Club News The Skeet shoot and the Sporting Clays shoot were cancelled this month. The Trap tournament was attended by 13 shooters. Dax Demena turned in a great 99 in Singles to lead all competitors. Oracio Riccobono was Runner-Up with a lone 93. Hunter Serfoss lead all competitors with a nice 94 in the Handicap and Ruthie Flayderman turned in a strong 88 in the Doubles event for the win! Nice shooting everyone!

As you can see we have a Charity Shoot for the BIG Children’s Foundation Sunday, November 5th.

This event has raised over $15,000 the last three years for this wonderful organization. Please try and attend. The food is excellent, the prizes are nice, and the raffle includes a gun, mountain bike, and 120 qt. cooler.

The Richard Merritt Classic will be held concurrently with the Charity Shoot. As always this is a great event in memory of Mr. Merritt.

The food is always wonderful and the awards are generous. We look forward to your attendance.

The Youth Program has been busy

with over 20 shooters attending on any given Monday. I would like to thank everyone for helping. Mary Norris and Staci Hole have been helping out running the office. If you see these wonderful ladies, thank them for their kind assistance!

I am looking forward to seeing my snowbird friends as they show up this fall and winter. Always a good time catching up with them and shooting some rounds at the club.

Tony Boyd is doing well with his shoulder surgery. Be sure to thank Gary Hooker and Tony for their hard work making our club better every day. These guys care and truly make a difference. Thank all these guys and ladies when you see them. Kat did a great job helping our during Tony’s convalescence. I want to thank her personally for making our Youth shooters and their families welcome. Thanks Kat and the rest of Markham’s staff!

Magazine Reviews ClayShootingUSA – Sept./Oct. 2017 Rabbits are the bane of a significant minority of shooters. Fast or slow, doesn’t matter, some people just hate them! In this issue Pat Lieske provides good advice on how to approach them. Ever notice how the jet you’re on seems to crawl along when you are at 35,000 feet then on approach to the airport it accelerates the lower you get? That’s because at 35,000 feet you have nothing as a reference to gauge the jet’s speed. As you come in to land, the ground provides reference points to gauge your speed and you realize how fast the jet is going. By the time you get that low your speed is less than half what it was at 35,000 feet!

to miss those pesky wabbits, Mr. Lieske believes you are probably lifting your head. Keep your eyes level and steady on the target line throughout the shot and your head has a better chance of staying with the gun.

Rabbits have that same effect on us. We judge the rabbits speed against the ground it’s bumping across and yes, it looks like it’s really moving. Truth is, the rabbit is slowing down faster than any other crossing target. Friction with the ground does that. Taking this slowing into account, Pat believes most shooters end up in front when they miss. The fix according to Pat is concentrating on the center of the target or even the backedge. Also slow down, synchronize your speed with the target and swing-through the target from behind. If you continue 5

Magazine Review CLAYTARGET NATION – Oct. 2017 John Shima and Todd Bender’s recent flood of articles on soft focus and hold points have been timely for me personally. I recently changed virtually all my hold and VPP (Visual Pickup Points) in my skeet game making their articles spot on to what I was doing. After two months of agonizing over what I was doing to my game and why, I realized it wasn’t the hold points that mattered as much as my VPP and how I applied it. To make a long story short, I finalized my adjustments based on the VPP more than anything else. This resulted in quicker target acquisition and the target’s visual clarity has been greatly improved. This is important if you want to break the target on purpose rather than just breaking it. I like to know exactly how and why I break each target rather than being satisfied or relieved that it broke.

Enough about me, John Shima sends us another installment emphasizing the importance of soft focus as part of our preshot routine. Soft focus isn’t something you snatch out of the air right before you call for the target. There are three components to achieving complete and effective soft focus and unless you use all three you won’t get the results you want. Harking back to the quiet eye doctrine, pause or as John advocates, come to a complete stop physically and visually if you want to achieve true soft focus.

Stopping and settling your vision at the VPP for 30-90 seconds allows you to quiet your mind, clearing it of everything except the

second part, awareness of your peripheral vision at your VPP. Awareness of your peripheral vision optimizes target detection. Finally, let’s not forget the last component of soft focus, depth of field. Extend your soft focus off, into the distance. At Markham that means the tree-line.

In his article last month Todd Bender stated he sat at the VPP for two seconds after mounting the gun. That’s quite a bit less than John’s 30-90 seconds. Don’t confuse John’s timeframe with Todd’s. I believe John is talking about the whole prep process getting ready to mount to the VPP. A good pre -shot routine should include a final stage or pause after your stance is set, visualization is complete, your breathing has been synchronized to the rhythm of your routine, the VPP and break point are identified, and you are standing in the ready position. The pause happens at the ready position as you prepare to mount the gun and go into true soft focus and this is where John’s 30-90 seconds occur. It is a final settling, like a cat preparing to pounce, concentrating its body, mind, and vision on the prey. If you roll through this pause you are in danger of delaying your target acquisition and subsequently you push your break point past the center stake. Come to a complete stop, set your soft focus out into the distance, and expand your awareness to your peripheral visual field where the target is going to appear.

————————————— I guess you can piggyback Gil and Vicki’s article off John’s. The Ash’s also discuss the pre-shot routine, specifically its rhythm and your subsequent shot execution. Elite shooters have a cadence and rhythm to the execution of their pre-shot routine and don’t vary it station to station, shot to shot. Once they have decided on a plan and how they will execute it they visualize it then step up to shoot. With visualization complete they fall into their pre-shot rhythm with no variation. Model yourself like an Elite shooter, decide on a shot execution plan, visualize it, and then fall into your pre-shot routine.

This eliminates any second guessing and equivocation on your part. Decide on a plan and execute it!

Magazine Review CLAYTARGET NATION – Oct. 2017—Cont’d This month Marty Fischer reminds us how to practice our mount. At home with an unloaded gun, stand in front of a mirror and practice mounting your gun. Remember both hands work together, push with the forearm hand, lift with the trigger hand. Use your nose in the mirror as your target. Try out the Maglite exercise, turning on a Maglite to its narrowest beam, stick it in the end of the barrel, pick a spot on the wall and practice mounting the gun to it.

Finally, mount the gun along the seam of the wall and ceiling, swinging along the seam. Good practice. I need to get some more batteries.

—————————————— As a trapshooter I am very familiar with the intercept swing method. In trap it’s called line-shooting. Clayton M. Rue calls this the cut-off method. Regardless of the name, it is an excellent method for many target presentations especially quartering targets. Clayton dispels one myth right off the bat, the line you swing on should not directly trace the tar-

get line. Staying under the target line allows you to keep the target in view and prevents covering it. The intercept method is based on this premise. Start below the target line and slide up to the breakpoint.

Shotgun Sports – November 2017 Michael J. Keyes, M.D., always takes the long road to tell us our eyesight may not be what it used to be and we need to be aware of and deal with our deteriorating visual acuity. As we age our ability to see detail and contrast weakens and our visual processing speed slows. We can fix this with exercises for our eyes. There are computer programs and apps for this and Michael recommends we use them to keep our visual acuity up to snuff.

Tinted lenses can here recapture some of our lost ability to see contrast. Finally, work on paying more attention to the detail you can see.

Look to the leading edge of the target.

TRAP & FIELD - October 2017 Cold isn’t generally a problem here in the Sunshine state but in the Spring we sometimes deal with it at Silver Dollar.

Bob Palmer’s article this month is aimed at our northern brethren dealing with the cold in the Winter Leagues.

Not much relevance here. I do suggest you prepare for it ahead of time. Get some lightweight winter clothes and have them ready when you need them.

Mostly you need something to block wind and something is long-sleeve.

Pack a pair of blue jeans and you have most of what you need.

Magazine Review THE RETREIVER JOURNAL – October/November 2017 Steve Smith provides some good advice before your hunting season starts.

Practice before the season on a trap, skeet, or sporting clays range and practice your mount at home. Check your gun fit. Shoot at the patterning board and make adjustments until you get the correct impacts you want. Remember practicing in your hunting clothes is essential to getting the correct gun fit.

Keep your head down and cheek on the gun. This is hard to check other than having someone film you as you shoot.

So, I suggest you do that. Move munt and shoot, don’t ride the bird. Your swing will slow down, you will lift your head, and you will look at the barrel to check your lead. Don’t ride the bird.

Don’t keep score while you are hunting.

Just shoot and enjoy. Warmup, do some stretching before you shoot. Here’s one from me. Use your key word from your pre-shot routine and when you sight a bird coming in immediately recite your key word or phrase in your head. Good Hunting!

about preparing for the season. Practice your mount and swing in the field right after you get the gun out of your vehicle. This insures you aren’t wearing anything that will impede your mount and swing. In case you didn’t know, the swing starts as the gun comes up with the mount. Don’t get in the habit of mounting the gun then swinging. Practice rotating your torso with your target as you mount the gun. Swing first before you mount.

If you are hunting game behind a dog, establish a good carry position for your gun. Butt under the armpit is the standard carry fashion so you are at the ready position when a bird jumps. Practice a relaxed mount. Don’t slam the gun to your face. Develop a smooth, clean, relaxed mount through practice at home.

Brad, like Steve Smith, also recommends not riding the target. Move, mount, and shoot.

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 5TH Registration: Opens 8:30 a.m. and will close at 10:00 a.m.

All scorecards must be turned in by 1:00 p.m. in order to be posted.

Entry Fee: $75 N.S.C.A., $75 Hunter, $35.00 SubJunior, Junior No Scorers or Trappers will be provided.

Shooters will be asked to squad themselves into groups of at least 4 and designate a field judge to verify scores for the squad.

This is a Targets Only format with No Lunch served.

COURSE RULES: All shooters and spectators are required to wear ear and eye protection on the course.

MAXIMUM LOADS PERMITTED: 12GA, 3 DR EQ, 1 1/8 oz. Shot 7 1/2.

It was a step-by-step process of slowly but surely inching toward the Olympic Games and using every day as a series of goals to be accomplished.
