Club News As you can see on the opposite page, the Palm Beach club is coming along. The exterior of the registration building for the rifle-pistol range is complete.

The note under the top picture is from Lynne Hawk who is heading up this project for the FWC. Let’s hope everything keeps moving forward.

The sporting clays tournament in March saw only 35 attend.

Luis Herrera led the field with a

lone 92. Ted Gray and Richard Azan were close behind at Runner-Up and Class A with 91’s.

Thirteen skeet shooters shot 2,200 targets at our last shoot.

Mario Quesnel and Saverio Riccobono let the 12 ga. with 49’s.

Robert Vazquez led the 20, 28, and HOA. Paul Billings led the .410 with a lone 45. Zeke Walker and Bruce Gordon led the Doubles with matching 40’s.

Nineteen shooters shot 2,550 targets at our March Trapshoot.

Dax Demena shot a near perfect 99 to lead the Singles event and won the Doubles with a lone 88. Joe Bilecki was Runner-Up in Singles with a 93 and won the Handicap with an 86.

Join me in congratulating Reanna Frauens for making the Junior and Junior Lady NSCASCTP All-American teams!

Reanna was fourth on the Junior team and first on the Junior Lady team!

The next building construction phase will include work on the ceiling, flooring, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and finalizing the plumbing. In addition, permits were secured to construct the trap and skeet fields and the 200- and 300-yard shooting lines and overhead baffling. A timeline for completing the rifle and handgun ranges will be available in May.

How you record it isn’t important, just that you do!

Another good idea is to designate a conscience, a person close to you to check in from time to time to activate your inner guilt.

Sean Hawley chimes in with Ian Darroch on some ideas for the offseason. Clean your gun and replace worn parts.

Reflect and review the past year. This is a good reason for a shooting logbook. You can find things you did consistently to achieve good scores and behaviors you don’t want to repeat when poor outings occurred.

Sean likes to do a lot of dry firing in front of the mirror in the off months. Not a bad idea even during the height of season. Finally, do your pre -season planning and set some goals. See Jacque’s article for ideas on goal setting.

TrapShootingUSA – March-April 2019 Jacque Snellenberger continues with her SMART goals article in this issue. She sets her sights on defining two things goals are dependent on: Lead Measures and Accountability. Be specific in your goals, wanting to be a better shooter isn’t enough. Jacque suggests we pick one discipline, singles perhaps, then set a specific goal and a deadline.

Magazine Review TRAP & FIELD – March 2019 Ian Darroch does not live in Florida, so his articles are sometimes out of sync with what we experience. Where December is the beginning of our season, March is the beginning of his. He has some advice for getting ready for the shooting season which still runs true even for us. Check over your equipment every year. Replace your old trigger springs and firing pins. Also any changes to your equipment should be made at this time not in the middle of the shooting season.

In the off-season Ian usually shoots 50 targets when he gets to the range, regardless of the weather. While your goal in practice is usually to improve, sometimes you are only doing maintenance, especially when you have three feet of snow on the ground. In Florida we create our own off-season. This is generally September through December for trap. For skeet and sporting it gets complicated since their nationals are in October. There means they have a summer lull to deal with.

Planning your season is much more complicated for us regardless of your discipline. In Illinois I would plan out each shooting year in January and February. Practicing would start in February and follow through April in leagues and on the practice field. The tournament season started in the middle of May with Missouri State and continued through to early October with the Fall Handicap in Kansas. Then we all hung up the tournament guns for dove, duck, and pheasant guns.

Regardless of where you live you need a down time and a plan on how to keep your skill level up.

We also need to recondition our equipment during this time. This means guns, glasses, and the other miscellany that allows you to shoot at your best.

Take time and plan out your year.

————————————————— This month Bob Palmer rehashes many of the basics that prepare you to compete in the zone.

Eat well and correctly, before you compete. Hydrate, but in Florida this also means stay out of the sun before you shoot. The sun can take the life right out of you and ruin an otherwise great day.

Stay conscious of this when you head out to the club.

Before you shoot, give yourself 30 minutes of alone time. This means get fully ready to shoot, head to a place near your trap, then relax and get your head right.

Try this! Give yourself 30 minutes of “me time” next time you shoot and see if your scores don’t improve.

Bob also steps into the Lanny Bassham arena with advice on posture and its affect on your self esteem and confidence. Assume an air of confidence and optimism, head up, not down. Dress so that you look like a winner not a slob. Play the part. Fake it till you make it. Your mind doesn’t know the difference from false bravado and the real thing. Convince yourself you can do it and maybe you will.

CLAYTARGET NATION – March 2019 One of the hot topics Frank Little harped on was automaticity. John Shima addresses the automaticity of implementing the three main elements of a shot: mechanical, visual, and mental.

The goal is to seamlessly tie these elements together as we call, see, move, and shoot a target.

Thinking about each of these shot components is something Frank continually cautions against.

John helps us simplify this process.

Our pre-planned move is a layered skill we consciously train into our game. Michael J. Keyes, M.D. and John both relate how we develop the mechanics for each move then use repetitive practice sessions to drill it into our subconscious. The goal is to be able to make our move automatically and flawlessly on cue. That cue is visual and activates the move.

John has a unique way of teaching skeet. If you commit to shooting the target 10 feet from the center stake, he wants the gun to go off at that point. Doesn’t matter whether you are on the target or not! Learn the move and rhythm of the shot first then adjust your speed, hold point, look point, and stance to make the break happen. The ideal break point is the goal, work backwards from that to condition the visual cue and move to watch the target break. With time and practice the target will break and you will have drilled everything into the subconscious. Automaticity!

————————————————— Picking a break point puts you in charge of the Station. Clayton M. Rue’s article this month advises us to dictate where you will break the target.

Visualizing it in your mind will boost your confidence when you call. He believes “breaking targets leads to trust, trust leads to confidence, confidence leads to breaking targets”. Take charge and call with confidence.

————————————————— Todd Bender does not like to change hold points strictly based on background. For Todd changing a hold point is reliant on the speed of the target.

Sometimes one field may seem to have faster or slower targets than another. If so, then adjust your hold point to accommodate the perceived difference in speeds.

Look points (eye placement) is subject to how you pick up the target. If you look three foot to the left of the gun for High 2, then always look three feet to the left on High 2. Don’t adjust your look point. Change the hold point, but not the distance from the gun to the look point.

Changing lens color can sometimes help you acquire targets more efficiently, more quickly. One color doesn’t do everything. Three colors are a minimum and those are usually a variant of red, brown, and yellow (or clear). Many people use purples and blues, but red, brown, and yellow are the starting points.

Your gun mount must have an automaticity to it (thank you John Shima). It must be automatic and consistent. Once this is established, your mount will have the desired consistency, shooting where you look. Adjusting the gun to the target and to its speed will now become an automatic response. I like their finishing statement: “learn the gun and how it moves”. Perfecting your mount is the critical part of that statement. Move, mount, and shoot has several variations and is different for each shooter. Learning how to visually lock onto a target, turning with your body and gun, bringing the gun to your face simultaneously with the target is the key to great shooting. All of it works together for a great shot. Practice Shima’s incomer drill. It will make you trust your move to the target.

You are supposed to miss when you practice. This is a hard principle to learn for many shooters. Gil and Vicki Ash remind us that failure is essential to the learning process and it is learned when we practice.

Bruce Lee once said you must practice a kick 10,000 times before you can rely on the automaticity of it. Gil and Vicki tell us, doing something 3,000 times turns it into a habit. Going back to Michael J. Keyes, M.D., you also need do this within a short timeframe. One hundred mounts a day at home in front of a mirror for 30 days in a row is probably a good start. Sean Hawley and about a hundred other instructors would agree.

Discipline in your life will help you develop discipline in your game. John Shima has some interesting ideas this month about improving our mental game. His first idea is straight out of the Bob Palmer and Lanny Bassham play book. Assume an air of relaxed confidence when you get to the club.

Fake it till you make it or just play the part.

Don’t let any negativity in, relax and let your shooter self out.

As I said earlier, you are supposed to miss in practice. The practice field is where you consciously diagnose problems, solve them, and “program appropriate pre-planned moves”. The goal is automaticity. Training is “purposeful, regular, and repetitious”.

Shades of Michael J. Keyes, M.D. and Gila and Vicki. It appears this is a much-8 discussed topic lately.

The practice field isn’t a place for judgement or reprimand. Maybe some football coaches should read that sentence.

John reminds us “forgive yourself, forget the mistakes, and move on”. Fix your problems on the practice field don’t judge yourself. It just wastes time! You are there to work, so do it.

John suggests several drills in this month’s article. I am not going to regurgitate them. The idea is to improve your swing technique and work on your ability to stay on task visually and mentally. I like John’s drills, especially the Incomer Drill as I previously stated. One of the nice consequences of drills is the change in concentration you experience, taking score out of the equation. The idea is to execute the drill perfectly, not produce a perfect score. In the process you would be amazed how often you move through the drill without a miss!

To quote John, “drills emphasize the need to concentrate and focus on just the next target”.

mantra spoken internally before each shot. The idea is to activate your concentration, narrowing it into one specific thought preparing you for the shot.

Mine is a reminder to activate my visual awareness, soft focus. It isn’t even verbal. It is a physical acknowledgement, activated by my gun mount, raising it a certain way, bringing it into my visual field. Your personal induction routine must be consistent and simple. The goal is a quiet mind and quiet eyes, both prepare you for the target’s appearance.

Only use your mantra once per shot.

Overuse decreases its effectiveness and sends it into the background noise of the round.

Add competitive pressure to these routines by shooting them with friends. If someone misses, start the routine over again. You can do this alone, of course, but adding the pressure of friends increases the intensity of drill.

Finally, John wants us to include a personal induction routine as part of our pre-shot routine. This is a very specific mental routine keyed by a personal

Magazine Review Ducks Unlimited – March/April 2019 Offseason is again a topic of discussion, but this time for duck hunters. I was fortunate enough to have known Jimmy Robinson, who wrote for Sports Afield magazine, one of the great shooting sports writers of the day from the 1930’s to the 1970’s. Phil Bourjaily is a better technical writer than Jimmy ever was, but he doesn’t have a tenth of Jimmy’s stories! How do you compete with stories about shooting and drinking with Gary Cooper and Clark Gable? Phil does a great job on the technical side and this issue he is spot on.

Phil suggests as Sean and Ian do, check our guns and clean them thoroughly. Check your POI and play with different chokes and loads to see if they pattern differently for your gun. Then Phil does some real soul searching and comes up with some great suggestions for his hunter friends. Shoot some practice!

This can come in the way of sporting clays, trap or skeet and take some lessons. He focuses on several good points about shooting. Learn to come from under the target. If you are under the target you can

see it, then of course you know where to go to it.

Too many shooters follow directly on the line-offlight of a target and end up over it. If you can see it, you can go to it!

Learn how to shoot is the crux of many of his suggestions. Trust your shooting and focus on the target. Good advice Phil! Take a lesson, it will cost you nothing in the end compared to not knowing what you are doing!

Shotgun Sports – March 2019 Should you hold a high or low gun in trap. By high gun we mean holding over the edge of the traphouse. Low gun means the bead is at the front edge of the traphouse or below it. The obvious advantage of holding a high gun is the reduction in vertical barrel movement. The problem is seeing the target as it rises from the house.

You are almost required to be a two-eyed shooter to hold a high gun. Frank Little details the problems of high gun hold points for one-eyed shooters in his book. The barrel will block the target a significant amount of the time. For this reason, one-eyed shooters are advised to hold on the edge of the house.

Mark H. Taylor provides a comprehensive list of ailments that follow the high gun regimen. I think his biggest concern is the lack of followthrough when quartering or straight-away targets are approached. He seems to think no followthrough on these targets can become a habit and on windy days this could cause you to shortshoot them. Low gun requires you to followthrough on each shot and is obviously his preferred method. His only negative comment for low gun is the required vertical movement on each shot and some horizontal movement.

Mr. Taylor is an international trap shooter. His natural bias is towards holding on the edge of the house. Richard Marshall, Nora Ross, and Rudy Etchen are renowned low gun shooters.

A majority of the top shooters over the years have advocated a high hold point. This is a personal choice dictated by your ability to see a target leave the traphouse and your ability to react to it. Only experimentation by the individual will prove what is best. Don’t listen to only one source of information. Play with everything then settle on something that “feels” the best.

————————————————— Layered skills, acquired through repeated, directed practice sessions are how we improve.

Michael J. Keyes, M.D. reminds us of this and sends us his second installment on practice and skill building this month. Repetition needs to occur over time. Remember cramming for an exam? Study every night and you wake up years later knowing the subject. Cram and it’s gone after the first 25 cent beer and hotdog Friday night after the test. If you want to learn a specific target in any discipline you need to practice how to break it over several sessions.

Want to learn how to break High 3 in skeet two thirds of the way to the stake? Learn how to conquer it at the stake first. Build that skill then reel it back until you get the results you want.

Having troubles with right angles on Post 5 in trap, start with the angle on Post 4, then walk your way over to Post 5. Eventually, you can

start walking into the grass to the right of Post 5 and break it there. You can’t do this in one session.

Skills are layered over time. Keep the session intervals as tightly linked as possible. Every Saturday isn’t going to work. Shoot on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. Better yet add Saturday to the mix. If you do this over a month’s time, you will achieve the results you want.

Don’t go in blind, get qualified help setting up the practice. If you don’t, you may be practicing the mistake to perfection!

Michael ends on an interesting note. Practice basics on a regular basis, especially as a warm-up for a competition.

There’s a great deal to be said about going to the roots of your shooting and practicing targets you would otherwise ignore. John Shima’s incomer drill is one of my favorites. Shoot only incomers from 1-7. Shoot three or four of them on each Station. I call for them with my gun down. The emphasis is on tracking the target in, slow mounting, turning with your body, and following through as each target breaks. Smooth clean mount and full body swing are the keys. Gebben Miles likes to shoot the beginner course – Red Course at Quail or Whitetail at South Florida - before a big competition.

He’s working on basics, a smooth mount and swing to the target with a nice follow-through. Try it sometime and tell me if it doesn’t make you feel better about your shooting.

Michael finishes on three principles: keep it simple, goal oriented, and warm-up by working on the basics. Start practicing and layering your skills from the basics to the highly technical. both prepared for the target’s appearance! Only use your mantra once per shot. Overuse decreases its effectiveness and sends it into the background noise of the round.

Youth Program

The Youth Program is busy as usual. Lots of shooters showing up to practice for the SCTP regional and state shoots coming up this spring.

We have three fields open and active on most nights now. Any given Monday you see Trap, Trap Doubles, and Skeet being shot.
