Club News Weather affected everything in May. Our trapshoot was limited to five brave 16-Yard shooters.

Alex Riera led the continually, rain interrupted event with a lone 94.

The monthly skeet shoot was also attended by five shooters.

Saverio Riccobono and Bruce Gorden led the 12 ga event with 48’s. Paul Billings then took over and won all the remaining events, 20, 28, .410, Doubles and HOA. Great shooting Paul! See you in the Fall.

We are still looking for a Sporting Clays Chairperson. If you have interest in helping with the Sporting Clays program, let me

know.

Wednesday night game shooting has been well attended. Come out and shoot with Steve and the gang. Youth nights are also going well. I suspect we will get busy now that schools are getting out.

Not much else to say this month. I haven’t heard about the progress on the Palm Beach County facility. If I hear I will let everyone know.

Magazine Review TRAP & FIELD - MAY 2018 Training versus practicing has been a hot topic lately. Bob Palmer dives into the fray and explains the distinction between training and practice as skill maintenance versus skill development.

Shooting rounds of practice is skill maintenance. Here you are repeating what you’ve already learned, reinforcing what you know. At the same time this should highlight where your flaws lie. Some shooters never pick up on their flaws. This is where you need a good coach who can spot what you do right and where the flaws exist or where skills sets are missing or lacking.

Skill development is deliberate practice and where you expand your skill set.

Experimenting with new hold and look points or practicing one Post or target until you understand how to beat it. Bob has always emphasized skill development is a solo activity not a social one. It’s a personal thing where you are working on you and you alone. Anything or anyone who tries to distract you from that purpose is hurting your training. Train alone, practice with others.

Magazine Review Shotgun Sports – June 2018 Practice versus training is also the topic of Mark Taylor’s article this month. This is a two-part article with the first installment concentrating on a shooting definition of practice and a few suggestions for training. The second installment will provide insight into training for the shotgun sports. Practice as defined by Mr. Taylor is an attempt to prepare for competition, duplicating conditions expected on the day of competition.

If you like to start on Post 4 in trap or like to be the second shooter on a skeet squad then start on that Post or as the second shooter on your practice squads. If you are going to compete in a 100 -target event Mark suggests shooting 100 practice targets instead of 50 targets. Shoot with full squads when you practice and shoot at the same time of day as you would experience in a competition. To add a competitive spirit to the practice bet lunch with someone on your squad. Next month we will hear Mark’s suggestions for training in the shotgun sports. Look forward to it.

Pay special attention to how your toes are involved as you swing to the first target then transition to the second bird. I think the take-away from Johnny’s article is how we need to physically move on these targets. Involve your lower body in the move to that first and second target and your results will improve dramatically. This will also help your regular skeet game which will further improve your doubles scores. Full body move, try it!

______________________________________ Johnny Cantu, the editor of Shotgun Sports, has some ideas to improve your skeet doubles this month. Johnny wants us to pay special attention to how our toes are used to influence our moves to the target. We don’t notice it but a good move to the target in skeet doubles involves more than just swinging the gun with your upper torso. As so many others have suggested, we need to move to skeet doubles targets with a full body move.

Here’s where Johnny comes in. If you pay a modicum of attention to how your toes are involved in this move you will notice they play a big role in making that move happen.

Two approaches to the mental game include avoiding negative feelings or concentrating on the positive. This is Lanny Bassham’s area of expertise, avoid the negative and reinforce the positive.

Michael J. Keyes, M.D. has found some research reinforcing the emphasis on the positive.

He found evidence where looking at positive images before starting a stressful job made subjects more efficient and less stressed than the control group.

So, how does this help us when going into a competition? Find positive things that reduce your stress before going out to shoot. This may be listening to music or looking at pictures of your family or maybe puppies and kittens. Find your own way here. I can’t tell you what puts you in a relaxed state before you shoot. Many coaches advise getting to your first trap or station 30 minutes before you shoot as part of your preshoot routine. This allows time to relax, listen to your positive music, clear your head, and look at pictures of Labrador Retriever puppies. If it works for you do it.

chandelle target at its peak. The target line is steady at this point. Pick a break point and start just under the line-of-flight. Do not track a chandelle. The changing speed and direction aren’t something you can track well. Pat likes maintained-lead or pull-away for this target. Because of the constantly changing line, swingthrough isn’t recommended.

The crossing chandelle can be shot as it is dropping, at its peak, or on the rise. Quartering chandelles are best shot on the rise or at the apex.

The line is hard to read on a quartering chandelles once it starts to drop and it will accelerate away from you. Incoming chandelles usually present an easy shot on the drop. One final reminder, do not track chandelles.

Unlike most of the other shooting magazines, ClayShootingUSA gives us nostalgia articles that make great reading and remind us of our heritage. There is an interesting article on White Flyer’s 125th Anniversary from Larry Grenevicki this month. Ted Bacyk also gives us another installment on his history of shotshell manufacturing. Thanks guys for some good reading!

Magazine Review CLAYTARGET-NATION – May 2018 Misses for beginning shooters are predominantly due to mechanical errors and as they progress their misses are most frequently caused by visual miscues. This means visual discipline becomes more important to the established shooter as they progress. John Shima reminds us this month to pay heed to our visual discipline, so we can get optimal target acquisition. In this regard John explains the Quiet Eye philosophy for improving your visual acquisition of the target.

to the nose of the rabbit and immediately pull the trigger”. Your hold point should be below the rabbit’s line-of-flight and one or two feet behind where you see the target clearly. For close and slow rabbits he suggests sustained-lead. For quartering rabbits he suggests diminishing lead.

The Quiet Eye in sports means to expand your soft focus at your look-point. Soft-focus expands and activates our peripheral vision. Our peripheral vision is best at acquiring a moving target.

Strict discipline in entering good soft focus before each shot will decrease your lost targets. The Quiet Eye serves another function other than the expanded peripheral vision. It quiets your conscious mind, giving it something to concentrate on. This takes the interfering, conscious mind out of your shooting and allows the subconscious to act freely.

Insertion point is a rarely discussed and widely defined issue. Clayton M. Rue makes it easy for us and defines insertion point based on swing method. Maintained-lead, insert in front of the target, Pull-away, insert on the target, and with Swingthrough, insert behind the target. Inserting your barrel in the wrong spot for your swing method is a common mistake that shouldn’t happen. This is where visualization is an integral part of the preshot routine. Imagine the shot and where you are going to insert your barrels.

Don Currie throws out some good advice on rabbits this month. On crossing rabbits, let them beat your muzzle then “stab it with a fork”. “Let the target beat your muzzle by just a bit, then go 8

When I think of cross-training for shooting I think of golf or tennis. With both sports you keep your head down, you have a pre-shot routine, and you are trying to hit an object ball in a similar manner as a clay target. Bruce Shultz and Tim Le Cras say their article is about crosstraining for sporting clays when in fact it is a training article. Regardless they present some good training ideas. Like I said earlier articles on practice versus training are a hot topic.

At Markham you can move freely around most of the 5-stand targets, shooting them from different angles and distances. You can do the same thing on a skeet field, stepping to the right or left of the post and even further back. This is their first suggestion for your training. Breaking a target at different points in its line-of-flight is the second. Practice close targets with a tighter choke is their next one. Delay the release of the target is another suggestion which again works on a skeet field as well as on a 5-stand.

When the target appears, your body needs to move at the flash of the target. Harken back to Johnny Cantu’s article, pay attention to those toes. Rotating your body in sync with the target allows the gun and target to match speed. With matched speed and a smooth transition of your eyes from soft focus to hard visual lock on the target you are properly engaged with the target for a successful shot.

Practicing skeet or trap for sporting clays is the obvious cross-training situation. Practicing in different weather conditions prepares you to expect the unexpected and may save you a few targets when you really need them. Experience is the best teacher and unless you have experienced a cold, rainy, windy day how do you know what you need to beat the conditions?

Finally, when shooting pairs, turn report pairs into true pairs, and shoot true pairs in reverse order. Basic training suggestions you may not have thought of on your own.

SATURDAY JUNE 23RD Registration: Opens 8:30 a.m. and will close at 10:00 a.m.

All scorecards must be turned in by 1:00 p.m. in order to be posted.

Entry Fee: $60 N.S.C.A., $60 Hunter, $40.00 SubJunior, Junior No Scorers or Trappers will be provided.

Shooters will be asked to squad themselves into groups of at least 4 and designate a field judge to verify scores for the squad.

This is a Targets Only format with No Lunch served.

COURSE RULES: All shooters and spectators are required to wear ear and eye protection on the course.

MAXIMUM LOADS PERMITTED: 12GA, 3 DR EQ, 1 1/8 oz. Shot 7 1/2.

Another busy month for the Youth Program. We continue to have on average about 8 shooters on the beginner field and an equal amount on the intermediate and advanced field. As always I want to thank everyone involved with the program for working with our Youth shooters over the last 14 years.
