Club News Sorry this is so late but I had two problems this month. The first was losing cable and internet last weekend. The second is a puppy named Jack who has joined my family.

Getting away from him to spend time at my computer has been hard coordinate. That being said, here is the July newsletter.

Sporting clays saw 34 shooters compete.

Wayne South led all shooters by two with a lone 92. Steve Deutsch took Runner-Up with a 90.

Looking at the scores, most shooters were in the 80’s, Nice

shooting everyone!

Eight shooters shot 950 skeet targets at our last skeet shoot.

Robert Vazquez led the 12 ga with a lone 50 straight and was Runner-up in 20, 28, and .410. Geoffrey Peters led the 20, 28, and .410. Good shooting guys!

Marcos Vidal led all trapshooters in both the Singles and Handicap events at our last shoot. FTA Hall of Famer, Angel Estevez prevailed in the Doubles.

Not much else to report this month. Shoot early in the day and you will avoid most of the rain.

TRAP & FIELD – June 2018 Bob Palmer talks about the importance of the Zone versus adherence to technique this month.

Technique in trapshooting is rarely discussed. There are no set rules in trap. It is truly one of the most freestyle of the shotgun sports and it is our own fault. No one has ever written how we should break any given target. I assume most coaches teach what they do and believe it’s the only way to approach the target in this game. Personally, I coach shotgunning not trapshooting. My first discipline was hunting so I approach any of the clay target sports in that respect: get a clear view of the target, swing to it or insert the barrels where they need to be, see the sight picture, and pull the trigger. Works for whatever swing method you prefer.

Bob reminds us teaching technique is a three-step process. Step 1, break the process down into small component parts, explain why they are important, and get the student shooting. At this stage the student in thinking about what they are doing. This is also where a coach prevents any bad habits from forming. Step 2, speed up the process, less thinking is involved and the student is trying to implement a consistent routine. Step 3, the routine is established

and the shooter is shooting without thinking. Here is where the Zone can take over and the shooter can shoot more creatively, reacting to target changes.

This is the point of his article. We learn technique or routine then we let our subconscious do the shooting. If we give over control to our subconscious we naturally swing to the target on purpose and break it. When we let the conscious get involved all bets are off. We jerk the gun, stop our swing, and any number of other mistakes are made.

Learn good technique and let your subconscious shoot the target.

Magazine Review Shotgun Sports – July 2018 The “fight or flight” response to threat has been the subject of intense study by sports psychologists for decades. Recent findings determined these are in fact two separate and distinct states with each having their own physical and emotional affects. With the discovery that these are separate states, “Fight or flight” no longer properly describes the response so it has been relabeled the “challenge or threat” response. Researchers found the “threat” state is characterized by predominantly negative emotions and deleterious physiological changes. Obviously not the best state to be in if you are entering a competition. The “challenge” state on the other hand places us in a state of readiness with a mix of positive and negative emotions and a much more advantageous physical state. With that in mind, Michael J. Keyes, M.D. advises us to learn how to invoke the challenge state and avoid the threat state when we go into competition.

Doubt is always the athlete’s enemy and is probably the main factor in determining whether you enter a challenge or threat state. Eliminate doubt and you stand a good chance of avoiding the “threat” state. Confidence and polished skills are our best defense against doubt.

Deliberate practice is the way to build confidence and slay the emotional monster, doubt. Pick one or two of your problem presentations, posts, or stations and work on them until you feel confident you know how to beat them. Beat them

and your confidence will grow.

Build even more confidence by shooting “Red Course” targets like the ones at Quail Creek. I think it was Gebben Miles who said he always practices on “Red Course” type targets before a big tournament. These targets hone your fundamentals and can be used to challenge yourself to clean every station. Don’t leave a station until you’ve cleaned it, start the station over if you miss.

Only competition prepares you for competition.

Unless you are exposed to the challenge and threat states brought on by competition how are you going to prepare for them. Get enough competitive exposure and you eventually learn how to channel yourself straight into the challenge state. Visualization, task focus, and a process-oriented pre-shot routine are all be tools to be used against the threat state. Positive self-talk and relaxation practices also help. Pre-program yourself to think of a competition as a challenge rather than a threat.

Keep it positive not negative.

L.P. Brezny is the gold standard for field testing ammo and guns. This month he tested BACKRIDGE ITX non-toxic shotshells. Sounds like these are an excellent alternative to tungsten-based ammo. The shot is soft unlike traditional steel shot and has the Saturn-like ring around each pellet which makes them deadly on impact. Mr. Brezny found these cartridges very effective at up to 55 yards. He did not speak about any problems at close range, so this may be one of the few non-toxic cartridges that patterns well at all distances up to the 55 yards he acknowledged. ______________________________________

CLAYTARGET NATION – June 2018 Today’s shooting articles are dominated by the research of Anders Erickson and Joan Vickers. Dr. Vickers research is on the “Quiet Eye” effect in sports. Paul Giambrone, III reminds us this month on the importance of the “Quiet Eye” in skeet. I recently gave a lesson to a student on this exact principle. Set your eyes at your look point then mount the gun to your hold point. When done correctly your eyes do not look back at the barrel/bead.

They stay in soft focus at your look point and you are ready for the appearance of the target.

Mounting and checking your beads, then going into soft focus at your look point is less efficient. You tend to forget the look point and stay with the barrel/bead.

There’s no need to check your beads.

You’ve mounted the gun enough times to know if everything is correct. Also, too

many shooters never experiment with their look and hold points.

Do it.

Try new ones.

This is especially true if you tend to swing over targets. _________________________________ Draw length is the distance the gun travels to the shooter’s face from the ready position. The general rule, the longer you wait for a target to get in range, the larger the draw length. Close targets have short draw lengths, distant targets have longer draw lengths. Clayton M. Rue believes fast crossing targets require a long draw length.

This allows the shooter to build momentum and gun speed. Slow crossing targets means less draw length. It makes sense.

You can test this for yourself on a skeet field. Use Station 4 as your close, fast, crossing target, then use the low house on Station 3 or the high house on 6 as your slow, crossing target. I’ll try it and let you know.

Magazine Review John Shima’s article had a great deal to say about his shooting philosophy this month. The takeaway however didn’t come until the last three sections where he discussed Mechanical, Visual, and Mental discipline. John and Bob Palmer agree on Mechanical Discipline. Initial training in any sports should be in slow motion with the emphasis on perfecting the movements. In this regard John’s Incomer Drill is perfect for developing mechanical discipline. Incoming skeet targets are slower and allow a shooter to perfect their move. Remember, initial learning is done consciously. As moves are perfected, control moves from being done consciously to being performed subconsciously. The slower incoming skeet targets permits the shooter to consciously practice a whole-body swing/move to the target, swinging to it from the ankles up.

Within a short time less conscious control is needed and the subconscious eventually assumes control.

Visual discipline is about training your eye to “watch the target continuously until it breaks”.

Remember back to Paul Giambrone III’s article.

A solid pre-station and pre-shot routine sets the right environment for a well disciplined visual setup. Expand your vision into soft focus at your eye hold or look point and allow your peripheral vision to do its work. Finally, mental discipline is a two-phase process. The first is what you are thinking before you call for the target and the second is what you are thinking when you call for the target.

Discipline and consistency are the mark of an accomplished shooter. Spend the time to develop good mechanics. Never call for a target unless you are visually prepared for it. Consistently apply your pre-station and pre-shot routine. Develop the discipline to consistently follow your mechanical, visual, and mental programs and your scores are sure to improve.

Visualization of the shot is where your conscious mind should be before you call. The more detailed and specific the visualization the more effective it will be. As you call for the target your total concentration should be on acquiring the target.

Phil Bourjaily examines the three components of the barrel this month: Length, Rib, and Beads.

Barrel length is important for balance and how the shooter perceives the sighting plane. Berretta and Benelli automatics balance best with a 28” barrel. Most pumps have better balance with a 30” barrel. O/U’s can be well balanced at 28”, 30” or 32” depending on the brand. Balance is important to how the gun feels in your hands. The more experienced the shooter you become the more you want the right feel in your hands. Find a gun that feels good and hold on to it the rest of your life.

Length is also important for the

creation of a precise sight picture.

The longer the barrel the more precise your sight picture appears.

Find the right balance and a length that gives you the sight picture you want to see. Rather the sight picture you need to see.

Phil talks about losing sight of a dropping target behind the step of a raised rib. Honestly don’t know what he is talking about there. If a target is dropping you keep the target in sight regardless of whether your rib is elevated or flat on the barrel. You lose sight of the target and it’s your fault not the rib’s.

The bead is on the rib as a reference for elevation and little else. As a trapshooter, elevation is important on a target that is rising. Beyond that it should only be recognized in your peripheral vision. As far as the middle bead is concerned, they aren’t seen on hunting guns. I don’t know why he even mentions the middle bead. You certainly aren't even concerned with lining them up.

SATURDAY JULY 14TH Registration: Opens 8:30 a.m. and will close at 10:00 a.m.

All scorecards must be turned in by 1:00 p.m. in order to be posted.

Entry Fee: $60 N.S.C.A., $60 Hunter, $40.00 SubJunior, Junior No Scorers or Trappers will be provided.

Shooters will be asked to squad themselves into groups of at least 4 and designate a field judge to verify scores for the squad.

This is a Targets Only format with No Lunch served.

COURSE RULES: All shooters and spectators are required to wear ear and eye protection on the course.

MAXIMUM LOADS PERMITTED: 12GA, 3 DR EQ, 1 1/8 oz. Shot 7 1/2.

Youth Program

First off I want to wish all of our Youth Program shooters who are going to the SCTP Nationals, Shoot Well! We are so proud of you and how you have progressed in so short a time! We have had 5 national champions pass through and participate in our program.

Not to mention the team championships they have won. Let’s not forget, one of our shooters is on the U.S. Army Marksmanship Team, preparing for the 2020 Olympics. It doesn’t matter whether a youth shooter just wants to learn how to shoot or if they want to compete on a national championship level, Markham Skeet and Trap is here for them.
