FROM THE PRESIDENT

Community Matters It’s easy for me to peg my favorite St. Mary’s memory for the 2022–2023 school year: Homecoming week. Really, it was the high point for me because it exemplified a concept I value above all others: community.

During the week leading up to the eponymous dance, middle school kids and high school kids engaged in silly competitions for small prizes—and they had a ball. They showed their school pride on Friday of that week, decked out in blue, chanting and cheering, “SMS! SMS! SMS!” in anticipation of the big game that night.

The evening tailgate was a huge hit, with hundreds of Crusaders, both young and old, enjoying catch-up conversations with true friends, good food and music, and old-fashioned competition. Twenty-six two-person teams participated in our inaugural cornhole tournament. Some paired with peers, some with siblings, and we even had quite a few mother/son and father/daughter combos, including the winning team.

At gametime our football team took the field through a human tunnel composed of hundreds of students, all decked out in neon colors, and then beat Brookings-Harbor for another SMS victory. By all accounts, the dance at Southern Oregon University the following night was a smashing success, too!

Make no mistake: community matters.

We are fortunate to live in a beautiful valley full of natural wonders and lovely sunsets, but what makes any place special is the community—the people who live there. St. Mary’s community is special because of our people.

I encourage you to flip through these pages and take note of all the names listed herein. You’re likely to recognize many of them and just as likely to consider them neighbors or friends. Some may even be family. Our generous community of donors is integral to the school’s fabric, integral to our success.

You too are quite likely on the list.

I can’t imagine this valley without you, and I suspect you can’t imagine this valley without St. Mary’s School. The work we do in educating the next generation to be critical thinkers and compassionate doers, integrating what they learn with how they live, is of the utmost importance. And we couldn’t do it without you.

As has become something of a tradition, we use this publication to highlight some of our brightest young graduates—all of whom are headed off to the next stage on their academic journey. Take note of how our graduates identified the importance of this community in their development.

• Perhaps most powerfully, Tymofii Sybirtsev, matriculating to the University of Portland, talked about leaving his community in war-torn Ukraine only to find family at St. Mary’s.

The St. Mary’s community fostered these young scholars, encouraged their nascent interests, and supported them during their time here. Our community will continue to be theirs, and with each year it will only grow. I very much look forward to following their success in college and beyond.

Coxswain, rigging, gunwales, and skeg are terms that might remind most of us of naval officers shouting orders from a ship’s bridge or perhaps of flotillas of Tudor-era royal standard-bearers gliding serenely down the River Thames. But to Maren Chamberland, this specialized language is part of her everyday vocabulary, having become second-nature during the four years she has rowed competitively.

Maren’s impressive list of athletic accomplishments has garnered her national attention from multiple Division I schools, including Cornell University, where she matriculates this fall. But the journey from novice rower to regatta champion has not been an easy one, especially growing up in a region of the country that, in Maren’s words, is seemingly “always in a drought.” The story of how she was able to achieve such elite levels of athleticism in spite of these geographic limitations can be attributed not only to her own grit and resilience but also to the flexibility afforded by the St. Mary’s mod system.

Upon entering St. Mary’s as a 6th grader, Maren was forced to quickly adapt to the radically increased level of academic expectations relative to her previous schooling experience.

“Everything I did at St. Mary’s couldn’t really even compare to what I was doing in elementary school,” she says, adding that one of her first major life lessons was “figuring out how to take [herself] seriously.” Luckily, she had mentors to guide her through this transformation, including her 7th grade English teacher, Gina Higgins, whom she credits with not only challenging her academically but also recognizing the value in her extracurricular pursuits.

By the 8th grade, these pursuits included rowing. That spring Maren placed first in the Women’s U17 Quad at USRowing Northwest Regionals. It was clear that she had talent, but then an unexpected obstacle struck: the COVID-19 pandemic essentially shut down local rowing clubs for the entirety of her freshman year, which caused her team to shrink significantly in the years following. The situation seemed grim.

Then opportunity knocked. While attending the Youth Club National Regatta in the summer of 2021, Maren spoke with the director of the elite Sarasota Crew program in Florida. He invited her to join them for a spring season—an enticing opportunity but one that would require her to miss a significant amount of school.

At an institution with a more conventional schedule, this likely would have been impossible.

But because of St. Mary’s mod system, Maren was able to frontload most of her credits so that by early spring of her junior year, she had only a couple requirements remaining: one mod 6

Her teachers all expressed faith that, given Maren’s academic track record, she would be able to successfully complete these tasks remotely. They gave the plan their blessing, and she was off— headed to the highly competitive Southeast to test her mettle while finishing the St. Mary’s curriculum from afar.

The move paid off in spades. Maren placed first in the Women’s U19 1x at the Florida Scholastic Racing Association Sculling Championships, becoming the state champion of a state that, at that point, she had lived in for only two weeks. Even more importantly, she showed college recruiters that she was truly serious about rowing—serious enough that she was willing to move across the country for it.

While in Florida, Maren went on a number of official college visits, including to Cornell, which immediately felt like home. The setting reminded her of the Rogue Valley: “surrounded by gorgeous hills everywhere.” And the academic reminded her of St. Mary’s.

“Cornell really advocates for combining a lot of different disciplines and areas of study,” she says, “so I knew it was a place where I wouldn’t be

confined to one strict path, studying one subject.”

Setting her own path is a concept that Maren is already quite familiar with due to the mod system, and she is grateful to have found a college that embraces that same ethic.

For now Maren’s tentative plan is to study chemistry with a minor in environmental science. She has not yet decided on a career, but broadly she knows that she is interested in the technological possibilities that lie at the intersections of various scientific fields.

She would love to “one day be part of something that is revolutionary worldwide and could help fix the climate crisis,” and she is intrigued by concepts such as biomimetics and bioremediation—both of which offer the possibility of harnessing elements of the natural world to forge innovative solutions to human-created problems.

She has taken to heart the advice offered by one high school teacher during a conversation the two had recently: “The people who are most successful are the ones who want to know more about what they don’t know.” Maren is one of those people, and she strives to never stop learning, no matter what’s around the river bend.

This fall Sidney DeBoer will embark on her freshman year at Loyola Marymount University (LMU), where she hopes to study history, poly-sci, or business, as well as run sprints for the track team (and perhaps compete in the triple and long jumps).

A West Coast kid since birth, Sidney was always interested in California colleges, but choosing LMU was actually a matter of luck.

The summer before her senior year, Sidney and her father, Mark DeBoer, visited many California schools from north to south: the University of California, Berkeley, as well as Stanford, Pepperdine, and Chapman, to name but a few. LMU, however, was not even on Sidney’s radar much less on their well-considered and long-planned itinerary. A few spare hours prompted her father to ask Sidney if she wanted to pop by LMU, saying, “Let’s just check it out. It can’t hurt.” Sidney says the moment they drove onto campus and looked out over the ocean vistas, the Los Angeles skyline, and the Hollywood sign—all visible from campus, she became quite interested. She took the school tour, learned more about the school’s programs, and spoke with the track coaches; by then she was hooked.

Interestingly enough, many of Sidney’s talents and interests developed in much the same fashion: seeing something that interested her and trying it out. Take for example her passion for equestrian. On a family trip to Hawaii when she was just four years old, she begged her parents to go trail riding. Although the stable rules clearly indicated that she was far too young and too small to do so, her parents convinced the owners to allow her to ride. She quickly became fascinated and fearless around horses. Within two years, she was competing on horseback (also below the age usually allowed by the rules). She’s been riding ever since, currently show jumping at the meter 10 division, with her beloved Cadell, who is stabled in Talent.

Her talent on the track also developed at a very young age and from simple beginnings.

She distinctly remembers “always beating the boys” at recess footraces at Sacred Heart Elementary. She indicates that these casual contests elevated her confidence and convinced her to pursue the sport seriously. In spring 2023, Sidney earned her second straight Athlete of the Meet award at the Track & Field State Championship in Eugene. Her exploits at Hayward Field this year were remarkable: she took home four medals, including the gold for the triple jump, silvers for the 200 meter and the long jump, and a bronze for the 100 meter.

Ultimately, however, Sidney’s greatest strength is her talent in the classroom. Since her days at Sacred Heart, she has always been driven and successful. She transferred to St. Mary’s in 7th grade, and although the academic transition was challenging at first, she soon settled in, finding great study buddies in old friends from Sacred Heart, Maren Chamberland and Karsen Kadien.

Since then she has thrived, ultimately graduating second in the Class of 2023.

Sidney has a talent for history, which was largely developed through her classes with Vincent Comerchero. She says she appreciated how organized and prepared “Comes” was, his thorough notes and explanations, his broad understanding of the subject, and his commitment to teaching writing.

She laughs about their “Hey, girl!” inside joke and his “funky packets,” but she says she knew

she was always in good hands, precisely why she enrolled in multiple classes with Mr. Comerchero during her time at St. Mary’s.

She admits to some anxiety about leaving for college, mostly because she is so close to her family, including her younger brother. Her advice to Aiden, St. Mary’s Class of 2026, demonstrates how well prepared she is, however: “Appreciate every moment, even the classes you don’t really like. Don’t ever take these opportunities for granted because not everyone gets them. Think bigger picture!”

Clearly, Sidney has always had a talent for seeing the bigger picture, as she has discovered so many of her interests and considerable talents by simply being willing to look and willing to try.

Glance at her résumé and one would assume that Zyris Zacha is already a career scientist. From presenting research at multiple conferences to securing an internship with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), she has created opportunities to pursue her dreams. It’s no surprise that our students and faculty recognized Zyris as both Scholar of the Year and the recipient of our highest award, the Mother Marie Rose Award.

Zyris values authentic learning and community over résumé building—and it has paid off. She is a true scholar with a passion for understanding. Rather than doubling up on math, Zyris instead chose to slow down and restart at the beginning, Algebra 1, to ensure that her foundation was as strong as possible. Rather than pursue AP Science class tracks, she instead chose to take all the sciences. Rather than create a long list of school activities, she instead focused on a few, including co-founding the first chapter of WiSTEM (Women in STEM) in Oregon. Through it all, her talent for collaboration, her interest in lifting others up, and her passion for learning sparkled.

As a first-generation college student, Zyris says the support of her parents and family were paramount to her love of learning.

“Their goals were to give me as many opportunities as they could and to open as many doors as possible,” she says. “It was up to me which opportunities I took and which doors I pursued.”

The first door was a Waldorf education at Madrone Trail School, where Zyris developed “an appreciation for observing the world and approaching life with a creative mind-set.”

Her parents extended the art-centric curriculum by exposing her to science through museum trips, outdoor exploration, and at-home STEM activities. And then came the opportunity to attend St. Mary’s.

“St. Mary’s was life-changing in giving me the space and the opportunities to chase my dreams,” Zyris says. “Between the class offerings, extracurriculars, and staff support, St. Mary’s helped me gain confidence and begin to figure out what exactly I wanted out of life. The mod system was fundamental in allowing me to take two or even three science courses every year and discover what I am truly passionate about. The teachers’ encouragement solidified my love of learning and made me realize my capability in the fields I am pursuing.

“When I came to St. Mary’s in my freshman year, I was amazed by how many class offerings there were within science. While making my schedule, I decided that I wanted to try as many different types of science as I possibly could to see which ones were the most fun. I did not 10

necessarily foresee what my path at St. Mary’s would become; I simply tried new things until I discovered what I loved most.”

Zyris discovered this passion in the Astronomy Club.

There she was introduced to the Lunar and Planetary Institute’s ExMASS program, which selects just 10 schools in the country to work with a NASA scientist and compete in a research project. The St. Mary’s team won first place during Zyris’s sophomore year, with a project on Vestan asteroid geomorphology.

She gave a talk on her team’s behalf at the virtual collaborative conference between NASA and the European Space Agency, something she would continue to do at other conferences, as well as helped publish their research on NASA’s VestaTrek website.

She then applied to NASA’s STEM Enhancement in Earth Science summer internship program after hearing about it at a conference. In the summer before her senior year, Zyris worked at the University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Space Research as part of a national team mentored by a Johnson Space Center scientist. Her crew kept in contact after the internship, taking their work to several more conferences and designing an experiment proposal for a microgravity research project through NASA. In December 2022, a fraction of the interns were invited back to Austin to take part in the Great Lunar Expedition for Everyone program, where her team designed and built a LunaSat mission to analyze levitating lunar dust density. Their work will be sent into space next year as part of an international lunar research effort.

It was one of her fellow students at UT Austin who suggested that Zyris take a look at Stanford’s program in aerospace engineering, as it ranks among the best in the country.

“In all honesty, I hadn’t considered Stanford at all before that,” she says. “I actually didn’t even know it was on the West Coast. I decided it was worth a shot, and the worst they could say is no.”

Well, Stanford said yes. Zyris heads to California this fall with plans to major in aeronautics/astronautics or geology/planetary sciences.

“One of the most important lessons I’d like to pass on is that everyone should believe in their own capability to make something happen for themselves and take advantage of opportunities, regardless of challenges,” she says. “If at some point you fall short, it’s completely OK. It still holds immense value as a learning experience. I want other young women to never underestimate their capability, worth, and the space they deserve to take up. I want everyone to embrace how incredible the world is, how much is out there to learn and experience, and how exciting it is to explore. Ultimately, I believe that regardless of background, everyone should go for the opportunity, take chances, make mistakes, follow what you love, and give it everything you have because you never know where your passions might take you.”

St. Mary’s School has invested 157 years in educating students who reflect the grit and heart of our beautiful Rogue Valley. Class of 2023 graduate Katherine Mejia exemplifies the successful union of personal tenacity and academic opportunity in a manner that reflects the highest goals of educators and school supporters.

Kathy enrolled at St. Mary’s as a 9th grader after interviewing and being selected for the inaugural Kids Unlimited Academy–St. Mary’s Scholars program. Kids Unlimited Academy (KUA) is a local charter school established to provide educational opportunities to underserved students.

KUA Scholars are identified as high-achieving middle school students with the potential to thrive in St. Mary’s challenge-rich environment. Kathy was the first of only four students awarded admission through this program in 2019. When she donned her cap and gown to cross the stage to receive her diploma last May, Kathy fulfilled the potential that her teachers always knew she possessed.

With her family’s support and her own academic ambitions, Kathy excelled from day one in the classroom and as a member of the Crusaders Girls Basketball and Girls Tennis teams.

St. Mary’s teachers and teammates alike are inspired by her drive to succeed, and the upcoming generations of KUA–St. Mary’s Scholars can look to Kathy’s example while navigating academic responsibilities and co-curricular involvements.

When asked what advice she might share with younger students, Kathy reflects on her own persistence in working through difficulties rather than changing to an easier path.

“Put in the work early so you can see the results later,” Kathy suggests, just as she is about to enjoy the rewards of her many late-night study sessions and extra athletic practices. She takes pride in the academic accolades she has earned through diligently completing each assignment, equation, or tennis match and pushing her own limits as a scholar-athlete.

Kathy’s commitment to personal excellence was recognized her senior year with acceptances to multiple universities, honors colleges, and merit-based scholarship programs. With an eye toward a career in law, Kathy accepted an offer of admission to the prelaw track at Fordham University in New York, where she plans to use her prestigious Fordham Recognition Scholarship for National Merit award to complete a bachelor’s degree in international relations.

The daughter of Mexican immigrants, Kathy is proud to step into the future that her parents dreamed for her when they came to the United States. Part of her drive to succeed is her desire to honor the sacrifices her parents made in their own lives to ensure that she could have the 12

brightest possible future. When she hears her younger siblings talk about St. Mary’s and how they want to be like her, Kathy realizes that her choices may change the direction for her entire family.

While she can’t promise that the younger kids will love the advanced Chinese language classes as much as she did or that they will stop by the College Counseling Center to raid the candy dish at break, she does know that they will learn from caring teachers, take challenging classes, and find paths that lead toward their own dreams.

Her KUA family and her St. Mary’s family are all proud of Kathy and have no doubt that she will excel academically and build lifelong relationships at Fordham University. With her move to New York, Kathy is looking forward to using her experience at St. Mary’s as a compass to guide her toward future successes.

The local tradition of the Grad Walk, where high school seniors revisit their elementary schools in late May, brought home just how much Kathy has matured since her time at KUA. She was surprised by the colorful congratulations sign her younger siblings made in her honor, and she acknowledged how much her community of supporters has grown by leaving the familiar and trying something new.

Inspired by Frank Phillips’s cooking descriptor, I have imagined this bubbly young man as a pot au feu, or “pot on the fire.” Please come along with me as I reconstruct the first stages of Elliot’s educational life from testimonials that I gleaned from his teachers, guardians, and Elliot himself.

Preparation time is about 18 years from inception to co-valedictorian status to Oregon State University launch.

First, preheat St. Mary’s to the “mod system” setting from grades 5 through 12. While you are waiting to enroll Elliot, follow these next steps.

Blend two gifted industrial engineers, both graduates of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. Mom, Michele, a Mainer hailing from a clan of patent-owning Swedes, will work in manufacturing until procuring a STEM teaching position at St. Mary’s School.

Dad, Luke, a graduate of St. Mary’s School (Class of 1993), will also move on from creating patents and working in manufacturing to seek and earn an MBA in finance from Northeastern University. Luke’s ability to visualize numbers while solving complex math problems in his mind, along with his competitive nature, will contribute to Elliot’s zest.

In the prep stage, Luke and Michele provide Elliot with access to “inventing boxes” full of broken appliances that can be deconstructed (while making minor modifications for safety); they meet Elliot’s “thousand [technical] questions” with serious technical answers that express the world “as it is.” During long car rides, to pass the time the Zimmers season Elliot with math and physics challenges, always allowing for the feeling of joyful satisfaction as a puzzle is adequately solved. Until it is second nature for Elliot, Mom and Dad model the iterative process that is central to the field of engineering: create, test, and revise while building, refining, and improving.

Next, turn up the flame as Elliot is introduced into the 5th grade level of St. Mary’s School, dad’s alma mater and mom’s employer, where the learner can join his impish cohort of “happy and curious, bantering and merry, but always polite” learners who will accompany him through the next eight years of growth, a time when he will strive for his best effort, forgive his shortcomings, and develop lasting friendships in the Robotics Lab and on the golf links.

Elliot

Baste the curious learner with generous quantities of challenging core curriculum classes, enrichment courses, and extracurricular opportunities, such as robotics, digital art, and Chinese language learning.

(Of his effort to achieve mastery in Mandarin Chinese, Elliot, who has just returned from his first excursion to China, reports that spark-like moments of fluency remind him of how much he has achieved and inspire him to learn and practice more.)

As graduation nears, test Elliot’s growth by challenging him to articulate why his service mattered and how it impacted his sense of himself within the larger community. (Do not be surprised when Elliot argues convincingly that the United States is lagging behind competitor nations in the teaching of STEM and that he wants to inspire others to embrace the joy of problem solving through the iterative process.)

Mix in opportunities for Elliot to engage joyfully and with relish in many subjects, allowing him to seek true understanding while gazing deeply into each subject from multiple perspectives without preconceived ideas of what he will find. This unbridled curiosity will be the most indelible impression Elliot will bestow on his admiring teachers.

Garnish Elliot, now a proud twenty-first-century scholar, with praise when his First Tech Challenge robotics team, Quasar, earns a top 3% spot at the World Robotics Championships, winning both the Controllers Award and the admiration of their competitors for their diligent attempt to adapt to an unexpected change in the robot’s environment.

Leaven the educational process with a community service requirement, encouraging Elliot to tutor his peers who are struggling in math, to share the joy of Vex robotics in a summer league, and to mentor budding engineers in the FIRST Lego (robotics) League. (Of his time as a robotics mentor, Elliot will recall with fondness how he witnessed a middle schooler’s face light up as her robot executed its code as intended, speculating how this moment might undergird her future interest in problem solving and her approach to life in general.)

Heemir Patel is what some might call a modern-day Renaissance man—he’s a scholar (one of our Class of 2023 co-salutatorians), a leader, an athlete, a philosopher, an engineer at heart, a doer of good, and an all-around nice guy.

He’s the type of student you look forward to teaching each day and the type of person other students enjoy hanging around. Heemir is a friend to all. This, perhaps above all else, is the most important thing to know about Heemir Patel: relationships and community are what matter most to him.

Heemir came to St. Mary’s in 6th grade, following his sister, Krupa (Class of 2019). Heemir likes efficiency, and as he acclimated to St. Mary’s and our unique mod system, he began to appreciate that this system would allow him to maximize his interests. He says he doesn’t particularly like school, “I just want to get the job done.” So, the mod system is perfect for him, as he was able to take the courses he loved: math, science, engineering, material science, and computer science.

It also helped him gain an open mind and a desire to take classes he would not have considered before. Indeed, he loved his painting class with Betsy Moore and his social studies classes with Lauren Huizinga. But one of the classes he enjoyed the most was Introduction to Aviation.

“I enjoyed the intricacies in the aviation course,” he says. “It was a really fun class to take, as it went into depth about the science of aviation, planes, mechanics, piloting, jobs in this field, and the aviation industry in general. I had never taken such an in-depth class before, and we were really able to go into some interesting stuff.”

Diving deeper into why Heemir loves St. Mary’s, though, truly taps the essence of who he is as a person. Yes, he appreciates the smaller class sizes, the hands-on learning, the engaging nature of the school, and the skills of the teachers, but what he truly loves is the people—the staff, his coaches, the faculty, and his peers.

“It’s just the people,” he says unequivocally. “I really like the people at St. Mary’s. I could be myself at St. Mary’s, and people really know me. I enjoyed the diversity and that my classmates in particular respected each other’s differences. There’s a friendliness to St. Mary’s, an international feel, and I have friends from all over.”

Creating a friendly school community is one of the reasons why Heemir started the Food Truck Club: “I wanted to do something to build community after COVID-19. I thought that getting a big group together and going to the food trucks would be fun and that we could get different grade levels together at lunch.”

Heemir felt this connection to his St. Mary’s community in every aspect of his school life. He was captain of both the football and basketball teams his senior year and takes great pride in his leadership and mentorship of the younger students. Again, though, what sticks out to him is that his coaches and teammates really knew him.

“My nickname, ‘Hammer,’ I received from Coach O’Boyle back in 6th grade, my first year of football,” he says. “The nickname stuck with me everywhere I went. My friends would call me it (even at my old school, Hedrick), my dad would call me it, and eventually my high school coaches would call me it.

I found it awesome that everyone knew my nickname because that meant they knew me. I loved it. It always reminded me of when I started playing football and the coach who made me want to keep playing.”

Heemir believes all of these experiences—in the classroom, in the community, and on the football field and basketball court—will serve him well as he takes on the next challenge in his life.

Heemir is attending Purdue University, where he’ll major in mechanical engineering. His goal is to earn both his BA and MA in mechanical engineering

and to land an internship and then an interesting job. Engineering fits him perfectly, as he loves to understand how things work. He is always on the move and he loves to be busy. It’s why he feels mechanical engineering fits him so well.

“I’ve always wanted to be an engineer, pretty much known my whole life. I loved Legos, building stuff.

I used to take things apart and rebuild them all the time. I chose a broad field of engineering because I know I don’t want to do the same thing for my entire life. I want to be able to switch it up and not stay with the same job forever. I don’t want to get bored.”

The opportunity to attend such a prestigious engineering school is not at all lost on Heemir.

He and his sister are the first in their family to attend college, and he is proud to be “using the opportunities that my parents never got and they gave me.” When you combine this aspiration with his education, intelligence, self-awareness, affable nature, and desire to add to his community, it’s undoubtedly true that Heemir has a happy and successful life ahead of him.

In March 2022, there wasn’t much room for dreams in war-torn Ukraine. As Russia invaded from the south, the month quickly became the deadliest in 2022.

Just weeks earlier, Vladimir Putin’s army had attacked and then pulled back from Ukraine’s capital city of Kyiv. Tymofii Sybirtsev, who lived with his family in Kyiv, remembers those first weeks well.

“There were air-raid sirens and sounds of explosions due to missiles fired at our capital,” recalls Tym. “From the first days, there was a food shortage in the stores. There was no bread and milk or most other products. It was also very difficult to fill up the car because there was a limit on fuel and kilometers of queues at gas stations.” Amid war’s destruction, fear, and hopelessness, a childhood dream reemerged as a possibility.

As the war escalated during the following weeks, Tym’s parents started looking for options to get him and his twin sisters out of the country. That’s when Tym’s boyhood dream of studying in the United States became a lifeline. With the help of an agent, he selected St. Mary’s for his final year of high school; his sisters eventually headed to Germany to study. The family of five fled to Poland as they waited for the summer months to tick by.

As one can imagine, arriving in Medford after leaving Europe’s seventh-largest city with a prewar population of nearly 3 million would be a bit of a shock. This difference was not lost on the 17-year-old, but he was gracious about the St. Mary’s campus, saying, “The school itself struck me—the modern buildings, the huge beautiful grounds, and the comfortable dormitories.”

It was a sense of peace and calm that had been missing from his life for far too long. But the first week was tough for Tym, which is not uncommon for international students.

“I really wanted to get back to my family,” he says, “but after a week, that desire had completely disappeared.” Tym filled his days with the distraction of schoolwork, new friends, and sports.

He quickly found comfort in the bonds with teammates who were also classmates, playing soccer and tennis. “My fondest memory would be the time with the team. Of course, the taste of victory is unforgettable,” he says with a grin. Both teams enjoyed post-season play, but Tym also found success with a paddle in hand, winning several local ping-pong championships.

Across campus, Tym’s friendly nature generated lots of smiles. He adapted well to the mod system, recalling that he would be taking 12 to 15 classes at a time in Ukraine. Tym did exceptionally well in US History Survey and AP Economics.

From an “unforgettable” Homecoming game with friends to “time flying by” in Kevin Keating’s US History Survey class because it was so “interesting and fun,” there were opportunities to escape the reality of what was happening back home. Still, Tym candidly shares where his mind went when it was quiet.

“My grandmothers and a few friends are still in Ukraine, and my parents also take turns going to Ukraine. Of course, I worry about them all, but most of all I worry about those relatives who went to war because they are in the most dangerous places, and their lives always hang in the balance.”

Tym is spending his summer with family in Poland and will travel to Korea to meet up with two close friends he made at St. Mary’s. It’s then off to the University of Portland, transferring to a place with a population a bit closer to Kyiv’s.

“My decision to go to St. Mary’s for one year before university was definitely the right one,” he says. It’s a decision, a dream, that may have rubbed off on his little sisters, who are now hoping to attend St. Mary’s in the fall.

Dylan and Jeremy Had you flipped your television to CBS on Father’s Day morning, June 18, 2023, you would have noted frequent airtime for Dylan Wu, St. Mary’s Class of 2014. Dylan, now in his second year on the Professional Golf Association Tour, was playing the final round of the United States Open Championship, and many of his drives, approaches, pitches, and putts were televised and commented on by the A-team of CBS’s golf coverage. On that same morning, his younger brother Jeremy (Class of 2016) also received plenty of airtime. You see, Jeremy is almost always at his older brother’s side, working full-time as his caddie. And although Dylan is ultimately the lead attraction, Jeremy plays a key part in his success.

Their international network exposure was due largely to two facts: (1) Dylan’s playing partner that morning was Spaniard Jon Rahm, currently ranked no. 2 in the world and getting his own fair share of camera time; and (2) Dylan himself was having an excellent tournament, high enough on the leaderboard to garner Sunday attention and commentary.

For both Wu brothers, the US Open experience was a powerful first: qualifying and competing in a highly selective “major”—one of four special tournaments designated as such: the US Open, the British Open, the PGA Tour, and the Masters Tournament.

Dylan, relying on Jeremy’s club selection, putting reads, good advice, and unwavering support, went on to finish in the top 32 in the national Open, no small feat for a kid from Medford, Oregon.

The Wu brothers come from a golf-crazy family and from an early age had clubs in their hands. While at St. Mary’s, they honed their games while performing at a very high level.

Dylan won four straight team state championships from 2011 to 2014, capping his career with back-to-back individual state titles in 2013 and 2014. Dylan followed his high school career by playing four years at Northwestern University.

Jeremy also piled up the St. Mary’s accolades, including an individual state title his junior year, in 2015, during which he shot a state championship record 63, which still stands today. He followed his high school career with four more years on the course at Valparaiso University.

Their siblings, Jeremy’s twin Josh (Class of 2016) and their young sister, Kaylee (Class of 2019), also enjoyed distinguished golf careers at St. Mary’s. Josh earned the individual state title in 2016 and then played for four years at the United States Air Force Academy, whereas Kaylee racked up four straight team titles (2016 to 2019) and played for four years at Lipscomb University.

Their parents, Kevin and Julie Wu, have been there every step of the way, Kevin as their first golf coach and playing partner and Julie as their no. 1 cheerleader. Both still travel to as many tournaments as their work allows.

This second year on the tour for Dylan and Jeremy has been an excellent one. They’ve competed in more than 20 tournaments in locales far and wide, from Hawaii to Detroit and from Mexico to Canada. Dylan is currently ranked 99th overall on the annual money list, having earned more than $1.2 million this year, with six top-25 finishes.

Much of the PGA season remains, and the Wu brothers are focused on securing their spot on tour for next year. Undoubtedly, they are on the way up. They know that the extended TV time during the US Open wasn’t the apex.

It was just the beginning.

At press time, Dylan achieved his highest finish yet in a PGA Tour event: a fifth-place finish at the PGA 3M Open in Minnesota.

The St. Mary’s School Endowment The St. Mary’s School Endowment provides funds in perpetuity for financial aid, faculty development, and program support. With assets of just over $4 million, the endowment provides annual income to the school and is managed by the St. Mary’s School Board of Trustees. These funds, combined with other annual gifts, enable St. Mary’s to provide financial aid to worthy students, to support our faculty development, and to fund our programs.

Endowed Scholarship Funds The Carrico Family Foundation Fund Established in 2022 through a gift from the Carrico Family Foundation. This fund provides scholarship support to students in need.

Matilda Whitridge Scholarship Fund Established in memory of Matilda Rhiannon Whitridge, who attended St. Mary’s with the Class of 2022. Matilda embodied quiet confidence with strength and grace and radiated joy and laughter. She is remembered for her loving personality and beautiful smile. This fund provides financial aid support for the Kids Unlimited Academy–St. Mary’s Scholars program for other students who demonstrate a financial need.

Jerry and Ann Eiler Education Fund Established in 2021 by a generous gift from Jerry and Ann Eiler. The Eilers are champions of high-quality education, character development, and service to their community. Jerry and Ann have seen firsthand the high-quality education their grandsons received at St. Mary’s School and created this fund to provide that opportunity to others. Scholarships from this fund are awarded to students with financial need.

Chuck and Karin Watson Family Scholarship Fund Established in 2021 through a gift from Chuck and Karin Watson. Scholarships from this fund are awarded to students showing academic promise.

The Dr. Beverly F. Fuller Memorial Scholarship Fund Established in 2022. This scholarship honors Beverly Fuller, MD, wife of former St. Mary’s School President Frank Phillips, who passed away from cancer in 2022. Dr. Fuller, valedictorian of both her high school and college, was a longtime ob-gyn physician in Medford as well as an accomplished artist, musician, gardener, equestrian, and farmer.

This scholarship is established to assist a student who has interests in any of those areas or any student of academic and personal promise.

Mary Reeder Scholarship Fund Established in 1996 in loving memory of Mary Reeder, mother of 11 St. Mary’s alumni, generous benefactor, and ardent friend. Scholarships from this fund are awarded to 9th to 12th graders in need.

Eric DeGraw Scholarship Fund Established in memory of St. Mary’s student Eric DeGraw, who passed away in 1992. Eric was outgoing, kind, and a friend to all. Scholarships from this fund are awarded to incoming 9th graders who share these traits with Eric.

William B. Smullin Scholarship Fund Established in 1997 through a gift from William B. Smullin. Scholarships from this fund are awarded to incoming 9th graders.

Malcolm Stine Scholarship Fund

Loffer Family Scholarship

Established in 1991 through a gift from the Malcolm Stine estate. Scholarships from this fund support St. Mary’s student-athletes.

Established in 2004 by James and Linda Loffer.

Scholarships from this fund are awarded to high school students with average grades.

Robert C. Bigelow Scholarship

M.E. and Virginia Abbott Scholarship Fund

Scholarships from this fund are awarded to children of St. Mary’s graduates.

Professional Development and Faculty Funds The Bernard Friends and Colleagues Fund Established in 2022 by Ryan and Leah Bernard, MD, in honor of the outstanding St. Mary’s faculty and staff.

Ryan often speaks about how, in his opinion, the professional should be personal. This fund, to be used for faculty compensation and professional development, recognizes the personal investment St. Mary’s employees make to their community, their school, their students, and one another.

The James R. Meyer Pegasus Fund Established in 2022 by the Hren Family in honor of James R. Meyer, St. Mary’s School principal. This fund is in gratitude for James’s tireless concern for others.

Like the Greek mythical creature Pegasus, James inspires and empowers his students to achieve their own unique great victories in life. The James R. Meyer Pegasus Fund supports faculty and staff professional development, as well as salary enhancement for the St. Mary’s administration.

High School Faculty Development Fund Established by the EE Ford Foundation. These funds support professional development for St. Mary’s high school faculty.

The Frank Phillips Fund Established in 2023 through a collective gift to honor President Emeritus Frank Phillips. In 1989 Frank was hired as a part-time English teacher and librarian. By 2005 he had risen to the position of St. Mary’s School president. During his 33-year tenure at St. Mary’s, Frank transformed the college-preparatory school into a thriving student-centered international institution with a highly unique modular schedule and calendar. With Frank’s leadership, enrollment increased by 66%, and the school’s net assets increased from $1.7 million to $19.7 million. His final goal was to establish an endowment to safeguard St. Mary’s School in perpetuity. The Frank Phillips Fund will be used for faculty and administration recruitment, retention, and professional development.

Special Endowed Funds Jerry and Ann Eiler Discretionary Impact Fund

Louise M. Peterson Library and Education Fund

Established in 2021 by former St. Mary’s School Trustee Jerry Eiler and his wife, Ann, to provide discretionary support for the general enhancement of school operations.

Jerry served on the Board of Trustees from 2015 to 2021. His strong business and financial acumen made him an integral part of the campus expansion, St. Mary’s 2.0 curriculum change, and the property purchase. Jerry and Ann led the successful St. Mary’s 2.0 Campaign that transformed the campus with a new Student Commons and STEM Center.

Established in 2020 by St. Mary’s School Trustee J. Adam Peterson along with his wife and St. Mary’s College Counselor Lucinda Peterson, to honor Adam’s mother who dedicated her professional career to the preservation of libraries in Oregon’s rural communities. This fund provides support to the St. Mary’s School library for operation costs, including the annual purchase of new books, along with funding for the school’s general educational and scholarship needs.
