Club News Hector J Marrero Class B First Team We had a great turnout of 58 shooters for our last sporting event.

Rocky Long had the high score of 88 over Gary Gray with the same score. The skeet shoot was small with 10 shooters and 1750 targets thrown. Tod Bowman swept the 12, 20, 28, .410 and HOA. Neil Woolfolk was the only one to challenge Tod by winning the Doubles event with a nice 48.

The Trapshoot saw 17 shooters shooting 3,200 targets. Alex Riera was all alone with a 99 in the Singles. He also led the Handicap with an 89. Joe Loitz won the Doubles with a lone 88.

At the next trapshoot we will be holding a Doubles Marathon concurrently with the other events.

One trap will be set up for Doubles shooting and Doubles can be registered all day long.

I want to congratulate all of the South Florida Shooters who were recognized last month: Sporting Clays All-Americans: Ashley Little First Team Lady

With June comes the Hurricane Season. If you are going to the club get there early. The rains seem to hit with higher frequency after 11:00 in the morning so get there early.

With the end of the school year we expect a quick upturn in the Youth shooting on Monday nights. Hopefully not too many sessions will be interrupted or cancelled by rain.

Haven’t heard anything new from the new Palm Beach Club. Am going to check out the new trap and skeet fields at Indian River Country Shooting Range next weekend.

Holden Kriss, the old manger at Markham manages this facility. I will take some pictures and post them in the July newsletter.

Magazine Reviews TRAP & FIELD – May 2017 Phil Kiner hits some good points this month reviewing the basics of Doubles shooting. The first target sets up the second target is one of my mantras and Phil agrees. We also both agree, don’t listen to the people who say shoot the first target as fast as possible. Find a place where you feel comfortable seeing and breaking it.

Do this by experimenting with different hold and look points until you find ones that work for you. Experimenting with your doubles shooting is hard to do if you can’t find a club that throws doubles practice. Gulf Coast Clays and Silver Dollar are very accommodating when it comes to this.

your squad is scheduled to go to the line and visualize how you are going to shoot the event. During the final wait, get away from everyone and clear your head of any distractions. Once you step to the line trust your game and let it play. Seek out your natural shooting rhythm and don’t let go of it. His final suggestions are the classic ones, eat right, do some physical training, and let go of your mistakes.

Phil and I also agree that you do see the first target break as you switch to the second target. If you don’t see that first bird break how do know you are shooting it correctly? You are destroying your rhythm if you are pressing to break that first bird and are switching your vision away from it too quickly. Slow down and break both targets.

We get some suggestions on how to deal with flaws in our mental game this month from Bob Palmer. If you have problems getting started in a competition o work on your preparation, distraction control, and your trust. Todd Bender and countless others visualize the whole competition before they ever step to the line. Get away from everyone 30 to 60 minutes before 5

CLAY TARGET NATION – May 2017 When you really smoke a target do you remember seeing the lead or the target? Paul Giambrone, III is big on seeing the target and not the lead as we all should be. This month he reminds us to go into soft focus at our focal point to pick up the target in our peripheral vision. This doesn’t mean we are relaxing, quite the opposite.

You need to be attentive while in soft focus so you are ready to move at the flash and slide into hard focus. Focus then goes to the target and not the lead.

Going into soft focus is part of a good Pre-shot routine and prepares you for the whole shot sequence. It also clears out residual thoughts in the conscious mind and gives it something to attend to, looking for the target.

If you have high expectations you should also be committed to putting in the time to them. Gil and Vicki Ash remind us this month to keep our expectations in line with our commitment and

to leave our expectations in the car when we shoot in a tournament. As soon as you start thinking about your score and what you expected to shoot you lose concentration and targets.

Some coaches teach shotgunning and some teach course strategy. Clayton M. Rue loves to teach strategy for sporting clays.

According to him there are five key steps to approaching a station. Step 1 is read the target: target type, speed, distance, angle of approach/departure, etc., and where is the transition point. Mr. Rue advises against attempting a target at its transition point. The common mistake is shooting over the target at transition. Shoot it before or after transition and Clayton suggests before.

Typically a point near where you can first clearly see the target. This will be somewhere between the launch point and the hold point.

Step 2 is selecting a break point. If you pick the right one you have a reference point to consistently break the rest. If you miss you have a starting point to change your strategy. Clayton suggests shooting the target just before the transition point. The target has bled off all its speed and it is still traveling in a straight line. Step 3 is foot position. Set up for your break point.

Step 4 is hold point selection. Generally, faster targets require a hold point further back from the break point slower targets mean a hold point closer to the break point. If you can’t decide on a hold point, hold halfway between the point where you first clearly see the target and your break point. Keep your hold point below the target line of flight so you don’t “spoil the line.” Finally, pick a focal point.

Shotgun Sports – June 2017 Michael J. Keyes, M.D. is an expert on mental training making his articles packed with the “whys” of how it works but he is many times short on practical application.

This month’s article is one of those instances. In short, your practice sessions should be challenging but not overwhelming, relax during these sessions to get the most out of them, and visualize what you are trying to accomplish.

What is a challenging but not overwhelming practice session for trap and skeet? I know what this means in sporting clays. If right to left targets trouble you find one crossing at 25-30 yards and practice it till you own it.

Try different swing methods, sustained, swing-thru, pull-ahead, even intercept and decide which one works best for you. Then move on to trying one at 35+ yards until

you master it.

With skeet you can work on doubles between stations 3, 4 and 5 by taking one step off 2, shooting a pair, take another step, shoot a pair, and keep going until you start to falter.

Walk back from where you came until you are breaking them solid again. Keep this up over a period of several weeks or months and you will conquer the doubles on 3, 4 and 5.

In trap how do you challenge yourself ?

Maybe you practice shooting one or two yards back from your usual yardage. Perhaps you try speeding up or slowing down from your usual rhythm. Finally, try taking a step off the post into the grass when shooting post 1 or 5, challenging yourself to break more extreme angles than you are used to.

Every article has some tidbit in it and John Bolger’s article targeted at senior shooters has several good ones. Don’t focus on how you miss targets, focus on how you hit them. This is process thinking at its best.

It’s not horrible to remind yourself how you miss certain targets but it’s better to remind yourself how to break them. Rather than shuffling through how you miss each presentation, shuffle through how to avoid these miscues before you even set up to shoot. Do all the things that prevent your misses and you don’t have to worry about missing.

occasionally to make sure you aren’t armswinging and are always swinging from the ankles up with the whole body. I see too many shooters throwing the gun at the target and leaning back to raise the gun up to the target. Ankles up is the way to swing.

And don’t neglect your visual setup during your Pre-shot routine. Sometimes we take it for granted but it is vital to good shooting. Make sure you follow your Pre-shot routine visual setups.

I always believed if you try to break each target as perfectly as you can you are building strength in your game. You also keep your conscious mind occupied with a pertinent task. By trying to break each target perfectly you stay centered on the process and you are constantly striving to make the perfect shot.

Being satisfied that it broke isn’t good enough if you really want to soar with the eagles. Know why you chipped your target and fix it. Hit it harder!

Physical conditioning is always an issue, especially as we mature (kind way of saying “getting old”). Lifting a 10 lb. dumbbell for 10 minutes each morning and evening will do wonders to your shooting stamina. I take one with me when I walk the dog. Something that parallels physical conditioning is following good fundamentals. Check yourself 9

Youth Program

Michael Pilch will be going to the U.S. Olympic camp in Colorado this summer. He is going to receive instruction in International Skeet. Michael was also Runner-Up at the SCTP State Trap Championionships at Silver Dollar in May. He was a member of the State Championship Varsity Skeet Team. Also of note is Nick Blenker making the Junior All-American Third Team and Joey Pinchin made Sub-Junior First Team All-American in Sporting Clays. Nick Blenker also won the SCTP State Skeet Championship the same weekend as Michael. Way to go guys!!!
