Club News more of him here in the Florida sun.

The turnout for the sporting clays tournament was again less than expected.

Wayne South and Gary Gray lead the event with a pair of 90’s winning Champion and Runner-Up respectively. David Stewart and Armand Lavina followed closely with 89’s winning Masters and Class AA. Ten shooters attended the last Skeet shoot with most of them shooting the whole 200 bird program. Two thousand targets were thrown with Robert Vazquez winning the 12, 28, and HOA. Joe Bianculli led the 20 and Doubles event with lone high scores. Paul Billings took the .410 event with a respectable 46x50.

Seventeen shooters shot just under 3,200 targets at the last Trapshoot.

Jacob Pappas and Dax Demena led the Singles with 96’s. Ken Boyce posted a 94 and Rich Conway followed with a 93.

Jacob came back in the Handicap to lead with a lone 89. Alex Riera and Joe Bilecki followed with 85 and 84.

Finally, Doubles was led by Dax Demena with a lone 89. Jacob took Runner-Up with an 87.

It was good to see our friends Jake (Jacob Pappas) and Rich Conway here in Florida. I met Jake at the Grand one year. We were staying at the same motel. He is a great guy and truly good company. Hope to see

Rich has turned into a good friend I met through a mutual acquaintance.

Rich globe trots between Europe and South Florida throughout the year. It is always good to see him.

Nothing new on the Palm Beach Gun Club. I assume they are finishing the interior of the rifle and pistol registration building. According to the last communication, all of the permits for the clay shooting areas have been obtained and they should be breaking ground soon.

Congratulations again goes out to Reanna Frauens for shooting “lights out” at the SCTP Regional shoot in Savannah. She posted the high score among all shooters in the sporting clays and posted the only perfect score in the skeet event! These great scores helped her secure the HOA Runner-Up spot for the combined, Sporting, Skeet, and Trap events!

She won the Ladies HOA by 6 targets.

We wish her good shooting in the upcoming Florida State SCTP Championships in May! May seems to be rushing to get the rainy season started. Let’s hope the rain holds off until after 4:00 each day.

Magazine Review TRAP & FIELD – April 2019 Bob Palmer believes shooters should have some adrenaline flowing through when they step to the line. As I recall, my best shooting was done with no adrenaline at all. Bob describes the overly calm shooter as one who needs only the slightest change in momentum to knock them into an out of control state. Maybe I was using adrenaline, but it wasn’t in the manner he portrays. For me it had to do with staying in the moment and on purpose. This takes some adrenaline, I suppose, just certainly not the amount he wants flowing through your body.

Bob suggests using a visualization exercise

at home. Practice visualizing your best shooting experience then pretend you are going to the line to shoot by stepping on a mat on the floor. Go through your pre-shot routine, maybe you should practice your mount at the same time. Step up to the mat bringing that adrenaline filled feeling out every time you do it. He also suggests doing this at your club, dry-firing with your gun in your hands. Not a believer that adrenaline and guns mix but see if it helps you.

Ian Darroch presents some ideas on the mental game this month. Control your anger, don’t count targets, and don’t put any pressure on yourself. Stay in the process.

Ian likes a mental phrase to key his concentration before every shot. Keep it positive rather than negative. Finally, no matter how bad you are doing, stay with your process. __________________________________ TrapShootingUSA – May-June 2019 The Silver Dollar Open is written up in this issue by Larry Grenevicki. A nice story and check out Dax Demena, Paula Keim, and Ruthie Flayerman’s pictures. All were winners at the shoot. Congrats!

There is an interesting article in this issue on the new VIMA glasses being used as a tool in the shooting sports. The skinny on this is a stroboscopic effect where the eyes are alternated between normal and obscured vision at a predetermined rate. The theory and design is supposed to reduce timing errors when shooting at a moving target.

That’s as far as I’m going on this. For more detail get a full copy of the article. It does 5 sound interesting.

ger based on a timeframe after you call for the target. Pull, one, two, three, bang, is shooting to a cadence. Shooting this way instead of a bird/ barrel relationship is never a good idea. Some people aren’t even aware they shoot like this and sadly it’s more common than most people realize.

The correct response is call for the target, see the flash, lock your eyes on it, then swing to it.

Mark is correct, train and practice in bad conditions to prepare yourself for the variability of face or tail winds. Train in advance for targets that may be jumping or dropping. Mark also wants us to take advantage of those days when everything is clicking. If you are shooting lights out, keep shooting. Whatever you are doing right, let yourself keep doing it. When you are having a bad day, stop shooting. Don’t drill in bad habits. Go home, but when you are shooting well, keep on shooting.

Shotgun Sports – May 2019 Florida is not known for its clayshooting, friendly weather. We are constantly plagued by breezes coming in from the north in winter, the south in spring, and the west in summer and fall. This is tempered by the incessant east wind coming off the ocean on the east coast or west wind on our other coast. No matter where you live in Florida you are affected by wind regardless of the time of year.

Mark H. Taylor believes we should embrace these conditions and train for them. He doesn’t provide any ideas how to deal with targets Affected by wind, but that’s not the point of the article. The idea is to expose yourself to variable conditions, so you don’t panic when confronted by them. He does however caution against learning to shoot to a cadence where you pull the trig-

To sum up, train and practice in bad weather so you are prepared for it. Being prepared for it will give you the confidence and experience to succeed if conditions aren’t the best. Also remember, continue to train and practice when shooting well, drilling in whatever is working. Stop when it just isn’t your day.

——————————————————— Cross-firing is when your non-dominant (your off-eye) takes over from your dominant (shooting) eye. When this happens, your perceived lead is wrong, leading to the inevitable miss. John Bulger suggests several common fixes for this. After years of shooting, John developed problems when his off-eye took over at times. At first he patched the off-eye then, when that stopped working, he bought a cross-fire eliminator front sight. You know, the fluorescent sights that can only be seen by your shooting eye.

Each worked for a time, but both eventually failed him.

He hit on his final solution, taking some advice from the sporting clays world. Get your eyes away from the barrel. For many that means calling for the target with your face off the gun, locating the target first, after the call, then mounting into the shot. John realized in skeet this could also be accomplished by changing his look point to one a little higher than where he had previously been looking.

He changed his soft focus to a higher point at the same relative distance away from the gun.

Same soft-focal point, just higher than before.

A slight lowering of the hold point is in order, but less drastic than the look point change.

Thanks, John. I tried this and can say on some stations it is definitely a boon to your shooting.

Build your solutions into your pre-match and pre-shot routine. Be ready to shoot when it’s time, leaving your reservations behind you.

This is what a good pre-match and pre-shot routine should do for you. You should be ready to shoot as soon as you step to the line.

Done right, all doubts are set aside before you ever step to the line.

“Build the skill, automate it and then focus on the results, not the internal process.” I like this quote, but I would make two small changes to Michael J. Keyes, M.D., original idea. Substitute process for results, and thoughts for process. “Build the skill, automate it, and then focus on the process, not the internal

If you have problems with “match anxiety”, the shooting equivalent of stage fright, take ownership of it and record its occurrence.

Keep a log of when it starts and what you are feeling as it happens. Write it down as it happens, don’t hope to remember it and promise to write it down later. Record it! Grade it. Is it severe or minor? How did it affect you?

Get it all down.

What are good pre-match routines? Relaxation techniques or rituals, visualization, and self-talk. Not high on the self-talk routines, myself. Internal dialogue can go horribly wrong at the wrong moment as far as I am concerned. Stick with relaxation and visualization.

Stop worrying about the result and just shoot.

Magazine Review ClayShootingUSA – March-April 2019 Derek Moore interviewed some of the top sporting clays shooters, getting their ideas on how to break a perfect score. Compiling what he found, Derek came up with what sets these shooters apart. Hard focus on the target and letting the subconscious do its thing seems to be the consensus. This means keeping the conscious mind occupied with one idea, seeing the target, then let the subconscious shoot the target.

—————————————————— Don Currie gives us his second installment on shotgunning fundamentals this month.

The topic is the physical preparation done to create the perfect Ready position. The Ready position starts with a relaxed stance, zero tension. We set ourselves in a stance allowing us to also finish at the break point without tension. Our hold point is then dependent on allowing time to properly follow and mount the gun to achieve the break point. Barrel orientation at the hold point is important. It needs to be at a vertical angle in good relation to the target’s elevation. Keep the muzzles below the line-of-flight!

Draw length is how far the gun must travel to reach your shoulder. Most will tell you the longer you have to wait for the target the longer the draw length and Don agrees. I like how Don suggests pre-mounting for trap style targets. Visual pickup point is important for close or fast targets and should be set so you can merge the gun and target properly.

Nothing should feel rushed. You should be in control and feel you are. Some targets will always need quick reaction, but most targets

should require the same speed of mount.

Keep you head still during the mount. Quiet eyes, quiet head. No sudden rush to mount causing your head to come to the gun. Bring the gun to your face not the other way around.

Keep the barrel just below the target line as the gun comes up. Let the front hand lead on the mount to prevent see-sawing of the barrels. A good mini-chapter on the Ready position.

DUCKS UNLIMITED – March-April 2019 During the off-season many hunters hang up their waders and pick up their fishing rods or golf clubs and don’t prepare for the next hunting season until October or November.

This is too late and Phil Bourjaily lays some ideas on us to stay ready for next year’s season.

Now is a good time to clean your gun, especially your choke tube. Take it out, clean it, grease it up, and put it back. Moisture will destroy a choke-tubed barrel and moisture is part of duckhunting. Last time I went out I had to use my gun as a guide pole to get myself out of a muck hole. Hate those things!

Pattern your gun and shoot patterns with several different shells and different choke tubes.

You’d be surprised how much variation shells and chokes have. Read the article by Tom Foster in SHOOTING SPORTSMAN. Changing your buttpad, if it’s old or adding

one can change your shooting experience to a more pleasurable one.

Lots of old A-5’s out there with metal or plastic buttplates would be more fun with a Kick-eez pad.

Phil has tons of ideas for hunters when they get to the range. Learn to keep the target in view and stay under your target. Trust don’t measure. Get rid of your bead or get one you can see clearly. Take a shooting lesson.

Learn how to focus, look right at the front of the target. This is DUCKS UNLIMITED, so look at the duck’s bill. Phil tells us to watch our pieces as they fall after we shoot. I have a better idea, shoot them. Shooting pieces teaches you a lot about gun handling.

Have someone film you shooting. Believe me, this tells you a great deal about what you need to improve. Get in shape and get your eyes tested are two more housekeeping items we should all do to improve our chances. Finally, hunt doves if your main interest is duck hunting. If you can hit a dove, you can hit a duck. If you can’t you’d better re-read his article and follow some of his suggestions.

Magazine Review Shotgun Sports – April 2019 Maggie Kelch’s interview with David Radulovich is an excellent source of training information. David would pick three stations on a course and shoot hundreds of rounds just on those three stations. He would work on fundamentals, like move and mount, insertion points, eye work, and his connection to the target. David believes working on fundamentals is best done shooting lots of singles. Repetition and working on the perfect move for each target. Quality practice at the expense of quantity.

There’s also some great strategy advice in the article.

Ask the trapper about the targets before you shoot.

Do your pre-shot planning. Watch the target line and know it so well you can close your eyes and see it. Where do you best see the target? Know as much as you can about the target and plan accordingly.

David is a big advocate of using a skeet field to practice. You don’t have to stand on the 8 skeet stations.

You can step back and shoot them from the 30 yard line of the trap field or step into the grass. Change it up. Shoot 5-10 targets in a row. He also used to do a “Go Home Round” before he would start his practice.

He would shoot a regular round of skeet and if he missed he would have to go home. Pretty serious stuff!

Part three of Michael J. Keyes,

M.D.’s dissertation on practice is presented this month. This time he advises us on how to get ready for competition. Much of this article has to do with avoiding the trap of negative thinking and stray negative thoughts. Visualization, relaxation, and selftalk can overcome these conscious thought interruptions. Truthfully, he gives you no great advice here, but I can. Concentrate on seeing the target leave the house or on seeing it enter your field of vision. Hard focus on it to the exclusion of all else.

Forget the rest. Giving your conscious mind this one task will help eliminate all the negativity an idle mind can conjure up.

CLAYTARGET NATION – April 2019

Speaking of hard focus, Paul Giambrone III has hard focus on the menu this month. Paul wants us to focus so hard on the target we see the rings. Really, if you just try to see the front edge of the target rather than the whole target you’ve succeeded in hard focus. Also, don’t look for the hard focus until the gun, the target, and your body are all moving together. If you are having trouble focusing on the target, try a different lens color. Finally, stay hydrated and keep your sugar level up.

——————————————————— Gil and Vicki Ash want to help us past our plateau this month. First off, they only know sustained-lead and push this swing method as if it is newest method to teach math. Aside from that, they rightly suggest the same thing David Radulovich does, shoot heavy repetitions of single crossing targets. As to crossing targets, learning how to accept separation of the gun from the target is a valuable skill. Doesn’t matter whether you are shooting pull-ahead, swingthrough, or sustained-lead, on strong crossers you are going to see separation between the gun and target. Get on that skeet field and practice!

Gil and Vicki go on to give us a second article, this time on practice, espousing repetition as the avenue to success. As I stated earlier, they agree with Dave Radulovich, you need heavy repetition on targets to drill it into your memory circuits. One other thing, they believe to really cement this into your long-term memory you need visualize and plan out this shot mentally to really stick it in your memory.

————————————————— Clayton M. Rue’s confidence in what he espouses is absolute. He believes all crossdominant shooters should shoot from their dominant eye shoulder, they should shoot with two eyes, and corrective measures should be applied at the least intrusive level possible. He does not consider any other possibility except shooting from the dominant shoulder. If your non-dominant eye interferes at times, he suggests winking it just as hard focus is obtained. He is okay with a small piece of tape to block interference.

————————————————— If your unconscious and conscious minds work together correctly, you find your Shooting Self. This is, of course, John Shima we are talking about. The Ego is the greatest barrier to great shooting. John is correct when he prescribes limiting the conscious mind’s activity to “just watching the target”.

Let the Ego mind concentrate on seeing the target and it has no where else to go to stir up trouble. With a preoccupied Ego your shooting reflex is free to act without interruption.

John gives us a four step “Shooting Identity Protection Plan”. Planning is the programming of the pre-planned move to the target.

Discipline is needed to implement the pre-

shot routine on every shot despite the monotony of one target after another. Effort must be applied to make watching the target break more important than breaking the target. A fine line of distinction, but speaks volumes if you understand the last idea, Trust. Trust your pre-planned move. Trust it and the Ego Self will not raise its ugly head.

John finishes with some advice about setting realistic goals, ones you can achieve given your skill level.

Break your goals into small digestible steps of progress so you can revel in their achievement.

Youth Program

April finished on a high note, on the 29th we had 21 kids shooting! Eleven were on the beginner field (three were new), and 10 on the intermediate/advanced field. Things usually pick up this time of year as the school year-end nears and many of the schools sports seasons come to a close.

May is a big month for many of our Youth shooters. The SCTP state shoot is the first weekend of May and we would like them all the best of luck!
