Club News Markham shooters did well at the Dixie Grand last month. Alex Riera won Runner-up Class A in the Singles Championship, Steve Norris won two trophies, 5th Place in the Caesar Guerini Handicap and Sr. Vet Runner-up in the Championship Handicap. Andrew Loitz won two Jr. Gold Runner-up trophies in the Doubles and HAA championships. Marilyn Lehrfeld won 11 trophies during the week in Lady 2. Congrats to you all!

Steve Norris also won two trophies at the Hall of Fame shoot and Andrew Loitz lead all Florida shooters winning all three championships and the High-All-Around. Congrats again!

The Skeet shoot was cut short by weather again. Ten shooter competed with Luke Ford winning the 12 with a 48 and Paul Billings won the 20 with a 49. Ed Ford, Sr. won the 28 and David Worboys won the .410.

Angel Estevez led a field of 19 shooters again in the singles with a 96, two targets over his Runner-up Marilyn Lehrfeld. Dax Demena won the Handicap with a lone 90

and Joe Loitz led the Doubles with a

91.

We had a great turnout of 71 shooters for the last sporting clays shoot!

Scores we lower than the last few events with Julio Martinez leading the field by four targets with a lone 91.

Lucio Gomez was Runner-up with an 87. We had 26 hunter class shooters joining us. We look forward to seeing these shooters again .

February is of course a hot month for sporting clays with the Krieghoff Classic, Gator Cup, and Caribbean Classic all within reasonable driving range. I look forward to seeing our shooters take home some trophies from these events.

Trapshooters have their biggest shoots coming up in March. I want to point out the Bill Jacobson Memorial shoot the week before the Southern Grand. There is $22,500 in added in trophy money and into the Lewis Class Purse. This will be a great shoot to attend!

Magazine Reviews Trap & Field – January 2017 I really can’t speak on the offeye taking over on shots because it doesn’t happen to me.

I am sure it can happen and Phil Kiner gives us some situations where it does. He provides no cures for this malady, he is saving it for next month’s article. Wait and see the review on the cures.

Magazine Review .CLAYTARGET NATION – January 2017 Shooting .410 causes an unconscious and/ or conscious desire to be more precise. The leads are the same, our POI is the same, typically with tube sets, even the weight of the gun is the same. Yet we fear if we aren’t perfect the .410 pattern will be too small to hit the target. John Shima points out the actual differences in the pattern between a 12 and .410 and on the surface they don’t sound much different. The truth is, the 12 has an effective pattern 30” in diameter while the effective pattern for the .410 is only 20”. One third smaller yet as I stated earlier, everything else is the same, lead, POI, and gun weight.

John cautions us not to give in to the fears of our ego but to let our adaptive unconscious do its job in breaking the target.

Don’t look for the lead, let it happen. Sticking with his theme this year, “you must care less about breaking the next target, and care more about watching it until it breaks.” Let it happen, don’t make it happen.

the smaller pattern. Trust your abilities and your move to the target. Don’t over-think it! Allow yourself to miss, don’t put useless pressure on your shooting, let it happen.

Gil and Vicki Ash are right on point this month, you can’t effectively be in two places at once. Think back on some of your best shooting. You call for the target and all you are aware of is the target downrange and nothing else. You can’t be standing at the station thinking about what you are going to do, you need to be downrange with the target! Walk onto the station or into the cage knowing how you are going to break each target. Visualize it, step onto the pad or cage and follow the rest of your normal Pre -shot routine in preparation for the shot.

Top shooters are always downrange with the target once they call for it.

I like his idea, letting “soft hands” control the gun. The concept here is to minimize sudden vertical movements by the gun which can draw your vision away from the target. This speaks to a problem I have been having in trap. I will get back to you on how this skeet application works in a trap setting.

His final notes remind us to break our .410 targets before the stake taking advantage of

Shotgun Sports – February 2017 Mental toughness and the Zone are Michael J. Keyes, M.D.’s hot topics this month. He concentrates on impediments to reaching the Zone: match stress, poor technique, and fitness issues. I think we all understand the Zone. All of us have been there and felt it at one time or another.

John Shima calls it caring more about watching the target break than actually breaking it. Gil and Vicki talk of it in terms of being downrange with the target rather than in the cage thinking about it.

Michael’s complaint is there isn’t enough detail teaching how to achieve it. This isn’t something you teach, it’s something you believe in. Yes, the more confident you are, the more fundamentally sound you are, the fitter you are, and the less you care about match stress, the quicker more easily you get into the Zone. No road map can be printed to a place that only exits in your head!

Again, he harps on our need to rewire our brains to be more precise and consistent.

This is true. We must learn how to concentrate on doing the same thing repeatedly to perfection. To get improve we must make each shot perfect. For him skills such as relaxation exercises, visualization, imagery, concentration, planning, etc. are the training methods requisite to reaching the Zone. They will help, there is no doubt about it, but truly, perfecting your fundamentals are far more important. Perfect execution allows you to ignore all outside influences increasing concentration for the job at hand. Without acceptable fundamentals, no amount of mental discipline will help you.

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 5TH Registration: Opens 8:30 a.m. and will close at 10:00 a.m.

All scorecards must be turned in by 1:00 p.m. in order to be posted.

Entry Fee: $50 N.S.C.A., $50 Hunter, $35.00 SubJunior, Junior No Scorers or Trappers will be provided.

Shooters will be asked to squad themselves into groups of at least 4 and designate a field judge to verify scores for the squad.

This is a Targets Only format with No Lunch served.

COURSE RULES: All shooters and spectators are required to wear ear and eye protection on the course.

MAXIMUM LOADS PERMITTED: 12GA, 3 DR EQ, 1 1/8 oz. Shot 7 1/2.

Even with the cold we still get great crowds of kids on Monday night. Last Monday was the first time in my memory we had to close for illness. Tony Boyd called in with pneumonia. Get well soon Tony!
