May 4, 2025 — Third Sunday of Easter
CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
BY ELIZABETH WIDLAK, STUDENT PARISHIONER
In October of 2021, as a freshman, I hesitantly signed up for the New Student Retreat at St. Mary. I went into the retreat hoping to make a friend or two, but instead found a community that quickly became my home. The friends I met during this retreat and in the weeks that followed have walked with me through some of the most transforma ve seasons of my life.
My sophomore year was marked by immense growth - spiritually, socially, physically, and emo onally. I was part of an accountability group where we journeyed together through a set of disciplines and prayers leading up to Easter called Magnify 90, were each blessed to study abroad in various programs , and individually ran marathons. To grow alongside women who supported and challenged me in every dimension of life was truly a gi .
Over the years, I’ve also been blessed to serve in many ways at St. Mary - as a peer ministry intern, office assistant, retreat leader, and undergraduate women’s group leader. Each role has had a uniquely beau ful set of blessings and challenges. I have learned that vulnerability is more im-
portant than perfec on. This is not natural to me as I tend to be guarded, but St. Mary has consistently offered me the space to show up as my most authen c self.
Above all, this community has drawn me closer to the Lord. My me at St. Mary has taught me how to pursue a deep, in mate rela onship with Christ. Some of my most treasured memories are from si ng at the front row in adoraon, surrounded by my closest friends praising the Lord for His goodness and His love. While not every season has been easy, each hardship has pushed me to grow. I have learned that God allows my heart to be broken to give it a greater capacity to love.
I will miss this community deeply, but I leave feeling equipped to go out into the world. I have learned the skills to be a bold Catholic witness wherever I go. St. Mary has shown me what it means to live a life rooted in faith, service, and authen c friendship. Thank you to everyone who has supported my me here, through your prayers, financial contribu ons, and parish fellowship.

All Women of the Parish are Warmly Invited to our next mee ng on Thursday, May 8.
This year’s Women of the Heart theme will reflect on the gi of WISDOM. Recognizing that the Book of Wisdom ascribes the feminine pronoun to wisdom and acknowledging the vast and diverse wisdom that exists among the Women of the Heart members we decided on this theme.
Women of the Heart will meet on the second Thursday of the month from September through May from 10:15 am to noon in Donnelly Hall.

We encourage you to support our immigrant community at St. Mary! Contact Amy Prociuk (amyprociuk@gmail.com) or Rosa Luz Pos go (rpos go@smspnewman.org) to get involved. We also invite you to join us for our bilingual rosary every Sunday at 1:15 pm in the Church.
The Michigan Catholic Conference recently released an edi on of its Focus magazine that shares the Church’s perspec ve on immigra on, featuring the stories of immigrants who have traveled to Michigan and explaining why and how the Church serves migrants.
Pick up a printed copy in English or Spanish at the parish or read the edi on online here:

It can be hard to feel hope and peace in a world that o en seems chao c and dark. But our risen Lord – the one who conquered chaos – assures us there is more.
A deeper faith, a fuller life – it’s what many people seek when they inquire about joining the Church, or comple ng the sacraments. They’re not always sure what to expect, but they are open to beginning their faith journey through the OCIA (Order of Chris an Ini a on of Adults). As we open ourselves to God’s nudges – then take those steps to learn and grow together, we discover that God always provides so much more than we ever dreamed.
Perhaps one of our newest members of the Church says it best:
“If you would have asked me two years ago what I thought about becoming Catholic, I would’ve told you I just didn’t think it ma ered all that much. It had indeed been something that I had thought about, but almost always with the resolu on that the Catholic Church was not who She claimed to be and that I didn’t need to convert. But what started as a point of skep cism and debate with many of my Catholic friends, eventually evolved into a longing for full communion with the Church.
Over the past nine months, I have had the incredible blessing of walking through the OCIA process with about 30 others. I write this on the evening of Holy Thursday, and my heart bursts for the opportunity to come before the Lord in the Eucharist and receive Him there with all of you. I cannot help but think about the way that He has run a er me, and so many others, to bring us to this point.” Chip Peterson, Class of 2025
For those seeking to be part of the Church, our weekly gatherings of our OCIA group will begin again in September. Please consider OCIA if:
You’re an adult who has never been bap zed
You were bap zed in another faith and would like to become Catholic
You were bap zed Catholic, but never confirmed
Feel free to contact us and talk. We’d love to help you discover if God is calling you to “more.”
