The beat goes on with help from our friends… for 23 years!

Throughout most of my adult life, smooth jazz has been my source of solace, excitement and fun, and the oxygen that revived me during my previously overwhelmingly stressful and unfulfilling career endeavors. So much so that I launched this magazine dedicated to the genre. That was 23 years ago!

To celebrate, we normally host a brunch party and jam session for our advertisers at Spaghettini in Seal Beach, California, but we’ve had to postpone it due to the pandemic. However, we definitely plan to resume these fun celebrations again in the near future.

So, I want to give huge thanks to every artist, company and individual who has supported us by advertising in any of the 201 issues of our award-winning magazine that we’ve published for more than two decades.

A lot has changed since our 16-page, mostly black-andwhite, newsprint tabloid rolled off the presses in December 1999. But the insistence of jazz fans to read a physical magazine has not, despite technology that has pushed more publications out of the hands of readers and onto digital screens online.

I have tremendous gratitude for all of the advertisers that have helped us weather the storms of increased print and distribution costs, which include the current nationwide paper shortage and the abrupt closing of our forever (and fantastic) local printer, which was the last web printer in San Diego County. (It was sold unexpectedly to a much less impressive competitor in Orange County, which was too unorganized to print this issue by our usual deadline.) Most newspapers and magazines are printed on web presses, so many of us in the local trade are feeling the pain.

Of course, this magazine also wouldn’t be possible without the group effort of writers, editors, graphic

designers, webmasters, administrative support staff, distributors, and most importantly, you, our extremely valued reader! Thank you all for allowing me to live and write about the smooth jazz lifestyle and to share it with other genre enthusiasts nationwide and beyond.

CHEERS TO 23 YEARS!

JAZZTRAX

FESTIVAL

The Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival is a unique event on the must-do circuit. It offers two, four-day weekends of smooth jazz, plus a Saturday night after-party on the beach with a full bar and a DJ spinning dance tunes. The journey starts by traveling 26 miles off the Southern California coastline by boat to Avalon. And, chances are you’ll catch an artist or musicians on the same sailing. Another exciting possible sighting you may encounter on the hourlong excursion are schools of dolphin swimming and leaping alongside the boat.

On arrival, visitors can walk to their hotel, hail a cab, or perhaps take a shuttle if their hotel is one of the few that offers this service. Although there are no rental cars, thankfully, almost everything is within walking distance in the 1-square-mile of the island’s only city. And, the local public transit bus, “The Garibaldi,” can get visitors just about anywhere. Golf carts are also available for rent, usually with a two-hour maximum.

The festival starts on Thursday at sunset with “Unplugged Under the Stars” on Descanso Beach, just a short walk along the Pacific Ocean shoreline from the Catalina Casino building, the main concert venue. Patrons can enjoy two sets of artists performing on a small stage from

The main concerts are held Friday through Sunday on the top-floor Ballroom of the iconic Catalina Casino, which is not a gaming facility, but means “gathering place” in Italian. Performances are staged under 50-foot ceilings with five Tiffany-inspired chandeliers. The circular Ballroom is adorned in a lavish medley of rose-hued walls, gold and silver leaf accents and art deco reliefs. French doors connect the Ballroom to the encircling veranda, which offers sweeping, 360-degree views of Avalon Bay from the 11-story-high building.

Food, wine and cocktails are available for purchase at the vintage full-service bar, which was restored to its original 1929 condition.

Festival merchandise and CDs are available for purchase at the JazzTrax store on the mezzanine level, directly below the Ballroom, where some of the artists will also sign CDs for fans after their shows.

This year, to help protect all patrons from the spread of COVID-19, festival producer Art Good is requiring all staff and attendees to be fully vaccinated and present verifiable proof of vaccination for entry into the Casino.

Although this venue doesn’t offer any wagering, it’s a sure bet that festivalgoers will enjoy this enchanting setting with performances by 12 acts of fan favorites and up-and-coming talent each four-day weekend.

From Prodigy to Sought-After Seasoned Pro

Though he’s younger than many of his colleagues, 29-year-old Vincent Ingala has worked for more than a decade to take his place among the most seasoned contemporary jazz artists.

The multi-instrumentalist plays almost everything except trumpet on his most recent CD, Fire & Desire. But for the whole of his career, the tenor saxophone has defined him.

“I felt like I hit a plateau with drums, guitar and keyboards,” Ingala said by phone from his home in Connecticut.

“The saxophone was more complex, and I stuck with it because I wanted to rise up to that challenge. It’s your own sound, and it’s so expressive. It’s like the human voice.”

In 2007, when Ingala was just entering high school, he decided to use his savings to buy his first professional horn at a shop in New Jersey.

“My parents drove me,” Ingala recalled. “We could have gone to New York, but USA Horn had the six or seven models that I wanted to try out.”

As his parents watched and waited, Ingala sampled different horns. Then he picked up a Yamaha tenor saxophone.

“I literally blew three notes, and I looked at my parents and said, ‘This is the one.’ I knew instinctively, the way it was reacting to me. I played for an hour. My parents said, ‘Make sure this is the one you want because you are spending a lot of money.’ The horn has never let me down. Every time I step onstage, I have full confidence.”

A millennial with old-school sensibilities, Ingala has amassed a following with seven albums that resulted in a number of top 20 Billboard jazz albums, including Personal Touch (2018) and Fire & Desire (2021), his third release on the Shanachie Entertainment label.

Last year, Ingala joined Dave Koz’s Summer Horns tour and performed for the first time at the Hollywood Bowl, a career highlight.

In addition to playing on recordings by guitarist Peter White and pianists David Benoit and Gregg Karukas, he’s a frequent featured artist on the Dave Koz & Friends at Sea cruises.

In 2023, he’ll join Rick Braun’s River Cruise Getaway with Koz and Jonathan Butler.

16 | SMOOTH JAZZ NEWS

“It’s like a Disneyland for musicians because you are connecting with all friends and family around the world,” Ingala enthused. “It’s a highlight of the year.”

Ingala started building a fan base early in life, and from the beginning, it was a multi-generational family affair.

All through high school, he performed weekends with a support group of Sicilian family members.

“My parents never once discouraged me from pursuing a career in music,” Ingala said with sincerity. “We are music people. We aren’t into sports or other things; we love music. There is a rich history of everybody going to see bands growing up. When things started to take off for me, even on a local basis, it was exciting for everybody, and they followed me.”

Ingala’s father, Leo, would work the sound board and Dawn, his mother, sold CDs and helped to book engagements.

At age 17, Ingala released his first album, North End Soul (2010), recorded on a four-track tape player.

As the recording process evolved and became computerized, Ingala built a home studio that enabled him to assume the roles of artist, composer and engineer. He taught himself drum programming, consulted with sound engineers and spent hours listening to and dissecting tracks to learn how to craft songs. He also strived to make his saxophone sound as authentic as it does in live performances.

“Occasionally, I’ll bring in somebody specialized,” he said. “But for the most part, I’m a one-man, one-stop shop. I work best that way. I have a vision that I hear in my head, and I know exactly what I want. Once I got over the learning curve, and I was at home with music production, my creations came to life. Fire & Desire represents how I actually sound.”

The album’s title cut is an urgent, up-tempo number that commands attention with Ingala’s powerful horn phrasing over rock guitar licks and a thumping rhythm track.

“Shadow Dancer,” the opening number, has a swaying tempo, a harmonizing horn chorus and an infectious sax melody.

Ingala’s girlfriend, Olivia, picked the title.

“I remember her listening to that song while recording it and getting her advice,” Ingala said. “She envisioned the silhouette of a dancer, faceless, and in the distance dancing. I thought it was a perfect title for the imagery that comes to mind.”

All the songs on Fire & Desire are original except for one. “Disco Sax,” penned by Jimmy Roach, pays tribute to Houston Person, a tenor sax player who released the song in 1975. The groove is an invitation to dance the hustle and a throwback to Studio 54 days.

Ingala was introduced to the song through his father, a former DJ with an extensive record collection of rare and popular jazz, soul and R&B recordings.

“I remember hearing this tune, and I thought, ‘I’m going to redo it one day,’” Ingala said. continued on page 18

“I finally got around to putting my own little spin on it, which I thought was fun. I love to blend all different types of elements and influences with my music, especially the stuff I grew up with.”

In December, Ingala will join guitarist Adam Hawley and vocalist Lindsey Webster on Mindi Abair’s “I Can’t Wait for Christmas” Tour.

“I’ve done Peter White’s Christmas tour for the past two years, but Peter will join the Dave Koz and Friends 25th Anniversary Christmas Tour this year. So, Mindi and I decided to keep it going for Peter, and we’ll put on a great Christmas show.”

Ingala will reach a milestone on Dec. 10 when he celebrates his 30th birthday while on the “I Can’t Wait for Christmas” Tour.

He only has one objection to his busy schedule. “It’s not having access to food,” he said with mocked exaggeration.

“A lot of musicians don’t want a lot of food in their system before a show, so they want to eat after the show. The problem is, a lot of restaurants are closed, and we have to get up early the next day, so there is a cycle of trying to find food and staying full and not overeating on the road. It’s a big complaint for me, especially being a growing Italian boy!”

DAVE KOZ

Dave Koz has a sleigh-full of surprises for his fans this holiday season.

The multi-Grammy nominated saxophonist is celebrating a record-breaking milestone, a new family member, a new album, and if that isn’t enough, a secret from his past.

Christmas Ballads marks the sax player’s eighth holiday CD, with 10 elegant and thoughtful selections of traditional songs, an original co-written composition, and some songs Koz has never recorded before.

A longtime core of close friends and contemporary jazz musicians contributed to the album, including David Benoit on acoustic piano, Rick Braun on trumpet and flugelhorn, and acoustic guitarist Peter White. French composer and multi-instrumentalist Philippe

Saisse, who produced and arranged Christmas Ballads, also has a long history with Koz.

In 2010, Saisse played keyboards in Dave Koz & The Kozmos, the house band for “The Emeril Lagasse Show.” Koz also enlisted Saisse to co-write songs and perform on A New Day (2020), his first album of original music in a decade.

Koz is adept at playing alto, tenor and soprano saxophones, and he said that the decision about which sax to use is often an instinctive feeling. On Christmas Ballads, for instance, listeners benefit from his skilled instrument choices. “I think it’s really about the feel of a song,” Koz mused.

“The key has something to do with it, but you can always change the key to fit the sax. It’s a hunch that it’s the right instrument. But I’ve been wrong before. I might start a song on soprano, and nope, it’s turned into an alto song. For me, there is a way of being expressive on soprano that’s different than on alto or tenor.”

On the song “Merry Christmas Darling,” his soprano sax summons memories of the late Karen Carpenter’s clear, melodic vocal range. Koz also

chose the soprano for “Ave Maria,” a surprising and poignant addition to the collection of holiday favorites.

“‘Ave Maria’ is a sacred melody,” said the platinum-selling artist. “I never recorded that song before, and I wanted to be as respectful as possible. I felt I could be more classical with the soprano sax; it’s almost like an oboe and more appropriate to play on soprano.”

A belated anniversary appearance at Art Good’s Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival on Oct. 22 will precede his Christmas tour. “Catalina [Island] JazzTrax Festival was one of the first gigs I ever had when I was first starting out,” Koz recalled. “My first album came out in October of 1990, and Art said, ‘Let’s do a 30th anniversary.’ But then COVID happened. So, we moved the anniversary to 2022, and we’ll celebrate, even though it’s 32 years now.

“Art was one of the first creators of the community destination event where the camaraderie and the music brings together everyone because of their shared love of music. I’ve always had a soft spot for Catalina,” Koz said of the scenic isle he describes as a “hidden gem” in Southern California.

Soon after the Catalina appearance, Koz will travel to Atlanta to launch his

Dave Koz and Friends 25th Anniversary Christmas Tour on Thanksgiving weekend. Koz will be joined by all-star veterans Braun, White and pianist Keiko Matsui. Vocalist and San Diego Music Awards-winner Rebecca Jade, who sings “Happy Xmas (War is Over)” on Christmas Ballads, is the tour’s newcomer.

“It blows me away that we have been able to do this tour, uninterrupted, for 25 years,” Koz enthused. “It’s the longest running jazz Christmas tour of all time. We mix it

up with different casts every year so the audience is exposed to new talent.”

Koz mixed it up during this past summer, too.

Instead of his usual Summer Horns shows, he performed a series of festival dates in Europe with pop-funk guitarist Cory Wong. He and Wong collaborated in 2021 and released The Golden Hour CD, featuring a five-piece horn section arranged by Michael Nelson, Prince’s primary horn arranger.

Koz also appeared as Barry Manilow’s special guest on his arena tour of the East Coast. It’s a longtime friendship with the special benefit of getting invited to travel on Manilow’s private plane.

“Barry has always been a mentor in music and in life,” Koz said. “The single most important thing I’ve learned from him is that if you are lucky enough to build a fan base that is loyal to you, it’s something to be nurtured and never taken for granted.”

Koz has another responsibility to nurture, with one slight drawback.

Buddy, his mixed-breed rescue puppy, does not appear to be a fan of the saxophone.

“Every time I play, he howls,” Koz said with a laugh. “He just celebrated his first birthday. He’s like an old Jewish man in a young dog’s body. I co-parent him with my assistant, Janice. I always wanted a dog. I grew up with dogs, and I love them so much. I always talked myself out of getting one because of my travel schedule. Then it was, let’s just do this. He has brought so much joy. He’s a very smart dog, but he’s a momma’s boy. When Janice is not around, he thinks, ‘I’ll hang with you.’”

However, Koz fans are always eager to “hang out” on land or at sea with the consummate entertainer whose motto is “Seeing the world together through music.” All three weeks of his 2023 Dave Koz & Friends at Sea full-ship charter cruises to Spain, Morocco and Portugal are sold out.

Few musicians can attain the longevity or the success that Koz has enjoyed, a result of expert musicianship and smart collaborations.

And, the future continues to beam brightly for Koz, who never stops developing his craft, working with artists of all generations, expanding his influence and branching out into a variety of other projects.

The 59-year-old musician said that he has just completed his segments for a soon-to-be-released documentary about the contemporary jazz genre produced by A24, a New York-based entertainment company.

Then there is the six-episode web series “Just Be Koz” (view at www. davekoz.com) in which Koz fans learn details never before revealed.

Originally, the idea was to create a video biography, a way to connect with fans by sharing personal history. But an artist from Finland suggested presenting the information as lighthearted animation.

The first episode, titled “Lose the ‘ID,’ Kid,” shows Koz as a young man meeting with art directors to approve the image and title of his first album cover. The cover is a photograph of him leaning back and blowing into his horn with the name Dave Koz depicted in bold lettering.

“I never referred to myself as Dave, ever, until my first record came out,” Koz said. “I’ve always been David. David Stephen Koz. I thought it was funny that they thought I should be ‘Dave Koz,’ and I just went with it.”

It’s not all in a name. Perhaps, Koz reveals who he really is through his devotion to his craft. At the end of the animated clip, he wrote a note:

“Even when outside forces try to change you, rest assured, the real you still comes through.”

CASHMIRA’S STARGUIDE

Libra Sept. 23 - Oct. 22

Someone close to you has been making quite a few mistakes lately. Don’t wait to bring up the issues. If you delay, things could get out of hand, and then it will be so much harder to deal with the fallout.

Scorpio Oct. 23 - Nov. 21

Good for you! You’ve taken steps to become healthier and happier. This is a prime time for you to experience things you may have missed. Take some chances and discover new interests but of course don’t forget your close friends.

Sagittarius Nov. 22 - Dec. 21

You must deal with someone injecting roadblocks into your regular plans.

Try to keep a cool head, explain what you need and why. That should make communication work better for both of you and lead to the right results.

Capricorn Dec. 22 - Jan. 19

You can’t help everyone and solve every problem. It may be better to take a step back and do nothing. You certainly have good intentions, but you could cause a ruckus by inserting yourself into the situation.

Aquarius Jan. 20 - Feb. 18

You have a lot of decisions to make on the homefront. There are so many things that need attention, and your procrastinating ways won’t do you much good. Have someone help you make a list, and address the issues seriously.

Pisces Feb. 19 - March 20

You are an honest person, but somehow you have found yourself to be in a group of negative and caustic people who take the wrong types of chances. Try to keep to yourself, and devise a way to exit this group with your ethics intact.

Aries March 21 - April 19

An ongoing power struggle has been bothering you for quite a while. This may be the perfect time to address the issue with a face-toface discussion. Try to keep your approach as calm as possible to get the best results.

Taurus April 20 - May 20

Even though you are steaming ahead with your plans, you have come upon a problem at the job. You could move forward without harming yourself, or you could bring up the issue. It’s a question of right or wrong, and you know what to do.

Gemini May 21 - June 21

Wow, you feel like your energy is just about gone! Working hard can really get you down, but you need to get things done. These busy times will pass, but be careful not to burn yourself out before that time comes.

Cancer June 22 - July 22

Don’t fight about it! You became partners to accomplish something. Now you disagree on how to manage finances. If you don’t get all sides to understand the reasons behind your differences, everything could just blow up.

Leo July 23 - Aug. 22

Remember you are the Leo here. Don’t worry about all the back talk coming your way because you can take it. You’ve stated your case, and let it go. Others will have to deal with any complaints. You don’t have time to listen.

Virgo Aug. 23 - Sept. 22

Everyone knows you can be kindhearted, but it doesn’t mean you always have to pick up the check. This is getting a little out of control. Your friends’ finances are their business. Don’t let their complaining and moaning about funds affect you.

BOOK REVIEW

“Mysteries in the Music: Case Closed” by Jim Berkenstadt Genius Book Publishing 2022 • 275 pages • $19.95

Reviewed by Darcy Peters

Jim Berkenstadt plays detective in this book of various musical legends and tall tales. Fans have heard many of these stories, but the author sets out to investigate if all of them are based on fact. He researched documents and interviewed many players to get the real scoop. He looks at several stories from different musical genres.

He addresses the long-held story that Sam Phillips was the lone discoverer of a talented youngster named Elvis Presley, when in fact it was also his employee Marion Keisker who brought the singer to Phillips’ attention. At her suggestion, the band Presley practiced with is also credited.

There is another story about a fake review of an album in Rolling Stone. Rumors were that a super group, consisting of Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, called the Masked Marauders, made the album. But the whole thing was fake. Still, fans clamored for the album that never existed.

Berkenstadt also looks at the rumor that the CIA was responsible for the death of Bob Marley. Marley had been wounded by a gunshot during an attack on his home in 1976. Although the incident was never resolved, many feared it was the CIA. This rumor came about because, at the time of that crime, there was major political unrest in Jamaica, and a documentary filmmaker named Carl Colby—the son of former CIA Director William Colby—was living at the residence. Marley refused to have the bullet removed and performed a concert two days later, which made him even more popular. The author found no evidence that the CIA had anything to do with the shooting. And, despite more rumors, the bullet lead in his system didn’t kill the Wailers icon; he died from melanoma skin cancer in 1981.

The relationship between The Beach Boys and Charles Manson is another investigation Berkenstadt takes on. He writes, “This could perhaps be the most challenging rock ‘n’ roll archeology dig to date, given the reluctance and discomfort to the Beach Boys and their inner circle to discuss anything related to this dark Manson-cloud that continues to hang over a group that only wanted to sing about surfing, hot rods and California girls.”

Dennis Wilson, the late Beach Boys co-founder, was at the center of the scandal. Paul Watkins, Manson Family associate, recalled, “At the time, I viewed Dennis as an all-American middle-class surfer kid who suddenly made it rich and didn’t know quite how to handle it. He was a prime target for the (Manson) Family. Charlie Manson selfrighteously played the role of Robin Hood, taking from the rich, namely Dennis, to give to the poor, namely Charlie. He really went to work on Dennis, made him feel guilty for possessing so much wealth, and urged him to renounce it in exchange for a simple communal life based on love: Charlie’s love.” Wilson introduced Manson to a few professional musicians and record-makers, but none of them thought he was talented enough. After Wilson split from Manson, the murders occurred.

Berkenstadt’s research is very in depth and makes this an interesting read.

Research is the reason I have my mom

My mom is incredible. We talk every day. When I learned she had a rare form of breast cancer, I couldn’t imagine my world without her in it.

She went through surgeries, chemotherapy and 30 rounds of radiation. I sent care packages and flew home whenever I could.

Thanks to research supported by the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, targeted therapy was there for her. She had incredible strength and tons of support—but research is the reason she’s with us today.

See more reasons for research and share yours at BCRF.org
