Club News I don’t want to jinx us, but so far so good. A normal rainy season and no ominous hurricane threats.

Crowds have dropped somewhat for some of our shoots which is normal for this late in the season.

Our skeet shoot attracted 6 shooters who shot 900 targets.

For the first time in a long time we had a different leader in each gauge. Michael Raley led the 12 ga., Paul Manilou led 20 ga., Hector Marrero led the .410 and Robert Vazquez led the 28 ga. with a perfect 50 and also took the HOA. Good shooting guys.

The Trapshoot was very well attended by 24 shooters who shot 4,600 targets. Angel Estevez led the Singles with a lone 97 followed closely by Dax Demena and Gabriel De La Campa with 96’s. Angel also went on to led the Doubles event with a lone 85. The Handicap was won by Alex

Riera with an outstanding score of 96! Dax Demena had a good showing with a 91.

A nice turnout of 44 shooters entered the Sporting Clays shoot in August. Wayne South took the event with a 90 over Alex Riera with the same score.

Lucio Gomez and Rodrigo Mehich followed closely behind with 89 and 88 respectively.

You may have noticed we have a new sponsor: The Gun Collection. Al Jasaitis contacted me recently to advertise his gun shop in the newsletter. He has quite an inventory of side by sides if you are interested.

Just to make sure you remember, we do not have a Sporting Clays shoot in September. We start up again in October. Hope the to see you soon.

Magazine Review ClayShootingUSA – July-August 2018 The Battue is a specialty target used to fool shooters in what always turns out to be the wrong situation.

Pat Lieske uses Maintained Lead if the Battue is thrown as a crossing target. On quartering Battues he prefers inserting on the front edge of the target and pulling away. In his opinion you can go offline too easily using Maintained Lead on quartering Battues. Pat also cautions that battues inside 35 yards require plenty of lead. After they turn gravity takes swift effect and their shape helps them cut through the air faster than a normal target.

Battues roll over as they lose steam.

Just after they turn when they give you a full face is the best break point for these targets. The Battue rises a little after it rolls over, it doesn’t immediately start falling. Include this in your shot planning. Battues are the most adversely affected targets in windy conditions. If they are moving around unpredictably on a windy day insert just behind the target and swing through it.

Magazine Review Shotgun Sports – 2018 September What is your motivation to improve or compete? Michael J. Keyes, M.D. asks the question and explains how challenge, purpose, and relationships come into play when we consider it.

Motivation has two parts, the desire to improve and the drive. Desire to change lives in all of us, it’s the drive that sets us apart. The desire to reach our goals is driven by the imag-

ined or real rewards we hope to receive.

The real question is how to you activate and maintain the drive to reach your goals? How do we sustain our drive and motivation? The depth of the challenge and its purpose are important factors along with the how this will change our relationships as we move to and finally achieve our goals. What motivates you and what will keep you on your path are questions you have to ask yourself.

What’s the plan and how do you stay the course to make it happen?

These are questions I can’t answer for you. You have to do that yourself. What do you need to do to convince yourself this is what you want? Figure that out then do it!

Trap & Field – August 2018 Ian Darroch is the newest addition to the Trap & Field writers vying to replace Frank Hoppe. “Tips for shooting handicap” is the topic of his first article. His five suggestions are basic, yet failing to pay heed to any of them will put you behind your competition. Know your POI. Many shooters never pattern their gun and shoot with the assumption they know where their gun shoots. If you aren’t smoking targets consistently you either are shooting under a false assumption regarding your POI or you have more issues than POI. Pattern your gun and shoot it based on what you learn from the patterning.

Quiet eyes, quiet gun. Don’t move your gun until you see the target. Simple but deadly true advice. Use better shells at handicap. If you are on the 24 yard line and hope to move to the 27, Remington Gun Club shells aren’t going to be a good choice. Shoot STS, AA, or Federal Handicap ammunition. The difference is obvious. Use Full or Improved Mod. Forget anything else. Finally, shoot with confidence. Handicap isn’t that much harder and truth is, you move the gun less to break the target.

Bob Palmer gives some advice on dealing with the personal life distractions we bring with us to a competition. Most of his suggestions were rather mundane, but one resonated with some things several students and friends have related to me recently.

Competitive shooting and deliberate practice are things we should do with other serious competitors or in the case of deliberate practice we should do it alone or only with a coach.

Shooting with your friends and family is fun but won’t necessarily lead to your best score. Pick your squadmates wisely. This may lead to some awkward moments at first, since some friends may think you are shutting them out of your life. Explain to them you want to get serious and their behavior during competitive shooting isn’t conducive to what you are trying to accomplish. Unfortunately, it’s a decision you must make and enforce if you want to shoot your best.

Avoid the recovery shot. Paul Giambronne III reminds us to be fully prepared for each shot before we call for the target. If you aren’t set up and prepared you may end up in recovery mode and this is what we want to avoid. This applies to skeet, trap, and sporting clays. If you don’t prepare and set up for each call of the target and follow your plan you will end up shooting a recovery shot.

Follow your pre-shot planning and pre-shot routine before every shot.

Get off to a good start and you won’t need a recovery shot. ______________________

your pre-shot planning and routine according to Don Currie. He suggests a virtual out of body visualization where you feel the shot occur.

Do this twice as part of your preshot planning then once you step into the box you do it two times before each pair. Pre-shot planning is especially important on pairs where the pickup point on the second shot is critical.

“Always look on the bright side of life” is one of the great songs we take away from the Monty Python movie The Life of Brian. Clayton M. Rue presents us the sporting clays version of this in his most recent missive. Let the missed targets go. Give them a quick evaluation so you don’t repeat the error then let them go. Dwelling on them after the fact never made the rest of the day better. Move on and break the rest!

Don also gives advice this month on eye shift from the hold point to the pickup point. Shift only your eyes to the pickup point with your head pointing at the hold point. When the gun moves your eyes and head should be aligned and moving together. One word of caution about looking back to your pickup point. Each of us has a distance that is optimal that we can look away from the gun. Look too far back and it is hard to pick up the gun when you start to move. Try this on a skeet field and you will understand what I mean.

Better scoring comes after the correction is learned.

___________________ Drift is the long-term development of a bad habit. You probably don’t even notice it until it’s turned into a full-blown problem. Clayton M. Rue talks at length about developing bad habits and how working with a qualified coach is the best way to remedy the problem. Correcting a well-ingrained bad habit isn’t easy. It’s going to hurt.

There will be a lot of misses during the process which will make the shooter reluctant to move off the bad habit. Nobody wants to miss more than they were, but you must accept lower scores for a while until the habit is broken and cor-

Magazine Review Claytarget Nation - August 2018 Improving seems to be the theme this month. Gil and Vicki Ash chime in with their take on it, citing Anders Erickson’s work on peak performance.

Erickson notes there are three myths when it comes to performing in a skilled task. First, people are not genetically predisposed to be better shooters than their peers. Yes, they may have better vision and faster reflexes, but targeted and deliberate practice is what makes a better shooter in the long run. You can have all the genetic, physical advantages in the world, but they mean nothing if you don’t first learn good technique and then apply deliberate practice to learning advanced skills.

Do something long enough and you will get better is the second myth.

How many shooters do you know that shoot two or three times the targets you shoot and they never seem to improve? The practice must have purpose and it must be repetitive before it will sink into long-term memory. The thing about this kind of practice, you need know what and why you are doing what you are doing. If you are just shooting target after target without any conscious plan or knowledge of why

you are doing it then you aren’t learning. In this regard Gil and Vicki suggest each shot must be visualized before it is taken. What they are getting at here is the conscious understanding of how and why each shot is going to happen. Not knowing exactly how you are going to break the target does nothing for the long-term retention of that shot in your mind. Know how and why you are shooting each target before you take the shot.

Trying harder doesn’t work and is the last myth. Becoming better takes true commitment. Read what Michael J. Keyes, M.D. has to say about motivation and drive. Commit yourself to getting better. To do this you must understand and apply deliberate practice. Of course, a good coach helps and in most cases is required if you want to leap that final hurtle.

You need ask yourself, can I break a target harder if I want to? If you don’t know what that means, let me explain. Just breaking a target isn’t enough. Turning it into a ball of smoke is the goal. If you can do that after just chipping the first pair of targets, then you really know how to shoot. This is why most of the best sporting clay shooters are shooting modified and improved modified chokes not Improved Cylinder. They want to know exactly where they are shooting so they can improve on each

SUNDAY OCTOBER 14TH Registration: Opens 8:30 a.m. and will close at 10:00 a.m.

All scorecards must be turned in by 1:00 p.m. in order to be posted.

Entry Fee: $60 N.S.C.A., $60 Hunter, $40.00 SubJunior, Junior No Scorers or Trappers will be provided.

Shooters will be asked to squad themselves into groups of at least 4 and designate a field judge to verify scores for the squad.

This is a Targets Only format with No Lunch served.

COURSE RULES: All shooters and spectators are required to wear ear and eye protection on the course.

Youth Program

School has started and Monday night crowds continue to be strong. Most sessions we have anywhere from 15 to 20 students. I would like to thank Traci and Joey Pinchin who have been assisting for the last month. Traci runs the office and Joey has been helping Steve with the Intermediate/ Advanced field.

Another graduate, Michael Pilch has also volunteered to help. We welcome him and would like to encourage all of our Youth shooters to help out at the club. We can give community service hours in return. Thanks for all the help!
