Club News Hello everyone, another big month ahead for all of the Clay Target sports here in Florida. Silver Dollar in Tarpon Springs has big Trapshoots all month. Trail has the Teddy Montoto and Jacksonville has the fish fry at the end of the month for Skeet shooters. This is the biggest month of Sporting Clays shooting in Florida with the Kreighoff Classic, Caribbean Classic, and the Gator Cup. Good luck to all of our shooters who will be participating in these events.

A total of 66 shooters attending the last sporting clays event. Rodrigo took top honors with Maximo Olivieri taking Runner-Up both shooting 92’s. Ed Greene’s 93 was high followed by a 92 by Dax Demena in the Singles event at the last trapshoot. Alex Riera had the high scores in both the Handicap and Doubles event.

I want to congratulate Alex Riera on his great shooting at the FTA Hall of Fame Shoot. Alex was Runner-Up in the Singles and Doubles Championships, finishing the weekend by winning the HAA. Dax Demena also did well at the

Silver Dollar Open. He broke a 99 to be Champion of the first hundred of Sunday’s championships.

Great shooting guys!

Bruce Gordon and Paul Billingsly tied at 45 in the 12 gauge event at the last skeet shoot. Paul prevailed in the shootoff to take top honors.

Bruce went on to win all the remaining events: .410, 28, 20, Dbls, and HOA. Great shooting guys.

As you can see, the skeet shoot is on Saturday the 17th this month.

Sporting Clays is on Sunday the 4th and the Trapshoot is on Sunday the 25th.

I want to congratulate Tony Boyd for being promoted to Range Master at the range! We all look forward to working with him to keep Markham one of Florida’s best public clubs.

The Youth Program continues to thrive with 18 or more shooters participating every Monday. Tony has been an instrumental part of the program all these years. He is relinquishing that role and we welcome Kat in her new role.

Looking forward to another fun month at the club. Hope to see all of you there this month.

Magazine Reviews TrapShootingUSA – January/February 2018 As much as I love tennis and baseball, I was never going to become a professional in either sport. While I may have exceptional reflexes when it comes to shooting a clay target I do not have the requisite fast twitch muscles, wrist speed, or reaction time needed to return a 120 mph serve or to hit 90 mph fastball. Never going to happen, no matter how much I practiced or coaching I received. Why do I mention this? I feel the same way when I read shooting articles where the writer pushes speed as a necessity for great shooting.

Some people are just not going to be able to duplicate what they recommend. Readers who push to do what the writers suggest may quickly develop bad habits and their scores may become worse rather than not better. Keep your shooting under control and don’t try to do anything you can’t reproduce on demand.

With that as a setup, let’s review Sean Hawley’s article. Without saying “shoot faster” Sean lays out some reasons for using a more “aggressive” shooting style on Handicap targets. Yes, a target under power (closer to the trap) has more spin and is more consistent in its flight. This means it breaks more easily and won’t be affected by wind like a target shot in the later stages of flight. More gun movement (longer swing) means more chance of error in the swing.

Closer break point to the house means a more uniform pattern and higher energy in the shot leading to a better and more likely break of the target.

Be prepared when you shoot. Don’t call for a target unless you are totally ready for it.

It’s easy to fall victim to your squad’s rhythm. Call for the target only when you are ready and your eyes are set in soft focus.

Pay attention to shooting conditions, are all the mic’s good, is wind affecting the target, is the house centered or shifted? Finally, be observant when moving from one trap to another. Watch the targets, are they the same speed and distance from one trap to another? Little things add up to more targets. Pay attention and don’t lose targets unnecessarily.

Larry Grenevicki, M.ED., has had a long run of articles on shotshells, gunpowder, and shotshell boxes over the last two years.

These are great sources of shooting lore.

I’ve always enjoyed learning about the history of our sport and shotgunning in general.

Magazine Review CLAYTARGET-NATION – JANUARY 2018 Shooting the year round is one of the advantages of living in Florida but sometimes it can be wise to take some time off from competitive shooting. Paul Giambrone III recommends taking a vacation from tournament shooting every year to restore your competitive drive. Even professional athletes have an off-season and shooters should be no different. That doesn’t mean you quit shooting. Paul suggests spending the time away doing some recreational shooting with friends, hunting, or doing high quality practice rather than high quantity.

Also, when you are practicing make sure you don’t push yourself too far. Quit when your performance starts to fall off. If you planned on shooting four boxes and you feel your shooting is falling off during the third box quit and call it a day. Pushing yourself to shoot that extra box may end up having adverse effects, ingraining sloppy habits into your shooting routine which can become bad habits. Quality over quantity is always the rule. __________________________________ A good sporting clays target setter can play havoc with how you perceive targets. Clayton M. Rue cautions us to look carefully at each station’s presentation to prevent the target setter from getting the better of us.

mediately so you don’t forget. I pull out my phone and use my memo app. Transfer it later to either a separate journal section or to a 3x5 index card. These are the highlighted things you want to work on next time you hit the practice trap or reminders for the next tournament event.

SUNDAY FEBRUARY 4TH Registration: Opens 8:30 a.m. and will close at 10:00 a.m.

All scorecards must be turned in by 1:00 p.m. in order to be posted.

Entry Fee: $50 N.S.C.A., $50 Hunter, $35.00 SubJunior, Junior No Scorers or Trappers will be provided.

Shooters will be asked to squad themselves into groups of at least 4 and designate a field judge to verify scores for the squad.

This is a Targets Only format with No Lunch served.

COURSE RULES: All shooters and spectators are required to wear ear and eye protection on the course.

MAXIMUM LOADS PERMITTED: 12GA, 3 DR EQ, 1 1/8 oz. Shot 7 1/2.

Youth Program

The holidays are over and we are finally returning to normal on Monday nights. Our most recent practice saw 20 students with 11 on the beginners’ field. We want to thank Tony Boyd for showing up all these years for the county. He is a true friend of the program and has been instrumental with his assistance. Thanks again!
