A Note from Rodney Cobb It has been a devastating year for the City of San Marcos park system recovering from the two disastrous floods of 2015. Our sympathies are with those residing in the affected areas and our gratitude is with the citizens of San Marcos for their patience and assistance in our on-going clean-up efforts. We have some exciting park improvement projects scheduled for 2016 and will be updating the parks master plan. We look to continue to provide an excellent recreation experience for citizens and visitors of San Marcos. Look for exciting things to come! Rodney Cobb Executive Director of Community Services

50+ Pickleball

Adult Pickleball open play is now offered on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9:00 – 11:00 AM at the San Marcos Activity Center! Open play on Friday depends on gym availability and the schedules of other programs and is subject to change. Pickleball is a cross between badminton, tennis and ping-pong. It is played on a badminton-sized court 20 feet x 44 feet with wooden paddles, a whiffle ball and a net that is lowered to 34 inches. Players volley the ball back and forth to try to score on the opposition. It was designed to be easy to learn for people of all ages and athletic abilities. In the past 10 years the growth of Pickleball has exploded mainly in senior communities throughout the United States. Pickleball is free for Activity Center members. Nonmembers will be charged the daily use rate of $3.00 for residents and $4.00 for nonresidents. Paddles and balls are available for those who do not have their own. If you would like to learn more about the sport you are welcome to attend a session to observe and give it a try, free of charge. For more information call 512.393.8400.

SM Greenbelt Alliance An activity to get you outside and moving is joining the San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance trail team. You hike to the worksite and then use your upper body strength using a hoe, rake, shovel, loppers, saw, etc. There’s fresh air, great scenery and good company working with our trail crew members. The San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance currently has four trail crews working on bringing the natural areas back to a safe, enjoyable experience. The regular trail crew meets Thursday mornings from 7-9 a.m. Saturday mornings the crew works 9-11 a.m. Sunday afternoons doing restoration work removing invasives and planting/seeding from 3-5 p.m. And an additional crew meets Monday afternoons from 4-6 p.m. Individuals are encouraged to sign-up for notification of where to meet at http://smgreenbelt.blogspot.com/2015/12/ we-need-your-help-volunteer.html Major floods impacted the five natural areas that protect the developed areas around San Marcos. Natural areas that are open but suffered damage to the trails include Spring Lake Natural Area, Ringtail Ridge and Schulle Canyon. Purgatory Creek Natural Area will reopen in phases as trails are cleared. Blanco Shoals Natural Area remains closed. Monthly birding hikes, group runs sponsored by Core Running, Sierra Club hikes, and San Marcos Area Trail Walkers Meet-Up group hikes are all taking place in the open natural areas. We get a lot of out of town visitors so pass the word that the natural areas are coming back. Flood is a stage in the life of a river or creek and that change is natural.
