Introducing

Smooth Jazz Es ist soweit: Die Werkstattbühne des Bregenzer Festspielhauses hat ihren Vorhang geöffnet für die Europapremiere des 1st annual Smooth Jazz Festival. In den nächsten beiden Tagen präsentiert Veranstalter smooth entertainment gemeinsam mit Klassik Radio einen „Künstler“, dessen umfassendes Repertoire hierzulande leider noch etwas „verkannt” wird: Smooth Jazz.

Smooth Jazz ist in Deutschland und Europa noch ziemlich unbekannt – zumindest als Begriff. Falls heute Gäste unter Ihnen sind, die nach Bregenz gereist sind, in der Annahme, nun ein tolles Jazz-Konzert zu genießen, müssen wir Sie enttäuschen. Keine Sorge: Sie werden ein tolles Konzert genießen – allerdings wird es kein „Jazz“ sein, den Sie hören. Zumindest nicht im herkömmlichen Sinn, denn Smooth Jazz ist mehr: Es ist harmonisch fließender Sound, getragen von sanften Rhythmen und geprägt durch eine Vielzahl von Klangschattierungen. Es ist ein Hauch von Soul, ein Hauch von R’n’B, auch ein Hauch von modernem Jazz. Es ist feinste Lounge-Musik, quasi die Playlist erfolgreicher Compilations wie Café del Mar oder Buddha Bar, in ebenso lebendigen Facetten wie sie das bunte Programm des Festivals verspricht.

Kennen Sie beispielsweise Peter White? Ein hervorragender Gitarrist, der seine Opfer gerne mit „Nylon fesselt“. Oder Gabin? Zwei Italiener, die extrem süchtig machende Klänge einsetzen. Vorsicht Tanzmuffel: Sie werden hart ankämpfen müssen gegen den Sog der Tanzfläche! Ganz gefährlich ist aber auch Candy Dulfer – der hierzulande wohl bekannteste Smooth-Jazz-Star: She’s got the looks that kill. Ladies: Halten Sie Ihre Herren fest!

Aber diese drei Namen repräsentieren nur einen kleinen Ausschnitt aus dem Programm, das wir für Sie zusammengestellt haben. Wir haben noch viele andere musikalische Fesslungskünstler engagiert, die Ihnen die Musikrichtung Smooth Jazz in all ihren Facetten näher bringen werden. The time has come: the studio theatre of the Bregenz Festival Hall has raised the curtain for the European premiere of the 1st Annual Smooth Jazz Festival.

In the two days to come, the organizing company smooth entertainment, in cooperation with Klassik Radio, will present an “artist” whose extensive repertoire has, unfortunately, not been recognized yet in this country: Smooth Jazz.

Smooth Jazz is still fairly unknown in Germany and Europe – or, at least the term is. If there are some guests among you who have made the trip to Bregenz hoping to enjoy a great Jazz concert, we will have to disappoint you. But don`t worry: you will be enjoying a great concert, only it won`t be Jazz that you will be hearing. At least not in the standard sense of the word, because Smooth Jazz is more: it is harmonious sound, floating around soft rythms and characterised by its wide range of sound shades. There is a touch of Soul, a touch of R&B, and a touch of modern Jazz, too. It is lounge-music at its best, it is the playlist of successful compilations like Café del Mar or Buddha Bar, in facets just as lively as the colourful Festival programme promises.

Have you ever heard of Peter White, for example?

An excellent guitarist, who likes to tantalise his “victims” by “enchaining them with nylon”. Or Gabin?

Two Italians who use extremely addictive sounds.

And: beware dancing sourpusses: You will have to put up a good fight against the pull of the dance floor! Candy Dulfer is especially dangerous, too – probably the best-known Smooth-Jazz-star here: She`s got the looks that kill. Ladies: hold on to your gentlemen.

Still, these three names only represent a small fraction of the programme which we have put together for your enjoyment. It includes many more gripping artists, who will show you, in all their facets, what Smooth Jazz really is. We present the complete Festival line-up in our magazine. Freaky Swinganizers Das Duo Gabin stammt nicht, wie es der Name vermuten lassen könnte, aus Frankreich, nein, Italien ist ihre Heimat. Hinter dem Pseudonym stecken die Musiker Massimo Bottini und Filippo Clary. Und wer hinter dem Bandnamen einen Bezug zu Jean Gabin, der Koryphäe des französischen Kinos vermutet, liegt richtig, denn angeblich haben sie den prägnanten Namen für ihr Projekt „ausgeliehen“, wohlwissend, dass er für Stil, Persönlichkeit und einen markanten Charakter steht. Der Musik nähern sich die beiden aus zwei unterschiedlichen Richtungen. Während Clary in Rom als DJ bekannt ist und hier das Nachtleben rockt, treibt Bottini als Jazz-Bassist sein Unwesen und darf sich Kooperationen mit bekannten Jazz-Größen wie Billy Cobham und John Scofield ans Revers heften. Ihre gemeinsame musikalische Vision trifft sich mit Gabin irgendwo in der Mitte. Einflüsse aus Jazz und Soul treffen auf Downbeat-Sounds und Latin-Rhythms. Dezent eingesetzte synthetische Elemente geben dem leckeren Musikcocktail den nötigen Drive.

Angefangen hat alles mit dem bekannten Duke Ellington-Song „It don’t mean a thing“, den die beiden Herren nur zum Spaß überarbeitet und daraus „Doo Uap Doo Uap Doo Uap” gemacht haben – ein Stück, das recht unerwartet in die Top Ten gestürmt ist. Auf ihrem zweiten Album präsentieren sie wieder ihre Lieblingselemente Jazz, Rhythm und ein bisschen Retro-Style, die ihren Stücken diese spezielle Nuance verleihen. Mitgewirkt haben zudem bekante Namen wie Edwyn Collins, Dee Dee Bridgewater sowie deren Tochter China, die Talent und Ausdruck der Mutter geerbt hat. Mit ihrem zweiten Album tauchen Filippo Clary und „Max“ Bottini, die die Überbeanspruchung von Worten wie „Chill out“ und „Lounge“ etwas langweilt, in immer wärmere und mitreißende Sounds ein, die unaufhörlich auf die Tanzfläche locken. The duo Gabin is not from France, as the name might suggest, no, they call Italy their home. The faces behind the pseudonym are the musicians Massimo Bottini and Filippo Clary. And he who assumes a reference between “Gabin” and Jean Gabin, the world-famous French actor, is right, because supposedly the both have “borrowed” this name, knowing that it stands for style, personality and a distinctive character. To Music, Clary and Bottini approach from two different perspectives. While Clary works in Rome as a renowned dj and rocks the city’s nightlife there, Bottini is up to his tricks as a Jazz-bassist and can adorn himself with cooperations with such well-known Jazz personalities as Billy Cobham or John Scofield. Their own musical vision meets somewhere in the middle. Influences from Jazz and Soul meet Downbeat-sounds and Latin-rhythms. Discreetly used synthetic elements lend this lush musical cocktail the necessary drive.

It all began with the famous Duke Ellington song “It don’t mean a thing“, which the two have almost for fun transformed into “Doo Uap Doo Uap Doo Uap” – a piece, that hit the charts quite unexpectedly. On their second album, they once more offer some of their favourite elements jazz, rhythm and a bit of “retro” taste, which gives their melodies a special hue. And also some important names have participated: Edwyn Collins, Dee Dee Bridgewater and their daughter China, who has inherited the vocal gifts and expression from her mother. With their second CD, Fillipo und “Max”, who are tired of the over exploitation of words like “chill out” and “lounge”, freely dive into ever warmer and involving sounds… the dance floor is waiting for them!

Er hat einen der bekanntesten Stile des modernen Jazz-Klaviers geschaffen: Eine temperamentvolle Mischung aus zeitgenössischem Jazz, Funk und R & B, garniert mit einem Hauch von Gospel. JazzPianist und Komponist Alex Bugnon wurde 1958 in Montreux geboren. In seiner Heimatstadt findet regelmäßig das Montreux Jazz Festival statt – Bugnon ist also mehr oder weniger mit Jazz groß geworden.

Bevor er in die USA gezogen ist, hat er in Paris zwei Jahre am Konservatorium für Musik studiert. Danach besuchte er die Berklee School of Music und trat nebenbei mit Gospel-Gruppen auf. 1990 zog er nach New York, wo er vier Jahre als Session-Musiker mit Jazz-Interpreten wie Patti Austin, Freddie Jackson und Keith Sweat spielte. Mit seinem 1989 veröffentlichten Debüt-Album „Love Season“, schaffte er – ebenso wie mit dem Nachfolger „Head over heels“ – den Sprung in die Charts, bei den R&B-Charts sogar unter die Top 40. Auch die nachfolgenden Releases waren alle in den R&B-Charts platziert.

Nachdem er fünf Jahre lang kein Album mehr unter seinem Namen aufgenommen hatte, nahm ihn die Jazz-Sparte von Narada-Records unter Vertrag und vermarktete ihn als Solo-Jazz-Künstler. Sein Album „Alex Bugnon“ schaffte wieder den Einstieg in die Jazz-Charts, weitere Veröffentlichungen folgten und er gewann zwei Soul Train Music Awards.

Sein jüngstes Album, „Free“, hat ihn wieder mit dem Keyboarder und Produzenten Phil Davis aus Atlanta vereint. Nachdem er „Free“ ebenso wie sein letztes Album „Southern living“ in Atlanta aufgenommen hat, nennt Bugnon diese Stadt seine zweite musikalische Heimat. (sh)

Mr. Piano

He has created one of the most recognized styles in today‘s modern jazz piano. It is a sultry mixture of contemporary jazz, funk, and R&B with hints of gospel.

Jazz-pianist and composer Alex Bugnon was born in 1958 in Montreux. His hometown regularly hosts the Montreux Jazz Festival – thus, Bugnon has more or less grown up with Jazz. Before moving to the U.S.A he studied music at the Conservatorium in Paris for two years. He then went to the Berklee School of Music and performed with gospel groups as a sideline. In 1990 he moved to New York, where he played in the background as a session musician with artists like Patti Austin, Freddie Jackson and Keith Sweat. He made it into the charts with his debut album “Love Season” just as with its successor, “Head over Heels”; in the R&B charts he even secured a place among the top 40. All following releases were placed in the R&B charts, too.

After not having published an album under his own name for five years, the Jazz branch of Narada records offered him a contract and brought him to the market as a solo Jazz artist. He returned to the Jazz-charts with his album “Alex Bugnon” and further releases followed suit. Alex Bugnon has won two Soul train Music Awards. His latest album, “Free”, reunited him with Atlanta based keyboardist and producer Phil Davis. After recording “Free” and his last album, “Southern living” in Atlanta, Bugnon calls this city his second musical home.

Lord of the strings Der amerikanische Jazz-Gitarrist und Komponist mit italienischen Wurzeln wurde 1958 in New York City geboren. Er wuchs ihn Queens auf, wo er auch heute noch wohnt. Von der Musik infiziert wurde er durch seinen Vater, Ulpio Minucci – erfolgreicher Konzertpianist und Komponist. Ständig war der Sohn vom Klang der Musik umgeben, bis er schließlich mit fünf Jahren selbst klassisches Klavier lernte, aber mit acht Jahren auf Gitarre wechselte. Mit dreizehn gründete er gemeinsam mit Jungs aus der Nachbarschaft seine erste Band, Taurus, die immerhin drei Jahre existierte. Chieli war ein exzellenter Performer und trat in den Weihnachts- und Osterferien regelmäßig auf italienischen Kreuzfahrtschiffen auf, spielte aber auch auf Schulfesten, Partys und in Bars. Bereits als Teenager entdeckte er so seine Leidenschaft für Performance, Songwriting, Singen und Reisen. Am Ithaca College in New York belegte er im Hauptfach Musik, lernte klassisch Gitarre und studierte später Musiktheorie, -geschichte, Komposition sowie Big Band Arrangement. Nebenbei spielte er in verschiedenen lokalen Bands, wo er mit unterschiedlichsten Musikrichtungen experimentierte: von Folk/Pop und Fusion-Jazz/Rock über New wave Vocal/Rock und Brazilian bis hin zu Instrumental/Fusion Rock.

The American Jazz-guitarist and composer with Italian roots was born in New York in 1958. He grew up in Queens, where he still resides today. He began music early on, inspired by his father, Ulpio Minucci, who was a successful concert pianist and composer. He started studying classical piano from the age of 5, and eventually switched over to guitar at 8. At age 13 he joined neighbourhood friends to form the band, Taurus, which stayed together for about 3 years. Chieli did a great deal of performing and traveling with this band, performing regularly on the Italian Line Cruise ships during Christmas and Easter school holidays, as well as countless school dances and parties, as well as local bars. It was during these teen years that he developed his love for performing, writing, singing, and travelling.

At Ithaca College in New York, he initially majored in music, studying classical guitar. Later on he continued studying music theory, history, composition and big band arranging. Additionally, he was joining various local groups, where he gained experience with a variety of different music styles: folk/pop, fusion-jazz/rock, new wave vocal/rock, brazilian and instrumental/fusion rock.

Chieli selbst ist heute wohl am besten bekannt als Kopf der Grammy-nominierten Jazz-Band „Special EFX“, mit der er 23 CDs aufgenommen hat. Er hat aber auch schon zusammen gearbeitet mit Weltstars wie Celine Dion, Lionel Richie, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Jessica Simpson, Anastacia. Auch Jazz-Größen wie Marion Meadows, Jay Beckenstein, Gerald Veasley, Lao Tizer, Nestor Torez sowie Bob Baldwin wirkten schon gemeinsam mit Minucci und mit seinen Kompositionen für Film und Fernsehen hat er sich schon mehrere Daytime-Emmi-Nominierungen verdient. Today Chieli is probably best known as head of the Grammy-nominated Jazz-band “Special EFX”, with whom he has recorded 23 cds. Moreover, he has worked together with world stars such as Celine Dion, Lionel Richie, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Jessica Simpson, and Anastacia. From the world of Jazz Marion Meadows, Jay Beckenstein, Gerald Veasley, Lao Tizer, Nestor Torez and Bob Baldwin have cooperated with Minucci, and his compositions for movies and television have earned him several Daytime-Emmi-nominations. He took home the award twice.

The first name and the long hair are misleading: Marion Meadows is a man – with a penchant for stylish outfits. He prefers black, the man, whose ethnic mix is Native American, African American and Caucasian. With his exotic appearance and his black dreadlocks, he is surely a favourite with the Jazz-loving ladies. The saxophonist (soprano-, tenor- and baritone sax) was born in West Virginia, but he grew up in Connecticut. He began playing clarinet and studying classical music at eight years old. Very soon, he discovered his passion for different types of music, but also his penchant for jazz musicians like Stanley Turrentine, Duke Ellington or Coleman Hawkins. But actually, he dreamed of being either a veterinarian or zoologist – playing the sax was just a hobby. Until, while he was touring through Europe, he saw the way audiences reacted to him and his student cohorts in Holland, Italy and Austria. “It was a tremendous rush, and lit the fire.” … and burned the enthusiasm for veterinary medicine down to the ground.

After studying jazz with Anthony Truglia, Meadows attended Berklee College of Music, where he majored in arranging and composition. He later went to the SUNY Purchase School for the Arts, where he studied under Ron Herder and perfected his craft studying with Joe Henderson, Dave Liebman and Eddie Daniels. As a musician he sets an example for countless smoothsaxophonists, who all try to follow suit with the casually cool, but still powerfully emotional Meadows sound. By now he has worked together with a number of well-known artists like Brook Brenton, Eartha Kitt, Phyllis Hyman, Jean Carne, The Temptations, Michael Bolton or Angela Bofill.

Der Vorname und die langen Haare täuschen: Marion Meadows ist ein Mann – mit einer Vorliebe für stilvolle Outfits. Am liebsten trägt er schwarz, der Mann mit den indianischen, afrikanischen und kaukasischen Wurzeln, und ist mit seinem exotischen Äußeren und seinen pechschwarzen Dreadlocks sicherlich ein Liebling der weiblichen JazzFans. Geboren wurde der Saxophonist (Sopran-, Tenor- und Baritonsax) in West Virginia, aufgewachsen ist er in Connecticut. Mit acht Jahren begann er, Klarinette zu spielen und klassische Musik zu lernen. Sehr bald entdeckte er seine Leidenschaft für verschiedene Arten von Musik, aber auch seine Vorliebe für Jazz-Musiker wie Stanley Turrentine, Duke Ellington oder Coleman Hawkins. Heute ist er das musikalische Vorbild unzähliger Smooth-Saxophonisten, die sich alle bemühen, sein cool-lässiges und dabei doch ausdrucksstarkes Spiel zu verinnerlichen. Die F(ph)uture Jazzer Die Heidelberger Band De Phazz wurde 1997 von Pit Baumgartner als offenes Bandprojekt gegründet. Bekannt wurde sie unter anderem durch ihren Radiohit „The Mambo Craze“ aus ihrem zweiten Album „Godsdog“. Der Name „De Phazz“ leitet sich von destination f(ph)uture jazz ab. Die Musik, die auch in einigen Werbespots schon zu hören war, ist sehr vielgestaltig und enthält Elemente von Dub, Jazz, Soul, Trip-Hop, Latin, Drum‘n‘Base, Ambient und R&B, aber auch Elemente des Turntablism werden in die Musik eingebunden.

Die Band selbst entwickelt sich mehr und mehr zum Live-Act, wobei sie meist in Clubs oder auf Open Airs auftreten, die Musik wird bei Auftritten oft durch Licht- und Farbspiele, Projektionen und Tänze untermalt. Die Besetzung der Band ändert sich fortwährend – zu ihren Mitgliedern gehören oder gehörten Musiker wie Karl Frierson (Gesang), Oli Rubow (Schlagzeug), Susanne Horn (Gesang), Pat Appleton (Gesang), Roy Randolph (Percussion, Gesang), Ralf Oehmichen (Gitarre) oder Frank Spaniol (Saxophon). They got famous, among others, with their radio hit “The Mambo Craze” from their second album “Godsdog”. The name “De Phazz” is derived from destination f(ph)uture jazz.

The music, which might be familiar from a couple of TV commercials, is very varied and includes elements from Dub, Jazz, Soul, Trip-Hop, Latin, Drum`n`Base, Ambient and R&B, but also elements of Turntablism are woven into their music. The band itself developed more and more into a Live-Act and appears mainly in clubs and on open airs; the music is often accentuated by light and colour displays, projections and dances. The formation of the band itself keeps changing – its members include or have included musicians like Karl Frierson (vocals), Oli Rubow (drums), Susanne Horn (vocals), Pat Appleton (vocals), Roy Randolph (percussion, vocals), Ralf Oehmichen (guitar) or Frank Spaniol (saxophone).

Pit Baumgartner – wer sich Ihre Vita durchliest, kommt ganz schön ins Staunen. Gibt es in punkto Musik IRGENDETWAS, das Sie noch nicht gemacht haben?

Fahrstuhlmusik?

Ich dachte bislang, wir machen verträgliche Tapetenmusik!?!

Pit Baumgartner: Da werde ich für einen „einfachen Unterhaltungskünstler« gleich mal pathetisch: Ich vermute, ich habe mir meinen musikalischen Traum noch nicht erfüllt – und das ist gut so.

Bei jedem neuen Lied versuche ich, diesem Traum etwas näher zu kommen, die Sehnsucht zu begreifen, die mich antreibt. Aber möge sich dieser Traum nie erfüllen, denn dann wäre ich musikalisch am Ende angelangt und müsste mir eine neue Leidenschaft suchen.

Demnächst steht für Sie eine weitere Premiere an: Sie treten mit De Phazz auf dem 1st annual Smooth Jazz Festival Bregenz auf. Als Begriff ist „Smooth Jazz“ hierzulande noch recht unbekannt. Manche denken sofort „nur“ an Jazz, andere urteilen provokativ: „Ach – Fahrstuhlmusik“. Wie beschreiben Sie Smooth Jazz?

Compilations in aller Munde ist: Smooth Lounge, Erotic Lounge – da gibt’s ja alles. Von Lounge zum Arbeiten bis hin zum Staubsaugen. Naja: Letzteres ist mir noch nicht wirklich begegnet...

Den bloßen Begriff „Jazz“ verbinde ich immer mit Classical Jazz, old school. Dann gibt es neuere Formen, die überwiegend sehr entspannt klingen. Auf diese Formate zielt, meiner Meinung nach, der Begriff „Smooth Jazz“ ab. Aber wir Musiker denken nicht so streng in Kategorien. Das ist eher für Händler interessant, die ihr CD-Fach irgendwie bezeichnen müssen, um die Leute zu lotsen.

Ich sehe schon: Die „Ach – Fa h r s t u h l m u s i k “ -Th e m at i k bringt Sie nicht aus der Ruhe.

Nein, da hab ich ein dickes Fell, bin selbst auch der, der sich am wenigsten ernst nimmt. Gelegenheiten, zu denen man unsere Musik auflegen kann, gibt es viele: Der eine serviert Essen, der andere küsst, der Dritte fährt eben Fahrstuhl. Über die Jahre entwickelt man zum Glück eine gewisse Souveränität: Man steht zu dem, was man hört und was man macht. Früher kam das alles einer Religionsbekundung gleich.

Religion? Gutes Stichwort: Der Name De Phazz setzt

sich zusammen aus „destination f(ph)uture jazz“. Ein Missionierungsgedanke?

Auf jeden Fall ein Modernisierungsgedanke. Das Ziel war, den Jazz aufzumischen, ihn mit modernen Produktionsmitteln wie Computer und Effekten ins nächste Jahrtausend zu transportieren.

Ich bin Collagenmusiker – mit Leib und Seele. Ich baue meine Musik aus verschiedenen Komponenten und indem ich mich verschiedener musikalischer Zitate bediene, die nicht immer aus der eigenen Feder stammen, kann ich spezielle Atmosphären erzeugen, Dinge karikieren. Das bedeutet Jazz für mich: Absolute Freiheit.

Bei all der Freiheit: Gibt es eine Grenze, die Sie nicht überschreiten würden?

Es gibt zumindest Dinge oder Musikrichtungen, zu denen ich keine Beziehung habe, etwa Dixieland. Auch in punkto Dark Metal hält sich meine Begeisterungsfähigkeit in Grenzen, da ich ein eher sanftmütiger, harmonischer Charakter bin. Für was ich allerdings eine Vorliebe habe, trotz der Sanftmut, sind spitze Bemerkungen. Manche De Phazz-Stücke sind voll davon. Hier kommt der ureigene Zynismus der Band

zum Ausdruck – aber so verpackt, dass Sie die Stücke auch auf einem Kindergeburtstag spielen könnten.

Wie hat sich De Phazz seit der ersten Platte weiterentwickelt?

Im Gegensatz zu früher wird De Phazz heute eher als Live-Tanzund Party-Band wahrgenommen.

Was uns stark beeinflusst hat, waren die Touren. Am Anfang haben wir unsere Stücke hauptsächlich im Studio zusammengebaut – steht man plötzlich öfter auf der Bühne, verändert das ganz klar.

Ich habe angefangen, die Musik direkt für die Bühne zu entwerfen, weiß heute genau, an welcher Stelle ich noch einen Fun-Titel für die Zugabe brauche. Und diese Entwicklung spiegelt sich in den Alben wieder. Allerdings, das haben wir auch schon festgestellt, erwarten die Leute von De Phazz mit einem neuen Album immer auch einen neuen Trend. Während bei manchen Kollegen eine Platte ganz selbstverständlich klingen darf wie die andere, heißt es bei uns gleich: „Oh! Lounge ist alt geworden!“ Da liegt also die Messlatte sehr hoch?

Ich würde eher sagen: Das ist eine Originalitäts-Bürde.

Es kommt auch tatsächlich vor, dass

ich einen Country-Song, der mir gefällt, einfach bearbeite und auf einer Platte veröffentliche. Was mir auf der anderen Seite wieder die Gefahr einer roten Karte vonseiten der Goa-Lounge-Fraktion einbringt.

Das ist die Krux, mit der eine Band, die vielseitige Musik macht, leben muss. Da gibt es immer einen Song, der dem ein oder anderen nicht zusagt…

Ja – dafür hat Gott ja den SkipKnopf am CD-Player erschaffen…

Kann man damit auch unliebsame Kritiken skippen?

Apropos Kritiken: Der Rolling Stone schrieb über De Phazz „…klingt nicht so deutsch, wie befürchtet“. (lacht) Ja, das versteh, wer will.

Wieder so eine Kategorie, die man getrost ignorieren darf. Generell muss man lernen, eine gewisse Distanz zu wahren. Bin ich mit einer Platte fertig, sag ich immer: ‚Nun werf’ ich sie den Haien vor und lass los, damit mir die Bisse nicht weh tun.’

An welchen Projekten arbeiten Sie aktuell?

An einem Hörspiel mit modernen Märchen, auf dem auch Musikstücke meines Solo-Albums „Tales of trust“ gespielt werden und das

an Weihnachten erscheinen soll.

Zudem arbeiten wir an einer Platte, die nächstes Jahr zum zehnjährigen Jubiläum von De Phazz auf den Markt kommen wird. Wir haben mit der Big Band des Hessischen Rundfunks einige Stücke eingespielt – eine Art Greatest Hits-Album. Und schließlich sitze ich schon wieder sehnsüchtig über der nächsten regulären De Phazz-Platte.

Wann wird die „den Haien vorgeworfen“?

Da müssen wir noch sehen, wie viel Zeit wir nach der Big BandGeschichte verstreichen lassen.

Das ist immer eine Gratwanderung zwischen: ‚Wann gehe ich jemandem auf den Wecker?’ und ‚Wann hat man mich vergessen?’.

Dazwischen kommt die nächste Platte raus…

Und davor werden wir De Phazz in Bregenz live erleben. Was erwartet die Fans?

Eating, kissing, elevator?

Born in Heidelberg, his sign: Libra – does not catch the eye so far.

Attributes like moonstruck and hungry for sun make listening seem more worthwhile. Somebody who is day AND night-active? Maybe – but there is much more to him than that: A Transistor-Radio-Kid during the „Swinging Sixties“, a Folksinger supported by „KrautRock-Intermezzo“ during the Seventies, then music apprentice in the streets (as a Hippie), guest performances as a clown in Germany and Japan, radio plays for children and so on. The biography of Pit Baumgartner, founder and producer of „De Phazz“, sounds quite crazy and makes people curious for more. We inquired a little more and talked to the musical Jack-of-all-Trades…..

Pit Baumgartner – your biography is an amazing reading. As to music, is there ANYTHING you still haven´t done so far?

Pit Baumgartner: For a simple entertainer, I have to go very pathetic right now: I suppose I haven´t fullfilled my dreams about music yet – and I like it this way. With every new song, I try to get closer to my dream, try to comprehend the longing that´s driving me. But hopefully this dream will never come true, because if it did, I would have reached the end of my musical career and would have to look for a new passion.

There’s another premiere waiting for you. You’ll be performing with De Phazz on the 1st Annual Smooth Jazz Festival in Bregenz. »Smooth Jazz« is still rather unknown in this country. Some may simply think of Jazz, others may judge provocatively „Well – easy listening music like you hear in elevators”. How would you describe Smooth Jazz?

Easy listening music like in elevators? I thought, we are playing agreeable Pop-music!?! (laughs) Many use the term “Lounge“ which is familiar because it is used in many compilations.. Smooth Lounge, Erotic Lounge – there are loads of examples. Starting with Lounge to listen to at work or while hoovering your flat. Well, I haven´t heard of that last one so far. I always associate the term “Jazz“ with Classical Jazz, just old school if you want to put it this way. Then there are newer variations that sound very relaxed. term “Smooth Jazz” refers to these variations. But musicians like me don`t think this way. That´s something more like a train of thought for the retailers, who want to label their CD-racks to lure the customers closer to the racks.

If I understand you correctly, this so-called “well – just easy-listening-music-elevator-discussion“ doesn`t trouble you very much.

No, definitely not, because I don´t take myself too seriously. There are many occasions where playing our kind of music fits in perfectly. One is just serving something to eat, the other is kissing, a third one is using the elevator. You know, one develops a certain kind of sovereignty over the years. You stand for the things you are listening to or which you are doing. In the past, this used to be a kind of religious statement.

Religion? Good cue: The name “De Phazz“ is a composition of “destination f(ph)uture jazz“. An idea with a mission?

Certainly an idea for modernisation! The aim was to update Jazz music, to take Jazz into the next millennium with the help of computers and modern effects. I´m a dedicated collage musician. I “build” my music out of different components and by using different musical themes, of which I am not always the creator, but with which I´m able to sketch very special vibes. That´s what jazz is all about: absolute freedom.

Despite all that freedom: Is there a border you wouldn`t be prepared to cross?

At least there are things or kinds of music I have no relation to, like Dixieland. This also goes for Dark Metal,for which my enthusiasm is very limited because I consider myself as a gentle and balanced character. Despite of me being gentle, I just love pointed remarks. There are some “De Phazz”-songs that are full of them. In these songs our tendency to cynicism comes to the surface – but it is still nicely wrapped up so you could play our stuff at any kid´s birthday party.

“…doesn´t sound as German as one might have suspected”.

How has De Phazz changed since the first record?

I´m working on a radio play consisting of modern fairy tales and some pieces of my solo-album “Tales of trust“. It´s scheduled to be released at Christmas-time this year. Furthermore we are working on an album which is going to be released on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of De Phazz next year. We dubbed some songs with the Big Band of the “Hessische Rundfunk“ – something like a “best of” album. And finally, I´m already brooding over the next regular De Phazz album.

In contrast to the past, De Phazz is considered a Live-and Party-Act nowadays. It`s our tours which have influenced us a lot in that direction . In the beginning, our songs were mainly composed in studios – performing on stage more often changes you. I started composing music just for Live-Acts and I know right now where to place a „Fun song“, if giving an encore. That´s a development you can recognize on our albums. However, people expect a new trend with every new De Phazz album. While some of our colleagues are allowed to sound the same on every album, it´s like “Oh – lounge went old these days” with a De Phazz album.

So the expectations are very high?

I would rather put it this way: It´s a burden of originality. Sometimes I take a country-song I like, alter it and publish it on an album. On the other hand, this sometimes puts me in danger of being shown the red card by the Goa-Lounge-Fraction.

That´s a problem every band that plays multi-facetted music has to deal with. There will always be someone who won`t like a song....

That´s why god created the skipbutton on every CD-player…

Are you also able to skip some of those unwanted reviews? Speaking of reviews: Rolling Stone magazine wrote about De Phazz

(laughing) Jep, can´t understand this. Just one of those categories you can forget about very easily. In general you have to learn to keep your distance.When I have just finished an album, I tell myself: ’Now is the time to throw it to the lions and let it go, so that the bites won`t hurt as much’.

What projects are you working on currently?

And the album is “going to be thrown to the lions“ when?

We have to find out how much time we are willing to let pass after the Big Band thing. That´s kind of a tightrope-walk. The question is: ‘When will I be driving someone up the wall?’ And ‘When will I be forgotten.’ In between the next album is going to be released.

Prior to this we will see De Phazz as a live act in Bregenz. What can fans expect?

A potpourri. There will be songs from all albums.

And what do you expect of the Festival?

That the weather will be nice, that the sound will be brilliant and that there will be a lot of people we can make happy.

Praful wurde in Deutschland geboren, hat jedoch in den späten 80ern Amsterdam zu seiner Wahlheimat gemacht. Er spielt Saxophon, Flöte und Bansuri und war musikalisch in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten viel in den Genres Jazz, Dance, Trip Hop sowie lateinische und westafrikanische Musik unterwegs – vor allem aber waren es die Musikkulturen Brasiliens und Indiens, die ihn prägten. Im Studio gearbeitet und auf der Bühne gestanden hat er mit zahlreichen Künstlern und Bands, unter anderen mit Project 2000, Dave Koz, Gerardo Rosales, Lilian Vieira (Zuco103), Jonathan Butler, Marc Antoine, Hardsoul oder DJ Maestro. Mit Project 2000 hat er beispielsweise, an der Seite seiner Kollegen Adani & Wolf, den niederländischen Heineken Crossover Award gewonnen.

Sax-, Flute- and Bansuri- player Praful is a native German who chose Amsterdam as his home base in the late 80‘s. Over the last two decades he has emerged himself in Jazz, Dance, Trip Hop, Latin and West African Music and especially in the musical cultures of Brazil and India. He has recorded and shared the stage with numerous artists and bands: Project 2000, Dave Koz, Gerardo Rosales, Lilian Vieira (Zuco103), Jonathan Butler, Marc Antoine, Hardsoul or DJ Maestro. With ‚Project 2000‘ he was, together with his colleagues Adani & Wolf, decorated with the Dutch Heineken Crossover Award.

Seinen ersten Solo-Vertrag unterzeichnete er 2001 und veröffentlichte im selben Jahr das Album „One Day Deep“, das er mit Adani & Wolf produzierte.

Das Album wurde auch in den USA auf den Markt gebracht, was ihm den Titel „Jazz Newcomer des Jahres 2003“ einbrachte. Wie die Zeitschrift „The Wave“ schrieb, brachte seine Musik „frischen Wind“ in den zeitgenössischen Jazz Amerikas. Das Album hielt sich 70 Wochen lang in den amerikanischen Billboard-Charts und landete in den US-Charts mit der Single „Sigh“ sogar auf Platz eins. 2005 veröffentlichte Praful die CD „Pyramid in your backyard“ – nicht zuletzt ein „akustischer Beweis“ dafür, dass er kontinuierlich seinen warmen und ursprünglichen Mix aus Jazz, Electronic und Worldmusic weiterentwickelt. Praful spricht fließend sieben Sprachen – ein echter Weltbürger, der die (musikalische) Begegnung und Gemeinschaft mit Menschen aller Rassen, Kulturen und Religionen liebt und sucht.

Seine Alben wurden veröffentlicht in Nordamerika, Europa und Asien, er selbst ist mit seiner Band sowie in Verbindung mit anderen Projekten schon in ganz Europa, den USA, Kanada, Brasilien, Mexiko, Ecuador, Malaysia und Indonesien aufgetreten. (sh)

His first solo artist deal he signed in 2001 and in the same year he released the album ‘One Day Deep‘, produced by him together with Adani & Wolf. The Album was also launched in the USA and therefore Praful was embraced as “Jazz-Debut artist of the year 2003“.

The album stayed in the US American Billboard chart for 70 weeks and scored a number one radio hit with the first US-single “Sigh”. Developing further his warm and original crossover between Jazz, Electronica and WorldMusic, Praful released ‘Pyramid in your Backyard’ in 2005. Fluent in seven languages, he is a true world citizen who loves and seeks the (musical) meeting and community with humans from all colors, cultures and religions. His albums are released in North America, Europe and Asia and Praful has performed with his Band as well as other projects all over Europe, in the USA, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Ecuador, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Ein Engländer, der leutseligen Charme und musikalische Verspieltheit in seine Musik legt. Das Ergebnis: Smooth Jazz mit einer Lebendigkeit, die vielen anderen in diesem Genre fehlt. 1954 in Luton geboren, war White schon als Kind in Musik vernarrt. Sein Vater ermutigte ihn, viele Instrumente zu lernen – Blockflöte, Klarinette, Kornett, Posaune, Violine, Mundharmonika, Klavier - aber die Instrumente des Vaters waren nicht das Seine – Seins war die Gitarre. Doch dabei konnte ihm der Vater nicht helfen. Also stellte er sich auf eigene Beine, experimentierte mit einfachen Akkorden und hörte sich Melodien aus dem Radio ab. Wie viele Musiker wurde White stark von den Beatles und den Gitarren getriebenen Sounds der Beat-Gruppen aus den 60ern beeinflusst. Nachdem jedoch seine erste elektrische Gitarre, die er sich als Jugendlicher gekauft hatte, in einem Feuer verbrannt war, musste er mit einer akustischen Gitarre Vorlieb nehmen. Aus der Not wurde Tugend: White entdeckte seine Liebe zur akustischen Musik und spielt sich heute mit Vorliebe „sein Herz auf Nylon-Saiten raus“.

An Englishman who accentuates his music with genial charm and musical playfulness. The result: Smooth Jazz with a spiritedness which many others in this genre lack. Born in Luton in 1954, White devoted himself to music already as a child. His father encouraged him to learn many instruments – the recorder, the clarinet, cornet, the trombone, violin, mouth organ, the piano – but his father’s instruments were not his – his was the guitar. But here his father could not help him.

Therefore he helped himself, experimented with a few simple chords and imitated melodies from the radio.

Like many musicians, White was strongly influenced by the Beatles and the guitar-driven Beat sound of the sixties. After his first electric guitar, which he had bought as a teenager, had burnt in a fire, however, he had to make do with an acoustic guitar. He made the best of it: White discovered his love for acoustic music and today loves to “play his heart out on nylon strings”.

Kurz nachdem er mit 18 Jahren die Schule verlassen hatte, erhielt er ein Engagement in einer Hotelanlage im Süden Englands, wo er den Sommer über spielte. Danach reiste er nach London und trat einer Band bei, die von Miles Copeland (Manager von Sting, R.E.M.) gemanaged wurde. Copeland vermittelte dem 20jährigen White auch den Kontakt zu Al Stewart, mit dem er kurze Zeit später durch England und die USA tourte. Zuerst als Pianist, später arbeitete er auch als Gitarrist, Komponist und Co-Produzent mit Stewart. 1979 zog White nach Los Angeles, gründete die Band Shot in the dark und eine Plattenfirma namens Lobster Music. Shortly after he had left school at 18 he got an engagement in a hotel resort in the South of England, where he played over the summer. After that he travelled to London and joined a band managed by Miles Copeland (manager of Sting, R.E.M.). It was Copeland who arranged the contact between the 20-year-old White and Al Stewart, with whom he toured England and the US shortly after. He worked with Stewart as a pianist at first, and later also as a guitarist, composer and coproducer. In 1979 White moved to Los Angeles, formed the band Shot in the Dark and a record label called Lobster Music.

Botschafterin der Musik Ambassadress of music Pat Appleton, Tochter einer deutschen Mutter und eines liberianischen Vaters, hat es während ihres Politikwissenschaftsstudiums ins Musikbusiness verschlagen, als sie einen Nebenjob als Sängerin bei einer Party- und Tanzcombo anfing. Bald stellte sie fest, dass sie sich weit besser als Botschafterin der Musik eignete anstatt, wie ursprünglich geplant, ein Sprachrohr für die Politik zu geben. Also hängte Pat den Wunsch des Vaters, der sie gerne als Präsidentin von Liberia gesehen hätte, an den Nagel und absolvierte stattdessen eine Gesangsausbildung. Nach diversen Stationen als Lead- und Background-Interpretin für zahlreiche Pop- und Jazzbands sowie Ausflügen in die Werbe- und Filmmusik schloss sie sich 1999 dem Heidelberger Klangkollektiv De Phazz an, bei dem sie zusätzlich als Texterin und Komponistin kreativ ist. Nicht zuletzt ist sie auch ein gerngesehener Gast bei Bands wie Jazzkantine oder Nighthawks, mit denen sie ebenfalls Songs geschrieben und veröffentlicht hat. Als „eine der wichtigsten Stimmen des zeitgenössischen, deutschen Jazz“ (3sat) bereist Pat Appleton heute mit De Phazz die ganze Welt. Im vergangenen September stellte sie ihr erstes Solo-Album „What‘s Next?“ vor. (dm) Pat Appleton, daughter of a German mother and a Liberian father has found her way into music business during her time as a student of political sciences, when she took on a job as a singer in a party- and dance combo. She soon realised that being an ambassador for music suited her far better than lending her voice to politics, as originally planned. She therefore chucked her father’s dream of her becoming President of Liberia and completed a vocal training. After a diversity of engagements as a lead- or background interpreter for numerous Popand Jazz bands as well as excursions into advertising and film soundtracks, she joined the Heidelberg sound-collective De Phazz in 1999, where she is creative as a composer and texter as well. Last but not least she is also a popular guest-singer with Bands like the Jazzkantine or the Nighthawks, with whom she has also written and published songs. As “one of the most important voices of contemporary German Jazz” (3sat) Pat Appleton tours the world with De Phazz today. Last September she presented her first solo album “What’s Next?”

Der Alt- und Sopran-Saxophonist Jaared Arosemena wurde 1967 in Washington geboren.

Mit sieben Jahren begann er, Saxophon zu spielen – auf Empfehlung seines Arztes. Der Grund: Er litt schon von klein auf an Asthma. Bei so einer Diagnose Unterrichtsstunden für ein Blasinstrument – quasi auf Rezept – zu verabreichen, mag sonderlich klingen – tatsächlich zielte der Mediziner jedoch auf eine Stärkung der Lungen ab. Der Patient muss seine Medizin brav geschluckt haben, denn heute ist er vor allem in Jazz-Kreisen bestens bekannt: Jaared garantiert eingängigen, locker-leichten Smooth-Jazz. Stark beeinflusst von David Sanborn, dessen Musik ihn schon als Jugendlicher maßgeblich geprägt hat, wurde Jaared Mitte der 80er Jahre in der Musik-Szene von Washington DC aktiv, wo er mit unterschiedlichsten Künstlern performed hat: Angefangen von Ju Ju House von der Go-Go-Funkband EU bis hin zu Mary Ann Redmond, einer ausgezeichneten Soul-/RockSängerin auf der Linie von Tina Turner und Etta James.

Obwohl er auch in mehreren R&B-Gigs mitmischte, hat der Musiker, als er Anfang der 2000er Jahre begann, eigene Alben aufzunehmen, beschlossen, sich auf Smooth Jazz zu konzentrieren (eine Zeit, in der er auch an der Seite von Jazz-Gittarist Peter White durch die Vereinigten Staaten tourte). Sein Debüt-Album „Foreward“ wurde 2001 veröffentlicht, machte ihn mit einem Schlag bekannt und brachte ihm sogar eine Nominierung als bester neuer Künstler für die 3. Annual National Smooth Jazz Awards ein. 2002 veröffentlichte Jaared sein Album „Hangtime“, das die coolen Vibes seines Debüts auf die Spitze trieb, während es zugleich ein vielfältigeres Saxophonspiel präsentierte. 2008 folgte das neueste Jaared-Album „Addiction“. Sax auf Rezept Sax on Prescription The alto- and soprano-saxophonist Jaared Arosemena was born in Washington in 1967. He began playing the saxophone at the age of seven – on the recommendation of a doctor. The reason: he suffered from asthma as a child. To prescribe lessons on a wind instrument with such a diagnosis might sound strange at first, but actually the doctor was aiming at strengthening the lungs. The patient must have taken his medicine obediently, as he is a most wellknown Jazz-musician today. Jaared stands for neat, casually-light Smooth Jazz. A major influence on him was David Sanborn, whose music had left an impression on Jaared even as a teenager; he made a name for himself in the music scene of Washington DC in the 80ies, where he performed with a diversity of artists: Starting with Ju Ju House of the Go-Go-Funk band EU up to Mary Ann Redmond, a highly distinguished Soul-/Rock-singer made along the lines of Tina Turner and Etta James.

Even though he took part in a couple of R&B-Gigs, too, when he started recording albums of his own in 2000 the musician decided to concentrate on Smooth Jazz (in a time when he also toured the U.S. side by side with Jazz-guitarist Peter White). His debut album “Foreward” was published in 2001, helped establish him as a top new artist in the genre, which culminated in his nomination for Best New Artist at the 3rd Annual National Smooth Jazz Awards. In 2002 Jaared released his CD “Hangtime”, that carries the cool vibe of his debut to deep extremes, while also showing a richer diversity in the veteran sax man‘s artistry. In 2008 the latest Jaared album “Addiction” followed. Fans can expect a variety of grooves and melodies that are sure to please.

Angefangen hat alles mit ein paar Jazz-Platten. Geschenke seines Vaters, die voll ins Schwarze getroffen und den neunjährigen Sohn inspiriert haben, Saxophon zu lernen….. Schnellvorlauf ins Jahr 1998: Der in Bari aufgewachsene Süditaliener Rocco Ventrella fängt seine Liaison mit Smooth Jazz an und nimmt einige Songs auf, um diesen neuen Musikstil zu erkunden. 2005 nahm Rocco die CD „Tribute to Grover Washington, Jr.“ auf und produzierte sie zum Andenken an den großen Saxophonisten. Die CD enthielt ursprünglich nur drei Tracks, machte ihn aber via Internet bekannt bei allen SmoothJazz-Stationen. Ventrella machte weiter mit eigenen Stücken, darunter die gefühlvolle, eindringliche Nummer „I receive your love“. Dieser Titel und die Tribute-CD weckten die Aufmerksamkeit des amerikanischen Produzenten Bruce Nazarian (Anita Baker, Millie Scott, Automatix) – der Beginn einer weiteren, internationalen „Liaison“, die bald erste Früchte trug: das neue Album „Give me the groove“.

Nachdem er eine Vorab-Aufnahme gehört hatte, leistete Jimi King, Smooth Jazz-Programmdirektor von www.sky.fm ordentlich Geburtshilfe: Er stellte den Titel „Soulful strut“ als seine Nummer eins im Countdown zum Jahresende 2006 vor, und platzierte zwei weitere Rocco-Songs in den Top 25. Nach ihrer Veröffentlichung eroberte die CD das Internetradio im Sturm. Seit ihrer offiziellen Veröffentlichung eroberte diese CD die Internet-Radios im Sturm! Sogar Kollegen wie George Duke, Dave Koz, Bob James und Chris Standring waren voll des Lobes und im November 2007 wurde Rocco pre-nominiert für den „50° Grammy Award – Best Contemporary Jazz Album 2007“. It all started with a few jazz records. Gifts of his father, that hit the bullseye and inspired the nine-year-old son, to begin playing saxophone…. fast forward to 1998...

The South Italian Rocco Ventrella, who grew up in Bari, begins his love affair with Smooth Jazz and starts to record some tracks to explore this new musical style.

In 2005, he recorded and produced the CD “Tribute To Grover Washington, Jr.“ in memory of the great saxophone player. This Album originally contained only three tracks, but it was instrumental in making Rocco a household name on Smooth Jazz stations across the Internet. Ventrella continued with own compositions, including the soulful and haunting „I receive your love“.

The Tribute CD and „I Receive Your Love“ brought Rocco to the attention of American producer Bruce Nazarian (Anita Baker, Millie Scott, The Automatix) – the beginning of another “love affair”, that soon fructified: The new album “Give me the groove” was released.

Smooth Jazz meets Groove

After hearing an early copy of the CD, Jimi King, Smooth Jazz Programme Director of www.SKY.fm named „Soulful Strut“ as his Number One Smooth Jazz Track of 2006 in the year-end countdown, and placed two additional Rocco tracks in the top 25. Since its official release, this CD has taken internet radio by storm and it even obtained quotes from George Duke, Dave Koz, Bob James and Chris Standring. In November 2007 Rocco has been pre-nominated for the 50° Grammy Award Contemporary Jazz Best Album 2007.

„If I want Sax, I call Candy“, schwärmte einst Megastar Prince und er ist nicht der einzige, der bei Candy Dulfer anklingelt – die Holländerin hat sich am Saxophon längst einen international renommierten Namen gemacht. Für die Tochter des bekannten Jazz-Saxophonisten Hans Dulfer war schon früh klar, dass sie in seine Fußstapfen treten wird. Bereits als Sechsjährige griff Candy zum Saxophon, mit 14 hatte sie ihre erste eigene Band (Funky Stuff ), mit der sie bis heute zusammenarbeitet. 1987 heizte sie im Vorprogramm von Madonna ein, ein Jahr später hätte sie für Prince die Shows in den Niederlanden eröffnen sollen. Als sie kurzfristig eine Absage erhielt, beschwerte sich Candy mit einem Brief bei ihm. Was offenbar Eindruck gemacht hat: Der Mann aus Minneapolis lud sie als Gast auf die Bühne ein. Seitdem ging sie mehrfach mit ihm auf Tour und ist auf diversen seiner Alben zu hören. 1990 erscheint Candy Dulfers erstes Solo-Album „Saxuality“, das sich als großer Erfolg erweist. Candy tourt durch fast ganz Europa und hat sogar Auftritte in den USA. Lohn der Mühen: Eine Nominierung bei den Grammy Awards in der Kategorie „Bestes Pop-Album Instrumental“. In den letzten Jahren arbeitete Candy Dulfer unter anderem mit Dave Stewart, Van Morrison, Pink Floyd, Aretha Franklin oder Beyoncé.

Ende Juni 2007 erschien mit „Candy Store“ das mittlerweile zehnte Album der holländischen Künstlerin. Auf 13 Tracks zelebriert Candy ihre künstlerische Reife und spielt mit verschiedensten Versatzstücken aus Pop, Soul und Jazz. “If I want sax, I call Candy” Megastar Prince once said adoringly – and he is not the only one with whom Candy Dulfer rings a bell – the Dutchwoman has long since made a name for herself internationally as a saxophonist. The daughter of the well-known Jazz saxophonist Hans Dulfer soon knew that she would be treading in her father’s footsteps. Candy started playing the sax as a six-year-old; at 14 she had a band of her own (Funky Stuff ) with whom she works together up to the present day. In 1987 she put the heat on the audience as a supporting act for Madonna, and one year later she should have opened Prince’s shows in the Netherlands. When she received a cancellation at short notice she wrote him a letter of complaint. Which apparently was worth the effort: the man from Minneapolis invited her as a guest onto his stage. Since that day she repeatedly went on tours with him and can be heard on many of his albums. In 1990 Candy Dulfer`s first solo album “Saxuality” appeared and was an immediate success. Candy tours almost all of Europe and even performs in the U.S. With rewards: a Grammy Award nomination in the category “Best Pop-Album Instrumental”. At the end of July 2007 the 10th album of the Dutch artist appeared. On 13 tracks Candy celebrates her maturity as a musician and plays with the most diverse elements form Pop, Soul and Jazz. Elements from Hip Hop and Rap are even more prominent here than in the past.

Smooth Jazz on ice Schon mit ihrer ersten Band haben Roberto Adani und Wolf Daniël ziemlich heiße MusikAbenteuer erlebt: Project 2000, eine Drum & Bass-Crossover-Band, die die beiden in den späten 90er Jahren ins Leben gerufen haben – mit Erfolg, denn es dauerte nicht lang, da hatten sie schon den Heineken Crossover Award 2000/2001 in der Tasche. Auch ihr Debüt-Album „It’s About Time” kam gut an und die Jungs tourten einige Jahre quer durch Hollands Festival-Szene. 2001 haben die beiden Holländer mit Praful „One day deep“ produziert und kombinierten ihre jazzigen Vibes mit Einflüssen aus Brasilien und Indien. Die Musik ging um die ganze Welt, wurde ein „Billboard Best Selling Album“ und stürmte die Top Ten der American Contemporary Jazz Charts. Already with her first band Roberto Adani & Wolf Daniël experienced pretty hot musical adventures: Project 2000, a drum & bass-crossover band, the two have launched in the late 90s – successfully, because quite soon after they got started the band got awarded with the 2000/2001 edition of the Heineken Crossover Award. Their debut album ‘It’s about Time’ was very well received, too, and for some years the two guys toured through the Dutch festival scene. In 2001 they produced “One Day Deep” together with Praful and combined their jazzy vibes with music extracts from Brazil and India. The music travelled throughout the world, became a ‘Billboard Best Selling album’ and reached the top 10 in the American Contemporary Jazz Charts. The single “Sigh” became a solid #1 hit on US jazz radio.

Their own album “Les Seigneurs” features the guitar sound from Ernest Ranglin (Bob Marley, St Germain), the voice and tenor sax of Praful and the voices of female singer Billie Godfrey (Sting, Mr Hermano), Neobe, Moira Monsoon and Miss Bunty. The album “Unconditional” was next featuring Neobe on six tracks. (Meanwhile: Tommy Hilfiger offered directly a sponsor deal to get them dressed well). In 2006 they started to work on a new project: General Electric Paradise – GEP can be considered as the Phoenix risen from the ashes of Project 2000. Together with singer/guitar player Leon James they have worked on a new album that will be released in 2008. What else is worth knowing? The two also are working on a chill/Nujazz album, that will be released this autumn.

Das Festspielhaus in Bregenz ist das größte und modernste Veranstaltungszentrum zwischen München und Zürich. Im Juli 2006 wurde es nach einer Generalsanierung feierlich wieder eröffnet. Zehn Monate lang war das Haus für knapp 40 Millionen Euro komplett neu gestaltet worden.

Seit seiner Eröffnung im Jahr 1979 hat das Festspielhaus Bregenz rund 6.500 Veranstaltungen beheimatet und 6,5 Millionen Besucher begrüßt. Dabei ist das Haus, das der Gast heute vorfindet, das Ergebnis ständiger Entwicklung. Bereits 13 Jahre nach der Eröffnung fand 1992 ein Architektenwettbewerb für die Erweiterung des Hauses statt. Das Siegerprojekt des damals noch weitgehend unbekannten Bregenzer Architekturbüros Dietrich/Untertrifaller sah zwei Bauetappen vor: Die erste Bau-Etappe, eine Erweiterung um eine Werkstattbühne, Seefoyer und Seegalerie sowie einen quer über das Haus verlaufenden Verwaltungstrakt, wurde 1997 fertig gestellt. Das Ziel der zweiten Baustufe war die Sanierung und leichte Erweiterung des bestehenden Hauses.

Funktionale Mängel sollten behoben, der Komfort für die Besucher und die Arbeitsbedingungen für die Mitarbeiter verbessert werden.

Nach mehrjähriger Planung wurde der Umbau am Tag nach dem Ende der Bregenzer Festspiele 2005 begonnen.

The Festival House in Bregenz is the biggest and most modern event centre between Munich and Zurich. In July 2006, its reopening was celebrated after an overall renovation. The house had undergone a complete redecoration lasting ten months and costing just under 40 million euro.

Since its opening in 1979, the Festival House Bregenz has played host to about 6.500 events and 6,5 million visitors .Still, the house as it presents itself to its visitors today is the result of a continous development. In 1992, only 13 years after its opening, an architectural competition took place in which plans for the enlargement of the house were proposed. The conceptual design of the architects Dietrich/Untertrifaller from Bregenz, who were still largely unknown at that time, intended two construction stages: The first stage, an enlargement including a workshop stage, a lake foyer and a lake gallery as well as an administrative apparatus stretching all through the building, was finished in 1997. The aim of the second construction stage was to redecorate and enlarge the existing house even further.

Functional defects needed to be repaired, the visitors` comfort and the employees`working conditions were to be improved. After several years‘ planning, the construction work started just one day after the end of the Bregenz Festival 2005.

Modernes Ambiente Heute präsentiert sich das Festspielhaus dem Besucher mit ganz neuem Gesicht: Statt grauen Betons empfängt eine helle, lichtdurchflutete Glasfassade die Gäste. In einem markanten, über den Eingangsbereich auf den Vorplatz auskragenden Bauteil, ist der neue Veranstaltungssaal „propter homines“ untergebracht. Im Erdgeschoss befindet sich ein neues Bistro, das ganzjährig auch außerhalb von Veranstaltungen geöffnet ist. Auch Ticketcenter und Garderoben sind im Eingangsbereich situiert. Von dort aus führt eine zentrale Treppe Besucher ins großzügige Foyer im ersten Stock, das alle Veranstaltungsräume erschließt. Hier entstanden auch neue Multifunktionsflächen, die etwa während der Festspielzeit als Künstlergarderoben und den Rest des Jahres als Veranstaltungsräume nutzbar sind. Herzstück des Festspielhauses ist der Große Saal, der sich mit einer Wandverkleidung und Parkettböden aus Akazienholz nun modern und edel präsentiert. Der VeranstaltungsRohdiamant jedoch ist die Werkstattbühne – ein Saal, mit ganz besonderem Flair, in dem schon zahlreiche hochkarätige Veranstaltungen stattgefunden haben. Am letzten Augustwochenende dieses Jahres wird er anlässlich des 1st annual Smooth Jazz Festival zu einer chilligen Party-Lounge „geschliffen“.

Auch bei Bühnentechnik, Licht- und Tonanlage gab es zahlreiche Verbesserungen. Insgesamt floss rund die Hälfte des Sanierungsbudgets in die Technik des Hauses. Zum See hin entstand eine neue Festspiel-Lounge, die überdachte Sitzplätze für Veranstaltungen auf der Seebühne bietet. Seeregie und Beleuchtungseinrichtungen, bisher teils in Wellblechcontainern auf dem Dach gelegen, sind nun im Gebäude untergebracht. Und auch in punkto Klimaschutz zeigt sich der Kulturbau ökologisch vorbildlich: Der gesamte Altbestand wurde energetisch saniert. Die neue Dämmung reduziert die Wärmeverluste an den Außenmauern des Bühnenturms auf ein Drittel, beim Dach um die Hälfte. Die Klimaanlage ist mit einer Wärmerückgewinnung ausgestattet, die Heizung auf den neuesten Stand der Technik gebracht. Obwohl sich die Nutzfläche um rund 2.300 m² vergrößert hat, bleibt der Energieverbrauch konstant. Bregenz ist also gerüstet – nicht nur für die großen kulturellen Ereignisse der Zukunft…

Today, the Festival House presents itself in a new light: Instead of grey concrete, a bright glass facade flooded with light welcomes the guests.The new event hall „propter homines “ is situated in a striking architectural element which rises over the entrance area. In the ground floor a new bistro welcomes guests all year around. The ticket centre and cloakrooms are also located in the entrance area. From here, a central staircase leads visitors into the generous entrance hall on the first floor which opens to all event rooms. New multifunctional areas have been integrated into this complex as well, which can be used as artist‘s cloakrooms during the festival season or as event rooms during the rest of the year. The “Große Saal” is the heart of the Festival House, and provides an ambiance both elegant and modern with acacia wood panelling and parquet floors. Nevertheless, the raw diamond for any event is the “Werkstattbühne” – a hall with quite a unique atmosphere in which numerous high-ranking events have already taken place. On the last weekend of August this year, it will transform into a chill-out party lounge on the occasion of the 1st annual Smooth a jazz festival..

As to stage technique, lighting system and sound arrangement numerous improvements have been made, too. As much as half of the renovation budget has been invested into the technology of the Festival House. A new festival performance lounge was built, which faces the lake and accommodates guests watching events on the lake stage under roof.. Now the lake stage direction and lighting facilities, which used to be situated in part in corrugated sheet containers on the roof, are integrated into the main building. Moreover, the Festival House sets an ecological example regarding climate protection: The power supply system of the whole building has been refurbished to match the latest ecological standards: new insulation reduces the heat losses to one third on the stage towers’ facade and to about 50 % on the roof. The air-conditioning has been equipped with a heat recovery system, the heating has been modernised. And although the floor space has grown by about 2,300 square metres, the energy consumption remains steady. So Bregenz is prepared – not only for the big cultural events of the future …

It`s so Bond

Bregenz in geheimer Mission James Bond kämpfte bereits im Angesicht des Todes und rettete die Welt vor GoldenEye. Sein aktuelles Abenteuer führte den Agenten in geheimer Mission nun unter anderem nach Bregenz, wo das Auge der Tosca auf der Seebühne eine mehr als würdige Kulisse für den neuen 007-Streifen „Quantum of Solace“ bildete.

In den Bars in Bregenz wird noch immer mehr geschüttelt als gerührt. Kein Wunder, denn auch nach Abschluss der Dreharbeiten mit Daniel Craig, alias Bond - James Bond - grassiert das äußerst ansteckende Bond-Fieber in der Bodensee-Metropole. Begonnen hatten die Spionageaktivitäten bereits im April letzten Jahres, als in der Presseabteilung der Bregenzer Festspiele das Telefon klingelte.

Ein anonymer Anrufer aus London ließ sich über das bevorstehende Festspielprogramm informieren, bat um die Zusendung von Bildern der Seebühne und wollte sich in der „kommenden Zeit vielleicht wieder melden“ wegen eines „kleinen Filmdrehs“. Es dauerte zwei Wochen bis die selbe Stimme wieder anrief und meinte: „Hello, this is the James Bond company. Can we talk strictly confidential?“ Ja, man habe mittlerweile großes Interesse an einem Filmdreh auf der Seebühne und benötige weitere Bilder, Pläne, Spieltermine, Probenzeiten, Sängerbiografien und vor allem eines: Strikte Geheimhaltung! „Wir kommen!“, hieß es dann wenige Wochen später.

Zwar nicht zum Dreh, aber zu einem ersten Geheimtreffen samt Besichtigung der Location.

Für eine Klavierprobe kurz vor der „Tosca“-Premiere im vergangenen Juli kündigte sich eine hochkarätige Delegation der Bond-Produktionsfirma EON an. Über einen Strohmann buchten sich Produzenten, Regisseur, Kameramänner und Assistenten inkognito in einem Vorarlberger Hotel ein, um vor Ort ungestört die Möglichkeiten eines Filmdrehs zu prüfen. Obwohl während des Probenprozesses das Spiel auf dem See erst im Entstehen war und die Filmleute damit eine noch unfertige „Tosca“ sahen, überzeugte das Regiekonzept im ersten Augenblick. „It‘s so Bond“, meinte später einer der Filmproduzenten zur Bregenzer „Tosca“ in Anspielung auf das riesige Auge und dessen Verwendung in bisherigen 007-Filmen. „Das Auge stellt für mich eine gewisse Metapher für die Bondfilme dar“, formulierte auch Regisseur Marc Forster.

Top Secret Während der fast einjährigen Vorbereitungszeit für den Dreh wurde intensiv mit dem Filmteam verhandelt, die Realisierbarkeit geprüft, Szenarien durchgespielt und mit den zuständigen Behörden ein Sicherheitskonzept entwickelt. Große Aufmerksamkeit maßen die Verantwortlichen einer kompletten Absperrung des Festspielgeländes

bei. Denn die Erfahrungen anderer Drehorte zeigten, dass der große Bekanntheitsgrad der Filmstaffel auch großen Rummel bei Fans, Schaulustigen und Medien auslöst. Rund um das Festspielhaus entstand deshalb ein Schutzzaun, der an vier „Grenzübergängen“ nur mit korrektem Barcode auf dem Hausausweis durchquert werden konnte. Selbst den Luftraum über der Seebühne ließ der Technikmanager ím Bregenzer Festspielhaus, Stefan Rippl, sperren, um die Filmaufnahmen vor fliegenden Paparazzi zu schützen.

Und auch auf dem Wasserweg war zum Schutz vor Eindringlingen bis auf 300 Meter Distanz zur Seebühne eine Verbotszone eingerichtet worden, die die deutsche und österreichische Wasserschutzpolizei abwechselnd kontrollierten. Übertrieben seien diese Maßnahmen nicht gewesen, erklärt Rippl, denn mehrmals versuchten Fans und Medienvertreter, sich bei den Dreharbeiten einzuschleichen.

So auch ein übereifriges TV-Team eines deutschen Privatsenders, das mit motorisiertem Schlauchboot per Schleichfahrt am hinteren Teil der Seebühne anlegen wollte, aber gerade noch rechtzeitig gestoppt werden konnte. Und nicht nur die technischen Abteilungen, auch die „Tosca“-Künstler standen vor enormen Herausforderungen.

007-Fakten James Bond, auch bekannt als 007, ist ein fiktiver Agent des britischen Geheimdiensts. 1952 vom Schriftsteller Ian Fleming erfunden, wurde er vor allem durch die erfolgreiche Filmreihe zu einer Ikone der Populärkultur. Die Darsteller des Superagenten – die Bekanntesten sind Ur-Bond Sean Connery („James Bond jagt Dr. No), der ironische Roger Moore („Octopussy“), Pierce Brosnan („GoldenEye“) und zuletzt der raue Daniel Craig („Casino Royale“) – haben es meist mit Gegnern zu tun, die die Weltherrschaft an sich reißen wollen. Um das zu verhindern, reist 007 an exotische Plätze in aller Welt und überlebt dort irrwitzige Situationen. Die Bösewichter – darunter Kaliber wie Gert Fröbe, Christopher Walken oder Klaus Maria Brandauer – sind ebenso wie die Bond-Girls (legendär: Ursula Andress) und andere Begleiter - etwa der Aston Martin, die Walther PPK und der unvermeidliche Martini – Fixsterne im 007-Universum. James Bond wird unterstützt von zahlreichen technischen Spielereien (erfunden von „Q“) sowie seiner in ihn verliebten Sekretärin „Miss Moneypenny“. Denn im Gegensatz zur sommerlichen Festspielzeit, können die Temperaturen während einer Aprilnacht deutlich unter zehn Grad fallen. Wegen der dünnen Bühnenkostüme und der langen Drehzeiten - die „Te Deum“-Szene wurde pro Drehnacht bis zu 40 Mal wiederholt - schlüpften die Solisten in warme Skiunterwäsche.

Beute für Souvenir-Jäger Viel dürfe er nicht verraten über den Inhalt des Films, sagt Rippl, aber „James Bond jagt Bösewichte über die ‚Tosca‘-Bühne und durchs Festspielhaus.“ Die Foyers, der Vorplatz und selbst die FestspielhausKüche hätten den Bond-Regisseur Marc Forster neben der „Tosca“Bühne derart inspiriert, dass das gesamte Areal zum Drehort wurde.

Als Höhepunkt nennt der Technikmanager einen spektakulären Einsatz von Stunt-Leuten auf dem Dach des Festspielhauses. Für die Szenen im Festspielhaus wurden „kosmetische Anpassungen“ vorgenommen, wie Rippl augenzwinkernd berichtet. Die Filmtechniker gingen dabei mit großer Akribie, fast schon detailversessen zu Werke. So baute man im identischen Architekturstil eine komplette Toilette nach, um sie anschließend von Filmgangstern verwüsten zu lassen. Foyerwände verkleideten die Filmleute zum Schutz vor Beschädigungen mit Holzfurnieren, die aus London eingeflogen wurden. Selbst spezielle „Tosca“-Plakate und Abendprogramme im Bond-Design ließen die Filmverantwortlichen drucken - seit Drehschluss heiß begehrte und hochgehandelte Souvenirs. „Die Dreharbeiten waren für uns alle anstrengend, interessant und aufregend zugleich“, bilanziert der kaufmännische Direktor der Bregenzer Festspiele, Franz Salzmann. Was als Endergebnis der Dreharbeiten herauskomme, werde man natürlich erst bei der Filmpremiere im November 2008 sehen, sagt Salzmann weiter, aber: „Was wir auf jeden Fall schon jetzt sagen können, ist, dass die Bregenzer Festspiele, das Festspielhaus Bregenz sowie die ganze Bodenseeregion von diesem Ereignis bereits profitiert haben und sicher auch in Zukunft profitieren werden!“ Nach einem Jahr Vorbereitung, zehn Tagen Drehzeit für rund acht Minuten im neuen Bond-Streifen „Quantum of Solace“ - auf Deutsch „Ein Quäntchen Trost“ - „brauche ich jetzt erst einmal ein Quäntchen Schlaf“, grinst Stefan Rippl. „Denn für die Filmpremiere im November möchte ich wieder fit sein“. Top secret – On mission in Bregenz James Bond has fought in many movies already and has saved the world again in every single one. His recent adventure led the secret agent amongst other things in a secret mission to Bregenz, where the “Eye of Tosca“ – played on the Seebühne – was an impressive backdrop for the new 007-Movie “Quantum of Solace”.

There is still more shaking than stirring in the bars around Bregrenz. No wonder, because even after finishing the shooting with Daniel Craig, alias Bond –James Bond – a very virulent Bond-Fever is still circulating in the Lake Constance capital. The spying had already started in April last year when the phone rang in the press department of the Bregenz Festival commitee. An anonymous caller from London was gathering information on the up-coming festival program and asked for pictures of the “Seebühne“. Moreover, the caller assured that he would be back in touch shortly to discuss “a little shooting”.

It took 2 weeks until the same voice was back on the phone and announced “Hello, this is the James Bond company. Can we talk strictly confidentially?” And the voice continued, talking about a very great interest in doing a shooting on the “Seebühne“, and more pictures, plans, playing and rehearsal schedules, biographies of the singers and first of all: “utmost secrecy“ were demanded. Some weeks after that, the voice just said: “We are coming!“ Though not for shooting that time, but for a first secret meeting with an inspection of the location itself.

A top-class delegation of the Bond-Production-Company EON announced their attendance of a piano rehearsal shortly before the “Tosca“-opening night last July. Producers, director, cameramen and assistants checked in in a Vorarlberg Hotel incognito to study the possibilities of a shooting in an undisturbed way. Though the performance on the lake was just in the process of being created in the rehearsals and the movie people only saw a premature “Tosca“, the concept was instantly convicing. “It´s so Bond“ one of the producers said as a hint at the huge eye used in the Bregenz “Tosca“ play and it´s usage in the previous 007-Movies. “In my opinion, the eye has a certain metaphoric meaning all through the Bond movies”, as director Marc Forster put it.

Top Secret During the preparation period of nearly one year for the shooting, negotiations with the filmcrew took place, feasabilities were checked, takes were shot and a security concept was developed together with the local authorities. Great attention was payed to a complete barrier of the festival precinct by the authorities, too, as the experiences gathered on other sets clearly foretold how much trouble and irritation could be incited by a well-known filmcrew. A security fence was built around the festival theatre, which could only be crossed with a valid barcode attached to the theatre-ID. Even the airspace above the “Seebühne“ had been blocked out to prevent airborne paparazzi from taking pictures, and moreover the German and Austrian coast guard established a 300m exclusion zone to block out intruders from the waterway.

“No overreaction”, stated Stefan Rippl, technical manager of the Festspielhaus Bregenz. “Fans and media people tried more than once to creep onto the set.” Thus, a mighty effort was undertaken by an overeager German TV-Team, which intended to put their motor-boat to the rear-end of the “Seebühne“ and could only be stopped just in time. Not only the technical units, but also the “Tosca“-artist had to face enormous challenges, because in contrast to the summerly festival season the temperature in April could drop down to less than 10 degrees during night. Due to the very thin costumes and the long shooting hours – the “Te Deum“-scene had to be repeated almost 40 times during one night of shooting – the soloists slipped into warm underwear.

Prey for the souvenir hunters “He`s not allowed to tell a lot”, Rippl said, “but James Bond chases the bad guys across the ‘Tosca’ stage and the theatre. The lounge, the areaway and even the theatre´s kitchen have inspired director Marc Forster – besides the “Tosca” stage itself – so much, that the whole area was declared to be the set. The technical manager staged a spectacular take on the theatre´s roof to be the highlight. He also reported, winking, that some cosmetic correction had been necessary for the takes inside of the theatre. The technical crew showed an almost nit-picky way of working. A complete toilet was built in an identical architectural style only to be destroyed by the thugs in the movie. The film-crew protected the lounge´s walls with wood panels that had been flewn in from London. Even custom-built „Tosca“-posters and evening programs furnished with a Bond-Design had been printed – very soughtafter and expensive souvenirs since the end of the shooting.

“The shooting was very exhausting, interesting and thrilling at the same time for all of us“, Franz Salzmann, commercial director of the Bregenz festival, resumed. The final result of the shooting will not be known until the premiere of the film in November this year, Salzmann stated furthermore, but “the theatre and the whole ‘Bodensee’-area have already got their piece of the cake and will surely benefit from the aftermath”. After a year of preparation, ten days of shooting – all for 8 minutes in the new Bond movie “Quantum of Solace“, “now the time is right to get a ‘Quantum of sleep’”, Stefan Rippl said grinning. “Because, of course, I want to be fit until November when the film premieres.”

In den Hauptrollen des Bregenzer Kulturangebotes sind neben den Festspielen noch zahlreiche andere hochkarätige Akteure zu finden – etwa das Kunsthaus Bregenz. Seit seiner Eröffnung im Jahre 1997 hat sich das KUB zu einem vielbesuchten Zentrum für moderne Kunst entwickelt.

Es ist ein Ort, der Kunst gewidmet, und den Menschen, die dieser in Ruhe begegnen möchten. Das war die Aufgabe, der sich der Schweizer Architekt Peter Zumthor in seinem Entwurf verpflichtet hat und der in der Konsequenz daraus ein Gebäude geschaffen hat, das zwar als Solitär selbstbewusst an der Uferlinie des Bodensees Position bezieht, in seiner Form und Beschaffenheit jedoch bewusst schlicht gehalten ist. Außen tritt es mit seiner gläsernen Fassade in ein interessantes Wechselspiel mit seiner Umgebung. Peter Zumthor: „Das Kunsthaus steht im Licht des Bodensees. Von außen betrachtet, wirkt das Gebäude wie ein Leuchtkörper. Es nimmt das wechselnde Licht des Himmels, das Dunstlicht des Sees in sich auf, strahlt Licht und Farbe zurück und lässt, je nach Blickwinkel, Tageszeit und Witterung etwas von seinem Innenleben erahnen.”

Während sich außen also stetig wechselnde Lichtstimmungen und Reflexe auf die Haut des Gebäudes projizieren, ist sein Inneres ganz der Inszenierung der Kunst gewidmet. Großzügige, weitläufige Räume aus schwarzem, fugenlos gegossenen und geschliffenem Terrazzoboden, getragen von drei Wandscheiben aus Sichtbeton, bilden einen dezenten Rahmen um die wechselnden Ausstellungen; sanft einfallendes Tageslicht sowie zurückhaltend eingesetztes Kunstlicht tauchen den Raum in indifferentes Licht und geben die Bühne frei für die Exponate – die eigentlichen Highlights der Show.

Nur nachts wird auch das Gebäude selbst zur Show, dann nämlich, wenn nicht das Licht des Tages in seinem Innenraum, sondern das Licht seines Innenraums in der Nacht erstrahlt… (sh)

Apart from the Festival, the cultural life in Bregenz has a number of other high-ranking protagonists on offer – like the Kunsthaus Bregenz. Since its opening 1997 it has become a visitor attraction for contemporary art.

It is a place dedicated to art and to the people who want to enjoy it in peace and quiet. With his building design, the famous Swiss architect Peter Zumthor has committed himself to offering such a space. He consequently created a building which, as a solitaire, confidently takes position on the shore of Lake Constance whilst being minimalistic in form and character. Its glazed outside façade interacts with this context in an inspiring way.

Peter Zumthor: “The Kunsthaus is set in the light of Lake Constance. Seen from the outside, the building appears as a light cube. It receives the changing light of the sky and the twilight of the lake, and in turn emits light and colour, and therefore allows the spectator glimpses of its interior depending on the time of day and on the weather.“ While the ambiances of daylight and its reflections are projected onto the building’s outward skin, the interior is entirely dedicated to the arts. Wide and spacious rooms of jointlessly purred and polished terrazzo flooring are framed by three fair faced concrete wall panes and thus create a subtle stage for the exhibits – the actual highlight of the show.

It is only at night that the building itself steps into the limelight, when the daylight does not alight the interior any more but the interior alights the night…

Richard Serra sieht im Zeichnen einen der wenigen Zustände, in denen er die Quelle seines Werkes verstehen kann.

Das KUB widmet ihm mit über 70 Zeichnungen aus den Jahren 1989 – 2008, darunter über 20 großformatige, zum Teil wandfüllende Arbeiten, eine umfangreiche Werkschau, wie sie so bisher in Europa noch nicht gezeigt worden ist. Geordnet auf vier Stockwerken vereint die Ausstellung die kunsthistorisch wichtigen Werkgruppen Castelli Diptychons (1989), Weights and Measures (1994), Rounds (1997) und Out of Rounds (1999) mit zwei für Bregenz neu entstandenen Werkgruppen. Neben 25 Line Drawings hat Richard Serra für das Erdgeschoss eine neue Serie seiner seltenen Forged Drawings geschaffen. Er greift mit diesen aus massivem Eisen geschmiedeten und mit schwarzer Wachskreide „bezeichneten“ Wandelementen eine Form auf, die er erstmals 1977 entwickelt hat. Das Kunsthaus Bregenz ermöglicht mit dieser Ausstellung einen wichtigen Blick in die Werkstatt eines der bedeutendsten Bildhauer und Zeichner unserer Zeit. Richard Serra, der 2007 die bisher größte Schau seines Lebens im Museum of Modern Arts New York zeigte, betrachtet die Folge von Zeichnungen für das Kunsthaus Bregenz als eine rückblickende Erzählung an der Wand, in der das Zeichnen ihm als analytisches Werkzeug dient, das ihm erlaubt, die Welt zu begreifen. Zeitgleich zu der Ausstellung in Bregenz präsentiert Richard Serra in Paris im Grand Palais eine monumentale Skulpturengruppe.

For more than 40 years, Richard Serra has been creating sculptural orders from material, masses, space and movement. His steel sculptures, some of which are huge, are among the most important contributions to contemporary sculpture. Furthermore, Serra`s extensive oeuvre of drawings shows a specific materiality, with a material density comparable to the sculptures. To Richard Serra, drawing consititutes one of the few states in which he can understand the sources of his creation.

With more than 70 drawings from 1989-2008, some of which fill a whole wall, the Kunsthaus Bregenz dedicates itself to an elaborate exhibition and European premiere. Arranged on four floors, the exhibition puts together works which have been desicive in the history of art: Castelli Diptychons (1989), Weights and Measures (1994), Rounds (1997) and out of Rounds (1999) with two new sets of works created for Bregenz. Apart form 25 Line Drawings, Richard Serra has created a series of his rare Foged Drawings for the ground floor. With these massive forged iron wall elements painted with black wax-crayon, he goes back to a form he first developed in 1977. With this exhibition the Kunsthaus Bregenz allows a view into the workshop of one of the most important sculptors and painters of our time.

Richard Serra, who presented his largest show so far in the Museum of Modern Arts, New York in 2007, considers the sequence of drawings for the Kunsthaus Bregenz a retrospective story on the wall. He uses drawing as an analytic tool which allows him to understand the world. Parallel to the exhibition in Bregenz he presents a monumental group of sculptures in the Grand Palais in Paris.

Jan Fabre, bildender Künstler, Stückeschreiber, Regisseur, ist einer der ungewöhnlichsten künstlerischen Doppelbegabungen in der Theater- und Kunstwelt. Neben seinen weltweit gezeigten Tanz- und Theaterproduktionen und Inszenierungen für Festivals und Opernhäuser unter anderem in Avignon, Paris, Brüssel, Kassel und in diesem Sommer für die Salzburger Festspiele existiert ein bildnerisches Oeuvre von geradezu manischer Opulenz. Immer an der Grenze zwischen Tag und Nacht, changierend zwischen Realität und Traum, schafft er berückende Bildwerke, die gleichzeitig im „Garten der Lüste“ und den Wachträumen mittelalterlicher Tableaus eines Hieronymus Bosch zu Hause sind und den kalten Schrecken einer an Duchamps Readymade-Idee orientierten Objektwelt besitzen. Seine bizarren Mischungen aus Tier- und Menschmetamorphosen, das stark auto-erotische Moment und die komplexen installativen Verzahnungen aus entlehnten und erlebten Bildern zeigen eine Welt, die mit herkömmlichen künstlerischen Maßstäben nur schwer zu messen ist.

Für das Kunsthaus Bregenz inszeniert Jan Fabre seine erste große Museumsausstellung in Österreich mit neuen raumgreifenden skulpturalen Tableaus auf fünf Ausstellungsebenen zu einer mythischen Welt des Schreckens und der Schönheit, des Traums und der Metamorphose.

Gemeinsam mit dem britischen Bildhauer Antony Gormley plant das Kunsthaus Bregenz für den Sommer 2009 eine Einzelausstellung im KUB und parallel hierzu ein großes Landschaftsprojekt in Vorarlberg.

Antony Gormley zählt zu den wichtigsten Künstlern weltweit und ist einer der bedeutendsten zeitgenössischen Bildhauer Großbritanniens.

In seinem Werk geht es zentral um den Menschen uns seine komplexen Beziehungen zur Gesellschaft, zur Architektur und zur Natur. Im Mittelpunkt seines Schaffens steht der menschliche Körper, in immer wieder neuen skulpturalen Konstellationen als Einzelfiguren und in großen Ensembles präsentiert.

Horizon Field ist ein horizontales Feld von 100 lebensgroßen Eisen-Abgüssen eines menschlichen Körpers auf 2.035 m Seehöhe. Die Skulpturen sind verteilt auf über 100 Quadratkilometer im Gebiet zwischen Diedamskopf und Schnepfau im Norden, Lech mit der Roten Wand und der Rüfispitze im Süden, Lechleiten und Mittelberg im Osten sowie Damüls mit der Mittagsspitze und Sonntag mit dem Breithorn im Westen. Von jedem Punkt aus sollte es möglich sein, mindestens eines der Werke zu sehen. Die Idee dieses Feldes ist die Verbindung von Sehen und Gesehen-Werden mit der zentralen Rolle des Menschen uns seiner Beziehung zur Alpenlandschaft. Die 100 Figuren von Antony Gormley sind Abgüsse vom Körper des Künstlers in vollem Eisenguss.

2008 werden die Fundamente vorbereitet, 2009 werden die Figuren selbst an den entsprechenden Standorten aufgestellt und 2010 wird die „Ausstellung“ abgebaut.

In cooperation with the British sculptor Antony Gormley, the Kunsthaus Bregenz is planning a single exhibition and, at the same time, a huge landscape project in Voralberg in the summer of 2009. Antony Gormley is one of the most important artists in the world and certainly Britain’s most important contemporary sculptor. The human being is the focus of his work as well as its complex relation to society, architecture and nature. The centre of his work is the human body, always presented in different and new sculptural constellations, both as a singular figure and huge installation.

Jan Fabre Todesboten enthauptet Jan Fabre, sculptor, author, director, is one of the most extraordinary talents in the world of theatre and art. Apart from his dance and theatre productions performed worldwide and producations for festivals and operas, for example in Avignon, Paris, Brussels, Kassel and for the festival in Salzburg this summer, there exists a sculptural oeuvre of his of almost magical opulence. Always at the edge between day and night and oscillating between reality and dream, he creates oppressive artworks which seem to be at home both in the ‘gardens of passion’ and the daydreams of Hieronymus Bosch`s medieval tableaus, and posses the cold fear of a world orientated on Duchamps ready-mades. His bizarre mixture of animal and human metamorphosis, the strong auto-erotic aspect and the complex installated interlockings of borrowed and self-experienced pictures open up a world which is almost impossible to measure on conventional artistic scales.

Horizon Field consists of a hundred true scale iron casts of a human body, 2035m above sea level. The sculptures are placed within an area of 100km² from “Diademskopf” and “Schnepfau” in the north, Lech with the “Rote Wand” and the “Rüfispitze” in the south, “Mittelberg” in the east and Damüls with the “Mittagsspitze” and Sonntag with the “Breithorn” in the west. It is supposed to be possible to see at least one of the sculptures from any possible point of view. The concept of this field is the relationship between seeing and being seen with the central role of mankind and its connection to the alpine landscape. Antony Gormley’s 100 Figures are moulds of his own body cast in massive iron. Foundations will be prepared in 2008, the figures themselves will be set in 2009, and 2010 the exhibition will be dismantled.
