Club News Busy month all over the state for Sporting Clays, Skeet, and Trap.

Our recent Skeet shoot was attended by 14 shooters. Bruce Gorden lead the 12, 28, .410, and HOA. Luke Ford led the 20 and Doubles chased closely by Ed, Sr. in both events. Nice shooting guys!

In trap Steve Norris shot only two events and won both, the Handicap with a 97 and the Doubles with a 90. He even ran the first 50 in the Handicap! Anthony Panachio led 26 shooters in the Singles with a 93. Nice shoot, we threw 4,600 targets and the Skeet shoot threw 1,950!

Even though we were competing against the Krieghoff Classic we still drew 55 entries! Joe Loitz led all shooters with a 92 followed closely behind by Alex Riera with 91 and Julio Martinez with a lone 90 to win A class.

There are two shoot flyers in this month’s newsletter: The Bill Jacobson Memorial shoot at Silver Dollar and The Young Guns Fundraiser at Quail Creek. Both of these shoots are special ones for the shooters.

The Jacobson has

$22,500 in added money and the Young Guns shoot raises money for the most successful youth program in the country! If you are a trapshooter or a sporting clays shooter make an effort to honor Bill Jacobson and the Young Guns by attending.

March is another month of big shoots in Skeet and Trap. The Seniors shoot in St. Augustine is a major shoot every year and of course in trap we have the Southern Grand and the Florida State shoot at Silver Dollar. I will be at both of the shoots at Silver Dollar and look forward to seeing our shooters there.

Just a reminder, the trapshoot this month is on Sunday March 12th.

The April sporting clays shoot has been cancelled since it falls on Easter Sunday. Steve Haynie will be stepping down as the Sporting Clays Chairperson and will be taking over those duties. I want to thank Steve from all of us at the club for his selfless dedication to running our Skeet and Sporting Clays events all these years. See you at the club!

Magazine Reviews SHOOTING SPORTSMAN – March/April 2017 Interesting article by Ed Carroll this month. He interviewed seven shooters who shoot seven different brands of guns: Brad Kidd, Jr. – Zoli Ambassador, Richard Faulds – Caesar Guerini – Invictus V Supersport, Wendell Cherry – Perazzi MX2000, Derrick Mein – Kolar Max Lite Sporting, Matt Fisher – Balser F3 Competition Sporting Luxus, Will Fennell – Kreighoff K-80 Parcours, and Anthony Matarese, Jr. – Beretta DT11. Weights on the guns ranged from 8 to 9.25 lbs. Most shot a flat, tapered rib using small beads.

Richard Faulds is the only one without beads. The majority preferred a POI of 60/40 with 32” barrels. Only Wendell Cherry shot 34” barrels. Many shot fixed chocks and the preference seemed to be tighter chocks (modified to full). All of them shot over 25,000 targets a year with some shooting over 35,000.

Magazine Review Shotgun Sports – March 2017 Relaxation, visualization, self-talk, etc. are our tools to combat match stress and Michael J. Keyes , M.D. believes visualization is the least understood. According to Michael, visualization is directed daydreaming. Like everyone else, he tells us the more detailed the visualization the more effective it will be.

Some individuals have problems visualizing something like the swing of a tennis racket, golf club, or a shotgun. From what I have read visualization is a skill like any other and for some people it takes practice to realize its full potential. Once you can visualize your shots, practice standard shots until you can pull them up anytime you need, like right before you call for the target.

I’ve read over and over again from a dozen sports psychologists and just as many coaches that you need to make your visualization as “rich” and lifelike as possible. Honestly, I have never seen the research on it. They all like to quote Jack Nicklaus: “I never hit a shot, even in practice, without having a sharp in-focus picture of it in my head.” What they seem to forget to emphasize about Jack’s visualization is that the result Jack is aiming for is more important than the exact flight path of the ball. His in-focus picture is of the ball’s path to where he wants it to land.

My bet is he doesn’t include the wind blowing, the sound of the crowd, and the feel of the sun in his visualization. He is looking for the feel of the shot and the path he wants it to take and nothing else. The whole point is to put the ball where he wants it to land and

he is calling up how the ball is going to feel coming off the club and the ball’s path so he has a clear focus on what needs to happen.

Mr. Nicklaus is imagining the ball’s trajectory in the same way Roger Federer imagines a shot down the line in a tennis match. As shooters, our mind’s eye should be seeing our barrel moving to the insertion point at the exact spot needed to create the perfect sight picture. All the rest is unicorns and rainbows. Making it into a five-star movie isn’t the goal. The goal is making the shot and for Jack, making it vivid is about seeing the ball arc through the air to his chosen landing zone and imagining how it will feel coming off the club. In his mind the shot is crystal clear. It is not about feeling the sun on your face, the wind at his back, etc. it’s about feeling the ball arc through the exact path he wants it to go. For a shotgunner the image is about the barrels being exactly where you want them to be, moving at the exact speed in relation to the target to create the final sight picture for the shot.

Gil and Vicki Ash are adamant, it is not a still picture in your head and I agree. It is a snippet of video showing the critical creation of the sight picture. When you are stepping into the cage or onto a station or post you don’t have time to visualize the target leaving the machine or house and traversing whatever path it is going to take. No, you want to start your video at your pickup point, through your hold point and into the sight picture.

Save the wind blowing in your face stuff for some other time. In the least you want to imagine/ rehearse in your mind what you need to do to get to the final creation of the sight picture. For me this is the insertion point for my barrels in sporting clays and the flash of the target in trap or skeet.

Additionally, Michael reminds us self-talk is for before you get to the line and is used to keep negative feelings away from your shooting. This again is something you need to practice. The king of self-talk is Lanny Bassham.

Look into his books on the subject for further explanations. Also don’t fall into shooting with a group that isn’t conducive to good scores. Some people are simply toxic to your shooting. Avoid them at signup time. Finally, visualization is something you need to 7

Magazine Review CLAYTARGET NATION – February 2017 Habits are the topic this month, how they get cued into our behavior, become routine, and how we are rewarded by them. John Shima cautions us against falling for the wrong habit. Many shooters believe creating the perfect lead picture is the object of shooting when it should be the creation of the perfect feel for the target. Don’t overthink it! Trust your abilities and your Shooting Self, soft focus on your pickup point then let your adaptive unconscious react to the target and watch it break. Looking for the perfect lead means involving your conscious mind and is an attempt to control the result. The object isn’t the perfect lead, it is the perfect break of the target. Watching the target break rather than trying to make it break is the Shima method.

Shooting to hit the target rather than shooting not to miss is the difference between an active, forward thinking attitude and a passive, reactionary one. One of my mantras has always been to “break the target as hard as possible.” I want smoke not pieces which explains my tendency to be one choke tighter than anyone else. Hitting the target with the center of the pattern means I am always striving to manipulate the shotgun to put the pattern exactly where I need it. Breaking the target isn’t the object, crushing the target is!

Rue reminds us, if you are shooting to hit you are actively trying to put the pattern in the best possible collision point in front of the target. Shooting to not miss is more of a hope you are putting the pattern in the correct collision point. If there is trepidation in your shooting it limits how you will react and move.

Shooting not to miss is a conscious decision. Shooting to hit is what John Shima is professing in his articles. Leave score out of the equation and let your Shooting Self take over. If you find yourself shooting not to miss, shift gears and let your adaptive unconscious (subconscious) take over. Shoot to watch the target break not to make it break. You’ll find your shooting is more relaxed and your scores improve.

If you have never traveled with your firearm or even if you have, Sherry Kerr gives us a good article this month on the ins and outs of the process. Nice comprehensive article with some great pointers!

What do we miss when we step up to shoot? In skeet and trap you should always be aware of your background, wind direction, and speed. All factors that will affect your target’s flight. In sporting you need to be aware of each presentation’s flight pattern and characteristics. Peter Blakely passes on some sage advice this month on reading targets. Minis come out fast and slam on the brakes after 15 yards. Battues accelerate faster than other targets after they peak and start descending. Wait on the mini and shoot the battue before it hits the gas.

If the battue does get away, keep locked into your gun and bend forward, bowing to the target as it falls. This prevents pulling the gun away from your face and arm shooting it. Dropping targets don’t necessarily drop straight down. They curl or

curve to the right or left, a good reminder to watch your “look birds” all the way to the ground. As for rabbits, Peter doesn’t like swing-through on them. Insert in front of and stay under them. “Shoot the feet.”

Be conscious of your background. Sloping background may hide the true flight path of a target. Distance to the target will dictate whether you should change shells or choke. I personally shoot light (1145 FPS) 8’s most of the time and switch to 1200 fps 7 ½’s for anything beyond 30 yards. Watch your targets, be aware of your background, and think before you step into the cage.

Tom Roster wrote an article on the correct gun and ammo for beginners this month. If Tom has one fault it is his aversion to recoil. I know this from other articles he has written. He vehemently believes no shell over 7/8 oz. or over 1200 should ever be shot by a beginning shooter or a shooter less than 140 lbs. in weight.

If it were up to him everyone would be shooting ¾ oz. in a 28 gauge. Only a couple of the kids in the Young Guns program at Quail Creek shoot a 28. The rest all shoot 12 or 20’s. All the 20’s shoot 7/8 oz. loads and the 12 gauge shells are all 1 oz. at 1210 fps rounds. I have never heard any complaints about recoil. Sorry Tom, you are great with numbers but reality sometimes doesn’t prove out what you believe..

All scorecards must be turned in by 1:00 p.m. in order to be posted.

Entry Fee: $50 N.S.C.A., $50 Hunter, $35.00 SubJunior, Junior No Scorers or Trappers will be provided.

Shooters will be asked to squad themselves into groups of at least 4 and designate a field judge to verify scores for the squad.

This is a Targets Only format with No Lunch served.

COURSE RULES: All shooters and spectators are required to wear ear and eye protection on the course.
