Every time I attend a concert at Festival of Arts, I feel enveloped by beauty and magic. It was especially enchanting during my visit to the Laguna Beach, California, fine art show last month because I timed it on a day when my guests and I could partake in the Art, Jazz, Wine & Chocolate series and also stay for Pageant of the Masters. It was our first experience in the remodeled venue where guitarist Chris Standring was performing with his band comprising Andre Berry on bass, Sergio Gonzalez on drums, and Hans Zermuehlen on keyboards. The architects of the award-winning renovation of the iconic outdoor exhibition space certainly had comfort and coolness in mind when they designed the corner layout of the concert area with canopies over the expanded seating areas and stage. Branches of large eucalyptus trees sway over the perimeter wall and fan the venue with extra shade. And, it was quite refreshing when splashes of ocean breezes helped cool down the air on that hot and humid Thursday. The entire concert area, which can now accommodate approximately 250 people, is concrete. Tiered general admission seating is carved into one side of its perimeter. Reserved seating sections are spread out on two levels and cost an additional $35 per person. We sat at a table on the main level, which is angled to the left side of the stage. The other option is a few steps down, directly in front of the stage, with tables and chairs set up on bright green artificial turf. Concerts are free with Festival of Arts admission ($10 on weekdays, $15 on weekends, with special discounts for children, students and seniors aged 62-plus. Free admission is offered to Laguna Beach residents, children 5 years of age or under and military). Although there are food and beverage vendors onsite, as well as the new Terra Laguna Beach restaurant, picnicking with your own Chris Standring performing during the Art, Jazz, Wine & Chocolate series at Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach, California, on July 19

When the concert, which started at 5:30 p.m., ended at 7:30 p.m., we had nearly an hour to peruse more art exhibits before the curtains of Pageant of the Masters rose at 8:30 p.m. We arrived at the Irvine Bowl, an outdoor amphitheater behind the art show where the Pageant is performed, while the 26 musicians were warming up in the orchestra pit beneath the stage. Soon, the lights dimmed, the orchestra’s curtain closed, and the live Fred Stodder ceramics exhibit at Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach, California narrator began guiding the audience through each piece of the 90-minute theatrical performances where famous works of art come alive onstage. This year’s theme, “UNDER THE SUN,” re-creates the early 20th century’s new generation of impressionists and plein air painters, while honoring Laguna’s own and other artistic pioneers from around the world who left their studios, set up their easels outdoors and became inspired by the natural beauty. This production––featuring intricate sets, makeup and costumes, sophisticated lighting and hundreds of volunteers––mystifies imagination in the magical way works are re-created with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original pieces. And, fun and surprises add to this 85th annual, wondrous, awe-inspiring experience. Although I’ve already checked off these items on my summer must-do list, I still feel a strong need to return a few more times before Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters end Sept. 1, to make this season truly extraordinary. Especially when I see Gregg Karukas and Michael Paulo scheduled to perform on Aug. 2; Jeff Lorber Fusion on Aug. 4; and Lee Ritenour on Aug. 18, in addition to a variety of other bands listed on the Festival of Arts’ daily music schedule. Meanwhile, with a nod to a scene at this year’s Pageant, I can always dream of an Endless Summer!

AUGUST | SEPTEMBER 2018 | 9 basket of goodies is also allowed. We brought in some sandwiches and drinks in a small cooler. And, with our $20 Art, Jazz, Wine & Chocolate admission, we each received three XAN Confections chocolates and three glasses of wine. It was quite the divine alfresco dining experience, and music added the soul-stirring ingredient. Standring’s signature retro-meets-modern-vibes sound, always a pleasure to listen to, was enhanced by the surrounding paintings, sculptures, jewelry, ceramics, glass, photography, watercolors and woodworks. Even the concert section has stunning Marlo Bartels-designed benches and a fountain sculpture. Each is made with various shaped azure and turquoise-hued mosaics, ceramics and tiles on the top, a black and white checkered base, and a bottom row lined in a black and brown pattern. The keyboardist-composer is preparing to write and record a follow-up to her first acoustic album, 2016’s tender, captivating Journey to the Heart And, she plans to have her manager, Bud Harner, co-produce it with her.

“My fans tell me how much my music helped their lives, or how they use my music for work or creating their art. I’ve had a doctor tell me he listens to it while he operates,” Matsui said recently via phone from her home in the Los Angeles area. “I hear so many stories like this from fans, so I realize this is my mission in life, and I really hope that my music helps people. There are so many problems in the world for so many different reasons, and people always tell me my music helps make their lives better. That means so much to me.

“Every day we are learning and evolving, and that is always reflected in my music. We are always growing and changing, so the music is going to change in the same way. I put pressure on myself because my fans are always waiting for the melodies. I believe I have to do my best and give them something beautiful.

She added that it’s very difficult for her to articulate the creative process, not because English is her second language, but because it’s a bit of a mystery to her. It’s just her gift.

Throughout the long interview, Matsui was as open-hearted, empathetic and elegant as her music, as well as good-humored and exceedingly humble.

eiko Matsui’s music has touched the hearts of millions and resonated on multiple levels with fans who are inspired by her lyrical melodies and often wondrous soundscapes. Over the course of her 30-year career and 28 albums, the Japanese keyboardist has established herself as an international performer with her deeply spiritual songs that evoke a sense of wonder and freedom.

I’m so grateful to have such devoted fans, so I don’t want to disappoint.”

“When I play a concert, we all share many emotions together, and there is so much feeling––we are united. It’s a wonderful miracle each time I play. You know, my music is always helping me, too. It’s so fulfilling to know I am bringing happiness to the world.”

“Sometimes I’m inspired by my reflections on my life at the time or what is going on around me, like a sunset, but one time a melody came to me in a dream,” she mused. “So you never know where it’s going to come from, and you can’t limit yourself.

Matsui has been enchanting her fans since 1987 with her first album, A Drop of Water, and she has maintained a dizzying pace as one of the most prolific artists in jazz, releasing an album yearly throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. Over the last decade, her music, while still

“When creating an album, you are trying to express yourself and your inner thoughts the best way you can. For me, it can be a very exciting process. There are infinite possibilities for creation, and I just discover eachMatsuitime.”emphasized that she is always trying to grow with each album and do something different and challenging.

One of the most prominent women in jazz, Matsui reaches across cultures and her lovely, graceful music speaks to people in profound ways. Her power to heal and inspire through song is not lost on the globetrotting instrumentalist, who says she is often overwhelmed by her audience’s emotional response to her work.

The captivating

On Tour

The remarkable Matsui almost dropped out of the music business early in her career when she had the first of her two daughters, but she persevered thanks to the support of her fans.

“I was on Dave Koz’s cruise of the Baltics––it was so beautiful with amazing scenery––but there were almost no women artists, especially headlining, and that’s too bad. I don’t know what to think about it, but I’m happy to be a woman making music. I’ve made 28 albums of all of my own original songs, and I think I’m brave––if I can say that,” said Matsui, who is scheduled to join Koz on his Dave Koz & Friends Christmas tour this year. When she is not recording or touring internationally, Matsui is very active in a variety of charities. She has been involved with the Y-Me Breast Cancer Organization and The Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer, as well as The National Marrow Donor Program. She believes charity work is a very important part of her life and something she is proud to do. “There are so many opportunities to give to charity in the U.S., and being a performer, I was approached by the national marrow donor organization and breast cancer awareness program as well as the U.N. program against hunger in Africa,” she said. “Because I am healthy and a mother, I really wanted to give something back.

“But before I gave birth, I was playing a show. I really wasn’t showing because I wasn’t big––I was working so hard, the baby wasn’t growing, but after the show, two ladies who were sitting close to the stage came over to me and said ‘Don’t quit.’ They knew. An African American lady was in tears, and she held my hand. She said ‘Thank you so much for creating so much beauty.’ So, I saw that as a sign. I learned from my fans that maybe I have something special. And I continued. It’s so wonderful.” Of course, whether to continue a music career or stay home to raise children is only a decision a woman musician has to contemplate.

“The last 10 years, I’m feeling differently. I am much happier, and I’m feeling so much more spirited. You can hear it in the music. I think some of it comes from how my audience has evolved. It inspires me. I’ve been doing this for 30 years, so now when I’m playing shows, I see three generations in the audience.

“There are young people who were not raised on my music but are just discovering it, and some people who were working in the ’80s or ’90s and now have the time to hear my music for the first time, so it’s amazing to me how many people are enjoying what I do now. It makes me happy and affects my energy.”

“When I had my first baby, I thought about quitting my career,” she said. “My mom was a housewife, and I wanted to be a mom like her and be there for my kids when they got home from school.

And, as one of the most accomplished and successful women in all of popular music, Matsui is a role model for all aspiring young women, but the hard-working artist said she is far too busy to even consider the idea. “I’ve never thought about that. I don’t think I’m a role model, but maybe I am,” she said with what may be the understatement of the year before adding, “I did meet young women on cruises who were learning music, and they said they heard my music and wanted to make it themselves. So, I guess I inspire them, but I don’t know if I’m a role model in general. That would be nice if I Recently,am.” Matsui has begun to realize how few women there are in contemporary jazz. “I never thought smooth jazz was so male-dominated until this year. It just never came into my mind, but I realized it when I played a cruise, and the only women headliners were me and Candy Dulfer. When I do collaborations at festivals, I am always surrounded by men.

Aug. www.longbeachjazzfestival.comCalifornia562-424-0013

“When I had the opportunity, I learned about each cause, and I realized I could really contribute with my music, so I did a breast cancer awareness tour and registered as a donor for the bone marrow program. I was told it was very urgent for minorities. I am a minority, so I realized how important it was.” Breast cancer also hit close to home for her. “I lost my elementary school friend to breast cancer––she was only 30 years old,” Matsui lamented. “When I did my charity work, I met many patients and doctors and nurses, and they told me how much impact my work had. That makes you want to do more. Even if you do small things, you can make changes and help others––even save someone’s life.” Matsui’s powerful music and dedication to charities have changed many lives and helped people all around the globe. She believes music is the universal language that speaks to everyone, and she is carrying on the legacy of many of her mentors. “At the beginning of my career, I opened for Miles Davis in 1988. He was so inspiring. Recently, there were so many musicians we lost. Joe Sample, Al Jarreau and George Duke,” she said. “They were legends and always good to me, so I feel while I’m still alive, I feel like I have to do my best to create music and work hard for them and my fans. I’m so grateful to be doing this after so many years. It is such a special thing and brings me great happiness.”

The last time a male musician thought about giving up his career because he was about to become a father was, well, never— it just doesn’t happen.

Dr. Elliot connected with her students by citing the success of former students who faced similar challenges in their homes. She continued to move up, teaching and eventually opening the Community Charter Middle School in 1999, the first charter school in Los HerAngeles.initialendeavor into a charter school system was so rewarding to students and their families that she went on to open nine more schools. With the help of Dr. Ref Rodriguez, the two co-founded Partnerships to Uplift Communities, which connected all her projects. In 2013, she won the Hart Vision Leader of the Year Award.

You have self-improvement plans in the works. Now is the perfect time to start on some of those changes. Don’t let others bring you down. They may not understand how important this is to you. It’s your life, after all.

You’ve been getting some good feedback at the job lately. This might be a good time to double-check some of your processes to make sure everything is getting done correctly. You won’t want to have to go back and admit that some of those kudos were misplaced.

While you’re dreaming of faraway places, someone is going to give you advice you need to stay away from. Bad intentions are behind this advice. Trust yourself to see the reality of the situation, and move on.

You have some information you’ve been dying to share with someone close to you. Make sure you don’t go too over the top with all that positivity. Keep yourself grounded and practical just so expectations don’t go awry.

This is an interesting read, penned by an amazing woman who crafted her own American-dream life, and assists and inspires marginalized kids to do the same.

Scottish-born saxophonist Richard Elliot created much more than just the American dream for himself. Aside from his illustrious career, including being a member of Tower of Power in the 1980s before launching his solo career, he also became a tech guru and a pilot. As a philanthropist, Elliot produces biennial charity concerts benefiting local schools and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. However, success and benevolence in his family aren’t exclusive to him.

You need some help now. Try your best to drum up some assistance, and don’t feel bad if you get a few negative responses. Just remind folks that you are always there for them, and hold no grudges. You’ll get that work done!

Aquarius Jan. 20 - Feb. 18

His sister, Dr. Jacqueline Elliot also made a name for herself by creating the first-ever charter schools in the Los Angeles area. Her new book, “Passionate Warrior: My Charter School Journey,” details her exceptional aptitude to see through stereotypes and into the true nature of her students, who face far greater adversity than the average pupil. The year was 1985. Elliot was in her mid-30s, beginning her second career after leaving the Northeast Valley Health Corp., battling tension at home with her husband and taking care of her dad, who was in failing health. She had picked up her emergency teaching permit after learning about a teacher shortage in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Her hope was to become a high school health teacher. Her bachelor’s degree from California State University, Northridge was in anthropology, giving her the ability to immerse herself in environments unlike her own and to see people and cultures without judgment. She found herself faced with the task of teaching in Spanish, a language she barely knew. She ignored the views of her co-workers who thought their students were bound to a life of drugs, gangs and violence. Elliot found it wasn’t that the students lacked the ability to learn, but that their situations prevented learning.

You’ve been telling folks you will be making some big changes soon.

You are starting to feel super creative with ideas flowing freely. Just remember to figure in the costs for all those projects; you might need to just pick a few. Once you do, have some fun with them and let those ideas of yours fly!

You have some home improvement goals in the works, but make sure you plan appropriately. You don’t want to find yourself turning the situation into a white elephant scenario. You may have to scale back on your wish list. No worries, there is plenty to do.

Virgo Aug. 23 - Sept. 22 You will be joining a group on a venture that looks quite positive. Try not to share too much with others who are not part of that troupe. There is only so much room on this train, and you’ve got the ticket! Be kind about it. Libra Sept. 23 - Oct. 22

Sometimes it’s hard to deal with, but you will soon be getting criticism that you should pay attention to. Treat this as a learning experience, and try even harder to do the right thing. Don’t get in a snit, which can end up making things worse.

You have some tough negotiations coming up soon. Try not to stress too much; just keep to your plan, explain yourself clearly, and listen to others. It will go well as long as everyone can keep calm and concentrate on a good result for all.
