Club News If you didn’t know, Range Master Doug LaPrade has retired and there will be a change of management at the club. In the interim Tony Boyd and Gary Hooker will be running day to day operations at the club.

The BiG Children’s Foundation Charity shoot is back. It will be held Saturday, October 28th. If you would like to contribute to the shoot and participate in running or shooting in the event feel free to contact me, Joe Loitz, 954-8575278.

The Trap shoot was attended by 13 shooters this month. Ted Galatis won the Singles with a lone 95.

Following with 93’s were Dax Demena, Ed Greene, and Michael Pilch. The Handicap event was won by Ted Vandling with a lone 81. Doubles was won by Frank Marshall with a lone 93. Nice shooting guys.

The skeet shoot was shortened by rain. Only the 12 ga. and the preliminary events were shot. Michael Pilch won the Preliminary event with a 47 and Peter Messios

won the main 12 ga event with another lone 47.

Gerry Stumm won the Sporting Clays shoot with a lone 93 leading the field by two over Runner-Up Ramon Pitter. The shoot was attended by 53 shooters. A nice turnout for a hot August day.

Good Luck to all our shooters who will be attending the 2017 Skeet World Championships and the 2017 Sporting Clays Nationals.

We look forward to hearing about your success!

Looks like we all survived Irma without too much inconvenience.

The club is getting back to normal, cleaning up the detritus left after the storm. To be honest the staff at Markham did a great job putting the club back online as quickly as possible. Give them a big thanks for their efforts.

Looking forward to a busy start of the shooting season and the return of our snowbirds in the next two months. See you at the club.

Magazine Reviews Shotgun Sports – 2017 October Vision and the visual pick up point (VPP) have been Todd Bender’s topic of interest for the last two months. This is overwhelmingly important in trap and skeet where you have just over a second to respond and break outgoing skeet target and most trap targets. Todd advises us to follow four benchmarks when setting your VPP: Direction, Distance, Peripheral, and Eye Set. His personal VPP setup starts after he assumes his stance on the station. Direction is the first benchmark he checks. This is the actual setup line for your VPP. If you always look 15’ outside the window on Station 3 then this is the direction you look. Draw a line from where you stand on 3 thru the point 15’ outside the high-house window and you now have your direction. In trap your VPP Direction off Post 2 would be a line drawn through your stance on Post 2 through where you look for the target. If you look 2’ inside the corner of the house and 2’ up then the line from Post 2 through this point is the Direction you will be looking.

can react to the target when it enters his field of view. Gaze into the far Distance along the Direction of your VPP, with your attention on your Peripheral Vision. Hope that made sense. Play with how far off into the distance your gaze needs to be and how you can keep your attention on your peripheral vision. You may be surprised to find you are bringing your vision in to close the window or traphouse and that expanding the Distance away from it makes you a more perceptive and reactive shooter.

Finally, we add the fourth parameter, Eye Set. This relates specifically to the quiet eye and quiet gun philosophy. Todd holds for two seconds after mounting and before he calls for the target. He freely admits this is idiosyncratic to each person. Personally, I can’t sit with the gun on my shoulder for over one second or so. This, by the way is he does and he freely suggests you need to discover for yourself how much time you should wait before calling for the target. Think about what you do visually before you call for the target and think about incorporating some of Todd’s ideas into your routine.

What you do with that direction is just as important as where you are looking. The next three benchmarks define how you should look towards your VPP Direction.

Distance is the how far your gaze should extend along your Direction. He gets somewhat confusing on this point. While he is looking in a specific direction his conscious attention is on his Peripheral Vision so he 5

Keyes, M.D. reminds us it can come from our shooting style and the drift that creeps into it. This noise takes the form of over-thinking, mechanical noise from poor-fitting guns, bad weather, wooded backgrounds, and psychological stress from the event or from other stressers. This isn’t the point of his article. The crux of this month’s submission is to get us to do a “prospective hindsight” before we shoot an event.

We can compile these noted errors and can do some preventative maintenance to fix our shooting in the future. Rue tells us we must identify the flaws in our shooting game then practice perfectly to create a new paradigm in our shooting. Perfect repetition and perfect practice make this possible. Perfect repetition and perfect practice mean you practice with good technique, eliminating the any flaws and then repeating that practice until you groove it into your shooting permanently.

is twice the lead back from your barrels. Your gun hold must be below the flight path (below the window always works) and your visual focus should be beyond the barrel of your gun. I agree with Todd on this, place your soft focus as far off in the distance as you can. Play with this like I suggested in Todd’s article.

____________________________________ John Shima gives some further insights into the Visual Pickup Point in his article this month. He believes your VPP for a post should be twice the lead for the target at any station. For example, if your lead on Station 4 is 3’ then you VPP should be 6’ from your hold point. Station 4 would probably require a VPP of 4’ from your hold point.

John also states the VPP determines the hold point. The ideal hold point is the point along the flight path where your central vision acquires the target. Establish that and your VPP 7

least I always thought it did.

Don Currie found there are three common elements to elite athletes pre-shot routines: deep breathing, visualization, and a trigger thought.

I can vouch for all except Don’s explanation of deep breathing. He believes you should take at least two deep breaths while you visualize the shot. I concentrate on my breathing when I am shooting, timing it so I call for the target at the bottom of my exhale when I shoot. I don’t know anything about the deep breathing he suggests. Granted two deep breathes will relax you but controlling your breathing is part of almost every skill sport. Timing your breathing kind of takes care of that issue at

Always visualize the shot as you step onto a post or station and don’t forget to visualize the pickup and second shot on doubles, true pairs, and report pairs. Many people visualize their first shot, forgetting the second. Visualize both the first shot and the transition to the second. As to a trigger word, I’ve used them and ignored them. It’s more important to concentrating on getting your VPP correct than it is to remember to mentally take the trash out of your head. When I do use a trigger word it is almost always simply the word “smooth”.

Without a good setup how can you hope to have a good finish? Todd Bender reminds us you don’t have to recover from a good start and he’s right!

Most targets are missed before the call either from poor fundamentals or poor mental/visual preparation. It all starts with a good pre-shot routine. Create one and then be consistent with it. If it isn’t working make changes to it and stick with the changes until you come up with something better.

Mental mistakes come from inconsistently applying your pre-shot routine. Your pre-shot routine should be the same on every station or post with the addition of the small mental cues specific to each station, post, or target presentation. I visualize differently on each post in trap and each station in skeet. I also do a quick check of my cautions on each post. What does that mean? I check my hold point on Post 4 of trap to assure it isn’t too high. Too high and I will miss

quarters high and behind. Cautions are the yellow signs you look for on the road to tell you of any road hazards ahead and you should know what your yellow signs should be on each station and post. You run through these quickly just before you set your vision on the post.

In sporting clays you can use your personal yellow signs to remind you to stay under rabbits and to look at the center or back of the rabbit rather than the front when they are slow rollers. On true pairs remind yourself to allow time to truly acquire the second target on two close flying targets. Speed between shots when you don’t need it costs more targets than anyone likes to admit. Yellow signs are the cautions you need to review before every setup. Add in consistency and you create a much stronger preshot routine.

Magazine Review TRAP & FIELD – Sept. 2017 Winning builds confidence, more confidence builds momentum and before you know it you start believing and living a more successful attitude where you expect to win. Failure leads to a similar less sanguine attitude where you feel pain and embarrassment which can spiral into a losing attitude. How do you avoid the downward spiral and initiate an upward one. One way according to Bob Palmer would be to assume the hermit lifestyle and practice non-competitive targets alone without the pressures of your peers.

Bob also suggests another approach using his patented visualization methods to boost your confidence. Like Lanny Bassham he believes you need to build your self esteem by visualizing success. Do this consistently and you will jump start your confidence by expecting to do well. Over time visualizing breaking problem targets, running 25 straight or several stations in a row in sporting clays will do this. Go back to Clayton Rue’s advice and make sure your practice is technically sound. All the confidence in the world won’t overcome bad technique or less than perfect practice. I am not a fan of visualization about results.

The object is the target. Visualizing a perfect target break will do tons more for your game than visualizing victory.

For sure two things are important to success in shooting, seeing the target and your gun’s Point Of Impact (POI). Your personal POI is intrinsic to you. Everyone swings at a different pace and at a different rhythm to the target, so one POI does not fit all. Phil Kiner suggests we play with our POI by adding moleskin to your comb, one 1/16th” strip at a time, practicing straight-away targets off Post 3. Watch your breaks and keep adding 1/16th” strips until you stop smoking targets then start lowering the comb again until you are back to smoking targets. Maybe you will find your current POI isn’t best for you and a higher one will make you a better shooter.

For the record, if you aren’t smoking targets now, you should certainly try this. Everyone should be able to smoke targets from the 16 yard line in trap. If you aren’t smoking targets in any of the shooting sports you need to ask yourself what’s missing or what are you 11

All scorecards must be turned in by 1:00 p.m. in order to be posted.

Entry Fee: $50 N.S.C.A., $50 Hunter, $35.00 SubJunior, Junior No Scorers or Trappers will be provided.

Shooters will be asked to squad themselves into groups of at least 4 and designate a field judge to verify scores for the squad.

This is a Targets Only format with No Lunch served.

Youth Program

Almost every Monday night for twelve years Steve and I have shown up to coach and I have to relate a great story about all those years. We have taught four sisters and brothers from one family and recently I worked with the youngest of that family. The older sister is 15 and is starting her first semester at FAU! Her younger sister can’t wait to follow in her footsteps. The older wants to be an orinithologist and the younger sister wants to be a lawyer. What an exceptional group of kids who come from an incredible family. This is what makes our work so much fun and important. The younger brother did exceptional on his first night. Steve will no doubt agree with me, it is a privilege and honor getting to work in such a great program with such wonderful families. Thanks for the support!
