Turkey is Top 7 in the World Turkey’s tourism industry continues to defy the global economic downturn, climbing one place in the 2009 UN World Tourism Organisation’s (WTO) ranking of top ten most visited countries by tourist arrivals, making it now the 7th most visited country in the world. Turkey also has been growing ever-more popular with British visitors. TW Insight’s May newsletter named Turkey as one of the top five destinations for growth in the UK market with the all-inclusive holiday sector being particularly strong. And, according to market research agency GfK Turkey has become the second most popular destination for the British. Meanwhile, in September Turkey was voted the favourite destination in the Condé Nast Traveller UK Readers’ Travel Awards. Its popularity also ensured a spot in the prestigious World’s Top 100 list where it was voted number 2, while Istanbul was voted 5th in the Overseas Cities Category. PricewaterhouseCoopers anticipates that Turkey’s tourism sector will expand by 12.1% between 2010 and 2013. New investments in the tourism sector, a more sophisticated brand of tourism, wider choice of alternatives and the good value offered by Turkey for foreign visitors have all contributed to this success. Istanbul, Turkey’s cultural and financial capital, is proud to have been a 2010 European Capital of Culture. The city geared up for this momentous event with extensive restoration work to important sites, including the Hagia Sophia and the Topkapi Palace, and hosted a plethora of arts and cultural events across the visual arts, music and opera, performing arts, literature, cinema, museums and traditional arts. Mr. Ertugrul Gunay, Turkey’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, says: “Turkish tourism has been a spectacular success this year and the future remains bright, with visitor numbers continuing to grow. Looking ahead, we’re confident that our tourism industry is poised for even greater growth. We have also had a wonderful year hosting Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture which gave us the opportunity to showcase the city as an international capital of culture and art, whilst our nationwide tourism offering continues to diversify with areas such as culture & archaeology and interest & activity holidays proving ever more popular with each passing year.”

The Turkish Office of Culture and Tourism will be hosting special events at WTM to celebrate the successes of 2010 and preview Turkey’s tourism strategy for 2011 and beyond, including a special press conference with Mr. Ertugrul Gunay, Turkish Minister of Culture & Tourism, as well as special roundtable sessions with senior representatives from the Mugla and Antalya regions. Karaman said China was planning to construct 2,000 kilometers of railroad tracks both in and outside the country, noting that China was carrying out many projects in Libya, Algeria and the United States with this goal. Karaman said China was working to create a market in European countries and to this end considered Turkey an area to promote itself. n

London Turkish Film Festival 4-18 November 2010 The London Turkish Film Festival (LTFF) was inaugurated by Vedide Kaymak in 1993, and since then it has been a vital event in the London cultural scene. Vedide has been involved in a variety of arts and cultural activities in London - promoting Turkish culture, programming for MTV’s Turkish channel, and coproducing short film productions. Her project has been facilitated by the energetic support of the Rio Cinema in Dalston and by the encouragement of its general manager, Charles Rubinstein. The supportive role of Film London has also been a crucial factor in the development of the Festival. Now in its 16th year, the festival has grown from a small three-day event to a full-scale film festival over two weeks. The festival has always had an inclusive approach towards programming. Thus, it has provided a platform in the UK for a new generation of film-makers of Turkish origin who live and work in Western Europe. Indeed, as it has developed, the LTFF has sought to foreground the new kind of transnational cinema that has been proliferating across – and beyond – Europe. The festival has also featured a programme of short films, giving an opportunity to young feature and documentary film-makers. Over its lifespan, the LTFF has screened nearly 250 feature, and 350 short and documentary films. The festival has also invited nearly 200 guests, including directors, producers, actors, and short film-makers. Panels and discussions have also featured as another key activity of the festival, and have involved a wide range of participants from the international film industry. At this point in time, the LTFF is aiming to expand and to extend its reach to a wider audience. In order to be able to do this,

the festival now needs greater financial support. This year the festival has managed to gain financial support from the Turkish Ministry Of Culture And Tourism. Over the last decade, young Turkish film-makers, not only in Turkey, but also those living in Western Europe, have found new creative directions, making critically acclaimed films, and winning awards all over the world. The 16th LTFF promises to be an exciting and ground-breaking event, opening up the new transcultural Turkish cinema to new audiences in a range of venues across London. for a full list of films and events visit the website http://www.ltff.org.uk/ n Jan Ozay-Edinburg

Limak Holding finishes Prestige Hotel Project Limak Holding does not consider the recently renovated Yalova Thermal Hotel as a profit-oriented business, according to the company’s chairman. “But this is our most prestigious investment,” said Chairman Nihat Ozdemir. Speaking to the press at the opening of the boutique hotel in the northwestern province after nearly two Kaan Kavaloglu years of renovations, Ozdemir said the company saw that Limak group had acquired a prestigious status in Turkey’s tourism sector and thus decided it was time for them to invest in a prestige hotel. “We conducted a research study. We had a desire to ensure this investment had a cultural and historical aspect to it. Then we came upon this building. It had been deserted for 30 years when we found it. If you leave a wooden building to its own fate for 30 years, it loses everything inside it. We wanted to revive this historical building with complete respect to its authenticity.” Limak Tourism General Coordinator Kaan Kavaloglu said the idea was to invest in an unprecedented, unique structure. ”The hotel has three separate wings. It has 48 rooms, and 55 employees are working under its roof,” he said, adding that the total amount the company invested in the restoration project was $20 million. “We are not pricing the rooms for millions or thousands, unlike our competitors, just because we are selling a prestigious product. We want our people and our foreign visitors to come and see this invaluable structure. Therefore, we have moderate prices, starting at around 300 Turkish liras per person.” He also said that due to their reasonable pricing, during the Seker Bayram holiday the hotel was full. “We do not expect to make profit here.

This is technically impossible. If this was a 300- or 400-bed hotel, then we would have a chance. In order to make a profit, we would have to achieve a 90 percent occupancy rate and should price a room at more than $1,000. Then we could keep up with the tourist facilities. But there is no such pricing in the world; therefore what I say is barely feasible.” The hotel’s renovation and landscape architecture project is a product of two professors’ collaboration. Professors Gediz Urak and Isik Aksulu found that the original building was constructed in 1907 as a hotel open between June and September each year. “Therefore there was only a washbasin in every room and the water closets were shared. There was no heating system either. “We had to make additions to re-appropriate the hotel according to contemporary necessities. And of course these had to be done according to the rules of preservation. The buildings were in a pathetic condition. We could not do anything but reconstruct them. But we have given utmost care to ensure that the reconstruction was done with the use of wooden materials. Technically speaking, it was an elaborate application on the whole.” n

Thomas Cook Aims to Lead Turkish Market Britain’s Thomas Cook, having acquired leading German tourism company Öger Tours, aims to be the market leader in the Turkish tourism sector, according to Thomas Cook board chairman Peter Fankhauser. Vural Öger, the founder of Öger Tours, who offered holiday packages to Turkey, sold his company to Thomas Cook for 30 million euros in July this year. Speaking to Hamburg daily Hamburger Abendblatt, Fankhauser said Öger Tours was strategically successful. “The company’s market share was 14 percent in Turkey, while Thomas Cook’s is 13 percent. If we achieve to assemble both of them, we can be the market leader in Turkey,” Fankhauser said. “Turkey is a stabile and important target country for us.” Öger Tours’ loss of 7 million euros in 2009 was caused by extraordinary amortizations, Fankhauser said, adding changes would be made to reduce the company’s running costs. “But this does not include a staff change. We will make restrictions in the cost of hotel and transport capacities.” “As Öger’s experiences in the Turkish market are very important for us, he will take part in the company’s auditing board.” Also speaking to Hamburger Abendblatt, Öger said the sale of Öger Tours was a rational decision. “It was a difficult decision however it was rational. I believe that it was the best time to sell and Thomas Cook was the correct buyer. I think that we will get good results.” “If I had a chance to begin my career once more, I would follow the same route. I would work on Turkey’s attractiveness to Germans. Turkey has become an attractive tourism center,” Öger said. The acquisition does not include Öger Türk Tur Ltd., which runs operations in Turkey, and Öger’s other companies in Turkey. ■

LOT Polish Airlines’ Financial Results Continue to Take Off LOT’s net results for the first seven months of the year are almost 60million higher than for the previous year. The airline has not only carriedsignificantly more passengers than planned, but has also successfully achievedits scheduled income for the year. LOT continues both to head the airlinesoperating in Poland and to record a more dynamic rise in numbers than itsequals in Europe. Since the beginning of the year, LOT hascarried almost 2.5 million passengers (2,499,000) which means not only thatthere has been a growth of almost 12% in relation to last year, but also thatthe airline has attained results which are better, by 5%, than in 2008, priorto the crisis in the sector. Scheduled flights alone brought the Polish carrierover 2,233,000 passengers, an increase of almost 9% on the figures for 2009,with the rising popularity of charters accounting for the rest. As Sebastian Mikosz, Chairman of LOT PolishAirlines S.A.. points out, “According to the data published on 2nd Septemberthis year by the Civil Aviation Office, LOT continues to be the largest carrierin Poland,” going on to add, “We are one of the few European airlines to haverecorded so significant an increase in flights, leaving competitors flying toand from Poland standing.” Together with the increase in flights, LOThas improved its load factor, the take-up of seats on a plane. In the firsthalf of the year, the level reached almost 75%, an improvement of as much as 4%on the previous year. In comparison, the average load factor for 2009 was 70%and, for 2008, 73%. The combined income for the first sevenmonths of 2010 was PLN 1 billion, 622 million, meaning that the level ofreturns has been maintained in relation to the PLN 1 billion 615 million for2009. It is true that the airline recorded figures lower by PLN 48 million onlast year for technical aircraft services. This is primarily connected with thedecision to focus on core operations, namely, passenger and cargo transport andthe intensified inspection of the airline’s planes which this gave rise to. Thelevel of income for the

period in question has risen by almost PLN 105 millionfrom one year to the next. The net results for January to July thisyear are minus PLN 64 million, which is a significant improvement on theresults for 2009, at minus PLN 124 million and 2008, at minus PLN 118 million. However, the operating results, at minus PLN 35 million, were significantlybetter than for the previous two years, with minus PLN 170 million for 2009and, particularly, minus PLN 175 million for 2008. In analysing the Company’soperating results, it is worth emphasising that, at minus 2%, LOT’s operatingmargin is placed at either the same level or somewhat higher than the averagefor other European carriers which have also recorded negative margins. Thefinancial results obtained were primarily, and crucially, affected byfluctuations in exchange rates and aviation fuel prices, both of which had anegative impact on the Company, as did the volcanic eruption in Iceland. Nonetheless, it proved possible to economise and make savings in order to coverthe rise in fuel prices and ensure that this was not passed on to thepassengers in the form of higher ticket prices. n

The most beautiful historical works of Istanbul are at the historical peninsula inside the city walls between the Marmara Sea and the Golden Horn. This historical peninsula is like an open air museum full of architectural and artistic works bearing the traces of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. The hills of the city are enhanced by the more than 500 mosques. Among these mosques, the Sultanahmet Mosque with its six minarets, built by Sultan Ahmet I in the seventeenth century, is the symbol of Istanbul. It is also called “the Blue Mosque” because of the blue glazed tiles used in its interior decoration.

Magnificent Golden Horn The Golden Horn is a historic inlet of the Bosphorus dividing the city of Istanbul and forming the natural harbor that has sheltered Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and other ships for thousands of years. It is a scimitar-shaped estuary that joins the Bosphorus just at the point where that strait enters the Sea of Marmara, thus forming a peninsula the tip of which is “Old Istanbul” (ancient Byzantion and Constantinople). It’s Greek and English names mean the same, but the significance of the designation “golden” is obscure. It has witnessed many tumultuous historical incidents and its dramatic vistas have been the subject of countless works of art.

The Golden Horn, known as Haliç in Turkish (which literally translates as “estuary”), is the long arm of the Bosphorus that separates Eminönü from Beyoglu. Legend has it that the Golden Horn got its name during the Fall of Constantinople, when the panicking Greeks hurled the city’s treasures into the inlet. During Byzantine times it was closed off with a heavy chain to protect the lightly defended sea walls on the city’s north side. Mehmet II the Conqueror literally got around the chain by building greased wooden causeways over the hill behind Galata and having his soldiers pull his fleet along them to the water.

The Golden Horn starts from Eminonu and Galata Bridge. This bridge is the heart of Istanbul, spanning the Golden Horn from Karaköy on the north to Old Istanbul, centered on Sultanahmet, on the south. Crossing the bridge you look west toward Europe and east across the Bosphorus to Üsküdar and Asia. Right at the northern end is Karaköy (Galata), a Genoese colony during Byzantine times. It is said that Sultan Beyazid II commissioned Leonardo da Vinci to design a bridge to span the Golden Horn in 1503, only 50 years after the city was captured from the Byzantines. The great artist and engineer did the design, but alas the bridge was never built. The present

The district extends from the Golden Horn all the way to the shore of the Black Sea. Eyüp is also the name of a prominent neighborhood and former village in the district, located at the confluence of the Kagıthane and Alibey streams at the head of the Golden Horn. The Eyüp neighborhood is a historically important area, especially for Turkey’s Muslims. In recent years many of the factories have been closed or cleaned up, the Golden Horn no longer smells so bad, and it is possible to sit by the waterside. The area has

also increasingly attracted conservative Muslim families. The Eyüp Sultan Mosque continues to draw tourists visiting Istanbul, as well as larger numbers of Turkish religious pilgrims. At Friday prayer and throughout Ramadan, the area is full of visitors from all over the city. Pilgrims to the mosque include a wide range of Muslims, especially before weddings or circumcisions. The Eyüp Sultan Mosque is situated in the district of Eyüp on the European side of Istanbul, near the Golden Horn, outside the Walls of Constantinople. Built in 1458, it was the first mosque constructed by the Ottoman Turks following their conquest of Istanbul, in 1453. In recent years, a thriving market has grown around the mosque selling prayer mats, beads, dates from Saudi Arabia, scented oils, Islamic books, recordings of Koran recitation, and other items. On
