Club News I am sorry to report that our Sporting Clays Chairperson Gerard Stumm, Sr. passed suddenly during April. Gerry was an incredible gentleman and family man. I was always impressed with his family’s support of the program, helping him run our shoots with wonderful kindness, friendliness, and efficiency. His passing is not only a great loss to our club but a great loss to our community. Next month I will run a tribute to him. Please feel free to send me your thoughts and pictures of him.

The Sporting Clays tournament is cancelled for May. We are in the process of looking for a new Sporting Clays Chairperson to take over the tournaments.

Weather and Gerry’s passing meant both the Trapshooting and Sporting Clays tournaments were cancelled. The Skeet shoot was well attended by 13 shooters who shot 2,350 targets. Luke Ford won the 12 ga. event with a 49.

Robert Vazquez won the 20 ga.,

.410, and the HOA. Hector Marrero won the 28 ga. with a lone 49.

The Youth Program has been booming in April. Last week we had 27 Youth shooters. One of our shooters stormed through the SCTP Regional shoot in Savannah, Ga. Reanna Frauens ended the weekend Runner-Up Lady in Trap and Sporting Clays, RunnerUp HOA in the Skeet event with a 100 straight, and she ended the weekend HOA Lady in the combined events! Fantastic shooting for a second year shooter!

This weekend many of our shooters will be participating with the Quail Creek Young Guns team at the SCTP State Shoot. The club wishes them well in the event.

Magazine Review Shotgun Sports – May 2018 The Zone is a mental state where you obtain a heightened concentration and visual focus. Training yourself to reach the Zone is about eliminating distractions, honing your ability to stay on task, and focusing on the process of shooting. Research has highlighted eight traits characteristic to reaching the Zone according to Michael J. Keyes, M.D. The first is immediate feedback. This means you know what to do in a situation without engaging critical thinking. A good example of this is a turn-around jump shot in basketball. You turn, jump, and shoot. All done in fractions of a second without conscious thought.

The next trait is a lack of fear of failure. Eliminating emotion from your response allows you to act purely. Fear is an emotional response. John Shima speaks of the automatically executed preplanned move to the target. An unconscious move to the target where your only conscious involvement is your visual focus on the target. Any emotion, such as fear, will interfere with this pure move. The third trait involves your motivation for shooting. It must be in pursuit of personal satisfaction and nothing else. Again, this eliminates emotional involvement and conscious interference.

The fourth trait is total concentration, another trait where conscious involvement is absent. Time seems to slow during the fifth trait. Total concentration means outside distractions disappear and time references are eliminated causing the sensation of time standing still. Sixth is access to all your skill sets and rapid employment of the them as they are needed. Seventh is a feeling of effortlessness which comes from being totally in tune with yourself both physically and mentally. Finally, is a clarity of goals.

You see what you want to accomplish and you do only what is required to bring yourself to your goal.

Extraneous thoughts to the process are absent.

Just do it!

How do you train yourself to develop these traits?

Compete without expectations. Train to execute the process, the shooting process without conscious thought. If you have a problem target, practice it until the problem becomes a strength. If you can’t solve the problem, get outside help. You shoot to break the target, not to win. Learn to break each target perfectly and winning will take care of itself.

Magazine Review .ClayShootingUSA – March/April 2018 Pat Lieske presents his ideas this month on Trap style targets in Sporting Clays and FITASC. For straight-away of shallow angled trap targets he suggests spot shooting or intercepting the target with a pre-mounted gun. He advises holding directly on the line of flight. I don’t. In trap it is never advisable to hold directly over the target’s line of flight.

Hold slightly to the right for right-handed shooters or to the left for left-handed shooters. This allows a better view of the target and you can slide up to it without losing sight of it.

On flat trajectory targets, keep your hold point close to the break point. This prevents you from an over-move that will push the barrels over the target. As in trap, Pat recommends pushing your vision beyond the barrels to better see Trap style targets approach your barrels from underneath.

When targets start to your right or left he recommends swing-through as the way to approach these targets. Insert or mount on the back edge of the target and pull through it. This give you a better feel for the speed of the target as opposed to maintained-lead. This is especially true on targets with

little spring on the trap. Let the target pass your barrels and gently pull through the target.

Don’t get caught too far behind the target by holding to close to the trap. Pick a hold point where you can make an unhurried, controlled shot.

Watch you barrel height. Going over trap style targets is the most common mistake. Also, always remember to move in the direction of the target.

Many shooters miss trap style targets by moving vertically to shoot a horizontally moving target.

Trap style targets are also a time where Pat advises using the trigger hand to control the initial move to the mount. This prevents the gun from meeting your cheek too late.

Louise Terry’s article on Ashley Little and her switch from right-handed shooting to left is an excellent read for those who are cross dominant shooters. Ashley made the switch and her shooting has improved dramatically. It took over one year, but the results made it all worth it.

Training your mental game takes more than just shooting targets. Adam Blair has some suggestions this month to push your mental game forward. Instead of shooting the suggested 3 or 4 pairs on a station, try for 5 or 6. This is always a problem in sporting. Break the first two or three pairs then you fall off and miss on the last pair.

Train yourself to repeat pairs and you will pick up targets you usually lose. I personally advise shooting something like the Red Course at Quail Creek and seeing how many targets you can run. Pushing yourself to shoot 30, 40, or more targets straight will train you to handle running several stations in a row on a competition course.

CLAYTARGET NATION – April 2018

One great thing about this magazine is the way it embraces controversy between its writers. This month John Shima advises shooters to use a full body move when swinging to the target. Synchronizing your barrels with the target is wrong philosophically.

The synchronization should be between your upper body and head with the horizontal movement of the target.

John employs the word “decoupling” to separate your eyes from the barrels.

Visual focus on the barrels instead of the gun is one of the greatest mistakes shooters make. Initiating the preplanned move by using your whole body instead of your hands helps decouple your eyes from the barrels. Use your feet, ankles, and lower body to rotate your upper body with the target.

This permits the eyes to acquire the target then lock on it with hard focus.

The move to the target with your whole body “rather than pushing the gun” with your hands allows a true decoupling of your eyes from the barrels and onto the target where they belong.

The conscious mind has only one task when shooting, watching the target. Total visual focus on the target allows your pre-planned move, your subconscious move to react freely with the target. This is where the Zone comes into play. Reach a state where your total visual focus is on the target and you react naturally to the target. This is the feeling of effortlessness where the Zone makes shooting easy and much more enjoyable.

Here’s where it gets fun. Clayton M. Rue wrote an article last month advising us to let our hands move to the target. He’s not a big fan of a full body move. This month in the same theme he wants us to “let the target push the barrels”. This is entirely in opposition to John Shima’s philosophy. Clayton is a strong advocate of Maintained-lead shooting and believes you should never let the target get in front of the barrels. Thus, the target pushing the barrels idea. I always thought I was pulling the target across the field when using Maintained-lead. Not a big point, just a different feel between the target and the barrels.

Rabbits seem to be one of those presentations people either love or hate. Clayton M. Rue weighs in with some strategies to follow when confronted by them. Like many instructors he advises starting low and using the top half of your pattern to break the target. He likes a move-mount and shoot technique with swing-through.

As he always does, he suggests using only

your hands to move the gun, not your lower body. Use 7 ½ shot, rabbits are thick targets. Take them as soon as possible, when they have the most spin to aid in their destruction. Finally, always shoot the rabbit first in a true pair.

Fear, anxiety, and doubt erupt as emotional interferences at the worst moments when we shoot. Controlling their appearance and affect is a major part of your mental game. Deflecting or defeating the source of these intrusions is one of the strategies every shooter should add to his mental tool box. The confidence gap can be one of these sources. According to John Shima, this gap exists at the difference between our performance goal and our current skills. A reasonable goal keeps the gap small and manageable. An unreasonable goal, given a shooter’s skill set, widens the gap and opens them to mental perturbation. Keep the gap small by setting reasonable goals and by entering situations where you have the best odds of meeting your goals. If you shoot one event better than another, keep competing in your good event and continue working on the weak event before you choose to start registering targets.

achieve the long-term goals meaningful to you. Setting a goal is one thing but having the tenacity, mental toughness, and willpower to train for it is another. Grit is a combination of courage, diligence, endurance, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. It takes mental toughness and courage to overcome your fears and doubts. Fulfilling a commitment to a goal requires diligence and endurance.

A relentless, uncompromising approach to preparation, training, and winning is the final element. We’ve all known gritty competitors who seem to win regardless of the odds. Maybe we should emulate them.

When it comes to practice, John advices us to work on mastering our strengths and improving our weaknesses. This means spending 75% of your practice time reinforcing and maintaining your strengths and spending the other 25% working on just one weakness. This maximizes your contribution to your confidence account. Also, always start and finish a practice session with drills you perform with absolute confidence.

Keep that confidence gap small and pay into your confidence account at every opportunity.

SATURDAY JUNE 23RD Registration: Opens 8:30 a.m. and will close at 10:00 a.m.

All scorecards must be turned in by 1:00 p.m. in order to be posted.

Entry Fee: $60 N.S.C.A., $60 Hunter, $40.00 SubJunior, Junior No Scorers or Trappers will be provided.

Shooters will be asked to squad themselves into groups of at least 4 and designate a field judge to verify scores for the squad.

This is a Targets Only format with No Lunch served.

COURSE RULES: All shooters and spectators are required to wear ear and eye protection on the course.

Last Monday night we had 27 Youth shooters show up for our program! Some of our shooters who are part of the Young Guns at Quail Creek also showed up to practice for the SCTP State Shoot.

I would like to congratulate Reanna Frauens on her great shooting at the SCTP Regional shoot in Savannah, Ga. She broke a 100 in skeet coming in Runner-Up overall in that event. She was also Runner-Up Lady in Trap and Sporting Clays. All of this allowed her to finish HOA Lady for the shoot. What is really impressive is that she was trailing by seven targets for the HOA going into the Skeet event. Her 100 under pressure to take the HOA by one target is truly incredible! Congrats from all of us!
