Club News December was a good month for the club with a nice turnout of 102 shooters at the Bud Wolfe Classic. Brad Kidd won the event with a 94. Brian Du Quesnay came in second with the same score. Also turning in good scores were Joey Pinchin with a 92, and with 91’s were Alex Riera and Rollins Brown.

Of special note was Asif Sheerahamed’s winning tickets for both raffles. He won a set of shooting glasses and a Shotkam! Nice going Asif!

Twenty-one shooters shot 3,900 targets at the last trapshoot.

Alex Riera and Dax Demena led Singles with 95’s. Wu Yu Sheng won the Handicap event with a lone 90 followed by Dax Demena with an 89. Alex led the Doubles event with a lone 92.

Ed Ford, Jr. won the 12 ga., .410, and HOA at the Skeet shoot. Steve Fox won the 20 ga. and Bruce Ehrlich won the

28 ga. event.

We all look forward to seeing good attendance at the NFL shoot on Saturday, January 13th. This is a great charity event and is always attended by several Miami Dolphins NFL alumni. I hope you can attend the shoot and hangout with your friends and the alumni.

For trapshooters we have two big shoots at the end of the month at Silver Dollar. First is the Hall of Fame shoot. This year we are inducting Angel Estevez. Angel has been a regular at our shoots. I look forward to seeing many of you at the shoot and at the dinner. Second is the Silver Dollar Money Shoot replacing the Dixie Grand. This shoot has $30,000 in added money! I hope our Markham shooters can take home a good chunk of that money.

I look forward to seeing more of our snowbird friends at the club this month. See you at the club!

Magazine Reviews SHOOTING SPORTSMAN – January/ February 2018

Tom Roster is the guru on shotshell ballistics and performance. This month he tests HEVI-X, tungsten loads. The tungsten shot permits you to use one shot size smaller, meaning if you use #2’s in steel you can now use #3’s. Using tungsten gives you more pellets and better penetration with smaller shot. One drawback,

these loads cause tighter patterns and are best for 40+ yard shots. Use IC or at most modified for inside 40 yards.

Might be best as a second or third shot instead of as a first. Use a regular steel shell for the first shot and back it up with HEVI-X.

Magazine Review Shotgun Sports – January 2018 Layered learning is the topic of Michael J. Keyes, M.D. article this month. What is layered learning in relation to shooting? This is learning how to break simple, fundamental targets first with good technique before moving on to more difficult targets. In skeet that’s learning how to break the incoming targets on Stations 1, 2, 6, and 7. Learn how to break these targets with good technique and the incomers on 3, 4, and 5 become simple to master and make the outgoers an easier last step. This works the same for trap where you start by learning on a straight-away target or in sporting where you learn how to break targets on the Red course at Quail Creek before moving on to the Blue Course.

Too many shooters start with the easy targets then move on to more complex targets too soon. Without solidifying adequate technique, you leave yourself open to developing bad habits. Once developed they can’t be unlearned. If this happens, good technique

must be trained into your subconscious to replace the bad habit. Doesn’t mean the bad technique won’t resurface if you aren’t diligent and every time it happens you are again reinforcing bad technique. Avoid this cycle by only training good technique into your subconscious. This is only done by not pushing yourself before you are ready. That’s the story for beginning shooters but what about established shooters? If you are an established shooter and certain targets throw you for a loop, go back to similar fundamentally easy targets and practice them with the correct technique.

If you don’t know if you are using good technique get some coaching.

Allowing yourself to only use good shooting technique and fundamentals means you aren’t trusting to instinct and talent to get you through and event. You now have a foundation you can rely on. In trap this means you know you are always going to make the same move to break a quarter-angle off Post 5 every time. You aren’t just calling and reacting each time it comes out. Same is true in skeet. You know what you are going to do on every high 2. No more blind reaction, you have a plan to move at the flash, synchronize speed, and break the target. In sporting you know you are going to use sustained-lead on every right-to-left crossing target. Good technique will save you where instinct and talent will only get you so far.

Good technique and fundamentals are reproducible which allows consistency. Instinct and talent aren’t consistent and as we all know consistency is the hallmark of better shooting.

and watch it until it breaks and your scores will improve. _______________________ Always bias what you do to the recoverable position is Clayton M. Rues’ advice this month. When it comes to selecting a hold point always bias low. From the low position you can still recover and the target is always in sight. Too high and the target and its flight line are blocked. With barrel speed always bias to slow. Start too fast and it’s hard to recover. Too slow and all you need to do is speed up and as before the target is still in view.

CLAYTARGET NATION – December 2017 John Shima believes “intensity is a result of focus and desire”. Your desire is to break the next target and to break a good score.

An imbalance in your focus between the target and score is what causes problems. How do you tune your focus and desire to the task of breaking the target without letting your desire overwhelm your focus? Tune your focus onto the process. “Watch the target until it breaks”, is one of John’s mantras. Switch your focus to watching the target with intensity. This prevents your conscious mind from interfering with your shooting. Focus with intensity on the target

Regardless of the discipline we all need a shot plan when we step to a station or post. Paul Giambrone III lays out his for us to clone. Before a shoot Paul does a visualization of the weekend per Bob Palmer. Visualize the whole weekend all the way to the podium. Before we discuss Paul’s plan be reminded he is a process person, one target at a time, concentrate on your routine and the target. His routine is designed around accenting the process.

As to developing a shot plan it’s done for each station or post before you step to the line then once on the line you implement it. Call for the target and let the subconscious take over. Let soft focus turn into hard focus and let the process happen. Finally, review what took place after the post or station then rest. Paul cautions us to have your shot plan ready before you step into the box. Watch the shooter before you, pick out your holdpoint, soft focal point, and break point.

Remind yourself to hold under the lineof-flight and anything else of relevance.

calling for another target, leaving your last memory a positive one. Your shot routine may be detailed but if you practice it before implementation it should be easy to enact when you apply it. Remember consistency is again the key to good shooting. Be consistent and vigilant in using it.

Final advice, make sure you are ready to call for the target when you step to the line. After the shot do a quick review and make any adjustments. If you miss a target, visualize three good shots before 8

Watching the target until it breaks occupies the conscious mind while the subconscious mind does its job. With this is mind John Shima advises us again on our intention. Your intention to watch the target until it breaks must override your desire to break a good score. Let your ego get involved in its desire to break a good score and the conscious stops looking at the target with hard focus. Train yourself to watch the target with hard focus and trust to the process.

Clayton M. Rue also gets into the shot plan this month in his second article. As part of your planning for true pairs follow a few simple rules. When a pair includes one target that’s more difficult

than the other then hard focus on the difficult one and shoot it first. When confronted by one target in a pair that’s more difficult to see than the other shoot it first. Shoot on edge targets in a pair first. Shoot outgoing targets first.

If one target is incoming, shoot the other target first. Shoot the lower target first. Shoot the faster target first. Shoot the target with the most curl if both are curling. Shoot the smaller target first.

Shoot the trailing target first. When in doubt, visualize breaking both targets in different order. Pick the one that feels most comfortable. I like the last rule as a good one. The rest aren’t absolutes but are often correct.

SATURDAY JANUARY 20TH Registration: Opens 8:30 a.m. and will close at 10:00 a.m.

All scorecards must be turned in by 1:00 p.m. in order to be posted.

Entry Fee: $50 N.S.C.A., $50 Hunter, $35.00 SubJunior, Junior No Scorers or Trappers will be provided.

Shooters will be asked to squad themselves into groups of at least 4 and designate a field judge to verify scores for the squad.

This is a Targets Only format with No Lunch served.

COURSE RULES: All shooters and spectators are required to wear ear and eye protection on the course.

MAXIMUM LOADS PERMITTED: 12GA, 3 DR EQ, 1 1/8 oz. Shot 7 1/2.

Youth Program

I would like to welcome Ramiro Rodriquez to the program as one of our coach volunteers.

We continue to see about 18 Youth shooters every Monday night. We have been closed the last two Mondays for Christmas and New Years and I look forward to a great beginning to the 2018 year!
