saint Mary’s University a $10,890 grant for a Women in Mathematics Colloquium Series, to be held over the next two years.

The support from this grant provides the funds for the Saint Mary’s Mathematics and Statistics Department to continue an annual colloquium highlighting successful women mathematicians and to support undergraduate travel to national conferences.

Organizers hope that through these events, high school and college-aged students will become engaged and inspired by the opportunities and

challenges presented to women in the ever-progressing field of mathematics.

“This series encourages the recent upward trend of women in mathematics at Saint Mary’s and introduces undergraduate and high school women to role models who are not only successful in their mathematical profession, but also in their lives,” said Dr. Kevin Dennis, chair of the Mathematics and Statistics Department.

“This project intends to keep inspiring women to pursue terminal degrees in mathematics and also to enhance the SMU mathematics community.”≠

Saint Mary’s expands alumni scholarship Beginning with the incoming class of 2010, each incoming student at Saint Mary’s University will receive a $1,000 SMU Alumni Scholarship for each parent who is a graduate of SMU. In the past, this scholarship was limited to one per family. Saint Mary’s has expanded this program because it recognizes the importance of “legacy families” and wants to encourage many generations of families to continue to choose Saint Mary’s.≠

SMU collaborating to bring special education to Palestine On Aug. 5, Rebecca (Prell) Hopkins ’94, M’00, C’05, dean of the Graduate School of Education, and Dr. Jane Anderson, dean of the School of Education, traveled to Ramallah, Palestine to participate in seminar work sessions and the first-ever national conference on special education.

The project director, Dr. Sami Basha, Department of Education faculty member at Bethlehem University, invited Saint Mary’s to collaborate on this ground-breaking initiative of developing the first teacher preparation program in special education in Palestine.

Prior to this visit, curriculum and program structure of SMU’s newly launched M.A. in Special Education was shared with Dr. Basha and his team.

The basic structure of this master’s degree has now been developed, and continued work on curriculum writing and assessment planning will be next.

University, was also present at the conference in Ramallah to support this initiative and the collaboration between the two universities.

The project was given a two-year extension through Amideast, a U.S. non-profit organization that works to strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation between Americans and the people of the Middle East and North Africa. Saint Mary’s honors faculty, staff, students, Lasallian educators at Founder’s Day At its Founder’s Day ceremony Tuesday, March 2, Saint Mary’s University presented an honorary doctorate to Dr. Carmelita Quebengco, executive vice president and chief operating officer of De La Salle Philippines, and chancellor emeritus of De La Salle University in Manila, Philippines. Dr. Quebengco was presented an honorary doctorate in educational leadership for her work in the achievement of excellence in Lasallian higher education. She addressed the audience about developing effectiveness in a Lasallian university.

Roots of Saint Mary’s tree run deep This past fall, Ed Hayes, a forest pathologist and regional arborist from Rochester, Minn., examined what has come to be known as the “Brother Charles Severin” tree, located in front of La Salle Hall on Saint Mary’s Winona campus. After close examination, Hayes estimated the age of the tree, 58 inches in diameter, as 300 years old and determined it to be in excellent health. “The tree would have been roughly 100 years old at the time the first known non-native American set foot in the Winona area just before the 1850s,” Hayes said. The bur oak gets its nickname, apparently, because the late Brother Charles, a beloved biology professor, saved it from becoming further buried in dirt during excavating on campus. Brother Charles’ knowledge and love of trees is evident by the well that still exists around this historical tree. Hayes said the tree is one of the biggest and oldest bur oaks in Winona County, if not all of southeastern Minnesota.≠

Also honored were a dedicated staff member, a Lasallian educator within Saint Mary’s, and two outstanding seniors.

Founder’s Day is the annual celebration of the founding of Saint Mary’s in 1912 by Winona Bishop Patrick R. Heffron.

Mary Becker received the university’s Bishop Patrick Heffron Award for Service.

Becker has Mary Becker served in the Office of the President since 1993. As the administrative assistant to the president, she provides a daily example of service and commitment to the mission of Saint Mary’s University.

Brother William presents Brother Stephen Rusyn with the Distinguished Lasallian Educator Award.

Brother Stephen Rusyn, FSC, Ph.D., was chosen as this year’s Distinguished Lasallian Educator.

Brother Stephen is a long-time professor of English at SMU’s Winona campus who was chosen because of his attention and dedication to students. Distinguished Lasallian Educator Awards are given by many Lasallian institutions in the North American-Toronto Region of the De La Salle Christian Brothers; they honor contributions and commitment to the Lasallian mission of education.

Additionally, the Outstanding Male and Female Senior Awards were presented to students who have demonstrated the ideals of scholarship, character, leadership and service. Above all, these men and women have shown genuine concern for meeting the needs of others.

David Dahlstrom and Mariana Sanchez received the Outstanding Male and Female Senior Awards.

The Outstanding Male Senior Award went to David Dahlstrom, son of William and Rosanne Dahlstrom of Rochester, Minn. The Outstanding Female Senior Award went to Mariana Sanchez, daughter of Jaime and Bernadette Sanchez, of Puebla, Mexico.

Dahlstrom is an accounting and human resource management major and university baseball player. During his college career, he has been involved with the Lasallian Honors Program, KSMR radio, Delta Mu Delta (the international honor society in business) and Delta Epsilon Sigma (the national

scholastic honor society). He also has competed in intramural athletics and volunteered at the ITA Literacy Clinic.

Sanchez is majoring in graphic design. She was a member of the golf and soccer teams, and also played water polo and lacrosse club sports. She’s shared her passion for sports by serving as Big Red, SMU’s Cardinal mascot and has helped to recruit other athletes.

Sanchez also has worked with phonathon and completed internships with the Kabara Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies and with Saint Mary’s Press. For a creative outlet, she has exhibited work in the Lillian Davis Hogan Galleries, designed T-shirts and event posters, and painted a mural in the Cardinal Club.

Education programs are approved, praised The undergraduate and graduate teacher licensure programs and the Education Specialist in Educational Administration program have been approved and lauded this winter by two state governing boards.

Accreditation was approved for maximum time periods without alterations.

Accrediting agencies, when making periodic reviews of all collegiate education departments, typically cite a college or university for items that must be amended before certification is granted or extended.

“That Saint Mary’s was identified as having model programs and did not receive any requests for alterations is a testament to the strength of our programs,” said Jim Bedtke, SMU vice president for the College and the Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs.

“Saint Mary’s is nationally recognized for providing quality education programs at all levels.”

Minnesota’s Board of Teaching has extended accreditation for Saint Mary’s undergraduate and graduate teacher licensure programs for the maximum seven years.

The MBOT review team noted effective collaboration between faculty in the content areas and the education program, an advising process that is supportive and accessible, the strength of the clinical experiences, and the importance attached to the preparation of teachers.

The review team wrote, “The Lasallian mission of Saint Mary’s is transparent and threaded through the education programs here. The students recognized the faculty’s commitment to social justice in education and indicated how they model that in their constructivist approach to teaching.”

The Minnesota Board of School Administrators approved the Education Specialist in Educational Administration program of the Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs for the maximum five years. The Ed.S. prepares candidates for three possible licensures: K-12 Building Principal, Superintendent and Director of Special Education.

The MBSA review team expressed appreciation for the university’s consistent mission-driven approach at all levels, from the administration to the students.

The team was impressed by faculty and the preparation students receive for school leadership.≠

First-Generation Initiative Transforming lives, communities

As Brother Edmund Siderewicz, FSC, introduces the new First-Generation Initiative at Saint Mary’s — a program designed to offer academic and personal support to first-generation students as they transition into higher education — he frequently recalls one particular “success” story.

Brother Ed paints a vivid picture of a young student who was attending San Miguel School in Chicago — a school he co-founded in 1995. This young man, then in the sixth grade, was an immigrant from Mexico who came from a family of 10, living in a two-bedroom apartment.

“His story,” Brother Ed says, “is indicative of the lives of a lot of these kids. They’re underserved and underrepresented.”

Brother Ed explains that at San Miguel, students are told that within the next three years, they’ll be in the best high schools in the city — that their educational goals are attainable. This announcement is sometimes met with some street-savvy skepticism.

“They didn’t believe it,” Brother Ed says. “And this young man — who spoke little English — told me, ‘Brother, we don’t belong there.’ These kids initially don’t think this is possible for them.”

Skip ahead several years in this story. The skeptical sixth-grader has since gone on to study pre-med at Loyola University in Chicago and is pursuing a career in medicine as a clinical researcher at the University of Chicago.

“It’s been interesting to watch the evolution in his life,” Brother Ed said with a smile, remembering how, many years ago, he would bring this same student to various speaking engagements about San Miguel. Back then, Brother Ed remembers him as a nervous young man who fumbled with note cards.

Brother Ed said their paths crossed again recently at a speaking engagement.

Now, the man is sharply dressed and polished, without a note card in sight.

“He totally upstaged me,” Brother Ed said with a laugh. As what he calls a “crown jewel” of this educational

process, Brother Ed said this former student feels compelled to give back.

“It’s his goal to come back and serve his people,” he said.

It’s the same mission of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, the founder of the Christian Brothers and the patron saint of educators, 330 years ago in France.

De La Salle felt education — the kind that could transform lives and subsequently communities — needed to be accessible for all, especially the poor.

Making it accessible has become Brother Ed’s mission. Last fall he was hired at Saint Mary’s as assistant to the president for First-Generation and Lasallian Initiatives.

Beyond accessibility, this initiative will also build the support structures necessary throughout the collegiate experience, so that students may reach their full potential and complete their bachelor’s degrees.

Fall 2010. The first year, 15 students will qualify; by 2011, another 15 students will be admitted, bringing the total to 30 students. By 2012, 45 First-Generation students will be studying at Saint Mary’s, and by 2013, the level will be maintained at 60 qualifying students.

It’s a goal that comes with an ambitious pricetag of $42 million. “We want to provide full scholarships and opportunities for these students, study abroad, internships, life to the full, and that means $35,000 per student per year, which means a half a million by this fall,” Brother Ed said. “It’s a challenge. But it’s the Lord’s work. This is not something we have to sell. We simply need to allow people into this dream and this vision for preparing firstgeneration leaders for our future.”

The vision for this initiative, he said, came from Brother William, president.

“Just over a year ago Brother William planted a seed in my mind,” he said. “It was one of his dreams for the university, and he talked about it in his inaugural address. He called me and asked me to consider coming to Saint Mary’s. I was transitioning out of San Miguel of Chicago, and this was something we had always dreamed about

– providing access for our students. So, it made perfect sense. It connected with something in me, and it was something that needed to be done.

“Brother William saw the potential, and he knew the spirit of this community. This is just a beginning, a spark to reflect upon and dream about what else is possible for a Lasallian university as far as responding to the needs of the poor today. It’s a beautiful vision of what this could be.”

And it’s something both Brother William and Brother Ed see the entire campus rallying around, especially in terms of supporting these students.

“At Saint Mary’s, education is always personalized, it’s a strong suit of this university, and that’s why this works so well,” Brother Ed said. “We recognize that there is a whole lot more work to be done in preparing ourselves for these students. Faculty Advance Day was

focused around cultural sensitivity. It began a process of reflection. But what I’ve found in talking with people is that they’re enthusiastic, supportive, excited and endorsing, but that they realize we have some serious homework ahead of us.”

In many ways the project has been the culmination of many dreams. It was Saint John Baptist de La Salle who had the dream in 17th century France of providing human and Christian education for the artisans and the poor. It is a dream deep within the heart of the Saint Mary’s community to connect De La Salle’s original dream with the needs of the poor today. It was Dr. Jane Anderson from the Education Department who first envisioned a summer college-preparation program for first-generation students several years ago.

Throughout their four years of high school, candidates for the FirstGeneration Initiative will come to SMU for two weeks each summer. They will experience college life and time away SPRING 2010

from home, and parents will be involved in the process. “Research has proven that these types of activities will help them succeed,” Brother Ed said.

Adding another way to help these students succeed, Vice President for Student Development Chris Kendall ’79, M’95, and Lupita Garza Cienfuegos M’05 from the Office of Admission have established the College Colleagues, a mentoring program that pairs students with upperclassmen, staff and faculty – arming them with a support team to help them through various aspects of college life.

“A mantra we have been using is that access without support does not equal opportunity,” Brother Ed said.

“This has been another case of weaving together dreams.”

To be eligible, First-Generation Initiative students must demonstrate a financial need, have a GPA of 3.0 or better, come from families living at or below the poverty level, and be in the top 33 percent of their graduating class.

“When De La Salle set out to do this way back when, he never thought of this as charity,” Brother Ed said. “He saw these children as having potential. If we unleash the potential inside of them that would otherwise lie dormant, it also enriches the lives of all of us at that table. Many times society overlooks these types of young people. I think we should feel honored to have these students here.

“De La Salle said we should see Jesus Christ ‘under the rags’ of these youth. It’s been said that this is what the Founder would do today if he was at Saint Mary’s.”≠

A Saintly Journey Martyr, SMU alum is a candidate for Roman Catholic sainthood emphatically telling them of his return.

“Keep the Institute going, all of you,” he wrote. “Students, teachers and workers have the responsibility to care for the school. I will be back in one month.

Remember that building the new structure was hard; now that we have it, maintain it, keep it pretty. I will see you later.”

Shortly after he left, the Somoza government fell to the Sandinistas, and the religious superiors of the Lasallian order decided Brother James would not return to Nicaragua.

This article, written by Darrell Ehrlick and printed in the Winona Daily News on Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, is reprinted, with slight style modifications, with permission.

Brother James Miller ’66 gave his life for God, and now the Roman Catholic Church has begun the process to make the Saint Mary’s University graduate a saint.

Earlier this year, he was designated a “servant of God” and a martyr for the faith — beginning a journey that could end in canonization, the Roman Catholic process of sainthood. He is the only SMU graduate to be considered for the designation.

Brother James was born prematurely — weighing barely 4 pounds — in 1944 in Stevens Point, Wis. But he grew up to tower over people, standing at 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing more than 200 pounds. He was a farm kid with a knack for language and boisterous guffaw that could startle some.

Brother James’ religious studies at SMU in the mid-1960s culminated in his career teaching indigenous Latin American Indians. Many of his contemporaries in the Lasallian order describe a man perfectly suited for life in Central America — an agrarian background and fluency in Spanish and English. But most importantly, Brother James felt especially strongly about educating the Indians in the classroom and in the field, where he taught agriculture.

It was there, outside a Guatemalan school where Brother James was repairing a wall in 1982, that three assassins took his life.

Passion for education Brother James found his passion in 1974 when he was assigned to Nicaragua.

His work there included expanding a school for indigenous tribes, doubling the faculty and the student body to 800 people.

Though not necessarily sympathetic to the political aims of the Somoza family that controlled Nicaragua, Brother James maintained a close alliance with the regime because he saw it as a way to expand the school, said Brother Francis

Trip back home, then a new assignment

Carr ’66, a classmate, fellow Christian Brother and SMU trustee. But, as unrest wracked the country, many local residents took Brother James’ cordial relationship with the Somoza government as tacit support.

As the Sandinista revolution spread throughout Nicaragua and the rural countryside, Brother James started receiving threats. In fact, the Sandinista rebels put Brother James on a list of people to be “dealt with” when they came into power.

Brother James fell further out of favor as he and other teachers tried to keep students out of military service.

The rebel war drew closer to his school in Puerto Cabezas, and machine gun fire could often be heard outside.

Realizing the threats, Brother James advanced a planned vacation to Wisconsin in which he’d help celebrate the centennial of his home parish.

“Under the pretext of being the companion of an aged nun, he was able to fly to Managua on a Red Cross plane and obtain a flight to the United States,” wrote Brother Theodore Drahmann ’49 in his book, “Hermano Santiago: The Life and Times of Brother James Miller.”

Brother James was worried his departure would be seen as fleeing out of fear and wrote to several people

Brother James spent a frustrating year and a half in America, first in Wisconsin and later in the Twin Cities.

“I’m bored up here,” he wrote. “I hate snow, even the little we’ve gotten this year. I guess it’s no secret that I am anxious to return to Latin America. I just don’t function to my best potential up here anymore,” Brother James wrote to Brother Martin Spellman ’54.

In January 1981, Brother James learned he would be assigned to Huehuetenango, Guatemala.

The assignment in Huehuetenango wasn’t so unlike the assignment in Nicaragua. He taught and worked on a farm that helped support an Indian school.

And he helped Mayan Indians study their own culture and trained them to be teachers so they could go back to the villages and educate. But there was another reason for the education: to keep the Indians from being conscripted into the army.

“The Brothers (at the school) were all about the kids, and if the government got in the way of the kids, they’d stick their noses in it,” Brother Francis said. “And the government saw that, and it didn’t like it.”

This caught the attention of the already embattled government, which was trying to stave off insurgents. The Christian Brothers and the school were seen with suspicion. Rumors began to circulate that the school was sympathetic to — even harboring — some guerrilla fighters.

Those rumors weren’t true and were probably started by the army to arouse

public sentiment against the school, Brother Martin said. Anyone not openly supportive of the government was believed to be working against it. Yet Brother Martin also said that unlike his time in Nicaragua, Brother James refrained from entering the political fray and instead focused more on the agricultural and teaching aspects of the job.

Still, Brother James acknowledged the risky political situation.

“The level of violence here is reaching appalling proportions, (murders, torture, kidnappings, threats) and the Church is being persecuted because of its option for the poor,” Brother James wrote.

“Aware of the many difficulties and risks, we continue to work with faith and hope and trust in God’s providence.”

As violence spread throughout the country, Brother Martin and other Roman Catholic religious workers were told by credible sources that someone in a religious order — somewhere in Guatemala — would be killed. But Brother Martin never thought the assassination would reach remote Huehuetenango.

And nobody thought it would be the big guy from Wisconsin.

“While all the other Brothers were talking about the political situation, Brother James was asking about mops and buckets for the kids,” Brother Martin said. “He was apolitical, really.”

Calls from the American Consulate and Roman Catholic Church to investigate the murder poured in to Guatemala City.

Two months after Brother James’ death, the Guatemalan government expressed regret the case had dragged on for so long. Brother James was one of thousands of missing or murdered people in a country ripped apart by bloodshed and political upheaval.

The Guatemalan government eventually concluded that “subversive criminal elements” had probably murdered Brother James. The government then closed the case, without naming the

Today, nearly three decades after Brother James’ death, Brother Martin doesn’t doubt it was a case of mistaken identity.

Years later, a close friend of his with ties to the military confided to the Brothers that Brother James was misidentified.

“He said the priest they killed was by mistake,” Brother Martin said. “Brother James would have been the last one (to be assassinated), but to them, we all looked the same.”

Brother Martin is still shocked and angered by Brother James’ death.

“It was a senseless murder,” he said.

“It was done by a goon squad.”

Brother Martin said it was possible to learn who committed the murders, but doing so only endangered more religious workers and residents. So, it became a simple equation: Risk more lives for the justice of one, or pass on the opportunity to close a murder.

“We had to explain to the Miller family there wouldn’t be justice for his

Brother Francis is quick to point out there were other lay members who also died in Guatemala teaching the faith.

“We wanted the others to be part of the movement toward canonization,” Brother Francis said. “But that part isn’t moving (through the process). This isn’t just about Jim Miller.

“For those of us who knew him, he was ordinary like us,” Brother Francis said.

“But if you die for something you believe in, that’s something altogether different.”

The Vatican will continue to examine Brother James’ case. For example, because he was a martyr, officials will look for just one miracle, instead of the customary two usually required for canonization.

“I suppose if we knew any saint, they wouldn’t always be the easiest people to live around,” Brother Martin said. “And you know, they weren’t born with halos on their heads.

“But he died in the odour of sanctity, and not a lot of people realized his piety,” he said. “His letters are full of asking people for prayers. That impresses me a great deal.”≠

Brother Paulos is the director of Christ the Teacher Institute for Education (CTIE) at Saint Mary’s Nairobi campus.

only helping individuals, but also families and communities and societies,” Brother Paulos said, explaining that CTIE currently has about 225 students.

“In general, I’m helping people to be aware of the ripple effect in the African educational context. I want people to know a general overview of Africa, the number of countries (54), and the number of languages (1,000 of them). There is a huge diversity and variety, which is a source of richness,

Brother Paulos travels north to Winona each year to meet with administration. This past winter, his visit also included numerous presentations to faculty, staff and students on both the Winona and Twin Cities campuses.

“The first thing is for people to be aware of Nairobi and the Saint Mary’s program, and how that program is not

but also sometimes a challenge,” he said. “I also talk about the work of the Brothers in Africa. We have six districts and many, many schools, giving wonderful educational services to thousands of students. The challenges are tremendous, but so is the commitment of the Brothers and their associates.”

Brother Paulos explains that in CTIE’s 15-year history, more than 400 students have graduated. Each of those students, in turn, is now teaching their own students. If each

graduate teaches 50 students per year, multiplied out by the number of years they’ve been teaching, the numbers of people touched is astounding.

“The ripple has to start somewhere and it expands,” he said.

“It’s just like De La Salle did hundreds of years ago.”

And like De La Salle’s early students, the students of CTIE sometimes lack the resources needed for continuing education. “Our program does not attract the rich and powerful,” he said. “Those people looking for money and prestige do not go into education.

Our students want to become educators, and most of them come from outside of Nairobi. They come from very humble and simple backgrounds and they have the desire to become educators. Their funds are very, very limited. One third would not be able to make it if there weren’t some sort of help.”

Brother Paulos explained that sometimes he must ask students to leave, despite efforts to help them find funds to pay for their tuition.

He said, “Let me tell you a story of a student from the poorest area of Kenya where they’re nomads who move around with their cows and goats. These cows and goats are dying by the thousands because of the drought.”

Brother Paulos helped this student find a job in the school library, where she is making 80 cents per hour and works 20 hours per week. “Our hope is that she is feeling confident that she is making what she can and contributing, and at the same time, it gives us opportunities to look for funds,” he said. “If we send these students back where they came from, the opportunity for life is almost closed.”

Elizabeth Ndunge Musau 2nd-Year Student Christ the Teacher Institute for Education Nairobi, Kenya Elizabeth Ndunge Musau is 22, the firstborn in a family of nine.

Her story is one of persistence and of hope.

Because of family discord, Ndunge Musau was forced to, at a very early age, look for food to feed her three younger siblings. “Though very little aged, I decided to be going to school with the children, as the school used to provide lunch. They ate at school and life continued,” she writes.

By the time she completed “class eight,” her father strongly encouraged her to quit school and enter the workforce as a dressmaker. Despite the lack of support, Ndunge Musau fought to stay in school. Studying was difficult, but finding money to continue her education was harder. At times, she would work in a cotton plantation to be able to afford her secondary school tuition.

Her dream is to become a teacher.

“A student at University of Nairobi informed me about Christ the Teacher Institute for Education, and then I traced it,” she said. “I had hoped to receive the Catholic scholarship, though my grades could not allow me. There was darkness in front of me; all along I called upon God to help me as He has always done. My mother has been trying to apply for secret loans to help me out. It has reached a time whereby she can not apply for more loans, before paying the previous payments. She has been asking me to drop my course because she is unable to meet my dues. In contrast, I look forward to achieving my goal.

“Having always struggled, I still maintain my focus. I have always called upon my God to be there as I look for my school fees and even money for my upkeep, in order to fulfill my life dream.

“Being the first lady in our village to attend university study, I am determined to complete my education at Christ the Teacher Institute for Education. Mainly not only to benefit myself, but also to be a role model; to support those women who are still undergoing similar experiences to what I went through. It is my dream to empower the girlchild, to enlighten her. Many girls are still enslaved by unhealthy traditional cultures, cultures that look down on the importance of girl-child education. No matter how hard the path ahead, I am determined to continue with my studies. I pray God will be on my side as He always did.”

As director of CTIE, Brother Paulos said he must encourage and push the students, but also give them hope.

And hope comes from a variety of places. A few years ago, a student from northern Kenya couldn’t pay for his tuition, and Brother Paulos said he was forced to tell him that he needed to go home. The director of Brother Paulos’ community told him, “We cannot let this happen; what would De La Salle say?” and funded a semester of the young man’s studies.

Again, at the student’s third year, Brother Paulos regretfully asked him to leave the program, until funding could be raised. That very afternoon, a check for $6,000 arrived from Saint Mary’s Winona campus volunteer committee.

Potlucks and Friday “Jeans for a Cause” days raised money that allowed the young man to complete his studies.

“I called that student back the next morning,” he said. “He was a very lucky man. And many, many others benefitted. Help looks small in this part of the world, but it goes a long way in Kenya. When you change the lives of students, you change their families and their communities.”

Brother Paulos explained that half of CTIE’s students are religious; they are Brothers and Sisters who are taken back into their communities and begin working at schools. “They have a guaranteed job,” he said. The other half are lay and will look for job opportunities. “So far I have not heard any of them say that they’ve finished their degree and they are jobless,” he said.

“It may not be the job they wanted or the pay they wanted.

The pay for teachers is not high in Kenya, but the need for educators is great.

“Our students are very fortunate to have an opportunity to study in a program that not only cares about their academic activities but also their holistic growth and transformation. We need to go the extra mile and make sure we’re preparing tomorrow’s conscious educators who are willing and determined to be agents of social transformation. That’s the goal of a Lasallian institution.”≠

Friends of CTIE In an on-going effort to foster student success in all of the university’s programs, Saint Mary’s is inaugurating “Friends of CTIE” to help fund scholarships for students at CTIE. Fundraising activities will begin in June, with the goal of providing two scholarships each of the next four years. A full scholarship is approximately $2,500. Three campus groups have already committed to contributing to this effort — the Campus Spirituality Team on the Twin Cities campus, the Winona campus Volunteer Committee, and the College Campus Ministry team.

Father Andrew Beerman ’92 was once a student at Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary. More than 15 years later, he was named its rector.

He smiles and admits he never would have imagined that his vocation would take this full-circle path.

“But that’s the mystery of God’s plan; it’s all part of the blessing,” he said. At first, Father Beerman admits it was a bit overwhelming to take over the role of formation of young men to be priests — and to serve as a model and an inspiration to nearly 60 young men.

“Then I realized it is God doing the work in the heart of these seminarians. We’re simply there to support what God is doing,” he said.

It’s important work. Priests act as mediators between God and man. They give communion, dispense sacraments, celebrate Holy Mass, unite parishioners in marriage, strengthen faith, teach the ways of God and his Church, and save souls. They are there to baptize us as babies as we enter this world and to administer last rites as we leave.

Currently 58 students from nine dioceses and one religious order — from dioceses in South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana (and a religious order in New York) — are living and studying at the seminary which is adjacent to the Saint Mary’s Winona campus.

These students attend the seminary for four years, while they work toward degrees from Saint Mary’s. They then must pursue four years of theology school before becoming ordained.

The numbers of young men pursuing the priesthood at IHM have been higher in the past 10 years, following a regional trend. Though SPRING 2010

It’s hard to pinpoint why more young men are exploring the priesthood as a vocation, Father Beerman said a lot more attention is being paid to young people in helping them grow in their faith. He credits Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI with building a stronger connection to youth and challenging young people to take their faith seriously. “(Pope Benedict) especially asks them to consider where God may be calling them, whether to marriage, priesthood or religious life. He issues a challenge that God has great plans for their lives, in terms of committing their lives to service of others and saving of souls. With a loss of moral truth in society, that is attractive to young people,” Father Beerman said.

Growing up, Father Beerman said his family life had a strong religious foundation. His mother encouraged all of her children to consider priesthood or religious life. “We prayed the rosary together as a family every day, went to monthly confession and at times attended Mass during the week, besides on Sunday,” he said.

In high school, he interviewed the priest in his parish to learn more about the path to becoming a priest, although at the time, he thought he would rather study math or science in college.

At one point, torn in which direction his life should take, he prayed the rosary and left it in God’s hands. He asked God, “If you want me to become a priest, give me a sign.” Shortly afterward, as Father Beerman was attending church in another town, he noticed a sign on the wall with the words, “Father Andy.” “It occurred to me that was the sign I was looking for,” he said.

Pope Benedict XVI declared this a Year for Priests — a year dedicated to prayer for the sanctification and renewal of clergy.

The Pope opened the year with a vespers service at the Vatican June 19, 2009 and will close the celebrations during a World Meeting of Priests in St. Peter’s Square June 11, 2010.

In his address, Pope Benedict said that priestly ordination creates new men who are bestowed with the gift and office of sanctifying, teaching and governing. Without priestly ministry, he said, there would be no Eucharist, no mission and even no Church.

The Year for Priests is in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the “dies natalis” (the day of the death of) Saint John Mary Vianney, the patron saint of parish priests.

Saint John wrote, “A good shepherd, a pastor after God’s heart, is the greatest treasure which the good Lord can grant to a parish and one of the most precious gifts of divine mercy.” To his parishioners, he would say, “Who welcomed your soul at the beginning of your life? The priest. Who feeds your soul and gives it strength for its journey? The priest.

Who will prepare it to appear before God, bathing it one last time in the blood of Jesus Christ? The priest, always the priest. And if this soul should happen to die (as a result of sin), who will raise it up, who will restore its calm and peace? Again the priest.”

In response, Father Beerman decided to attend Saint Mary’s and IHM seminary for a year.

“But as I came here and found a sense of peace in following God and meeting men on a similar path, it became more and more clear that this was what God was asking of me,” he said.

The young men at the seminary, he added, have similar stories of God’s calling, but how they reach their ultimate decision happens in different ways for everyone.

More than 1,000 men have attended the seminary since it was established in 1948. In the Winona Diocese alone, out of 105 priests, 66 are undergraduate alums of Saint Mary’s and IHM seminary, and one is a graduate alum of Saint Mary’s.

Just over a third of the students who attend IHM become ordained. Two hundred and sixty men who attended IHM are currently serving as priests; the others have since died or retired, did not become priests, or dropped out of the priesthood.

It’s during their formation time at IHM Seminary that men receive the guidance and support they need to decide if becoming a priest is the correct path.

Also, the choice is not his alone; the rector, the bishop and the vocation director also decide whether the man should continue his formation.

If students do not choose the priesthood as their lifelong calling, Father Beerman says their time at IHM was not wasted. “They’ve grown closer to God in their faith formation,” he said.

few years of college. “We’re developing them to be the best priests possible, forming them to be pastors in parishes,” Father Beerman said. “Students must learn virtue, compassion, kindness, put aside selfishness and be concerned about others, as well as grow in knowledge and understanding of their faith.”

Besides the liberal arts requirements of SMU, these men are required to have 30 credits of philosophy, 12 credits of theology and one year of Latin.

As they’re expected to be a model and an example for others, seminary students must wear dress pants and a collared shirt.

A big part of their formation is prayer. Students are expected to spend an hour a day in prayer, where they grow closer to Christ.

Another aspect of following Christ is community, Father Beerman said.

Seminary students see themselves as brothers to each other, live in community, and eat supper and breakfast together as a group. They also enjoy sports and extracurriculars like snow football and ultimate Frisbee. Many are active within the university with student senate, athletics, and other clubs or organizations.

And, they must find time to complete

chores at the seminary.

“It’s not just a dorm, it’s their home,” Father Beerman said, explaining that every student shares the responsibility for keeping it clean.

“It’s amazing for me to see God’s

grace at work, to see how these men change in four years, how they grow up and mature and change and become compassionate men,” Father Beerman said. “Seeing them ordained is a great joy.”≠ SPRING 2010

On a path to serve Christ Every young seminarian has a story about their “defining moment” — the events, people or circumstances that led them to consider devoting their lives in service to God. Mitchell Bechtold ’10 and Cristian Reyes ’10 sit across from one another at the table, complete opposites in some ways, yet the same in their religious beliefs and their chosen paths.

Bechtold is originally from St. Cloud, Minn.; right out of high school, he originally wanted to become a sheet-metal worker. In his free time, he’s been involved in choir and student senate.

Reyes is a soccer player from Goshen, Ind., who came to the United States from Mexico 10 years ago as a teenager who wasn’t able to speak any English. When his parish priest suggested he enter the priesthood, Reyes’ immediate reaction was, “No.” Yet both men, in time and through prayer, have come to consider each other brothers at Immaculate Heart of Mary and Saint Mary’s University.

For Reyes that defining moment came after listening to a priest interact with young students. “I was really impressed at how confident he was, and with everything that he was saying, and I decided I wanted to be someone who could help others get to know God,” he said.

Bechtold first began thinking about the priesthood in 11th grade but set his aspirations on becoming a sheet-metal worker. He enrolled two years at St. Cloud State University, where he served as a peer minister and volunteered at a Catholic youth camp.

His defining moment came at camp. “I thought about it more, and there was one moment in particular that the Lord was telling me, ‘I want you to be my priest.’”

Still, there was a time period of adjustment — even after enrolling at the university and moving into IHM seminary — where Bechtold had to come to terms with his decision.

“I had my finger on the eject button for the first semester,” he said with a smile.

“I left my bags packed, but by the end of the year, I had affirmed that coming to Saint Mary’s and the seminary had become one of the best decisions I had made in my adult life.

“I was active in concert choir and at the Newman Center in St. Cloud, and I thought I’d always be a Husky; I didn’t know if I’d ever be a Cardinal. However, my time here has been a time of affirmation of who I want to be and where God wants me to be. Here at Saint Mary’s, there are teachers in the truest sense of the word.

They don’t just throw knowledge at you, but they help you to learn.”

Words like revelation, affirmation and growth are used frequently as the two speak about their time at the seminary, a time where they’ve been able to incorporate campus activities into their routines.

At first Reyes wasn’t sure if he would be allowed to play soccer as a seminarian, but his coaches were flexible in making sure that his responsibilities as a player wouldn’t interfere with his duties as a seminarian.

Bechtold joined the SMU Concert Choir last year and has been active with student senate as a representative for IHM’s Kelly Hall. “It’s been a unique opportunity,” he said. “It’s been a window to look into the other side, the campus aspect.”

The two — along with the other 56 seminarians — truly are part of both worlds, the world of the seminary, and the world of Saint Mary’s.

Reyes said, “We are one in a way but also separated in another way. We are just normal people.” When Reyes’ soccer teammates discovered he was a seminarian, he said they did not treat him differently, but have expressed their respect for his decision.

Bechtold added, “Everyone has a vocation, and we’re pursuing a vocation. It’s just a particular one. Being part of a coeducational campus is a blessing to us as seminarians just as having the seminary on campus is a blessing to a Catholic university.

“We’re brothers, sons, and grandsons.

We’re not exempt from reality. We live through some of the real blessings and trials in life. Those things don’t go away. The question is how can we be there for other people in those times? Priests need prayers; seminarians need prayers. You can’t give something you don’t have.”

The two hope to continue growing in formation. Before becoming ordained, they must continue with four years of theology training.

“My driving force is the sacraments, to be able to serve people at the many stages of their lives,” Bechtold said. “We continually seek to live the words Jesus has given us, ‘Thy will be done.’”

“I hope to, God-willing, be ordained a priest and serve my diocese,” Reyes said.

“Every morning I get up and thank God for being in the seminary, and for the gift of life. I came from a small town in Mexico, and now I’m in the United States studying to become a priest in another culture. That is a miracle. I am hopeful for the future.”≠ WWW.SMUMN.EDU/MAGAZINE

The first group of women students were admitted to Saint Mary’s in 1969.

In the beginning, there were a few adjustments.

Women didn’t have showers or locker rooms at Saint Mary’s. In fact, coaches didn’t think they needed them because women didn’t sweat.

Women’s bathrooms didn’t exist in the beginning either. Sally Cumiskey ’70 recalls using a restroom in an employee lounge area in 1969. When a few bathrooms were reallocated, it was merely the “intended user’s gender name” on the door that changed — not the interior, extraneous plumbing.

Terry (Malloy ’71) Chism laments, “There were early signs that Terry (Malloy) Chism not a lot of planning had been done for the arrival of women on campus. Few gym classes were available, and there were no intramural sports for women, but that didn’t stop us from forming a couple of flag football teams on our own!”

Chism remembers there were 26 women living on the third floor of Skemp in the fall of 1969; she was one of two RAs, helping to transition women into a previously all-men college.

As the 1970 yearbook declared, “We are finally beginning to understand that girls are really here these days, and are likely to remain.” It was clear that Saint Mary’s would never be the same.

In truth, women could argue that their arrival truly saved Saint Mary’s.

When Tony Piscitiello ’69, M’82, now vice president for admission, was a senior, enrollment was down significantly. The administrators wanted to put a resolution before the student senate about going co-ed.

Their hope was to bring the news that “the student senate votes to go co-ed” before the Board of Trustees. Piscitiello chuckles as he remembers how the students, as an addendum, added that the upperclassmen could also have cars on campus.

So car privileges — and the women to drive around in those cars — arrived on campus simultaneously.

Women’s prominence grew quickly. By 1974-75, 45 percent of applicants were women.

As the women’s numbers grew, there were more adjustments to be made.

Pioneering women As one of Saint Mary’s first women graduates, Cumiskey may not think of herself as pioneering, but she didn’t shy away from adversity either — something that’s undoubtedly served her well working for the State of Minnesota as a Winona Sally Cumiskey County court administrator.

But in an undeniable act of courage, Cumiskey wasn’t deterred by the fact that she was the only woman in any of the classes she had at Saint Mary’s. In fact, she said, she doesn’t recall seeing any other women students at all.

But Cumiskey chose to transfer to Saint Mary’s because it had a stronger language program than the other college she was attending. Chism had attended a teen retreat on the Winona

campus the summer before her junior year. The beautiful setting and the affirming atmosphere created by the Christian Brothers stuck in her mind.

But women weren’t yet allowed at Saint Mary’s, so she spent two years at a community college.

“I had already been Marilyn Frost accepted at the University of Minnesota for the fall of 1969 when I learned that Saint Mary’s was going co-ed. I was very excited and applied immediately,” she said.

“The women who were here that first year or two were very brave,” Dr. Marilyn Frost (then Solberg) said. Frost would know. She was hired to teach in

the Psychology Department in 1969, coinciding with the first year women were allowed on campus.

“Brother Julius Winkler ’36 would talk to me about the Brothers, and I would talk to him about women,” Frost said. “One of the biggest concerns back then was, ‘What do I do if one of them cries?’ ” “It was tough for women,” Ken Pellegrini ’72, now associate dean for admission, added, “Many professors had never taught women before.”

Piscitiello remembers large clusters of women walking one another to class, demonstrating that were was strength in numbers.

Civilizing men It wasn’t until 1969 that the college center opened. Before that, meals were served in Griffin Hall. “Some of the guys would say, ‘You mean I have to

get up to get my breakfast and put my pants on?’ ” Frost remembers.

Pellegrini believes that food fights stopped right about the time women started dining with the men of Saint Mary’s.

It was true that women had a positive effect, but the sexist jokes continued. A 1970 yearbook printed the phrase, “Shelves aren’t the only things that are stacked.”

“The faculty members and ‘the guys,’ for the most part, welcomed us that first year, but some were less than gracious about our arrival,” Chism said.

“Early on, an occasional diatribe would appear in the daily student newspaper, The Troll, and several Brothers openly expressed their disapproval of women on campus.”

Many of those early women remember comments from students, and even faculty, Mary Catherine Fox that would now be considered inappropriate, including Mary Catherine Fox ’75, M’89, Ph.D., now professor of interdisciplinary studies.

At the time, those comments seemed less offensive.

Back then Fox was studying theatre — even though it wasn’t yet called “theatre”; it was called

communication studies. Many students were grateful there were women to now play women’s roles in campus productions.

Fox didn’t mind being in the minority in classrooms. She came to Saint Mary’s from an all-girls high

school and after one year at an allwomen Catholic college. Dressed in white hot pants and a blue polka dot halter-top, and lots of eye makeup, she sat down in class with a cigarette dangling from her fingers (which was allowed back then). “There were 24 guys and one other woman, and when they took roll call and came to me, I said, ‘Just call me Fox.’ And all the guys said, ‘WHOA!’” It was a different culture. Alcohol was available, with a legal drinking age of 18. Yet rules for men and women in dorms were pretty tight in the early years. Fox remembers students saying goodnight to dates loudly at the front door of Griffin Hall and then letting them in quietly through the back door.

At first, men and women had to stay in designated locations during specified visiting hours. As more women came on campus, the rules quickly softened.

Faculty Even curmudgeonly faculty members became accustomed to having women in class. Brother Ambrose Trusk ’43 originally didn’t think women were naturally cut out for chemistry, but an early woman in his course proved to him that women had just as much potential as men. “He became a convert,” Piscitiello said.

Frost had no problem educating her male students about abilities of women either. In the psychology rat lab, when students teased her by saying, “She’s not going to touch that rat,” Frost would pick up the rat and hold it out to her manly students’ shocked faces.

In general, despite some bumps in the coeducational road, early women feel they were welcomed. Cumiskey credits the fact that students got very individualized help from the instructors. Overall, she remembers attending Saint Mary’s as a good experience. “The atmosphere was pretty friendly when I was there,” she said.

“What I remember even more was the feeling of connection between faculty and students,” Chism said. “It was evident in the small class sizes (nowhere to hide when you hadn’t completed an assignment!) and the opportunities for conversations outside the classroom. It was common to see a

group of students and a professor having a lively discussion in the College Center Pub after class or in the evening.”

Back then it was more acceptable for faculty to socialize with students outside of the classroom, “which was pivotal to many of us in terms of attachments to this place,” Fox said.

Changes in publications As Fox, Frost, Piscitiello and Pellegrini look back on yearbooks of the early ’70s, names of early pioneering women fly about the room. The first female faculty and staff are quickly remembered by name: Jackie Bernard, Marietta Conroy, Mona McMahon, Margery Rhode and Sue Maples.

For many early women, Frost said, there were similar connections. In the beginning, there were faculty wives clubs, and within a few years, many of those wives started working on campus.

For three years one woman student’s picture saturated publications, yearbooks and brochures as the “token” female. But yearbooks quickly changed as women proliferated at Gaslight and Blue Angel, and became involved with clubs and organizations.

Gradually women began to emerge on the sports scene as well, with intramurals, long before Title IX brought women to an equal playing field.

Expectations change as more women enroll “I remember the transition being relatively smooth,” Frost said. “But once women got to be more sizeable in numbers, then there were more concerns and demands. The expectations changed. There needed to be better facilities and more exposure to women’s ideas.” Frost remembers how committees were required to have at least one woman member. “I served on a lot of committees,” she said.

It was also an era of great social and cultural change — demonstrations, controversy and discord during the Vietnam era, and an emerging women’s liberation movement.

“At the five-year mark, there was a big assessment of all of the academic departments as part of women’s issues,” Frost said. “That’s when things really changed. We started actively trying to find women for faculty positions. We got to critical mass the same time as the national movement.”

“The women who attended Saint Mary’s during the ’70s could see that it offered a unique educational environment and valued the Lasallian commitment to quality teaching,” Chism said. “They engaged and challenged the administration and faculty to ensure equity and create even better programs for all students.

They assumed leadership roles on campus and persisted in helping shape a learning environment that was inclusive of women.”

Women today “I’d remind (current women students) that there’s almost no career today that isn’t available to them,” Chism said.

“And I’d emphasize the role that a liberal arts education plays in being successful in today’s fast-paced, complicated world. I’d encourage them to take advantage of educational opportunities and travel that allow them to experience diverse ideas and cultures. And even though ‘we’ve come a long way, baby,’ women, in particular, need to continue active support of ongoing efforts to ensure that women achieve leadership positions and other positions of influence throughout our society.”

Women today need to know about the continued inequality of

women, Fox said. “Even when I tell them that women still make 79 cents on the dollar to men, they think, ‘It’ll be fine.’ It’s a major shock for them when they leave here.”

There are many significant changes from the early ’70s. Chism lists the campus growth, expansion of majors, changing student demographics, and the balance of men and women in the student body.

“What hasn’t changed, thankfully, is the Lasallian tradition and the student-centered environment,” she said. “I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Saint Mary’s was a great place to grow intellectually, to strengthen values, and to build strong bonds and friendships — and to have some fun along the way! It will always be a special place to me.”≠

Celebrating Women of the ’70s: Oct. 7-10, 2010 In 1970, the first group of women graduated from Saint Mary’s — a pivotal event in the school’s history. “First Women of Saint Mary’s” Event Thursday, Oct. 7 Opening Reception, Minnesota Marine Art Museum Make plans to arrive early to connect with fellow Saint Mary’s alumnae of the ’70s. The museum features four galleries of world-class art and artifacts, and is located at a picturesque setting on the banks of the Mississippi River.

Friday, Oct. 8 Opportunities will be available throughout the day to take special campus tours, participate in classes, and interact with current students, faculty and staff through a variety of open houses hosted by academic departments, offices and student life.

On-campus programming A series of events that acknowledged and celebrated the history of women at Saint Mary’s was held on the Winona campus this spring. Events included a discussion with Nikki Fennern, SMU athletic director, on women in sports; a speaker about the barriers and opportunities for women in science; a reception for women athletes at a women’s hockey game; a panel discussion on women’s religious orders in higher education; and a celebration of Women’s History Month, with a reception hosting “decade tables.”

Additionally, throughout the year, Brother William conducted luncheons with five different groups of women (including alums, faculty, staff and students on both campuses), during which they’ve discussed their dream for the future of the university.

Sister Margaret Mear, BVM ■ The top of Brother Charles Severin’s bronze head is now worn smooth.

Hundreds of students rub the top of the legendary biology teacher’s head as they walk through the lobby of Heffron Hall. They hope a little rub will bring them some much-needed luck with presentations, finals or even blind dates.

“Brother Charles had such a neat skull,” Sister Margaret Mear, BVM remembers. Sister Margaret, a longtime art department faculty member and gallery curator, molded the bust from clay so she could take step-by-step slides to show her sculpture classes. She remembers Brother Charles as a willing subject.

“He would ask me, ‘How’s my mud face?’ she said.

Sister Margaret laughs that her artwork and Brother Charles’ head now play a role in SMU tradition. “(Brother Charles) would have hated that,” she said with a laugh. “He was a scientist, so of course he didn’t believe in luck.”

It was a mixture of luck and faith that got Sister Margaret her position teaching in the Art Department and as the gallery director with Saint Mary’s in 1976.

“I knew the job was mine if I wanted it because when I was little, my mother put my sister and I in the hands of Saint Joseph to protect us. That Saint Mary’s art building was named Saint Joseph’s Hall was a good sign.”

The mid ’70s were a very different time in university history. Hitchhiking, she said, was widely accepted, and the university was still struggling to adapt to having women on campus. “It was still definitely a man’s school,” she said. At the time, she remembers she was not permitted to have a key to the art gallery, because — as a woman — she would undoubtedly lose the keys.

“When I first came, I thought I had to get the reputation right away for being tough,” she said.

“One day a handsome and charming young man came into my office to apologize for missing a class.

I had my back to him. He told me he had an accident and needed stitches. I told him, ‘I’ll believe it when I see the stitches.’ ” When Sister Margaret turned around, she saw the student standing there wearing only a pair of cutoff shorts, and she began to regret her words, realizing that the stitches could be in an inappropriate hidden location. “But they were in his head; thank you, Lord,” she said.

In addition to teaching drawing and sculpting, Sister Margaret served as the university’s gallery curator throughout her tenure except for two times, once when she brought in an unapproved artist, and the second time when she refused to bring in a particular artist.

She’s known for her tenacity, and for her quirky humor. “(Students) think I’m crazy,” she says with a chuckle. “It’s a teaching tool. You have to get their attention if you’re going to teach them anything. If they think you’re crazy, they keep an eye on you.”

Sister Margaret says she joined the sisterhood because, “God knocked me off my horse. I was a senior in high school and I heard the call, as they say.” Becoming an art teacher, she said, became a natural path as she enjoyed doing art.

And her favorite subject has always been horses, whether she’s drawing, sculpting, carving from wood or molding metal.

“I remember my parents saying, ‘Poor Margaret.

What is she going to do for a living? All she can do is draw horses,’ ” she remembers.

It’s fitting that one of Sister Margaret’s works represented on campus includes a welded horse sculpture on the lawn in front of Saint Mary’s Hall.

She also was commissioned for the arch on the Memorial Plaza and a second cast bronze portrait bust — of university benefactor Bill Hendrickson in front of the Hendrickson Center.

That project, she said, was particularly fun because she got to travel to Florida and eat out every day — often from places where she didn’t recognize the food on the menu.

She’s also happy with the finished product.

“When his wife of 50 years said, ‘You’ve got it; you’ve captured him perfectly,’ I quit right there.”

She regrets she never had an opportunity to do a bust of Brother Louis DeThomasis, previous SMU president and current chancellor of the university, although she “threatened” to make him an unwilling subject in her art on a couple of occasions. “Artists make bad enemies,” she said. “But he would have been a wonderful subject.”

In her retirement this spring, Sister Margaret plans to live with Sister M. Jerome Day, BVM in a trailer in a remote wooded area of Dubuque, and use the basement for a studio. “It will be very peaceful and quiet,” she said. “It will be different.”

She also hopes to bring her horse, Moose, to her new home eventually.

This fall, she knows she’ll miss her familiar routine. “I’ll miss the people and the students, not the grading – that’s for sure,” she said.

Sister Margaret tells her successor that “she’ll need to keep moving.”

Sister Margaret — who is the only woman teaching in the Department of Art & Design — optimistically uses the pronoun “she.” “I hope it’s a she,” she said. “She’ll have to be able to hold her own, and she’ll need a good sense of humor.”≠

“I was in college when ‘Star Trek’ came out. There were downtown Chicago riots, and there was Lieutenant Uhura on the bridge of the Enterprise.

We were in a Cold War, and ‘Star Trek’ had a Russian,” she said. “The world did not look too promising, but every episode of Star Trek had an uplifting message … although some of them were kind of dumb.”

This is truly a milestone for any university and a reason for all of us to reflect on what Saint Mary’s means to us — and to envision Saint Mary’s mission in the future.

Planning is underway for year-long centennial festivities.

We’d like you Dr. John Domanico ’77 to help us Saint Mary’s University make these Alumni Board President events successful. All of our alumni have been invited and encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas about how to make this the celebration of the century.

This year we celebrate the 40-year legacy of women at Saint Mary’s. Ever since our first group of 26 women students arrived in 1969, who could argue that the choice to “go coed” wasn’t an important and brilliant idea? We have all witnessed women’s contributions to the university and admired their accomplishments in becoming outstanding leaders and alums. To assist in recruiting new students to Saint Mary’s, the Alumni Association along with the Office of Admission has launched the “Suggest a Student” initiative. On Oct. 24, 2009, the Alumni Association sponsored the first Lasallian Day of Service. More than 50 alumni and friends at five locations in the Twin Cities, Winona and Chicago lent their time and service to others.

I had the opportunity to witness both Chicago sites, Holy Family Rectory and San Miguel School. It was heartwarming to see young and older alumni working together with students from both schools on projects that will make a difference in their lives.

Alumni who participated at the Twin Cities project sites, Feed My Starving Children and Project for Pride in Living, described the same success as they prepared 39,000 meals to be distributed around the world to hungry children and improved a Minneapolis neighborhood by working with residents on a neighborhood garden. On the same day, about 200 current undergraduate students volunteered their time to participate in Make a Difference Day in service to others in the Winona community. This day of service is a new initiative with a goal to promote Lasallian faith and ideals through meaningful service to others. Please consider volunteering next Oct. 23 when more cities will be included.

The experiences and education we received from Saint Mary’s is invaluable, and it continues to be a special place. Twin Cities Alumni Boat Cruise On July 23, 2009, a group of young alumni spent an evening cruising Lake Minnetonka for the annual Twin Cities Alumni Boat Cruise. On Aug. 12, 2009 the Alumni Association, along with the Kabara Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies and the Office of Career Services & Internships, hosted a free alumni networking event.

This event brought more than 100 alumni of both the College and Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs together to connect, network and advance their professional careers. An energetic keynote address was given by John Montague, President of Muev, Inc., titled “Power of Our Networks.” The event concluded with a reception for professional networking, which was sponsored by Don ’80 & Donna (Pagliarello ’80) Aleksy of True Vision Enterprise.

Cardinals helping Cardinals Program includes four ways to strengthen SMU 1998 alum Alex Hove welcomes Catherine McDonald ’10 to the world of Target Corp.

A Job Connection Alex Hove ’98, a senior process analyst at Target Corporation, walks around a local Target store, eagerly pointing out the inner workings of self-scanners, topselling merchandise, displays and up-andcoming changes.

“Can you tell I love my job?” he asks with a smile.

It’s just the thing Catherine McDonald ’10 wants to hear — especially since she was just hired as an executive trainee/executive team leader at Target Corp.

And it was Hove, a fellow Cardinal, who helped her get a foot into the automatic doors of one of our nation’s most popular retailers. Hove might say, if he was prone to puns, that he thought she was already “right on target”; all she needed was a little support to hit the big red bullseye.

McDonald, a senior marketing major, said she had progressed to the last interviews when she connected with Hove. “Alex was more than willing to offer me advice from his personal experience and information on the company to help me prepare for my interviews,” she said. “His knowledge and perspective was very helpful.

“After speaking with Alex, I was able to better understand how my talents and qualifications would complement the position, and I had a more realistic understanding of the company’s ideals and philosophy. I identified with and respected their mission.”

Hove has worked with Target as a contractor and a full-time employee for three years. “Although not involved in the hiring process, I worked with Catherine to discuss the corporate culture and the benefits of working with Target Corporation,” he said. “We talked about my experiences at Target. This helped solidify her desire to interview and helped put her at ease. Saint Mary’s has a well-rounded educational program and produces positive, hard-working graduates. This, combined with an outgoing friendly personality, made Catherine a great fit for Target.”

“I feel honored that Alex took the time to encourage and advise a fellow cardinal,” McDonald said. “I feel so grateful to be a part of such a caring and involved community. It is generous and compassionate alumni like Alex that make the SMU community so great. I look forward to opportunities where I can assist other Cardinals in the same way.”

Job Network This past fall Saint Mary’s unveiled a new free, online service that connects SMU students and alumni with job and internship opportunities, posted by members of the larger Saint Mary’s community — tapping into a network of successful and supportive alumni and friends.

This joint project of the SMU Alumni Association and the Career Services and Internship Office has taken wings and spread to many other areas of the university including admissions, development and student development.

Jackie Baker, director of Internships and Career Services, said approximately 100 available positions have been posted through Cardinals Helping Cardinals.

“I envision this program growing substantially over time,” she said.

Both she and Meg Richtman ’97, director of Alumni Relations, can attest that alumni are using the service more and more.

“I’m being contacted by more alumni than I ever have. Alumni are more aware of the benefits this program offers,” Baker said. “Cardinals Helping Cardinals is one more resource that we can provide to our students, and we value being able to help our students transition into successful careers.”

“And it’s one more way to connect alumni with our campus,” Richtman added.

The two call the service “a win-win,” stressing that both students and employers benefit by using this site.

“Our alums can have a huge impact on our students’ lives — to get them in the door and give them opportunities.

This is one more way for alumni to give back to their alma mater,” Richtman said.

“We’re proud of our alums and their accomplishments. And we appreciate what they can do to help our students. I hear time and time again that our alums value their education. And they know the value their education has been in their careers.”

Employers also have the opportunity to bring in students who have the same strong educational background they’ve had. “Our students are well-rounded, and many have had leadership roles on campus and can take those experiences and apply them to their jobs,” Baker said.

Cardinals Helping Cardinals serves as a resource for students and alumni from the Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs (SGPP) as well.

SGPP students who are employers have access to students. And SGPP students have opportunities to apply for jobs as well, because it’s not just entry-level positions that are being posted.

Class Support Skip Lawson ’75 and Tom Schultz ’75 set up an assembly line in Schultz’s kitchen one day. Armed with a stack of envelopes and a couple of beverages, the two of them sent out personalized letters to their entire Saint Mary’s class.

Thankfully stamps come self-adhesive now.

“It took about five hours; it was a blast,” said Lawson.

“It took slightly longer than (five hours),” Schultz said, “But it was fun.”

Their goal was and is to raise class participation in giving to the university, to invite their class members to their 35th anniversary this summer at Homecoming, and to reconnect with old friends.

“We leaned on each other to bring back some memories,” Schultz said. “As we would look at the names and sign the letter, Skip would say, ‘OK, for $500, do you remember … ’ ” And we would go from there. Many times we would need to reference someone’s nickname or a class they were in or other interactions we had.”

“Both Tom and I have not had any interaction with some of our class for 35 years, but that wasn’t important,” Lawson said. “If you liked the person, a smile appeared on your mug. As I told Tom, we were a pretty tight class. And after this exercise, I still believe that.”

The two came up with the catchy ditty, “35 at 35” — meaning they hope to increase their class giving rate to 35 percent by their 35th anniversary. “That was Tom,” Lawson said, giving him all the credit.

Lawson and Schultz live about 20 minutes from each other, Schultz in Cary, Ill., and Lawson in Mt. Prospect, Ill. “Although we may not see each other very often, it only takes seconds to feel like it was just yesterday we talked,” Schultz said. “And this is pretty common to reconnect with (others from Saint Mary’s) very quickly.”

Schultz said his reasons for assisting with this project are multiple.

“Together and by association; Brother William’s vision, the Lasallian vision, is a great fit with what we feel about Saint Mary’s,” he said. “We’re trying to raise the participation rate to at least 35 percent, and this could be a small dollar amount. We’re just focusing on getting participation.”

He asks his classmates, “Can we provide more resources to future students and their families to allow them

to attend SMU, gaining the education and life experiences that have provided a solid foundation for us and have shaped our lives?”

Suggest a Student Neil Leibundguth ’09 (who now works in the Office of Admission) admits sheepishly that he probably wouldn’t have applied to Saint Mary’s if it weren’t for his high school psychology teacher Bob Wortel ’91, M’93, ’97.

It was Wortel’s enthusiastic endorsement — along with a free application — that convinced him to apply. “He just told me how he went to a small liberal arts college in Minnesota and he told about all the music shows, Blue Angel and Gaslight, and about all the great times he had playing music,” Leibundguth said.

Though Leibundguth majored in political science, he knew he wanted to continue playing guitar and bass in college as well. Saint Mary’s seemed like a perfect fit. “(Bob) was overjoyed. He kept going on and on about what a great time I would have. And I had a great time. I really enjoyed myself just like he said I would.”

Mentoring Program Yet another offshoot of the Cardinals Helping Cardinals program is a mentoring program called College Colleagues, through which underclassmen are mentored by upperclassmen, faculty and staff.

Mentors can assist with hooking up new and transfer students to resources, providing answers and advice, and serving as a support network.

Potentially upperclassmen could then transition to a mentor relationship with alumni, bringing this program to a full circle with the job network component.

Inaugural Young Alumni Weekend a success More than 100 young alumni returned to Winona Sept. 11-13 to soak up some sun, balance precariously on the ropes course, reminisce with classmates and faculty, and clean up Gilmore Creek. Some even nostalgically gathered in the dining room to partake in caf food again. SMU’s inaugural Young Alumni Weekend included a multitude of activities centered around food, fun and friendships.

The Class of 2004 enjoyed a special anniversary barbeque at the gazebo on campus. As these classmates donated money for the gazebo as their senior class gift, it served as the perfect gathering place for more than 20 graduates, who returned to campus to celebrate their fiveyear reunion.

The Friday evening reception with faculty and staff was a highlight for many alumni, as it was an opportunity for them to reconnect with the people who have made such an impact on their lives.

One of the most highly attended events included a Challenge Ropes Course activity — through which alumni had the chance to challenge themselves and work together as teams, both 30 feet high above the ground and just a couple feet off the ground.

More than 80 young alums got together for appetizers, drinks and conversation later that evening during a social gathering at Betty Jo Byoloski’s in downtown Winona.

The weekend coincided with Cardinal ‘M’ Club Weekend, giving SMU young alumni opportunities to cheer on Cardinal Athletics and enjoy the alumni and friends pig roast picnic.≠

Lasallian Day of Service and Make a Difference Day ■ On Oct. 24, 2009, dozens of Saint Mary’s alums — and hundreds of current students — picked up shovels, packaged food, planted flowers and pounded hammers, all in the name of community service.

The Saint Mary’s Alumni Association, along with its Board of Directors, sponsored a volunteer service day called the Lasallian Day of Service. Six groups of alumni and friends located in Chicago, Winona and the Twin Cities participated in this inaugural event.

Alums volunteered at five different locations: San Miguel School on the Back of the Yards Campus and Holy Family Rectory, both located in Chicago; Project for Pride in Living 2 and Feed my Starving Children, both located in the Twin Cities; and at Saint Mary’s Winona campus.

At Feed my Starving Children, volunteers of all ages helped pack 39,000 meals to be distributed to hungry children located all around the world.

At Project for Pride in Living, volunteers mulched a large oak tree, two rain gardens and four fountain gardens. Volunteers also tilled and seeded a large natural prairie grass area. To top it all off, volunteers tilled, 4 mulched, planted and fenced off a 1,500 square-foot garden that will be used to sustain future landscaping needs of new developments and rehabilitations of existing homes.

At the Holy Family Rectory, alums removed wallpaper; scraped loose plaster and paint from walls and a ceiling; patched small cracks with joint compound; sanded and taped woodwork and shelf rails; and wrapped window coverings in plastic.

On behalf of the Saint Ignatius And at San Miguel School, volunteers did Parent Organization, we would like a variety of cleanup work, inside and out. to thank all of you for your ■ Simultaneously, back in Winona, 195 students and five staff participated in Make a Difference Day. Volunteers shoveled dirt, moved bricks, hung sheetrock, painted, sorted clothes and assisted with a variety of other work at 35 locations throughout the Winona area.

Saint Mary’s hopes that this annual day of service continues to grow. Organizers hope that more alumni, students and friends, across the country (and beyond) honor SMU’s Lasallian mission by giving back to their communities, schools and churches. Dr. Jane (Weydert ’86) Homeyer Jane (Weydert) Homeyer, Ph.D., began her career as a forensic scientist at the Northern Illinois Police Crime Laboratory and was eventually promoted to the laboratory’s executive director. Because of her investigative work in 1993, two killers involved in a murder at Brown’s Chicken & Pasta in Palatine, Ill., were brought to justice. Five years into her career, Jane joined the FBI in its laboratory division as the unit chief of the Forensic Science Training Unit in Quantico, Va. Three years later, she was promoted to section chief of the Forensic Science Support Section and eventually led Director Robert Mueller’s initiative to reengineer the entire FBI training efforts. Homeyer assumed her current position as director of Competencies and Standards for the Intelligence Community (IC) Chief Human Capital Officer of the Director of National Intelligence in April 2006. She is responsible for establishing common competencies and standards for the IC workforce to help unify the 16 IC agencies.

LASALLIAN SERVICE

James Cunningham ’49 James Cunningham has educated the poor for more than 50 years. He spent 18 fulfilling years as a Christian Brother, but it was the eight years he spent working in Nicaragua that he found life-changing. There he witnessed intense poverty, extreme poor living conditions and severe illness. He soon recognized that teaching these students had to extend beyond the classroom and into their daily lives. One day, looking down on the school’s muddy fields, he realized these students needed a gymnasium. After a year of soliciting funds, he raised enough money to purchase a pre-fabricated gym. Cunningham’s college career began at Saint Mary’s at the tender age of 16; a life-long learner, he has attended classes in 16 colleges and universities in six states and two foreign countries. He has authored a book, “Education on the Wild Side,” about his years in Nicaragua, and he is in the process of publishing two more books.

LASALLIAN SERVICE

Christine (Coglianese ’93) Collins For the past 12 years, Christine (Coglianese) Collins has infused Lasallian ideals and faithbased values into her youth ministry group at Our Lady of the Woods Parish in Orland Park, Ill. Her work as a youth minister includes weekly liturgy and advanced faith exploration sessions. She also initiated summer service trips to Appalachia involving more than 100 high school students. This summer she is planning a pilgrimage to Lourdes, France. In recognition for her efforts, Collins was awarded the Knights of Columbus Regnum Caeli Award in 2000.

In 2008, she was presented with the Catholic Charities Vincentian Award and was also recognized by the Archdiocese of Chicago for her and her group’s work with soup kitchens in the Chicago area. She also currently serves on the Archdiocese of Chicago Vicariate V Leadership Award Committee.

ALUMNI APPRECIATION

Timothy Horan ’70 Tim Horan’s dedication to Saint Mary’s University can never be questioned. He has generously shared his time and talents with SMU by first serving as a member of the Alumni Board of Directors from 2001-2003 and then on the Board of Trustees from 2004-2009. But his involvement doesn’t stop there. Horan is also a former parent, phone volunteer, and fundraising volunteer. He is currently assisting the Office of Development with raising funds to endow the Brother Raphael Memorial Scholarship. A strong advocate of the university, Horan is also a loyal and dedicated benefactor.

Szafranski, who stopped a school record-tying 152 shots a year ago, finished with 135 saves this season, pushing his school-record career saves total to 442. He finished as the MIAC leader in saves (84) and saves-per-game (8.54), and, after recording four shutouts in his first three seasons combined, Szafranski picked up five shutouts this season. … The Cardinals put together two, two-game winning streaks this season — holding their opponents without a goal during both streaks. … Junior Juamaine Venter (Rochester, Minn.) — who scored the gamewinning goal in each of SMU’s last two wins this season — finished tied for the team lead in goals (3) with fellow juniors Steve Boussie (Troy, Mich.) and Ryan Rademacher (La Crosse, Wis.).

Sibik’s 14 goals in 2009, which are a single-season career high, gave her 34 for her career and moved her within three goals of Barb Bock ’87 for No. 6 all-time. … Sibik has recorded eight multiple-goal games in her career — including posting her first career three-goal and four-goal games this season.

GOLF MEN’S MIAC FINISH: 10th WOMEN’S MIAC FINISH: 8th BRIEFLY: Sophomore Gia Puch (Des Plaines, Ill.) recorded a career-best round of seven-over 79 in the opening round of the MIAC Championships. It was the second-lowest round in the women’s program’s history. … Senior Katelyn Rizzi (Austin, Minn.) closed out her final tournament with rounds of 85-88-86 at the MIAC Championships. Volleyball advances to national tournament For the second national tournament match in as many days, Saint Mary’s University squared off against a team they had never faced before in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III national tournament.

Unlike their national tournament opener against Thomas More, however, SMU’s semifinal opponent’s reputation preceded them.

Top-seeded and host Washington University in St. Louis has been a fixture in the NCAA National Tournament, entering this year’s NCAA Central Regional semifinal against the Cardinals boasting an NCAA-record nine national championships — not to mention 23 straight trips to the NCAA National Volleyball Tournament, including appearances in the NCAA championship match in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007.

The Cardinals knew all about the Bears’ gaudy NCAA Tournament accolades — how could they not, with those nine national championship banners staring down at them from the fieldhouse rafters.

What the Cardinals didn’t know, was how to stop WU’s high-octane offense, led by Erin Albers, as the Bears improved to 81-12 in NCAA Tournament play — including 35-2 at home — with a 3-1 (25-21, 24-26, 25-18, 25-22) NCAA Central Regional semifinal win over SMU. “It’s really hard to be too disappointed, because I thought we played a great match — probably our best match of the year,” said SMU coach Mike Lester, whose team closed out its season with a 22-10 overall record — the most wins since the Cardinals won 28 games en route to their NCAA Central Regional semifinal appearance in 2000.

“You never want to feel good about a loss, but this team can hold their heads high — they left everything on the court.”

Junior Sarah Gardner, Rochester, who collected a team-leading 28 kills, while also delivering a team-high six service aces, 23 digs, six assists and four kills, was named to the NCAA Central

Region All-Tournament Team. It was the fifth time in six tournaments this season that Gardner was named to an alltournament team.

“I can't say enough about how proud I am of this group — and it all starts with our seniors,” said Lester, who watched Brittany Cherwinka (Faribault, Minn.), Courtney Runge (St. James, Minn.), Jessica Larson (Pine Island, Minn.) and Pam Stanton (Mundelein, Ill.) play their final collegiate matches in the regional semifinals. “That (senior) group was the heart and soul of this team.

Everyone just fed off their energy all season, and it was no different in the national tournament.

“This team never stopped fighting; they never gave up or threw in the towel. We played an amazing collegiate volleyball match (against Washington University). Unfortunately, we came out on the wrong end of it.”

■ GARDNER ALL-REGION, ALLAMERICAN: Gardner collected a pair of American Volleyball Coaches Association post-season honors, as the junior rightside hitter was named AVCA First-Team All-Central Region, while also garnering honorable-mention AVCA All-American honors. Gardner closed out the season as SMU’s kill leader with 386 (3.16 kills per set). She appeared in all 122 sets,

boasting a .272 attack percentage, 55 service aces, 197 digs, 58 blocks and 75 assists.

■ GARDNER, MATE ALL-MIAC FIRST TEAM: Gardner and Jessica Mate (St. Charles, Ill.) proved to be a lethal onetwo punch for the Cardinals, who earned a berth in their second straight MIAC Tournament, compiling a 6-5 conference record to go with their 22-10 overall mark. Gardner led the Cardinals in kills with 152 — second-most in the MIAC behind Kim Smisek of St. Olaf (181) and just four more than Mate, whose .291 attack percentage was a team high and ranked sixth in the conference. Gardner also recorded a team-high 24 service aces, 85 digs and 20 blocks in SMU’s 11 conference games, with Mate tallying 35 digs and 14 blocks.

■ LEGATT EARNS MIAC HONOR: As part of a conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the MIAC announced the fourth annual All-MIAC Sportsmanship team for volleyball, with Lindsey Legatt ’11 (Sartell, Minn.) named as the Cardinals’ representative. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.≠

SMU scores with ‘world-class’ soccer team Saint Mary’s University men’s soccer coach Chris Dembiec may want to consider learning a second language.

The question is which one? Maybe Spanish.

Or Creole.

Or Swahili.

Or maybe Korean.

After all, this year, his team went global.

This past fall, Dembiec added five new international players — along with three returning — to create a true melting pot of diverse cultures.

And the fourth-year head coach wouldn’t have it any other way.

“The international pipeline actually began as an accident, but it has aligned quite well with how we’ve enhanced our recruiting and aligned ourselves more with the Lasallian mission of the university,” said Dembiec.

“It’s a great learning experience for everyone involved.

Each international player brings a unique experience to our American players and, in turn, they are also learning so much about our cultures here in the states.”

Jovenel D’Haiti and Jermaine Walker have been mainstays on the Cardinal roster since their freshmen years in 2006. D’Haiti came to SMU via Evanston, Ill., but his family is from Haiti. Walker, also from Evanston, is a native of Jamaica.

Cristian Reyes ’11, who is originally from Puebla, Mexico, joined the Cardinals last year as a sophomore, while newcomers Ovin Munmohan ’13 (London, England), Tom Onsembe ’13 (Nairobi, Kenya), Abdulai Habib ’13 (Ghana), Juamaine Venter ’11 (South Africa) and Ji-Hoon Kim ’13 (South Korea) have contributed to the team this season.

“I can’t take credit for bringing all of these players here,” admitted Dembiec, noting that Walker — one of three seniors on this year’s team — was a product of the previous coaching staff, while D’Haiti was actually lured to SMU by Walker himself. Reyes is a seminarian at Immaculate Heart of Mary.

“We were lucky with those three, but the rest of our international players have come through a lot of time and hard work on our coaching staff’s part,” he said.

Getting them on campus may have been the hard part for Dembiec and assistant coach Matt Perrigo, but fitting all the pieces together has been nothing short of pure enjoyment.

“It’s very interesting getting so many different styles melded into the American college game,” Dembiec said.

“These guys present a real passion for the game. They show that soccer in other countries is more than a suburban phenomenon.

“Tom (Onsembe) played on clay surfaces in Kenya, Ovin (Munmohan) brings a full understanding of the neighborhood rivalries in London; Cristian (Reyes) likes the small, short passing game and 1-on-1 abilities played

in Mexico; Ji-Hoon (Kim) enjoys the artistry of the game and Abdulai (Habib) relishes in his athletic abilities with the ball and likes the freedoms of the game,” explained Dembiec. “In turn, our American guys really appreciate their passion and differences. They have learned a more global view of what soccer stands for around the world.”

For students who are away from their family, friends and the comforts of their homelands, the adjustment of living and studying in the U.S. is difficult.

“I get homesick at times. I miss my family — my mom, my brother, my sister — I miss my friends and above all, I miss my comfort zone,” said Onsembe. “I have encountered quite a few obstacles in my short time here — the language barrier being one of them. I do speak English, but it’s more of a broken English, which makes my understanding and reaction a bit slower.

“The different culture and the language have been the toughest things to try and overcome,” he said.

“Adjusting to a new life away from friends and my family that I love has been difficult,” Munmohan added.

“What I miss most about Jamaica is my family, friends and the great food,” said Walker.

Yet, as much as they miss the comforts of home, they are also finding life at Saint Mary’s enjoyable.

“I love the scenery. I’m a big fan of the greenery and the welcoming people,” Munmohan said. “Saint Mary’s make you feel like a part of a community. The professors make sure that all of their students are taken care of — just like our coaching staff does.”

“The people I have met since I’ve been here have been great,” Walker said. “It’s made being so far away from home a little easier.”

The men’s soccer team roster includes a number of international players including, from left, Abdulai Habib, Jama Isse, Ji-Hoon Kim, Cristian Reyes, Bobby Gas, Ovin Mummohan, Tom Onsembe and Jovenel D’Haiti.

Onsembe said he had always dreamed of playing soccer in a standardized facility with a coach, a grass field and all the necessary equipment — and to have people come and watch him play. “Now that I am living that dream, it’s overwhelming,” he said.

“When I came over (from Kenya to Winona), I had one thing in mind — life was going to be hard,” he added. “I didn’t think I would be able to make any friends. But it was just the opposite. Everyone has been so supportive.

“I like the fact that the people are more friendly and welcoming. They smile at you and want to talk to you. I like the bluffs, the highways, the shopping centers, and the hardworking, inspiring people here at Saint Mary’s.”

Dembiec thinks these players should look in the mirror to see the true faces of inspiration.

“All of these guys have worked extremely hard to maintain their ideals of the game, while learning a new system and characteristics of American college soccer,” Dembiec said. “It can be difficult for an American student to leave home and go to college, but these men have also had to face changes not only in surroundings, but in an entire culture — without their support system.

“It’s really hard to imagine how tough that must be.

They are to be admired for the big step they took — and the manner in which they have brought their cultures to us,” added Dembiec. “Our job is to make sure that they understand that they are part of our family now and they always will be.”≠

Friendly Rivalry Alums hit home runs with minor league ball teams By day, they’re used to wearing ties and suit coats. Quick changes in phone booths aren’t necessary.

Their workdays are filled with meetings. Leaping buildings in a single bound isn’t on the agenda, at least most days.

But Patrick Salvi ’75 and John Ehlert ’67 don’t need to be costumed crusaders to have alter egos and archenemies.

By day, Salvi is a highly successful lawyer who founded the law firm of Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard in Waukegon, Ill., and Ehlert ’67, is now retired from serving as president and CEO of Ashton Management Corporation in St. Louis Park, Minn.

But when the umpire shouts, “Play Ball,” the mild-mannered businessmen take on completely different personas — that of owners of minor-league baseball teams.

And those archenemies? Each other.

Ehlert has been the owner of the Kansas City T-Bones since they moved to Kansas City from Duluth, Minn., in 2003, while Salvi has owned the Gary Southshore RailCats since 2008.

And both teams just happen to be in the same league — the Independent Northern League.

The similarities between Salvi and Ehlert don’t end with owning minor league baseball teams. Both are Saint Mary’s alums; Salvi is a current member of the SMU Board of Trustees, and Ehlert is a past member.

In fact, it was while both were serving on the board that the baseball rivalry began.

“Early on in my time on the SMU Board of Trustees, I was getting to know everyone and I met John,” explained Salvi.

“I asked him what he did, and he told me he owned the Kansas City T-Bones. I offered to buy his team, but he said, ‘No way — this is too much fun.’ He also said that there was a franchise for sale in Gary, Ind., and that got the ball rolling.”

Salvi knew plenty about the RailCats.

He’d driven past the team’s stadium, The Steel Yard, numerous times while commuting between his home in Lake Forest, Ill., to Notre Dame Law School (his graduate alma mater and where he

currently serves as an adjunct professor) in South Bend, Ind. After five months of negotiations, he joined Ehlert as a Northern League owner.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” said Ehlert of owning a minor league baseball team.

“People always ask me, ‘What would ever prompt you to own a baseball team?’

And my answer is pretty simple: I flunked retirement. I needed something to do.”

Both the T-Bones and the RailCats have experienced their fair share of success over the past several years — sometimes at the expense of each other.

The RailCats have been in the Northern League Championship Series each of the last five years — winning in both 2005 and 2007 — while the TBones were league champions in 2008, edging out Salvi’s squad.

“When our teams are on the field, it’s absolutely cutthroat,” said Salvi with a laugh. “Both John and I are competitive people who want to win. There’s plenty of banter back and forth when our teams go against each other, but it’s all in good fun.”

“It’s a fun rivalry,” added Ehlert.

“Both of us want to win, but if the TBones can’t win, I’d want the RailCats to win.”

Ehlert may say that now, but when the two teams squared off in the 2008 Northern League Championship Series, Ehlert pulled out all the stops in hopes of getting his Kansas City squad the title.

Having already lost Game 1 of the five-game series, and trailing 7-1 early in Game 2, Ehlert did the unthinkable — he announced over the public address system

that, in honor of his golfing hole-in-one recorded earlier in the day, he was buying everyone in the stadium a drink.

Sure enough, once Ehlert’s announcement was made, the T-Bones rallied for a 9-8 Game 2 win and completed the title run with wins in Games 3 and 4.

“That series sums up our rivalry,” Salvi said. “I was in the owner’s box with John … and I was trying not to gloat too much when John offered to buy everyone in the stadium a drink — as any good golfer would after recording a hole-inone.

“Who would have guessed it would have had the effect that it did?”

Ehlert doesn’t remember how much that round of drinks cost, adding, “And I don’t care.” He said, “The best part of (the T-Bones/RailCats) rivalry is that we beat them in 2008. I never thought (buying the round of drinks) would swing the momentum the way it did — not only did we not lose after that, we never trailed, either. I just thought it was the right thing to do at the time.”

Salvi gained a bit of revenge this past season, beating the T-Bones 3-2 in the league championship semifinals, before falling to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 3-1 in the championship.

“I have always been a sports fan — White Sox, Bears, Notre Dame football — but being an owner brings that to a whole different level,” said Salvi. “And being able to add that friendly rivalry with John into the mix just makes it that much more enjoyable.”≠ SPRING 2010

Sports Hall of Fame 2010 Inductees TEISHA (SMITH ’00) DEVINE Fastpitch Softball Teisha (Smith ’00) Devine was a four-year letterwinner who was instrumental in guiding the Saint Mary’s University fastpitch softball team to its first-ever NCAA Division III National Championship in 2000. A three-time All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection, Devine led the Cardinals to three straight MIAC regular-season titles in 1997, 1998 and 1999. She was named to the NFCA All-Region Team three times — a first-team selection in 1998 and a second-team pick in 1999 and 2000. A two-time team captain and member of the NCAA Regional and National All-Tournament teams, Devine ranks first in school history in earned-run-average (1.04), while ranking second in career wins (58), third in complete games (35) and shutouts (18) and fifth in strikeouts (215).

She also holds the single-season school records for complete games (15) and shutouts (8) and is second in wins (21), appearances (28) and games started (24). During the Cardinals’ run to the 2000 national championship, Devine went 21-2 and won her last 18 starts — including a perfect 7-0 mark during SMU’s seven post-season games.

JOHN TSCHIDA ’90 Fastpitch Softball Coach John Tschida ’90 spent six years as the Cardinals’ head fastpitch coach, guiding SMU to post-season appearances in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000. His Cardinals won backto-back-to-back Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference crowns in 1997, 1998 and 1999, and his 2000 SMU team became the first in school history to capture the NCAA Division III national title. Following the 2000 season, John accepted the head coaching position at the University of St. Thomas, where he coached the Tommies to back-to-back national championships in 2004 and 2005. With his UST national crown in 2004, Tschida became the first fastpitch coach to win NCAA titles at two different schools.

A 1990 graduate of SMU — where he was a four-year letterwinner for the Cardinal baseball team — Tschida is the winningest Division III coach, active or retired, boasting a 573-98 record and an .854 winning percentage. Tschida has been named MIAC Coach of the Year in eight of his 15 years at the helm at SMU and UST. His teams have been nationally ranked each year, and in the last 13 seasons have posted a 273-13 record in conference regular-season play. In nine seasons at St. Thomas, his teams have swept 91 conference twinbills, split seven and were swept just once, and in all games vs. conference opponents are 208-9 (.958).

GEORGE HODER ’67 Basketball A four-year letterwinner, George Hoder ’67 is one of just 24 players in the program’s history to eclipse the 1,000-point barrier, having netted 1,260 points during his career. Hoder also ranked 10th in program history in free throws attempted (408) and rebounds (536). Hoder averaged a career-best 14.4 ppg during his junior season, when he tossed in 124 field goals on 297 attempts, while also shooting 64 percent from the free throw line (111-for-171).

1957 Brother Richard Geimer, Kansas City, Mo., completed 25 years at Archbishop O’Hara High School. He was employed from 1969 to 1975 and 1991 to 2010. He has taught in the fields of mathematics and science.

Charlie Marron, Hinsdale, Ill., wrote that several members of the class of 1957 celebrated the end of the decade by getting together to break bread. The group included Don Chopp, Joe Benigni, Tom Knaus, Ben Affetto, Bob Scurio, Mike Guistolise, Mike Guzaldo, Charlie Marron, and Fred Coco.

1960 Robert Gadams, Spring Hill, Tenn., is retired. He lost his wife, Lori, in 2002; together they had six children. After

1962 Jerome Hass, Lansing, N.Y., received professor emeritus status but will continue as professor of finance and Krause Faculty Fellow in Real Estate at the Johnson School, where he has taught for the past 42 years.

1963 Dr. Lee Van Horn, Bellingham, Wash., was appointed chair of the Advisory Council of the School of Fine and Performing Arts at Western Washington University.

1964 Bruno Contreras, Tallahassee, Fla., retired from the State of Florida in April 2009, after 21 years. He was a computer analyst/network support person for PC users for the Department of Corrections at Jefferson Correctional Institution. He has enjoyed visiting his daughter Laurie and son-in-law David, volunteering, taking walks and caring for his two dogs.

John Polka, Oak Park, Ill., celebrated his career as Fenwick High School’s cross country Coach on Aug. 13. More than 60 alums spanning more than three generations gathered to celebrate the stories of his career. Though he has retired from coaching, he currently serves on the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Board for Cross Country and Track and is an official starter for the IHSA. Charles Steib, Chesterfield, Mo., a principal with the law firm of Bini, Steib & Kohn, P.C., has been elected president of the Big Game Hunters Club in St. Louis.

Saint Mary’s alums held the first Tau Kappa Epsilon reunion Sept. 26, 2009, in Busse Woods in Elk Grove Village, Ill. Sixty-six TKE Brothers attended from California, Georgia, Connecticut, Colorado, Montana, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota. The group spanned graduation years of 1972 to 1980. With guests, more than 100 were in attendance.

Tau Kappa Epsilon is the world’s largest college social fraternity with 274 active chapters and more than 250,000 members. It was founded on Jan. 10, 1899, at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill. The Omicron Beta Chapter was founded at Saint Mary’s College on Jan. 6, 1971, as a colony. Four of the nine founders of the SMC chapter were in attendance including Jim Kreger ’72, Bruce Linde ’72, Gary Spengel ’72 and Greg Stangarone ’72. Organizers hope to make the reunion an annual tradition.

1967 Mike Accurso, Eagan, Minn., started a new business, The Entrepreneur’s Source. The company assists others who are seeking franchise ownership.

Dr. Louis Coloia, Palm Springs, Calif., retired after a long and rewarding career in non-profit management.

Pat Frawley, Pleasanton, Calif., retired in February 2009. He and his wife, Sandy, will start enjoying retirement as soon as their 17-year-old son is off to college.

Dr. Eduardo Quiroga, Kirkland, Quebec, Canada, has been conducting program evaluation assignments under the United Nations Development Programs framework in Liberia, Afghanistan, Sudan, Iraq and other countries in the process of economic recovery. He is currently working on a carbon sequestration issue and problems in Senegal under the Global Environmental Facility operations.

1968 Greg Cahill, Oak Lawn, Ill., is co-founder of a nationally/internationally touring and recording bluegrass band that is celebrating the 35th anniversary of its formation in Chicago this year.

Catching up with Stan Pollock One of the first things you notice about sociology professor emeritus Stan Pollock, Ph.D., is his sense of humor.

His Christmas letter talks about visiting the in-laws and outlaws; about getting lost, despite following the car’s GPS unit; and about one of his sons graduating from college.

“Those credentials should grant him an entry-level position in virtually any McDonald’s in the Twin Cities and, God willing, maybe beyond,” he teased.

The next thing you notice is how active Pollock, 67, is. He talks about biking 1,500-2,000 miles a year, doing daily yoga and meditation exercises, heading off to the local Frozen Film Festival and going for regular walks.

In time, your eyes may drift to the top of his head, where scars remain from two brain surgeries, or to his neck where a portion of his throat was removed due to cancer. Or you may notice that Pollock doesn’t partake in meals. His nutrition, for the past 5 years, has come from a liquid supplement in his feeding tube.

Pollock has been through a lot since 1996, when cancer at the base of his tongue forced the Severin Award winner to cut short his teaching career.

Back then, he was given four months to live if he didn’t seek treatment immediately. He had surgery to remove a large portion of his throat in New York, and followed up with heavy doses of radiation at the Mayo Clinic. By 2005, he had to have a feeding tube installed.

Then, in 2006, he underwent brain surgery … the first time.

“In 1997, they spotted a cyst in my brain and said, ‘It might not grow, or it might. We’ll just watch it,” he said. “Nine years later, it had grown, and that was an emergency surgery. They almost operated on me in the ambulance, I swear. That brain surgeon said (and you have to watch out when brain surgeons say, ‘I think’), ‘I think we got it all.’ ” But the cyst grew back in October 2009, and Pollock underwent the same surgery, a craniotomy resection of colloid cyst, which was blocking the third ventricle.

His doctor at Mayo only does three or four of these surgeries a year and had never heard of one being done twice.

Pollock’s wife Les, said, “Why don’t you have normal medical problems like

heart attacks?” Pollock told her, “I dunno.

I’m pretty tired of being a statistical outlier myself.”

He simply says, “You play the cards that are dealt to you.”

Pollock believes it’s his stubbornness and determination — along with a lot of prayers and well wishes — that have gotten him through. Some have said there must be a bigger plan for him. “I would prefer to think that but I think that’s petty presumptuous on my part. I hope He does.”

Prior to his latest surgery, Pollock worked with Greg Moser of Rock Solid Youth Center in Winona and the Mayo Clinic to show youth in trouble that there are consequences to their actions. Pollock, who smoked in his earlier years, tells them, “Be careful what you put in your mouth, all that tobacco and marijuana and alcohol.”

“The feeding tube is always a very dramatic show-and-tell for young people,” he said. “To them, it’s inconceivable that you wouldn’t have pizza and Coke anytime you want. And all of the surgery and radiation on my neck did do quite a bit of damage to my sterling good looks, and that makes an impression on students, particularly girls.”

It’s Pollock’s way of still reaching out to young people. He regrets not being able to teach. “Right down to my soul – I miss teaching,” he said. “Some of my students from years ago ended up very close friends of mine. I’m almost like a proud father.

“I grew up at Saint Mary’s. My students always taught me and certainly my colleagues. It just holds a special, special place in my heart.”

Patrick Salvi, Lake Forest, Ill., was appointed to a three-year term as chairman on the Character and Fitness, Second District Committee of the Illinois Board of Admissions to the Bar. He is also an adjunct professor at the University of Notre Dame Law School.

Rick Shanahan, Chicago, is teaching kindergarten at Bell School. He has been teaching within the Chicago Public Schools for 36 years.

Kilbride named Judge of the Year The Illinois Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) has named Illinois Supreme Court Justice Thomas L. Kilbride ’78 Judge of the Year. Alum’s photos bring Alcatraz to life Anthony Calabrese’s ’74 photographs bring to life the tragic and touching stories behind the prison gates of our country’s most infamous prison.

Calabrese’s photographs were published in a book written by David Ward titled “Alcatraz, The Gangster Years” in 2009 — a book that highlights the men, staff and inmates whose lives were forever changed by the experience of Alcatraz. Calabrese, retired from the Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Rochester, spent several years while in graduate school at the University of Minnesota working on a federally funded follow-up study of Alcatraz Penitentiary. His project duties included interviewing former inmates and staff of the island prison, and his evocative photos allow the reader to gain further understanding of how impacting the prison truly was.

“Sitting down one-on-one with former inmates and staff members for many hours of taped interviews was a very poignant experience for me,” Calabrese commented to the Bluff Country Reader. “These were older men reflecting on their lives, life choices, and the ramifications of those choices. I felt that many saw the interviews as an opportunity to contribute to setting the record straight on what the Alcatraz experience was all about.”

He added, “The project also allowed me an opportunity to become familiar with the current United States Federal Bureau of Prisons, an agency which subsequently provided me the privilege of a fulfilling career in public service.”≠

Joe Eckel ’74 and Jan Janssen ’74 celebrated Octoberfest in Munich, Germany in 2008. Eckel visited Janssen at his home in Amsterdam and the two traveled to Germany for some sightseeing and relaxing.

The two, who played hockey together at Saint Mary’s, had not seen each other for 30 years and say the next reunion won’t take nearly as long. Janssen says “Hi” to all his 1974 classmates.

Noel Abraham, Elk Grove Village, Ill., is the elementary school social worker at Stevenson Elementary School.

She volunteers at Catholic churches in the northwest suburbs of Chicago doing young adult ministry.

Celebrating William Hedrick A group of 1981 Saint Mary’s alumni are keeping the memory of their classmate Bill Hedrick alive. Hedrick died in 1982 in a car accident. His classmates are raising funds to endow a scholarship in his name. During the past year, Charlie Campbell, ceramics instructor in SMU’s Art and Design Department, and SMU ceramics students made over a dozen pots imprinted with the initials WLH as donor gifts from the William L. Hedrick Scholarship Fund.

Rod Ives, a classmate and close friend of Hedrick’s, offered cuttings from Hedrick’s legacy plant to those who have donated at least $500 to the scholarship fund. Alums serve as Reading Corps tutors Five alumni of Saint Mary’s are currently serving as Minnesota Reading Corps literacy tutors in schools across the state: Kristi Jo Sanders ’02, M’06, C’07 (pictured), Marybeth Kasperski C’07, Bethany Bergsgaard ’06, Sarah Warren M’02 and Lara Olsen M’03.

Minnesota Reading Corps is a statewide initiative to help every Minnesota child become a successful reader.

The program matches trained AmeriCorps members and community volunteers with children age 3 to third grade who are at risk for not reading at grade level. Members receive extensive training and are equipped with effective literacy instruction methods. Reading Corps members commit to a year of service that begins in August.

“Minnesota Reading Corps has been a valuable asset to my site, Lincoln K-8 Choice in Rochester,” Sanders said. “It allows me to work in a one-on-one setting using research-based reading interventions with children in kindergarten through third grade who are just below grade level. To me, serving in the MRC has been a wonderful experience. Benefactor, alum William Hendrickson dies William Hendrickson, 91, a 1939 Saint Mary’s University alumnus and founder of its Hendrickson Institute for Ethical Leadership, died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, in Naples, Fla. Hendrickson was a native of Plainview, Minn., and director, chair and chairman emeritus of St. Jude Medical Inc. of St. Paul. He often said he was fortunate to work with and observe ethical leaders who recognized the importance of developing other leaders with high moral standards. He also observed the erosion of ethical leadership of some leaders in positions of authority. His desire to help reverse this trend led to his establishing scholarships, a speaker series founded on ethics, the Hendrickson Institute for Ethical Leadership at Saint Mary’s University, and the Hendrickson Institute for Ethical Leadership Forum.

“Bill Hendrickson said on more than one occasion that his objective was to do nothing less than change the world,” said Brother William, President. “His generosity and vision touched the lives of hundreds of students through scholarship programs based upon good character.

These students have gone on to become the change that Bill wanted to see in the world.”

In 1988, Bill and his wife, Jean, invited Saint Mary’s to partner with them to identify, encourage, nurture and develop creative, ethical and globally oriented leaders. The Hendricksons funded the first of Saint Mary’s Tomorrow’s Leaders Scholarships. These scholarships provide assistance to students who commit to a lifestyle of ethical behavior and good character. Tomorrow’s Leaders Scholars have provided society with well-rounded ethical leaders and, as graduates of Saint Mary’s, they are committed to playing a constructive role in creating an ethical society.

In 1994, the Hendricksons expanded their university scholarship program and established the Hendrickson Institute for Ethical Leadership at Saint Mary’s Winona campus. Over the years, the Institute has provided a variety of programming and training on ethical leadership, serving for-profit and non-profit organizations.

Bill and Jean Hendrickson furthered their commitment in 2003. Recognizing the need to nurture the development of young people of good character, they established the Tomorrow’s Leaders High School Scholarship Program. The scholarships provide incentives for Midwestern high school students to complete leadership and service projects within their schools and communities.

In 2007, the Hendrickson Institute was moved from Saint Mary’s Winona campus to its Twin Cities campus in order to expand programming to the Twin Cities community. Saint Mary’s University and the Hendrickson Institute established an annual speaker series, the Hendrickson Institute for Ethical Leadership Forum, and an annual award for ethical leadership.≠

Remembering longtime Saint Mary’s supporter Oscar Straub Longtime Saint Mary’s University trustee emeritus, benefactor, and alum Oscar Straub ’52 died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010.

Straub, 78, retired as coowner and president of Motor Carrier Insurors of St. Louis and served on the Saint Mary’s Board of Trustees from 1988-1998 and again from 1999-2009. He was named a trustee emeritus in 2009. He also served as a board member of Metro Banks of St. Louis.

The clock tower and courtyard on the Winona campus was a gift of Oscar Straub and his wife, Mary Jane (Nystrom CST ’52). Oscar also received the 1997 Alumni Appreciation Award from Saint Mary’s. The award recognized his continuing dedication to the mission and to alumni and current students of the university. The Straubs frequently hosted a liturgy and dinner in St. Louis for Saint Mary’s alumni, prospective students, parents and friends.

“Oscar was a tireless promoter of Saint Mary’s,” said Tony Piscitiello ’69, M’82, vice president for admission. “He devoted many hours to the university and truly cared about our students, faculty and staff. And he and Mary Jane were gracious hosts to students and alumni on many occasions when they shared their beautiful home with SMU. His love for Saint Mary's was very evident. He will be missed.”≠

Fagan remembered for inspiring athletes Brother Robert Fagan, 63, died on Jan. 13, 2010, at Riverview Hospital in Red Bank, N.J. Brother Robert worked at Saint Mary’s athletic department from 1987-1990 before becoming an athletic trainer at the Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, N.J. from 1990 until the time of his death.

“I can remember him standing next to me the whole time I was on the exercise bike with his arms crossed, never letting me slow down — pushing me to be all that I could,” said Kris Patzner-Sprangers ’93. “He was an inspiration to me and allowed me to live my dream of playing basketball and not feeling awkward for having a disability of motion.”≠

Saint Mary’s says goodbye to Jerrie Seibert Jerrie Seibert was called the calm in a storm — the man known to keep a level head, and to have a calming effect, even in the midst of chaos.

He was frequently referred to as “The Voice” — the man whose familiar deep, commanding words came across voicemail forewarning SMU’s Winona campus about snow emergencies.

And he was famous for cracking jokes without so much as cracking a smile.

But as the Winona community came together on the Saint Mary’s campus Jan. 18, 2010 to remember his life and mourn his death, there was another reoccurring theme.

Seibert was described as a caregiver — a man who loved his family, the town he served for 32 years, and the Saint Mary’s campus he protected as director of Campus Safety for 11 years.

During Seibert’s eulogy, Chris Kendall ’79, M’95, vice president for Student Development, said, “In time we will get over his death, but we will not get over his life, and that’s a gift.”

Seibert worked at the Winona Police Department from 1966 to 1997. Over a 32-year career, he held nearly every position in the department: detective, sergeant, lieutenant, assistant chief and finally deputy chief. In 1998, he came to Saint Mary’s and retired in spring 2009.

Though Seibert’s job entailed doling out parking violations, breaking up parties, and numerous security details, he also found time to graciously jump start students’ cars, give lessons in tie tying, and even give out relationship advice.

He died Jan. 12, 2010, at the age of 66. His wife, Linda, commented that the couple missed out on sharing their golden years together, that Jerrie’s retirement had been too short to fit in all the joys that retirement should bring. Rethinking her statement, Linda — who worked side-by-side in Campus Safety with Jerrie — expressed that, in reality, they enjoyed their golden years at Saint Mary’s.≠

One is that they’re all die-hard feminists.

The women laugh and shake their heads. A strong group of independent women, definitely. Feminists, not necessarily.

Another rumor is that they all want to become nuns.

In truth, at least one of them does; one day Amy Streit, a sophomore from Chicago, would like to become a Sister of Saint Francis or a Felician Sister.

But these 27 women each have vastly different educational and vocational pursuits.

Adjovi Amouzou is majoring in chemistry and wants to become an anesthesiologist; Mollie Bock is majoring in pastoral and youth ministry and would like to work with the elderly; Maria Pechacek is majoring in biochemistry and would like to become a pediatrician; Mary Lauermann is majoring in biology and is considering becoming a veterinarian; and Heather Jacobsen is a special education and elementary education major who would like to become a teacher. The list goes on.

Their backgrounds are varied as well.

From West Africa to Chicago, these women have come together with one similar goal — to enhance their leadership skills. They are Muslim, Buddhist, Jewish and Christian.

“It doesn’t matter what your race or religion is, the Institute is a mix of all types of women, and it’s a great support system,” said Pechacek, a junior from Milwaukee, Wis. Their reasons for joining are also different.

“Coming in as freshmen, a lot of people don’t know anyone. Having a group of women to go to the caf with, and to hang out with is great,” said Jacobsen, a senior from the Twin Cities area.

Lauermann, a freshman from Holmen, Wis., joined because it was a great way to get to know people at the university. Also, her mother, a College of Saint Teresa alum, wanted her daughter to be instilled with the same Teresan values she has.

Amouzou, a junior from Minneapolis and originally from West Africa, said she knew the Institute would teach her how to be strong and think for herself. “It gives you a lot of confidence,” she said.

Bock, a senior from New Ulm, Minn., said, “I joined the institute to have a better opportunity to nourish my service and leadership skills through community. We’re a community of women who are all learning to grow with each other, and we’re interested in being involved in the campus community and the greater Winona community.”

The women are quick to point out activities the Institute has helped sponsor and organize including “1,001 Donuts,” an informal holiday gathering in Rochester and a tradition with the Franciscan Sisters.

Each year, they also host a Project COMPASS dance, where the women work

with developmentally challenged adults in Winona. For a couple of years, they worked with the local Brain Injury Support Walk. And many events throughout the year involve area youth in the community.

“The Real Me” brought Saint Teresa Institute members together with area middle-schoolers for a chocolate spa and chocolate facial masks — and more importantly a lesson in self-esteem.

“We taught the girls about looking beyond their outward beauty,” Pechacek said. “It was a great opportunity to share what I’ve learned with the girls.”

The women are grateful for the pioneering women of both Saint Mary’s University and the College of Saint Teresa, women who fought discrimination and paved the way for future women in leadership.

“We can all look up to those women,” Bock said.

“It’s important for young girls to see how powerful they are and that they don’t need a man to help them. I appreciate what (SMU’s first women and the women of CST) did. They inspire me to work hard,” Pechacek said, adding there’s still a

long way to go. “Women are still portrayed as sex objects, and we are so much more than that,” she said. “That’s why we’re educating girls that beauty is about more than what you see in the mirror.”≠ ABOVE: Twenty-seven diverse women comprise the Saint Teresa Institute.
