March 24, 2024— Palm Sunday Of the Passion of the Lord

March 24, 2024— Palm Sunday Of the Passion of the Lord
CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
As we enter into this holiest week of our liturgical year, much might seem quite familiar from the palm branches to the washing of each other’s feet, from the venera on of the cross to the candles we hold in vigil. These Holy Week tradions, while all very rich in meaning, can become somewhat rou ne as we go through them year a er year, so their significance can be easily lost on us. Such was my own experience of Holy Week un l I did my first 30-day retreat of the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Igna us Loyola as a Jesuit novice back in January 2010, at Eastern Point Retreat House in Gloucester, Massachuse s.
Pope Francis’ Lenten theme for 2024, “Through the desert God leads us to freedom,” provides a fi ng summary of the purpose of the Spiritual Exercises, which are meant to free the retreatant from the disordered a achments that keep the retreatant from following God. The Spiritual Exercises are divided into four “weeks,” which do not correspond to actual periods of seven days, but rather mark dis nct stages in this Igna an retreat experience. In the first week, the retreatant experiences what it means to a sinner loved by God. In the second week, the retreatant follows Christ in His earthly ministry to be er know, love, and serve Him.
In many respects, these first two weeks of the Spiritual Exercises correspond to our Lenten journey, where we first confront our own sinfulness and receive God’s mercy and love through the sacrament of reconcilia on. Then, we are sent forth to be er follow Christ through our deepened prayer and our compassionate service to our neighbor. Through our Lenten prac ces of prayer, fas ng, and almsgiving, we grow closer to Our Lord, we come to know Him more in mately, as we set aside our own selfish cares and desires to focus our minds and hearts on the One who is the source of our life and our love.
It is in this spirit that we are called to enter into this Holy Week, we are called to walk with Our Lord as He faces His Passion and death, not as with some distant historical figure in an ancient text, nor as with some inaccessible hero in a storybook, but as we would with a dear loved one who is about to face immense suffering and who calls us to remain by His side
through it all. In the third week of the Spiritual Exercises, we are told to pray for the grace of, “sorrow, compassion, and shame for the Lord is going to His suffering for my sins.” We are to not only recall the events of the Passion, but to experience the events of the Passion with Our Lord.
When I first experienced the third week of the Spiritual Exercises as a Jesuit novice, I found myself moved to tears as Our Lord’s Passion became much more real to me. It is only by moving from head to heart that we can truly appreciate the sacrifice Our Lord made because of His uncondi onal love for each of us. It is only by moving from head to heart that we can truly experience the joy of the fourth week of the Spiritual Exercises, when we encounter the Risen Lord in His glory. May we each find the courage to accompany Our Lord through this Holy Week, so that we might live with Him in the fullness of joy of the Easter Season.
Have a blessed Holy Week and joyous Easter!

“One cannot know the Lord without this habit of adoring, of adoring in silence. I believe, if I am not mistaken, this prayer of adora on is the prayer least known by us, it is the one we do the least”, as if it were a “waste of me before the Lord, before the mystery of Jesus Christ”.
Instead, we should rediscover “the silence of Adora on: he is the Lord and I adore him."-

We had wonderful participation at our Lenten talk on “Thinking Like Ignatius.” Many people asked if we could present another talk focusing on discernment and making good decisions. We’ll work on it!
In the meantime, here are some good resources and articles that focus on the practice of Ignatian discernment. And don’t forget to keep spending time in silence with God, and with the Examen Prayer.
