Club News The holidays are over and I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season!

We only had six skeet shooters at our tournament in December. They shot 900 targets with the Ford family leading all the events. Ed Sr. led the 12 gauge event and Ed Jr. led the 20. 28, .410, and HOA. Nice shooting!

The trapshoot was attended by twenty shooters who shot at 3,250 targets.

FTA Hall of Famer Angel Estevez led the Singles by two with a lone 97.

Pablo Gonzalez followed in RunnerUp spot with a lone 95. Alex Riera led the Handicap with an 87 and Jerry Bryant and Joe Bilecki were RunnersUp with 86’s. The Doubles were led

by Jerry Bryant and Marilyn Lehrfeld with 90’s.

The County will not be taking over the registered shoots for the club. They decided it was not cost effective so it will remain with the club.

On page 11 the accomplishments of one of our Youth Shooters, Reanna Frauens is acknowledged. Be sure and congratulate her. All of her hard work has paid off!

Finally, notice was sent out about the passing of Wilson McMillan. I would appreciate any pictures anyone may have of Wilson for next month’s issue.

I would like to run a memorial for him.

The Bud Wolfe Classic always finishes the year for the club. Forty-eight shooters participated in the event which was one of the lowest turnouts ever for this event. All-American Brad Kidd led all shooters with a lone 97.

Rodrigo Mehich was Runner-Up with a 94. AA shooter Thomas Black turned in a 93 to take his class.

As you can see by the opposite page, construction on the new Palm Beach County club continues to move forward. The rifle and pistol range is scheduled to open in late spring. As far as I know work on the clay shooting facilities has not begun yet. I will keep you updated.

Magazine Review TRAP & FIELD – December 2018 We have some basic Doubles advice from Ian Darroch this month. I have always used light 8’s on the first shot and 1200 fps 8’s or 7 ½’s on the second shot, both at 1 1/8 oz. Ian likes 1180 fps 1 ounce 8’s for the first shot and 1235 to 1250 fps 7 ½’s, 1 1/8 ounce on the second shot. Oddly he believes if you like to shoot the same shell for both shots, shoot 1145 fps, 1 1/8, 8’s. Personally, I would shoot 1200 fps, 1 1/8, 8’s for both shots if I was only going to shoot one type of shell.

As to equipment, he likes 30” barrels and insists on shooting something above 60/40 for POI. As to choke selection he makes the statement that the old standard for fixed choke guns was IM and Full. I remember them all being Mod. and Full. He believes IC and Skeet are too open for the first shot and I agree with him. As to first choke preference, Modified or above is fine.

Magazine Review Shotgun Sports – January 2019 If you are looking for an article to explain some of swing methods in the shotgun sports Mark H. Taylor has written one this month. Not really anything groundbreaking to report about it.

When I read the monthly articles in all the shooting magazines, I highlight passages and write these reviews based on what’s highlighted. Michael J. Keyes, M.D. writes long scientifically researched articles and always has some key point of interest to the shooter.

Do we need the explanation? Some of us like it and I am sure others would rather he just get to the point. This month I highlighted something that resonated in John Shima’s article in CLAYTARGET – NATION. Michael says “Consistency, precision and accuracy are the hallmarks of a good shooter”. John says “Great shooters just concentrate on the process and focus on the targets, better and more consistently, than good shooters”. The key word here is consistency. The better shooters replicate what they do more consistently than the average shooters.

Perhaps in the new year we should all work on our consistency with a little more vigor.

they think they are right on the target when in fact they are two feet in front.

Paul Giambrone III addresses an issue I see occasionally in Skeet. Some shooters have problems with the incoming Low 1 and Low 8 (right-handers – left-handers it would be High 7 and High 8). According to Paul their off-eye takes over and they shoot in front of the target all the while believing they are behind it. I’ve seen this in action and yes, universally the shooters believe they are behind the target.

Paul also suggests moving the hold point and look point further out to reduce the distance the shooter swings to the target. I can’t disagree with this, but I usually recommend this for shooters who are shooting behind a target where the swing is longer than on other targets. High 5 is the best example. Shooters have a long swing and it is known as one of the most missed targets for right-handers. I guess Low 3 would be the equivalent target for left-handers.

Paul’s solution calls for closing the off-eye when confronting these targets. I believe it’s a good idea. You don’t need peripheral vision for these targets and closing one eye causes no disadvantage for targets where the flight path is known and the distance from the shooter is under 20 yards. The target is approaching the shooter, reducing the distance between them and the target meaning it is getting larger and more distinct. Try closing your eye and see what happens.

Usually when I see this it is only problematic in the short term. Someone loses their sight picture on this target and starts shooting in front of it for the rest of the day. It entirely possible the off-eye is taking over and giving them a false sight picture. In their minds

The longer you swing the more likely you are to slow down. This isn’t such a problem on a target that’s going away from you.

When it’s going away the further it gets from you the less angle it presents as it transitions into a quartering target. Slowing down is then offset by the decreasing angle to the target. Moving the hold point closer to you is always a good idea on short window and long crossing targets.

Magazine Review CLAYTARGET NATION – December 2018 Without a doubt, selection of a breakpoint is the most important element of pre-shot planning in sporting clays. From there you decide on a focal and hold point. If the breakpoint proves correct, stick with it for the remaining pairs on the Station. Clayton M. Rue believes one of the most common causes of misses is breaking with the original pre-shot setup and changing the breakpoint. Change the breakpoint if the first pair doesn’t work, otherwise repeat each pair as if it was the first.

Don’t try to break the target at its transition point is another rule Mr. Rue consistently preaches. He’s is right. With changes in direction and speed, the target is more difficult to judge. Either break it before transition or after. ____________________________________

Skeet doubles are no different than trap doubles. Break the first target in the same spot on a station every time and guess what? The second target will be waiting in the same spot every time. There will be some variation, but the second target will be in the same general area each time. While Paul Giambrone III doesn’t mention this, it is truly the most important rule in trap and skeet doubles.

Paul lays out the basics, break the first target two-thirds of the way to the stake, then shift your eyes and gun toward the stake or where the target setting hoop would be to pick up the second target. When you pick up the flash of the target, hard focus on it, swing and shoot.

These are the basics you will see in any stock doubles advice column.

Paul does add some good rules to follow if you really want to shoot doubles properly.

Don’t time the first shot where you shoot it at a set spot then come back to a set spot for the second target. This will work on a perfect day, but how many of those have you seen? Learn how to shoot them properly is Paul’s advice.

Shooting a delayed pair is a good practice device for the beginning doubles shooter. Have your puller hit the first target then throw the second target on a delay instead of throwing a true pair. This slight delay allows you to work into perfecting your second target transi-

tion. Another practice idea is to shoot the first target then follow-through to the center stake/hoop area and stop your swing. Again, this works on making you aware and ready to hit the transition point correctly.

John Shima and Todd Bender have been coaching partners since their days at Trinity College in Texas. I know they emphasize a powerful Preshot routine, but I don’t know much about their swing coaching styles. I can say their approach to the mental game couldn’t be more different. John takes the deep route and sticks with the philosophical approach while Todd is a Lanny Bassham adherent, which means he takes the psychological approach. For some people country music speaks to them, for others it’s classical, for me it’s the artist no matter the genre.

John’s philosophical approach centers around the “Shooting Self ”. This is a process approach.

Concentrate on the process of shooting and the mental game will take care of itself. Let the world revolve around the target and all else will take

care of itself. Getting to that level of mental freedom is the key. Allow yourself to have unconditional trust in your unconscious’ ability to break the target. Eliminate your emotional attachment to the outcome and watch the target break.

John does delve into the psychological aspects of the game and this month he talks about the “Imposter Syndrome”. This is a feeling some people get where the don’t feel they belong among the top shooters even when they qualify for a shoot-off. John suggest five ways to lift yourself out of this syndrome. First, acknowledge your strengths and view competition as a way of displaying them not as a way of overcoming your weaknesses. Second, detach yourself emotionally from the outcome and concentrate on the process. Third, enjoy the moment and accept that you deserve to be in a shoot-off. Fourth, act like you belong. Stand up straight and fake it till you make it. Finally, going back to the process, concentrate and focus on shooting and forget the rest.

Magazine Review

Self-image goes two ways, internally and externally. You must think positively and show a positive image to the world. Fake it till you make it works in both the philosophical and psychological approaches to the mental game.

Focus on your successes and learn from your mistakes. Nurture a positive self-image and confidence will follow.

Todd Bender places a great deal of emphasis on staying on the bright side of life and keeping a positive attitude. He goes off a little this month on people with pessimistic attitudes and I can understand why he doesn’t want these people around when he is shooting. Todd wants to focus on the positives, what you need to do better, what you did right, and what you are going to do about what you did wrong. Look to solutions not complaints or excuses.

Pictured above is the newest member of the Krieghoff International ProStaff, Reanna Frauens. As a member of Young Guns of Quail Creek, Reanna started the SCTP competitive year in April at the Southeastern Championships in Savannah, Georgia. At Forest City she broke a perfect 100x100 in Skeet and was High Lady H.O.A. Champion for the combined Skeet, Trap, and Sporting Clays.

In May she won the Florida State SCTP Trap Championship with the high score over all shooters.

She finished the year at the SCTP National Championships coming in second overall among the Ladies in Sporting Clays and leading all Ladies in Trap with a perfect 200x200! In the combined

championship for Trap, Skeet, and Sporting Clays she finished Runner-Up in the Nation among all Lady shooters!

She also won a shotgun in the Last Competitor Standing contest beating out over 550 competitors. What an incredible year!

I got a chance to shoot her new K-80 and was impressed with how wonderful it felt. No recoil and no muzzle jump, a great feeling shotgun. I‘ve had the good fortune to watch as she has grown as a shooter and a person over the past two years. With her new K-80 and support from Krieghoff International and the Young Guns she is sure to have another phenomenal year.

All scorecards must be turned in by 1:00 p.m. in order to be posted.

Entry Fee: $50 N.S.C.A., $50 Hunter, $35.00 SubJunior, Junior No Scorers or Trappers will be provided.

Shooters will be asked to squad themselves into groups of at least 4 and designate a field judge to verify scores for the squad.

Lunch will NOT be served.

COURSE RULES: All shooters and spectators are required to wear ear and eye protection on the course.
