Wildlife Wonders WNC Nature Center
Each time Kate Frost wanders into the WNC Nature Center in Asheville, she can’t help but be overjoyed by the animals she sees and the unforgettable experiences she takes away from each visit.
“Every time I get a chance, I go to a wildlife park,” Frost said. “It’s [for] the children at heart [as an adult] who always want to learn, who love animals and nature.”
As the executive director of the Friends of the WNC Nature Center, Frost oversees a conservation organization that “inspires a passion to know more, care more, and do more for the wildlife of the Southern Appalachians.”
“And there’s nothing better than people who have reached out to say, ‘I went there as a kid, and now I’m taking my kids,’” Frost said. “This truly is such an intergenerational place, and so many people are finding so many di erent things from it
For 2025, the WNC Nature Center is celebrating two big milestones. The 100th anniversary of the opening of the (now-defunct) Recreation Park Zoo in Asheville in 1925, and the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Friends of the WNC Nature Center in 1975. To note, the center itself was launched in 1977.
“What’s unique about the center is that it’s a wildlife park that specifically focuses on animals who li e or ha e li ed in the Southern Appalachian Mountains,” Frost noted. “This is a really great way to actually see the animals you might find in your bac yard, or could ha e found if you li ed here fi e million years ago
With one of the most diverse ecosystems on the entire planet, Western North Carolina is home to countless species of plants and animals. And even in a modern world of technology and distraction, the center remains a vital force in reconnecting humans to the intrinsic value of nature in our everyday lives.
“The Nature Center allows you to be up close and personal with [animals],” Frost said. “And we’ve found through outreach and education that until you have a true connection [with animals and nature] — to feel, learn, and use your senses with an animal — you may not have the connection we feel they would want in order to try to conserve [these creatures] in the future.”
Some of those native animals onsite at the 42-acre zoological park include the black bear, bobcat, red wolf, cougar, coyote, river otter, box turtle, gray fox, barn owl, and many more. Visitors can also see pygmy goats, angora goats, donkeys, skunks, and a red panda, as well as an array of snakes and turtles.
“When you’re walking the Nature Center, you’re going to see red wolves, then you walk a couple hundred feet and see our coyotes, and, in that moment, you can see there’s a distinct di erence, rost said
For Frost and her colleagues, the ethos at the foundation of the nature center is “the more you know, the more you care, the more you do.”
“Education is really at the heart of conservation,” Frost said. “And that’s what we hope to do here at the Nature Center: make sure people are aware of and learning about the species in this region, so that they can preserve them.”
Strolling the center, Frost will observe folks of all walks of life, age, and backgrounds. Kids, adults, and the elderly all coming together and enjoying the timeless beauty of nature first hand nd it’s a feeling of gratitude for Frost to know she’s part of who and what is ensuring the preservation and perpetuation of the center for future generations.
“You know, when you’re watching a group of ids on a field trip, and you see the wonder and curiosity sparked?” Frost posed. “It gives you hope for the future.”

A Creative Gathering Place Bascom Center for the Visual Arts
Situated on the far end of downtown Highlands, atop the “Plateau” (elevation: 4,118 feet) that straddles Macon and Jackson counties and its bucolic mountain setting, is the Bascom Center for the Visual Arts.
t’s a di erent mindset up here, and a di erent feeling, said Billy o e, e ecuti e director of he Bascom nd we’re ery fortunate to be in an area where there’s an importance placed on the arts
ith a een focus on ma ing e posure to the arts through e hibition and outreach programming ery accessible, he Bascom is a free
admission organi ation t also o ers members, residents, and isitors ali e hundreds of classes and wor shops throughout the year
nd we do e tensi e wor out in the community o site, o e said, partnering with a ariety of nonprofits to bring arts programming to their locations
The Bascom campus sits on six acres, with the main building hovering around 27,500 square feet. Beyond the galleries, workshop areas, gift shop, and o ces, there’s also a second component to the property, which is the outdoors — where art and nature blend seamlessly.
“There are no gates, and we really like being a gathering place like that,” Love said. “And I see hikers all the time using the nature trails onsite en if you don’t come inside the building, you can take advantage of the campus.”
The long, winding story of The Bascom begins with artist Watson Barratt and his wife, Louise Bascom Barratt, who were parttime residents of Highlands for many years. Upon his passing, Barratt earmarked funds for an art gallery to be placed in the existing Hudson Library.
Formed in 1985, The Bascom initially started out as the Bascom-Louise Gallery within the library, a space that also hosted classes and exhibits. By 1999, the highly-popular gallery became its own nonprofit, which led to the construction and opening of the current center in 2009.
“We were in growth mode for many of those years, trying to work out all of the kinks and bugs in going from one room in a public library to a 25,000-squarefoot facility, o e noted hat’s a big change, so having the opportunity to settle in and find what works for the organization [has been key].”
Even in the here and now, The Bascom is constantly thinking of ways to better itself and what it can o er the community
“And the exciting part [today] is looking towards the future,” o e said e’ e hit that stage
of the game where we’re feeling confident in our programming, feeling confident in our fundraising. What do we do next? How do we expand programming and serve even greater audiences?”
With a main showcase of contemporary artists, The Bascom works in tandem with living and working artists, which has parlayed itself into countless partnerships within these professional opportunities.
here’s a real need for a place where living artists can exhibit,” o e said nd we’re pro iding opportunities for not only those emerging artists, but [also] those established academic practitioners that are teaching the next generation.”
When it comes to community education and the arts, o e can’t emphasize the importance of that active connectivity enough.
“The data is clear in having access to some kind of creative practice,” o e said t’s beneficial on a myriad of levels — emotional wellbeing, mental health positives — especially in young people learning those creative skills of collaboration, critical thinking, and problem solving that will serve them their entire lives.”
e ecting on ighlands itself, o e can’t help but be grateful for the artistic amenities that reside in the small town. Whether it be the numerous galleries in downtown, the Highlands Performing Arts Center, summer concert series, or the highly-anticipated Highlands Food & Wine Festival taking place every fall.
“I think your community is not complete without the arts,” Love said. “And I want to live in a place that has access to arts and culture. I think many people do.”

Distilling Distinction Two Trees Beverage Company
Not far from the intersection of Hendersonville Road and Old Airport Road in Fletcher sits a somewhat nondescript warehouse. Although the building itself doesn’t necessarily stand out, what’s inside is something unique and innovative: Two Trees Beverage Company.
“Meeting people that come in here, or being somewhere and somebody tries [our products] and says, ‘This is so good,’” said Chad Slagle. “I love to hear that. Having those kinds of stories is a really cool experience.”
Slagle is the co-founder and head of innovation for Two Trees. Launched in 2015, the company has become a fast-rising star in the distilling realms of whiskey, bourbon, vodka, and other products within its vast portfolio, which includes spirits for iconic distiller Tim Smith of famed Discovery Channel show “Moonshiners”.
Born and raised in Black Mountain, Slagle bounced around the country for a period as a young adult before circling back to the serene mountains of Western North Carolina. At that time, he was tinkering with an idea to “expedite the aging process of aged spirits.”
“We wanted to take the aging process from years to weeks and days,” Slagle said. “[After a lot of e perimentation , we finally came up with some stu that was really good
And one of the biggest things with this revolutionary distilling practice is that it is “sustainably matured,” where the need for the highlycoveted wood used for innumerable barrels across the entire distilling industry is greatly diminished. According to Slagle, Two Trees process utili es less than percent of the wood that is re uired in traditional barrel-aging.”
Si ty fi e to percent of an aged spirit’s profile comes from the wood, not from the distillate,” Slagle said. “So, what [our technology] allows us to do is fine tune those nuances in the wood
According to Slagle, their technology is able to extract everything from the wood in the distilling process using an energy wave that penetrates the parts of the wood that haven’t been used.
“And then it was just about sourcing product and having the right partners for wood suppliers,” Slagle said. “We had to build our own custom oven out back, where we do all of our wood toasting and charring — it’s a step-by-step process that’s been growing steadily over the years.”
ithin that e traction process, the speed by which certain a or profiles emerge from the distilled li uid, transitioning to a finished product, is almost night and day.
“So, we entered the [prestigious] SIP Awards in California. It didn’t have a category for a 24-hour whiskey, so we entered it in the ‘Single Barrel American Whisky Under 10 Years Old,’” Slagle chuckled. “And we ended up winning ‘Best of Class – Platinum,’ beating out [other] eight-year [whiskies]. We were like, ‘This actually works.’”
Slagle points to the white oak tree, whose wood is the sole species used to make whiskey and bourbon barrels. White oak is also known as a vital tree in scrubbing CO2 out of the atmosphere.
“One white oak tree takes 80 to 100 years to grow to maturity enough to make two barrels. So, can you imagine with 11 million barrels in Kentucky how many trees that is?” Slagle shook his head. “We use less than 10 percent of that wood to make the same product, which allowed us to make a much more sustainable product.”
e ecting on his ourney thus far, Slagle can’t say enough about o cials in letcher and greater enderson County, who were pi otal in bringing his vision to fruition, this mountain community of passion and progress.
“We didn’t know if we were going to be able to bring this kind of industry to this community,” Slagle noted. “And I don’t work for Henderson County. But, I’ll tell anybody, if you want to start a new business, come to Henderson County. They did everything that you would want a community to do to bring you here.”

Coming Together Chef Joe Scully
When asked just what makes Asheville such a vibrant, world-renowned culinary destination, Chef Joe Scully can sum it up pretty easily.
“Asheville has been a center for creativity since the early 1900s, and it continues to be that,” Scully said. “The city itself was receptive to something new, di erent, and better t engenders local, handcrafted products all the way from food to fine art to music
Scully opened the famed Corner Kitchen in Biltmore Village in 2004 with his longtime business partner, Kevin Westmoreland. They then launched the Chestnut restaurant downtown eight years later.
e o er interesting, handmade food, Scully said in a matter of fact tone nd we’re ust really nice about it, you now hen people come in to be with us, we are genuinely and truly grateful.”
And though those at the helm are the same, Corner Kitchen and Chestnut are ery di erent atmospheres Corner itchen radiates a co ier, at home warmth that fits the Biltmore illage neighborhood vibe, while Chestnut showcases more of an upbeat, urban setting at its location on the bustling Biltmore Avenue.
hat we learned is that it’s for them to be di erent as long as they’re the same, Scully chuc led ou’re going to get a di erent e perience, but it’s going to be from the same spirit of hospitality].”
Perusing the menus, Chestnut serves Coriander Dusted Scallops, Harissa Lamb Meatballs, Potato Crusted Verlasso Salmon, or Duck Breast Bulgogi, while Corner itchen o ers up Mushroom ellington, Togarashi Seared Halibut, Fall Squash Farro, or Pecan Crusted Trout.
“The word ‘no’ doesn’t appear on our menus anywhere,” Scully noted. “Because it’s your money. You want to change your menu item? If we can do it, we’ll do it e don’t care ll we care about is that we’re going to make sure it tastes great and looks great when it goes out.”
For Scully, the quality of his patron’s dining experience is only matched by the quality of ingredients used, something that’s highlighted by his deep support of the ppalachian Sustainable griculture Pro ect
S P , which is a regional organi ation that aims to help local farms thrive, links farmers to markets and supporters, and builds healthy communities through connections to local food.”
S P created a fa orable en ironment for people who wanted to produce food and also work with local farmers,” Scully said.
Scully is originally from New Jersey and has been in the culinary world for more than years or ing his way up the restaurant ladder by starting as a host, Scully eventually entered the storied Culinary
nstitute of merica in yde Par , ew or nd, after years wor ing at legendary spots in he Big pple including being the e ecuti e chef for the nited ations , Scully landed in she ille in
“It’s all about that 360-hospitality,” Scully said of the ethos behind his restaurants nd it’s about a high uality product at a reasonable price. I know that might sound like some sort of business school formula. But, it’s true, as long as you’re unpretentious about it and are welcoming to everybody.”
On any given night, whether it be at Chestnut or Corner Kitchen, each space comes alive with a festive atmosphere.
t’s li e hosting a party e ery single night, Scully said hen you’re in a busy restaurant, you get to be part of it — it’s really fun.”
Scully can’t help but be ama ed at how intricate and ast the food landscape has become in the mountain region. It’s a scene that’s not only produced James Beard award-winning restaurants, but also a true sense of camaraderie between one another.
e don’t ha e competition between restaurants in she ille, Scully said e ha e collaboration

Blowing Rock Art & History Museum
With its core values being to “curate, preserve, educate, [and] inspire” the folks who wander through its doors, The Blowing Rock Art & History Museum is something special to behold.
“It’s rather interesting that there’s a museum of this caliber in a town of 1,450 people,” said BRAHM Executive Director Stephan Dragisic. “Between our changing spaces and our semi-permanent history exhibition, this is not the typical museum you would see in a town this size.”
Dragisic’s sentiments are a point of pride for BRAHM. Located in the bucolic “High Country” of Western North Carolina — which includes Blowing Rock, Boone, Banner Elk, and points elsewhere — the museum is a bastion of culture, community, and connectivity.
“We present ourselves as very approachable,” Dragisic said. “And to make sure that we’re integrated into people’s lives as much as possible through not only our exhibitions, but also our educational programs and outreach.”
Beyond the brick-and-mortar museum on Ginny Stevens Lane in Blowing Rock, BRAHM actively heads out into the community. Museum sta often find themsel es bringing the arts and historical programming to senior centers, schools, daycares, and more.
“And that’s an important part of our vision for the future of the institution and the region,” Dragisic said. “On any gi en day, we interface with so many di erent people e say, B M is for all ’ e’re not ust here for one audience, we’re here for all audiences
B M has played host to an array of rotating art showcases since opening in 2011. This year, some of the e hibitions include aingerfield and the onalist nstinct, he Shape of Color nderstanding Color heory, Considerations n nstallation by Sarah aughn, Mary ou iggins Sibylline aces, and ac Boul and, City, ome
he lliot aingerfield is a ma or e hibition for us t includes wor s from three other museums and se eral pri ate collections, ragisic said t’s an attempt to show how that painting style was re ected not only during the time period of onalism about to but how it really sort of permeates all the way through into today
By featuring iggins and her e tensi e wor , the B M is aiming to not only celebrate the pieces, but also ta e a deep di e into the bac ground, inspiration, and process behind this mixed media artist who spent much of her time in orth Carolina
e’re primarily focusing on her wor from the s and s, ragisic said She’s ust a fascinating artist who has not left us much in the way of biographical information or information on her process. This e hibition is allowing us to ha e an opportunity to tal to fol s who new her and open a communication portal bac to us
ragisic and his sta are already gearing up for , which will mar the museum’s th anni ersary side from hosting ma or e hibits, the museum is also wor ing to ensure that current and future generations will always be allowed into the museum free

nd for ragisic, it’s ne er lost on him when he sees someone stroll into B M unaware of what artistic and historical beauty resides within the institution only to be happily caught o guard and o erwhelmed by what they come across.
t’s great when people come in and they ha e no idea what’s inside , ragisic said his building is designed to be aesthetically pleasing and re ect the mountains nd then they see what we’re showing and it surprises them that something li e this is in a small town
Perched nearly 4,000 feet above sea level, Grand Highlands is often described as an “open meadow atop a mountain,” o ering some of the most breathtaking views in Eastern America. Thanks to visionary conservation e orts and the generosity of local landowners, acres of surrounding untouched greenspace have been permanently protected, with an expansive network of scenic hiking trails allowing residents to connect deeply with nature.

Music, Magic and Memories Brevard Music Center
On the outskirts of downtown Brevard, tucked away in the thick forests of Transylvania County, resides the Brevard Music Center — a beloved, world-renowned facility of sound and scope.
“I didn’t expect to fall in love with this place the way I did,” said Nicholas Tzavaras, an internationally-acclaimed cellist and senior director of artistic planning and educational programs at the BMC. “The landscape, the people, the pace. It all supports the kind of musicmaking we strive for here: intentional, immersive, and grounded in community.”
Originally a summer music camp at Davidson College, the organization was founded by James Christian Pfohl in 1936. By 1944, Pfohl relocated the camp to Brevard and hosted the inaugural Brevard Music Festival in 1946. Then, in 1955, the camp was changed to the BMC.
Confidence Belonging sense that they were truly seen as artists, Tzavaras said when asked about what he wants his students to walk away from the BMC with. “I want them to leave BMC not just technically improved, but emotionally emboldened. That’s what makes this place di erent it gi es you both
On any given day, there’ll be virtuoso bluegrass pickers and symphony orchestral members wandering the campus, all either getting ready
for an educational workshop or gearing up for a sold-out performance later that e ening onstage at the hittington Pfohl uditorium he caliber of artists is only matched by the beauty of the property itself.
“Brevard is rare, in that it balances an educational mission with worldclass professional artistry,” said violinist Jason Posnock, who is also the BMC CEO and president. “You’ll see a Grammy winner performing onstage with a 19-year-old student, creating sublime music for an adoring audience. What better way is there for that student to learn? nd what better way is there for that artist to pay it forward, assuring that the art lives on for the next generation?”
Beyond the aesthetic allure of the BMC, which seamlessly blends modern architecture and nature, the centerpiece of the campus is the hittington Pfohl uditorium
“What drew me to BMC is the sincerity of its mission. It’s not about trends or prestige. It’s about the work, the music-making,” Tzavaras said. “You’ll see a Mahler symphony one night and Béla Fleck the next, and both are treated with the same integrity. That says a lot.”
The picturesque open-air, 1,800-seat pavilion-style venue was built in 1964 and is a testament to the energy and magic conjured from both sides of the microphone.
“Being part of a live concert is to be fully engaged in the creative process — whether on the stage, back in the wings, or sitting in the audience,” Posnock said. “I love to drink in the excitement of students performing great music, the concentration of the production crew, and the sense of awe that comes over the audience as they embark on their musical journey.”
One of the marquee events each year at the BMC is the Mountain Song Festival. Taking place every September, the gathering is a benefit for the Cindy Platt Boys & Girls Club of Transylvania County. Featuring some of the biggest names in Americana, bluegrass, and country music, this year’s lineup will showcase Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives, Steep Canyon Rangers, Peter Rowan, and Darrell Scott.
“There’s an authenticity to what we do here — it’s real, it’s vulnerable, and it’s powerful,” Posnock said. “The arts have never mattered more than they do right now. It has never been more important for young people to be able to express themselves through music, or for audiences to join together in shared experiences that can touch their collective soul.”
