Remembering By Dottie Doyen Ridenour
Listening to Larry Coryell's 11th House “Seven Secrets,” Released June 02, 2017 I’m at first drawn back to a time of dark, smoky venues where a quintet would lay down a river of life in the form of sound. A place in time and space where the essence of life feels distilled, perhaps, into one transcendent note. From Alabama Rhap Corollary and Philly Flash to Dragon's Way, Seven Secrets, and The Dip - side-stepping into Some Funky Stuff, this album deftly weaves the elements with incredible mastery. It all works. 12 | SmoothJazz Magazine
You can hear the lineage of Larry, the Godfather of Jazz Fusion, as he opened doors for the crossover of jazz artists into a larger audience. This rebirth of the Eleventh House is Larry Coryell and son Julian on guitar, Alphonse Mouzon on drums, John Lee on bass and Randy Brecker on trumpet. Here are seven secrets you may not know about Larry Coryell:
“Over the years I hope I’ve become more of a musician and less of a guitarist.” - Larry Coryell

Julian Coryell, Larry Coryell, Randy Brecker, Alphonse Mouzon, John Lee.
Introducing the Eleventh House album (1974): Randy Brecker, Alphonse Mouzon, Larry Coryell, Mike Mandel, Danny Trifan.
1. Opera composer. Larry, aka The Maestro, had a mastery of jazz guitar, but in later years his dream of composing an opera was realized when his opera War and Peace was performed in Russia. “Over the years I hope I’ve become more of a musician and less of a guitarist.” - Larry Coryell 2. Opened for Led Zeppelin. He played with Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Al Dimeola, Eric Clapton, Frank Zappa, Herbie Mann and a mix of other notable musicians. He and his family lived for a time with Carlos Santana. He was listed on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. He was included in the 2018 Grammy Awards

Remembering Lifestyle 3. “Music is the life of our family.” - Murali Coryell. His legacy continues on with the music of son Murali (www.muralicoryell.com, The Coryell Legacy on Vimeo), son Julian who plays for Alanis Morissette (Guardian music video), and wife Tracey (www.traceyland.com). 4. His track “Dream Thing” was originally titled My Cousin Dorothy. He released over 60 solo albums. My first time listening to Larry was in his cousin Dorothy’s living room. He played solo acoustic guitar and even as a 5-year old I was transfixed by his effortless playing.
5. He was born on the Texas gulf coast. Larry was born in Galveston, but then was raised in Washington State. There is an effort to dedicate a statue of him in Galveston. 6. He was a teacher. He loved to share his knowledge. His YouTube tutorials and instructional books on Amazon continue to be an impactful resource. 7. “Seven Secrets” is his final released album, but his final recording is “Barefoot Man” October 26, 2016, which was the evolution of “Barefoot Boy in 1971, where he had come full circle. Seven Secrets was released later (June 02, 2017) to coincide with a planned tour. Larry passed away unexpectedly in February 2017 prior to the tour. The evening before his passing he gave an inspired performance at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York doing what he loved best. Let the music take you…
Concert By: Art Jackson Along with dignitaries, stars and family in attendance Diana Ross opened up the Summer concerts at the Hollywood Bowl with a fireworks of a show. Having the assistance of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and a full choir, it made for an elegant affair. Ms. Ross starts by singing a medley of some of hers and the Supremes hits as the memories became vivid for me. "More Today Than Yesterday," and "You Can't Hurry Love," "It's My Turn," "It's My House," "Touch Me in The Morning," "The Man I Love," "Upside Down" and more. The surprise song that I came away with was when she did "Amazing Grace," my first reaction was Wow! But it was very well done. Other stand outs for me were the hit from Mahogany "Do You Know" "Ain't No Mountain" every time I hear that song it reminds me of a family road trip from Los Angeles to New York in the 70’s and to see her sing it live was just “priceless.” The songfest ended as she delivered the appropriate "Reach Out And Touch" as everyone in the audience Let the music take you… SmoothJazz Magazine | 17
Concert was touched by her. She wore beautiful Bob Mackie gowns as she made two changes during the set each with an variations of ruffles, a train and boa which she discarded aside while effortlessly gliding across the stage. With only a few interactions of conversations with the crowd, she mentioned the orchestra and all the work they put into doing the show, her talented band and the amazing choir that topped it all off. She also thanked all her kids for attending and shared that she broke her ankle while playing with her grandkids. As she jokingly said, “I was doing lots of hand movements” which brought out chuckles from everyone while she gesture with breaststrokes motions. Under the directions of conductor Thomas Wilkins, the evening was flawless and seeing the fireworks with Ms. Ross standing there made it a grand spectacle. Let the music take you…
Concert By: Sheila B. Ross SJM: Mr. Koz, congratulations on this new project, ‘Summer Horns II From A to Z’, currently I am reviewing the CD for www.smoothjazzmag.com. What thoughts go through your mind daily as you move closer to the start of this exciting tour that showcases this project? Dave: It is beginning to JUST NOW come to me! As you know, we have just come off our 2018 Cruise and what a phenomenal time we had at sea. So now, we are all turning our attention to the beginning of the tour and the CD release. These phenomenal players, Gerald Albright, Richard Elliott, Aubrey Logan and Rick Braun, this project has brought us closer together. We’ve all become like family and so we are all working together to make this tour the best ever! SJM: What is one thing about this sequel you feel is so different from the first ‘Summer Horns’ project? Dave: With the first ‘Summer Horns’ project about four years ago, we focused on the alto and tenor saxophones. With this horn section, we incorporate the ‘brass’ sound with Aubrey Logan’s unbelievable talent on the trombone and Rick Braun’s skilled trumpet play. So this sound is even louder as we’ve developed a crew of ace rhythm players. Let the music take you… SmoothJazz Magazine | 21
Concert SJM: Tell me about the selection process. Dave: Well when we first began, “my original list was in the hundreds, we have good-natured arguments during weekly conference calls. We each pitched songs and then tried to get other people on our team.” It was not an easy task as we all got a chance to give our own ideas and input. Over a period of weeks, we managed to get it down to 11 timeless classics. This process also helped us to bond tightly as a team and as family. SJM: What can fans expect when attending a ‘Summer Horns’ concert? Dave: This horn section, we are going to “bring it!” It is loud, fun, classic and so very entertaining! We plan to have fun with it as we entertain the audience! With the new addition of Aubrey Logan on trombone and Rick Braun on Trumpet, we’ve developed a killer horn section! SJM: What is it like having a killer horn section? What does that feel like? Dave: With Aubrey Logan, Gerald Albright, Rick Braun, Richard Elliot and myself, we each allocate our own style of play to the section and because we’re so focused to it, the result it strong, loud, unified, and fun! We Love it! 22| SmoothJazz Magazine

Concert SJM: I found Aubrey Logan flows sensationally with this group, talk to me a little bit about what it was like working with her? Dave: I became acquainted with Aubrey from the Post Modern Jukebox, a YouTube musical collective known for reworking popular music into different genres. Aubrey is delightful to work with! At age 30, she’s the youngest of us all and provides lead vocals for the project. Her trombone execution comes out flawlessly and works super well with the other horns! She is so much fun! SJM: I applaud how the whole group collaborated on the project, each sharing ideas and knowledge of music, especially Mr. John Burks decision to mix Jay-Z’s work, “Roc Boys” with the famous “Take the ‘A’ Train,” did you at this juncture actually name the CD obviously based on this collaboration? Dave: Yes, at the time we were working on “A Train,” someone shared Jay-Z’s work, “Roc Boys” with me and said it had a bunch of horns in it! Our very own, John Burks, CEO of Concord Records learned of our discovery and said, “Maybe the two songs could work together. It would be really funny to go from A to Z.” Thus, yes, this is indeed how the album got its title, “Summer Horns II From A to Z.” SJM: Your decision to work with Frankie Beverly and Maze’s “Before I Let Go” in my opinion is a great choice! How important is this music to the audience? Let the music take you… SmoothJazz Magazine | 23
Concert Dave: Oh Frankie Beverly and Maze, a group that’s been in existence such a long while with such classic feel good R&B music is a necessity for this audience! We are in the audience feel-good business and know exactly how to please them the right way. We applaud this legendary group and pay them honor as much as possible. However, because of the amazing work our horn arrangers, Tom Scott, Greg Adams and Grammy-Winning Gordon Goodwin have done for us, yes indeed, we do have mastered that big band sound on this project! Rick Braun produces this album for us with myself as co-producer. SJM: The beautiful Shelea is new to me! She is gorgeous and R&B star Kenny 24 | SmoothJazz Magazine Let the music take you…

Atlanta’s own award winning Wolf Creek Amphitheater EXPANDED THEIR VOLTAGE Saturday night by a simple flip of a switch to display the hottest ticket on the smooth jazz scene for the summer: The Dave Koz ‘Summer Horns II From A to Z’ Tour. At approximately 8:58 p.m., Wolf Creek Amphitheater’s KILOWATTS OVERLOAD when Grammy Nominated Platinum-Selling American Saxophonist, Dave Koz and his horn-playing friends emerge to the stage! We can’t believe our eyes! Right Before us, glistening in ALL white, we now have Gerald Albright, Richard Elliott, Rick Braun, Aubrey Logan and featuring Adam Hawley. They ALL looking fresh and clean, white and professional, super READY FOR SUMMER and the beach with this eruptive sound! We are all immediately thrilled with what we see and NOW know what’s coming our way! Let the music take you… SmoothJazz Magazine | 27

They ALL stand together! A unified force! A KILLER HORN SECTION! as they play about a two-minute medley of songs to deliver their strength, power and precision to the audience! We absolutely love it! The performance commences with songs from the new CD along with a solo from each artist showcasing their individual talent! It becomes a smooth jazz listener’s dream come true! Their selection turns up the heat with Earth Wind & Fire’s ever popular classic, “Getaway.” It starts out loud!, fast! and funky! with a feel-good R&B sound. With this tune, we get a two for one, with the integration of KC & the Sunshine Band’s, classic “That the Way I Like It.”

Dave’s new delightful and beautiful shining-star discovery, Ms. Aubrey Logan graces us up-close and personal with her vocal talent, musicianship & acrobatic skills (YES! I said acrobatic!) She’s adorable! Loveable! Lively, Let the music take you…
Concert yet strong and she blows so ‘lady-like’! She sings the ever popular vintage classic, “Route 66.” Aubrey is the perfect addition to the show this year with her vocal and brass (Trombone) playing talents! Dave nailed this one! She kicks up her right leg time and again with enthusiasm and stretches her arms out toward the audience. She displays her vocal range beautifully! At the end of this song she raises her right hand and quickly turns five one-handed cart wheels! One after the other! The audience loves it! And Dave yells out! “Now that’s something you don’t normally get at a smooth jazz concert!” Each of the members have shear fun with Stevie Wonder’s 1971 pop release, “If You Really Love Me.” The members collaborate so well. You can see the bond! You can see the family! You can see it! The 1976 hit, “Keep That Same Old Feeling” by the Crusaders comes forth with such elegance and grace, and reminds us all of those times back in that day! We get nothing but good feelings from this as each member comes front and center and blow with class, precision and at times, uniformity! And individually, Gerald plays his new re-make we all loved so well, “Bermuda Nights,” (originally his 1989 Let the music take you… SmoothJazz Magazine | 29
Concert Feature release) off his current new CD release 30.’ This is pure Gerald Albright Gold! Always giving us his very best! Rick serenades his wife with an upbeat tune! His stance is statuesque! Adam, who has been hitting the Billboard charts with several numbers ones from his new CD "Double Visions" was sleek and phenomenal. While Dave took us back to 1999 when he played the very pleasing "Together Again" from his "The Dance" CD. This show review would not be complete if I did not mention one of the most memorable moments of this night! As Mr. Elliot and Ms. Logan really took their time with the thought provoking Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song.” On tenor sax, Elliott is elegant, precise, yet strong. Logan vocally blows the song singing, with the burning question “What about us?” and they both just thrilled us! This is sung by the beautiful Ashling Cole on the album, yet Logan nailed it! This evening we all felt the love they’ve generated together we could feel it with each horn blowing! And we are loving it!

Feature Lifestyle - Fashion By: Alise Levine This year’s Brian Culbertson’s Napa Valley Jazz festival was one of the best festivals I have attended in the past years. The combination of the venues, the food/wine and of course the incredible music made this an amazing weekend for Jazz music lovers. The event took place over four days, with events such as afternoon “wine downs,” 4 big concerts at 2 main venues, and several after parties.
Conversation
On both Thursday and Friday afternoon- I really enjoyed what are called “wine down” events. They took place at the host hotel – the Westin Napa Valley. There were about 15 wineries present each day -handing out free tastes of many of Napa Valley’s finest wines, and some amazing live concerts by some of the top saxophone players in the game today. Marcus Anderson put on a great show Thursday – including some music by Prince, and Marqueal Jordan and Jazmin Ghent entertained us Friday with their vocals and amazing saxophone music that made everyone get up and dance!! Thursday evening was an AMAZING show at the Lincoln Theater – it featured Jonathan Butler opening up the show with his unique guitar and vocal style. Then, the highlight of the whole weekend for me was the Brian Culbertson “Colors of Love” show. Brian and his band were absolutely phenomenal and entertaining to say the least. He wanted the Cavs to win. The band Friday night was the Al McKay AllStars who performed the music of the legendary band – EARTH WIND & FIRE with both Sinbad and Brian joining in. They had us singing and dancing in our seats. What a great night of comedy and music.

Feature Festivals I had a chance to interview Brian Culbertson after the weekend and asked him some questions about his tour, his charity work, and the future. I learned so much about this amazing musician and he was one of the nicest people you could ever meet!! Here are some excerpts from my interview: The money that was raised at the festival during the charity auction Friday night, goes to the Grammy Foundation. It helps provide for music education in public schools and 100% of the profits from this event go to the kids. The staff donates their time for this and the Grammy foundation collects the money directly. Each year, over the past 7 years – they have raised approximately 50K per year for this wonderful cause. I asked Brian what the highlight of the weekend was for him and he said – there were 2. 1st was when Eric Darius performed impromptu at the after party Saturday night and debuted a new song of his. He performed on his Sax on the dance floor amongst the crowd and he also was a guest DJ. The other highlight Brian said- was of course when he performed his “Color of Love” show Thursday night. It was a special vibrant show and had a lot of color, lights and special effects. The music was fantastic!!
Let the music take you… SmoothJazz Magazine | 41
Lifestyle Sports Feature Brian said the festival has grown a lot over the past few years. The shows on Saturday and Sunday are at a large outdoor amphitheater. He does feel though it is getting away from the vibe and intimacy he likes, and he would like to scale it back down somewhat, to shows the size of the Lincoln theater venue in the future years. He likes about a 1200 seat venue to keep it intimate -- so he can better interact with ALL the attendee's and meet as many people as possible. He added a new Jazz festival this year and it will be in Chicago – the weekend of September 13-16. In the future, Brian looks forward to more Jazz get-a-way events at great destinations worldwide. He wants to have a good time with his fans and be in intimate settings where he can interact with the attendees. He feels the large festivals are too big and wants to keep it smaller for his events. He is going to start another tour in the spring of 2020 and will be on a tour bus driving around the country to perform. 42| SmoothJazz Magazine
Let the music take you‌
Lifestyle Sports Feature Brian also said his Color of Love tour was his favorite tour on the road so far. The full show is 2.5 hours long. He was able to do most of it at the Napa Jazz festival this year. He said his next tour will be completely different, and his fans are the best and always continue to support him throughout the years!! I thanked him for his time and I personally look forward to seeing him perform again soon!!!

On this Memorial Day Weekend, saxophonist Michal Paulo has created the Temecula Wine & Jazz Music Festival which is a region within Riverside County about an hour and a half east of Los Angeles. With media credentials in hand, a busy Michael can be spotted backstage, on stage, talking to artists, talking to the sound crew as he not only wears the hat of an artist but also the hat of Promoter for this event. So before he gets anymore busier, I got a chance to talk with him about his new CD, Family, Friends and more out by the lake on this beautiful day. Speaking of which, that is the title of his new CD “Beautiful Day” which has been 46| SmoothJazz Magazine

Feature Michael stated that “at this point in my career, it is about doing songs that I love to do, so half of the record are covers of some of my favorite songs and of artists that I love.” So there are 6 tracks of cover that you will surely love his compositions too, there is a tribute to Al Jarreau, Grover Washington Jr., “Mr. Magic,” Gato Barbieri “Europa,” Sting’s “Fragile,” James Taylor “You Got A Friend” and “Your Song” by Elton John. So these are songs that I have performed countless times live but never recorded.” “As for the rest of the CD, some friends contributed in major ways as on the track “Who You Gonna Call” was helped by good friend Ray Parker Jr. who laid down some funky licks, and the single has been the #1 most added song on Billboard and other charts. Then there is Grammy Winner Paul Brown, who actually mixed the CD, produced a couple of the songs and even played guitar on it, so it was phenomenal to have him be apart of it. Other notable friends included Peter White, whom we have been touring together for almost 20 years, then David Benoit who was one of the artists I started playing within the 80’s, Paul Jackson Jr and Kimo Corwell of Hiroshima. “Being able to call up your talented friends and to ask to help out and they all did and did it for nothing makes the cover of James Taylor “You Got A Friend” even more special for me that is priceless.” PAUL BROWN Let the music take you… SmoothJazz Magazine | 47
Feature As Michael also stated “I wrote 7 new songs, that I chose to do with nice melodies and write about things that have inspired my life, I am going to be a grandfather and the title track Beautiful Day, I wrote about that, it was a beautiful day that I found out I was going to be a grandparent. Then there is a song about my dog called “Keiko’s Groove.” Michael has been keeping busy in between recordings with the production company Apaulo Productions for the last 15 to 20 years but playing music is still the most gratifying for him. So with his new record, his goal is to do more playing and less producing as he is going back to his roots. Feature With the help of his daughters being apart of the production company keeps it a family affair but the ROCK that keeps it all together is Terri, Michael’s wife. As he puts it, “I am the guy that comes up with all these crazy ideas, let's do this jazz festival or this concert series and she is the one that takes over and puts it all together and makes it all happens which makes for a good team. On a side note, it was my understanding that the VIP tickets for this event sold out in a few days of the announcement, so the production company must be doing something right. I wanted to ask Michael a non-musical question and his response was “priceless.” What is your view of Donald Trump, our President? And what a reaction I got! Michael burst in a big laugh and then he says “The laugh says it all! After composing himself, he stated “on a serious note, I think its very unfortunate. My life is built on treating others well and with respect, having morality and unfortunately, we do not have a President like that and it's very sad, very sad.” So on that note, it was time to listen to some live music. Today some of the musical friends joining Michael was Grammy Winner Gregg Karukas and then Gail Jhonson, Blake Aaron, Kimaya and all the way from Japan saxophonist Kanzaki among other artists. By mentioning the name “Tower Of Power” brings out such strong fan reactions from across the country. The Oakland base group also gets the love at home during the NBA Playoffs, at the breaks in the game the music of Tower of Power is played, from “Oakland Strokes,” “Squib Cakes,” to “What is Hip,” Even during an Oakland A’s games a home run is celebrated with “Oakland Strokes.” But it is not just a sports thing with the city by the bay, with the release of their new CD “Soul Side of Town” the band was also honored with a key to the City for their 50th Anniversary. And not to be outdone in Southern California, TOP headlined the last night of the Playboy Jazz Festival/ So before their show, Emilio Castillo founder of the band took some time to sit down and interview while backstage. Feature Lifestyle Emilio: I don’t know, I have not tried it yet. (laughing) But it was a lovely day getting the proclamation in front of city hall and performing in the amphitheater so it was really a memorable day. SJM: How did the tile “Soul Side of Town” come about? Emilio: Our band loves food, and generally when we go to a new town we are looking for good Bar-Be-Que joints and Soul Food places and that’s the Soul Side of Town. (laughing) I wrote it with Leo Saxton in New York City, and since I had the hook and chord we just sat down and wrote the story to it. Then when trying to come up with a name for the record, we had a bunch of different titles but that one stood out. SJM: Let’s talk collaborations, naturally we first think of Lenny Williams when we think of TOP, so tell us how your new lead singer came to be? Emilio: We had a long relationship with this one singer Larry Braggs for 13 years and he did a couple of albums with us, then he left wanting to do a solo career and it didn’t work out the way he wanted but he got some help from our house mixer to get the gig with the temptation and he is doing quite well. And then we got a guy name Ray Green and he was really good and Carlos Santana love him too and offered him twice the money and half the work, and no one could blame him for taking that. But unfortunately for us, he had already done half the album and we had 28 songs and only 2 months to do the album and find a new singer. So I put the word out to friends and looked at a lot of Youtube videos and we found this Let the music take you… SmoothJazz Magazine | 53

And when I C heard it, I wasn’t really sure but it was good T enough to give him an audition, and I audition U T two other guys and he was the one we decided S to go with. And even then it took him a little while to work in, as he wasn’t quite the learner like Ray Green was but once he got it, about two and a half months in he just owns it now! So for all the tracks that had not been finished, we put him on those and then started to replace him on some of the tracks that Ray Green did because the album was due so we got him singing some and Ray singing some and Marcus singing more and I sing a few leads too. As I usually sing lead on one song per album but on this one I sing on quite a few tracks as well. SJM: How would you sum up the Tower of Power sound? Some of it is R&B, Jazz, Funk and you call it what? Emilio: I called Tower of Power a “Soul” band. Some people call it a Funk band, but Funk is a very small part of Soul music. Soul music has Funk in it, like James Brown, but it also has beautiful love song, ballads that rings your heart out like a rag, then its got the finger-poppin' shuffles and medium tempo like Earth, Wind & Fire and that’s Soul music its music that moves you emotionally so for us to say we are a jazz band or a funk band that stuff is in the sound so what we are really is a Soul Band. 54| SmoothJazz Magazine

Feature SJM: Are there any surprises for us tonight at the Playboy Jazz Festival? Emilio: There is a surprise, I was thinking about it earlier in the week and thought my old trumpet player lives here Greg Adams, he was our horn arranger for years and he has his own band now called East Bay Soul and I thought, I should call up Greg and see if he wants to sit in because he took the very famous solo on “So Very Hard To Go,” and on “What Is Hip” and those are the very two last songs of the set. Feature CD Review By: Avzal Ismail Stanley Clarke..repeat after me STANLEY CLARKE!!!! What does one say about the innovator, Bassmaster, composer, arranger, bandleader, member of Return To Forever and one of the greatest bassists of all time? The name conjures up images of mythical proportions. The one residing on Mount Olympus among the pantheon of the Gods of the Bass. I first heard Stanley on the iconic Light as a Feather album as a 15-year-old back in the seventies so I have been a fan of his and Chick Corea ever since. Almost five decades later and Stanley shows why he is still untouchable on both electric and acoustic bass with his latest album where he wields his instrument and guides his band like a true master with a cornucopia of fusion, funk, jazz, backbeats, Bach cello suites and more. Helping Stanley bring his vision to fruition aside from his incredibly versatile young band are the likes of rapper and beatboxer Doug E Fresh and trumpet legend Mark Isham. The music was written during a rather eventful European tour where sometimes adversity actually turns into a blessing in disguise. The Message brings forward an overwhelming sense of power, heart and a level of astonishing musicianship and compositional savvy. 62| SmoothJazz Magazine
Let the music take you‌
Feature CD Review Upon multiple listening’s to the album one can only agree that the virtuosity displayed by his young band is truly astounding, pushing the boundaries of musicianship into the stratosphere. In 2015 Clarke brought this astounding band consisting of Beka Gochiasvili and Cameron Graves on keyboards and Mike Mitchell on drums with Stanley keeping it all together as the anchor. When an explosion in Tunisia prevented the band from continuing their tour (which was where they were headed next) they opted to stay on in Paris and to make use of that time writing new material. The Message opens with an homage to several great friends that Clarke has lost in the last few years including George Duke, Al Jarreau, Tom Petty, “Ndugu” Chancler and Prince. Clarke slaps out a funky riff for “And Ya Know We’re Missing You” while beatboxer Doug E. Fresh lays down a solid beat. A rare pairing that just works. The opening “After the Cosmic Rain/Dance of the Planetary Prince” is a reflection Clarke’s career in a nutshell. The basis of the tune was written in the early ‘70s for Return to Forever, but this time the keyboardist is Cameron Graves. The young keyboardist, a member of the West Coast Get Down phenomenon, has toured with Clarke for a number of years. His sizzling keyboard work is the focal point of the performance. Let the music take you… SmoothJazz Magazine | 63
Feature CD Review Amid the whirlwind of drum and bass on “The Rugged Truth” is Beka Gochiashvili, a native of Tbilisi, Georgia, who has toured with Clarke for the past five years. His piano work on this piece holds an endless combination of ideas and impeccable technique integrating seamlessly with Graves’ supporting keyboard work. Gochiashvili is an award-winning prodigy and has already performed with many of the greats of our time. He was brought to the US in 2008 with the help of Condoleezza Rice, to New York to participate in auditions at Juilliard and the Manhattan School of Music. As expected, he was accepted in both schools. He is one of the most exciting young keyboardists today with a flawless technique and a musical maturity that far surpasses his youth. The recognizable voice of Steve Blum narrates “Combat Continuum,” a cosmic fusion fantasy. Powerhouse, young Texan drummer Mike Mitchell stands out as a driving force on this album and in the band. “If he continues down this path, he could very easily be a Tony Williams or Elvin Jones,” says Clarke. “The Message” and Bach’s “Cello Suite, No. 1” are two sides of the same coin for Clarke, showing his virtuosity with both with the electric and acoustic bass with a technique and feel that is uniquely his. In his own words “The Bach cello suite is like a serious thing to attempt. It’s a hard piece. I do it in the same key as the cello. I don’t change it to suit the bass or make it easier. I worked out the fingering and I’m just trying to make it sound pretty.” 64| SmoothJazz Magazine
Let the music take you…
Feature CD Review The slow groove of “Lost In A World” is a duet between vocalists Skyler Kole and Trevor Wesley. Tight harmonies and Gochiashvili’s dreamy piano carry the tune on a cloud while “Alternative Facts” burns that same piano to ashes. The band is playful but centered and Beka Gochiashvili once again shows off his acoustic chops with focus and, control. “The Legend of Abbas and the Sacred Talisman” is a meditation from Clarke on upright bass with Beka on piano. They weave together effortlessly on the same wavelength reflecting mutual respect and admiration. The warmth and musicianship is undeniable as the ship points the way home to “Enzo’s Theme,” a track from the European session bolstered by the additions of trumpeter Mark Isham and saxophonist Doug Webb. The Message is unmistakably all Stanley Clarke. Five decades of unsurpassed bass mastery doesn’t come easy. Couple this with the youthful energy of his young band and one finds him digging deeply from his bag of goodies to deliver. This is a worthy album for any purveyor of great music and is. without doubt, a worthy addition to your collection to be savored over and over again.

CD Review Festivals By: Sherelle Smith This is an unbelievable CD! Each song is so masterfully arranged! What Marcus Miller has done with "Laid Back" is turn it into a state of being with every song. The only word I can think of is "unity." Every song is a flowing and skilled collaboration between composer, musician, and vocalist...amazing! The first cut, "Trip Trap" had a wonderful bass melody (which is not easy to do) It grabbed me out of the gate and is a great start to a musical experience. "Que Sera, Sera" is a bluesy, churchy, melodic waltz, Louisiana-Style! Selah Sue kills the vocals on this! Remember her name. I loved every song in this CD but this may be my favorite...decisions! Another favorite was, Sumblimity "Bunny's Dream" featuring Jonathan Butler. I felt like I was walking the Sahara at sunset. "7T's" has Marcus playing bass like Jimi Hendrix played lead guitar! The trombone solo on this is tremendous! Trombone Shorty leading the way! Brian Culbertson also played trombone on this project. On "No Limit," when I heard the Moog Synthesizer, I knew it had to be Larry Dunn Let the music take you‌ SmoothJazz Magazine | 67
CD Review famously know ex-member of EW&F and it was! Percussion rules on this song with everything including finger snaps and the 1/2 step bass melody blew me away! So original! "Someone to Love" was a skilled, soft interchange between bass, vocalist and tender piano. Marcus uses the higher registers of his bass so beautifully here. I was in awe of Marcus Miller's skill to ebb and flow wherever needed throughout the entire CD. Remarkable! Every song is worth listening to through the very end and then over again. I promise you that you'll find something new and amazing to hear every time! I have no doubt that once in your collection, “Laid Back" will become a part of you, moving you in so many different ways. I highly recommend getting this CD as soon as you can…you won't regret it!

ne of the perks of writing for a magazine such as Smooth Jazz Magazine is that one gets to listen to new music and one discovers new artists regularly often with pleasantly surprising results. One such artist recently introduced to me is Danish – American contemporary saxophonist Michael Lington by way of his latest offering “Silver Lining.” In the mold of contemporaries such as David Sanborn, Boney James and Dave Koz, Lington carries the tradition of smooth, contemporary jazz with more than a touch of soul, funk and R&B and a huge helping of sheer class along the way. Lington has to date released 10 solo albums from which 23 singles have placed on both the Billboard and R&R contemporary jazz radio charts and one listen through this album clearly shows why. He has also collaborated with musicians as varied as Michael Bolton, Ryan Shaw, 70 | SmoothJazz Magazine Let the music take you…

His 10th album Silver Lining hits the shelves on June 8th on Copenhagen Music. This album is a follow up to his critically acclaimed 2016 release “Second Nature.” The lead off track “City Life” also the first single has already been placed at #2 in its first week on the contemporary / smooth jazz radio charts. This track features Eurythmics guitarist Dave Stewart. This album was co-written with Barry Eastmond who also features on keyboards on all of the tracks. Other luminaries on this album include the likes of Paul Jackson Jr, Ray Parker Jr, Freddie Washington, Alex Al, Lenny Castro and Teddy Campbell among others. Great horn arrangements, tight in the pocket grooves and solid musicianship are among the hallmarks of this fine album. Festivals CD Review Silver Lining was recorded mostly live with minimal if any overdubs at several studios in as diverse locations as L.A. and Memphis. I particularly liked the hard hitting “M-Funk” featuring Ray Parker Jr., and “Can’t Say Goodbye.” With the variety and great grooves on offer, this album really is good enough to enjoy on a long open road or while relaxing at home. Of course when my 95 year old mom starts dancing then you have to know that there’s magic in the air. Shades of Al Green, Tower of Power the old CTI jazz records (in his own words) are all evident on this very fine musical offering. Lington has a rich, clean tone and his virtuosity on his instrument is evident throughout this album. Amply backed by some of the finest musicians around, this album is worth having for those long warm summer jazz days, or those long cold winter’s nights around the fireplace. Ever seeking to evolve as he puts it, Silver Lining is both a culmination of all the musical places he has been as well as a taste of where he is headed as one of the great contemporary sax talents carrying the mantle where others may leave off. Look out for a Michael Lington concert in your town and catch this brilliant musician if you can. A worthy addition to the contemporary, soulful. R&B infused smooth jazz sounds of today. 72| SmoothJazz Magazine

Greg Adams & East Bay Soul Greg Vail
The name Greg Adams may not immediately strike a chord, but chances are you are very familiar with his musical pedigree. As a founding member of Tower of Power, their musical Darryl F. Walker prowess swept across Pop, Dwayne “Smitty” Funk, Jazz and Soul music. The horn section of TOP rivaled great horn sections such as the Phoenix Horns, the Seawind Horns, and Chicago’s horn section. Since then, he has worked Herman Matthews with legendary artists ranging Johnnie Bamont from Ray Charles to Raphael Saadiq. His latest endeavor has been leading the collective known as East Bay Soul. They are now back with their fourth album entitled “Conversation,” as Adams believes that music truly is a language. There are plenty of grooves throughout this album to keep you up on your feet. “Look Book” is the opening cut, and Dwayne “Smitty” Smith is doing his best to 74| SmoothJazz Magazine

CD Review keep the funk alive with his work on the bass. His interplay with Adams on the trumpet drives the melody.

“Possibilities” is full of soul and benefits from a great melody that gives an opportunity for the entire band to showcase their talents. One of my favorites from the project is “Send,” as Adams Johnny Sandoval Kay-Ta Matsuno flugelhorn is put up front, but is again anchored by Smith on bass, and Milo on keys. It’s more of a jazz vibe, but does not lose one ounce of the groove! When Adams takes his foot off the gas, the results are still stellar. The title track of this album is a great song to relax to, as he and Herman Matthews on drums create the breezy atmosphere. “Our Love Devine” is one of a handful of vocal tracks on the album, with Darryl Walker being given the opportunity to deliver a soulful lead performance. “Tiger Beat” is a mid-tempo cut that stays in the pocket but delivers with strong percussion and horns. The album’s closing song, a cover of Otis Redding’s “Try a Little Tenderness,” is wrapped in a luscious arrangement of horns, piano and percussion. The great thing about music is that it’s a shared experience where everyone can give their opinion and feelings on what they have heard. After listening to Greg Adams and East Bay Soul’s latest musical statement, I’m very confident that the Conversation that everyone will have around it will be a great one, a lively one, and a positive one. CD Review By: Carl Wayne Wesley The new CD by Robert Miller and Project Grand Slam gives us “Trippin,’ it has something for everyone’s taste. With a variety of 11 tracks, I decided to showcase several of my top selections. “Tripping” blends the sound of Steely Dan, Jamaican Funk, and Smooth Jazz into a delightful ear pleasing and soul shaking experience that is sure to please the most finicky listener. This light shuffle is infused with just the right amount of instrumental spice that will have you pushing rewind to keep that same old feeling. This is a soulful experience you don’t wanna miss! “No No No” This modern Pop Party Rock tune is a crossover for the Blake Shelton crowd. This song is sure to find a home on the local pop or modern country radio station. This song will do very well on the charts with a re-mix that shortens the introduction to eight bars, and takes out the saxophone solo and saves that energy for the live performances. The lyrics empower the audience. Sure to be a party crowd pleaser. Photo By: John R. Wisdom

CD Review “Lament” This modern Folk Rock song is well written with a beautiful haunting melody that takes the listener on an emotional journey. The theme is a motif that is ostinato like that continues throughout the song and gets well developed with the supporting instrumental solos. This song is a keeper. “Country Drive” is the perfect tune for cruising down that county road with the top down and the radio up. This is the perfect TGIF tune if you’re just leaving work. If kicked back in your favorite chair, close your eyes and you can feel the wind on your face as it whisks you through a soulful country side. The grove will keep your pedal to the metal on your country drive. “Everyone Swears” defines a style I will call Smooth Fusion which has yet to be identified is a genre. With all the elements of Funk Jazz, it brings together fusion from the late 70s’ and the smooth jazz format of today. If you like to try alternative flavors in your Kool – Aid, this will spark you curiosity. This is a well written composition with a sweet and tart overtone. “1972” takes you back to the era when Billy Preston and the Clavinet reigned supreme with “Will It Go Round In Circles” at the top of the charts. The bassline is reminiscent of “I like To Party” by the Black Birds out of Howard University, sprinkled with the saxophone style of The Average White Band, and glazed with progressive changes that moves through the bridge back to tonic. The entire band is well studied and it reflects in Let the music take you… SmoothJazz Magazine | 81
CD Review their musicianship. The grove is solid and funky 70s’. This CD has great moments in regard to musicianship, creativity and experimentation. More than half of the tunes are worth taking your time to appreciate the merging of different genres to create a variety of single compositions. The best trait about this CD is its crossover appeal. You can find a tune to fit just about any occasion. “You Stated Something” is a Pop Rock Tune with a fresh young fun sound. “Country Drive” literally speaks for itself. “I Can’t Explain” is one of the best alternative rock songs written in a very long time. “March of the Diplomats” This alternative jazz tune sets an ambiance for contemplation. I decided to showcase six of my top selections. “Is That The Best You Can Do?” Once again, the Jedi Master of the Bass, Brian Bromberg, has delivered a flawless soulful funky performance 2nd to none! Every musician on this album is laying where they should be. If you ain’t a fan of the Bass; you will be. This tune is so “nasty,” I think the Board of Health has an APB out for him and his posse, because they’re just that filthy! “Minneapolis “ combines Sly Stone, Prince, and Morris Day to create the ultimate grove. The infectious drive will have you patting your foot and begging for more. With all the adrenalin rush of a roller coaster, hold on tight; this tune is lit! “Thicker Than Water “ Brian plays a sultry melody with the sax on this smooth jazz masterpiece. Brian showcases his musicianship as he puts you in a relaxed sentimental mood. If you’re planning to spend time with that special someone, or have invited friends over for a get together, this is a good tune to break the ice. This tune has mellowed like a smooth glass of vino. It isn’t often that you think of the Bass as the lead instrument, however, this composition proves it can be done big time!

Concert CD Review “Coupe Deville “ Brian puts you in the driver’s seat of his fully loaded Coupe Deville Bass. There are so many different colors to choose from to satisfy your ears pallet. From the fantastic rhythm section to the magnificent winds and smooth progressions, you can’t lose with this one. This is smooth jazz the way it should be played. “Changes” This tune takes you soaring high above an imaginary world with an endless melodic wind that taunts you to fly ever higher. Brian's creativity empowers the listener to explore and appreciate the different colors of music, while simultaneously appealing to your outer and inner emotions. “Trials and Tribulations” This tune defines faith and perseverance . Brian brings the bass life to tell a story that can relate to anyone who has faced challenges and continues to believe in them. You could place your own words to the melody and tell your own story or someone else’s. The tensions used are well placed to supports the melodic melody throughout the entire composition. A genius at work! Once again, the Jedi Master of the Bass, Brian Bromberg, has delivered a flawless soulful funky performance 2nd to none! The music paints so many pictures, and there are plenty to view in this musical art gallery. Grammy material here!

Festival By: Ronda Dixon The 40th Anniversary of the iconic playboy jazz Festival kicked up to a beautiful sunny day at the Hollywood bowl. The weather showed up and showed out after weeks of June gloom. The atmosphere was very chill and congenial as people shared food and wine and enjoyed the show. Columbian group Monsieur Perine with lead singer Catalina Garcia kicked off the show with South American Bosa Nova and Rumba rhythms. She had a sensuous dance that showed off her legs in her traditional outfit. The AfroColombian rhythms were infectious.
Matthew Whitaker a 17 year old blind phenom which would make him the first artist born in the 21st century to grace the Playboy Jazz Festival stage at the Hollywood Bowl. Position- ed in between a Steinway grand piano and a Hammond B3, he and his fellow band members Edward Morcaldi III on bass and Sipho Kunene on drums delivered and medley of R&B hits from Stevie Wonder to Earth, Wind & Fire. Matthew definitely felt the crowd who appreciated his artistry. 92| SmoothJazz Magazine

Festival Daymé Arocena was next. It was her début in the United States. She brought her Afro Cuban roots and the Santeria religion spiritual which is like gospel music in the African American Church. She wore traditional Santeria white outfit. She danced the Rumba and tried to get the audience out of their seats but it was early in the day and not enough champagne and wine had been imbibed to get the crowd to let loose, so with the help of George Lopez and a gentle with audience participation made for some good entertainment to her song “Don’t Unplug From Me.” The Miles Electric Band lead by Jeremy Pelt, on trumpet pays homage to the great Miles Davis who created classis in the ’60s and ’70s, with “A Tribute to Jack Johnson,” “In a Silent Way” and the renowned “Bitches Brew.” After their set, the band performed while a video tribute of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, who died last year. With a brief intro by his son Conner along with George Lopez encouraging the crowd to raise up the peace sign in unison as tonight they represent the bunny ears paying homage in spirit to Hugh Hefner .

Festival A crowd favorite, “Parlor Social” lead by, Dessy Di Lauro and Ric’ key Pageot gave us a catchy Hep Cat vibe from bygone days. There was a 16 piece ensemble of instrumentation, vocals and dancers all dressed in black reminiscent of the Cotton Club that ended with tap dancers as the finale that was a great addition. Throughout the set, they added their own twist from jazzy to hip hop, that left you toe tapping and humming to songs that are older than your grandmother “Sweet Georgia Brown” and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell on You.” This will be a returned performance in years to come. Kneebody, a band that has been together for 17 years did a rousing cover of Rihanna song “Work, Work, Work.” And from their 2017 CD Anti Hero “For The Fallen” has a very lovely smooth jazz feel. The new project the band is working on over the last week is a CD of covers; which they have never recorded before so we got to hear new material that has never been heard before. Festival “The Legendary Count Basie Band” played Count Basie Power invoking the energy and power of The Great Count Basie. — the orchestra still featured members who actually played with him. Their set paid homage to the legendary singer Joe Williams, who would have Speaking of been 100 this year with their big“timeless,” always gest hit “April in Paris” and from seen in a suit and over 80 years ago The Count sigtie day or night on nature song “One O’Clock Jump.” stage, Mr. Lewis 83 Just timeless! was met with a thunderous applause as the trademark rotating stage brought him front and center. The quintet played familiar tunes such as the Beatles “Here, There and Everywhere,” Dionne Warwick’s “Betcha By Golly Wow,” and Stevie Wonder “Living for the City” that kept the crowd thoroughly engaged. Even still Mr. Lewis toyed with us asking the crowd if they were jazz fans and when they erupted with the first bars of “Sun Goddess” he admitted that they were fans. For those unaware, most people think of Sun Goddess as a EW& Fire tune. But it was first recorded in 1976 by a young Maurice White who was a member of Ramsey’s band as the drummer. As the maestro explained, “Maurice was saying that the song was missing something so he eventually added the Way-o to the lyrics and the rest is history.” So the audience participated by singing that chorus line that thrilled Mr. Lewis. Another Maurice written tune was played entitled “Tequila Mockingbird.” “The In-Crowd,” a 1960’s hit that reached to #5 on the pop charts kept the love affair with Mr. Lewis in great spirit. 98 | SmoothJazz Magazine
