Faculty within the program conduct research on a variety of topics and their work spans from basic science to applied clinical research. Faculty are well respected in their research and clinical fields, and give numerous presentations nationwide and internationally. Various faculty members have joint appointments in SMPH Departments of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, Pediatrics, and Family Medicine and Community Health. The DPT Program’s place in SMPH enables cooperative teaching arrangements and interprofessional programming with students from numerous health care professional programs.

The philosophy behind the UW-Madison Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program curriculum focuses on the study of diagnosis of, and interventions for, improving dysfunctional human movement, and is built upon a foundation of evidence-based practice that includes scientific inquiry, patient values, and clinical experience. Curriculum is organized into three distinct, yet integrated, tracks: Basic science, Clinical science, and Clinical practice. Each track consists of sequential and progressive course work.

Shapiro Information for Faculty List of Last Year’s Projects Overview of Student Research Opportunities

Shapiro Summer Research Program

The Shapiro Summer Research Program supports opportunities for students to undertake full-time summer research under the mentorship of UW faculty members in the summer between first and second year of medical school. It is a very popular program: in recent years, approximately 80% of the class participate in the Shapiro program. Research projects in any area of basic science, clinical, translational, health services, global, and public health research are welcome!

Vera Tsenkova, PhD Director of Health Professional Student Research

ProgramResearchSummerShapiro

The Shapiro program cycle begins in November/December when faculty post a description of their upcoming summer projects. M1s read the project descriptions, identify projects of interest, and contact faculty directly. Once a faculty-student “match” is confirmed through mutual agreement (Jan/Feb), students submit an application to the Shapiro Summer Research Program. Applications are reviewed in April and students begin their mentored research experience in May.

Graduate Programs in Clinical Investigation (MS, PhD)

Certificates and Graduate Programs in Clinical Investigation Program

The ICTR offers both Certificate Programs and Graduate Research Degrees in Clinical Investigation. These programs provide a foundation in clinical/translational research methods, analysis, and study design. Certificates are available in the Fundamentals of Clinical Research and Implementation Science & Community Health Outcomes. The MS and PhD programs confer research degrees based on investigations into patient populations or data, specific methods of treating patients, or the clinical tools used to provide treatments.

What is Clinical Investigation?

For questions, please contact studentinquiry@ictr.wisc.edu

What is Implementation Science and Community Health Outcomes?

Clinical research is the study of illness and health in people and communities. Through clinical research we learn how to prevent, diagnose, and treat illness.

Implementation science and community health outcomes research looks into ways to translate what has been learned in controlled settings into positive outcomes in real-world clinical practice and community health (translational research).

What is Clinical Research?

Clinical Investigation is a field in which teams of health care professionals, biostatisticians, and others imag ine, design, and conduct clinical research, and then take discoveries to human or animal patient populations in the healthcare system or in communities. Clinical investigators pursue bench to bedside research.
