San Marcos Parks & Recreation Department Activity Guide - March-August 2015

1

A Note from Rodney Cobb We are sitting here writing this introduction about the summer activity guide and looking out the window at the gloomy, cold rain falling‌. Then it reminds us that spring and summer is just around the corner and that means sunny days in the parks. Summer is a great time of year to spend outdoors with family and friends. Maybe even go on vacation somewhere! Here in San Marcos everyday can be a vacation. You can have an event filled day from floating the river, hanging out at Rio Vista Park, swimming in Rio Vista Pool, enjoying a workout class, playing Pickleball and ending the evening in Plaza Park with concerts and movies. The Parks and Recreation Department offers a wide array of activities for children, families, seniors and adults. We welcome the community and visitors to enjoy the various programs and events that we offer. Thank you for your continued support and participation in our programs and events! We look forward to seeing you at an event or in one of our beautiful parks. Sincerely, Rodney Cobb Executive Director of Community Services

The only acceptable forms of proof include a current electric, gas, water, or garbage bill that shows your address. “Resident” rates are only available to those who live within the city limits of San Marcos.

Waitlists Waitlists are automatically created when we have more registrations for a program than we have space. Your receipt will indicate if you are registered for a program or have been placed on the waiting list.

Program Fees Resident/Non Resident Fees

San Marcos residents make significant contributions to the operation of this agency through the payment of property taxes. These contributions are above the fees that they also pay for programs and services as offered by the Parks and Recreation Department. In recognition of this contribution, San Marcos residents qualify for a “Resident” rate for some programs. Those who live outside of the boundaries of the City of San Marcos and who participate within programs qualify for the “Non-Resident” price.

Refunds • Full refunds will be issued for any program

cancelled by the Parks & Recreation Department.

• Participants may request refunds for classes

up to three business days before the program’s first meeting. In athletic programs and leagues, the program is considered to begin with its first practice. There may be exceptions to this policy; see program descriptions. • Refunds for trips and contractual workshops will only be issued if the spot can be filled from the waiting list. Some trips are non-refundable. • Fees charged to credit cards will be refunded back to the original credit card within three to five days unless there is an issue with that card. If there is an issue with the card, a check would have to be processed which will take two to four weeks.

50+ Pickleball

Pickleball is a cross between badminton, tennis and ping-pong. It is played on a badminton-sized court 20 feet x 44 feet with wooden paddles, a wiffle ball and a net that is lowered to 34 inches. Players volley the ball back and forth to try to score on the opposition. It was designed to be easy to learn for people of all ages and athletic abilities. In the past 10 years the growth of Pickleball has exploded mainly in senior communities throughout the United States. Our adult Pickleball program has become so popular that we added a third court. This will help accommodate our growing number of participants and decrease the wait time between games. We also added Wednesday mornings from 9:00-11:00 AM to our Adult Pickleball program through July. The additional day depends on gym availability and the schedules of other programs. We will do our best to increase Pickleball open play when we can and any changes will be announced during our regular open play hours. Regularly scheduled adult Pickleball takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 - 11:00 AM at the San Marcos Activity Center. Pickleball is free for Activity Center members. Nonmembers will be charged the daily use rate of $3.00 for residents and $4.00 for nonresidents. Paddles and balls are available for those who do not have their own. If you would like to learn more about the sport you are welcome to attend a Tuesday or Thursday session to observe and give it a try for free.

SM Greenbelt Alliance San Marcos Natural Areas The San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance (SMGA) works to create and conserve an interconnected system of parks and natural areas for our community and future generations. Preserve the peace, the quiet, and the place… Our natural areas are living, breathing places with a wide variety of plants and animals. Please help us care for these beautiful places; they are working hard to clean our water and our air. Let’s return the favor by keeping them clean and natural and following these city park rules: Take only photos; leave only footprints. Parks open sunrise to sunset (curfew applies after sunset). Keep dogs on a leash and remove their waste. Campfires, glass containers, motor vehicles, weapons, horses, and camping are not permitted. • Stay on established trails on public property. • Bicycles yield to hikers; refrain from biking on muddy trails. • • • •

Note: San Marcos natural areas do not currently offer restroom facilities or running water. Some trails can be rugged and grasses tall, so wear long pants and closed, strong shoes. Water, hat, sunscreen and camera are a good idea. Report problems to San Marcos Parks & Recreation at 512.393.8400. For emergencies, call 911.

Nature Center Volunteers

The Nature Center provides volunteer opportunities for people over 18, pending a background check (under 18 with parental supervision and background checks). We have a particular need for people interested in gardening and landscaping. Most volunteer work is outside in the gardens or inside helping to maintain display areas. We welcome Texas State student groups and encourage community service groups to adopt a native plant bed. Volunteers are also needed to help with school groups and our biannual plant sales. Please call Jenna Winters, Nature Center Coordinator at 512.393.8447 or by email at jwinters@sanmarcostx.gov for more information.
