Club News Tumultuous month, July. We are through it and registered shooting is back. The Skeet and Sporting Clays shoots were cancelled but the Trap tournament was held. Eighteen shooters shot 3,400 targets.

Alex Riera and Gene Bryan led all shooters with 98’s in the Singles.

Reanna Frauens broke a 97 on her return from the SCTP Championships leading all Ladies in the Singles. Mary Norris and Gene Bryan led the Handicap with 94’s followed closely by Dax Demena with a 93. Alex Riera led the Doubles with a lone 92.

As you can see from pages 10 and 11 we had an exceptional month in our Youth Program. Many of our shooters did well at the SCTP National Championships.

We do some wonderful things at Markhan Skeet, Trap, and Sporting Clays.

The registered shoots are great but what we do with our Youth Program is really quite remarkable.

We have 12 years of teaching kids the fundamentals of shooting and many have gone on to State, Zone, and National prominence. I have enjoyed every minute of the experi-

ence and I think Steve Norris would agree. Thanks for all the support from the Club and County.

Congratulations to all of the kids who have benefitted from the program!

I would like to remind all of our shooters, if you have kids who need community service hours as part of their High School requirements they can get those hours by helping out at our shoots as trap help. We always need help at every tournament and those hours are greatly appreciated by our members. See me Joe Loitz for more information: 954-857-5278.

On a personal note, I will be getting my NSCA Level I teaching certification on at the Forest City Club in Savannah, GA this month, August 25-27. Steve Norris will be running the Trapshoot that weekend. Volunteers to help him will be greatly appreciated.

Again, as a coach in both our program and the Young Guns at Quail Creek I am so proud at how well our shooters have done. Take a minute and appreciate what these kids have done. It is truly quite remarkable! See you at the club!

Magazine Reviews TRAP & FIELD – 2017 July Here are five questions Bob Palmer thinks you should ask yourself as you head to the Grand. 1. Are you ready?

There is little you can do or should do to your game at this point. Trust in your game and stop tweaking it. 2.

Are you going to win? If you don’t have an energized, adrenaline charged feeling about this question you need to start visualizing yourself on the podium and achieving that adrenaline charged feeling of excitement at the prospect of competing. 3. What do you think about your opponents? Bob uses mind exercises to make your competition seem small and insignificant. Truth is, the target is your only opponent. Stick to the process and ignore the other shooters. 4. Do you love the Grand sightlines? There are some banks I don’t like to shoot but none of them should bother you.

Again, concentrate on the target and forget the background. 5. Who are your squadmates? I generally had good squads at the Grand, handpicked from shooters I shot with throughout the year. Roger Stinebring was post 1 and I shot 2. Frankie Hora shot post 3, Tony Marucco shot 4 or 5 and we filled in the last post with whoever was

known and available. Pick your squadmates wisely and unlike what Bob says, don’t compromise. Get the squad you want and never speed up or slow down your setup.

Magazine Review Shotgun Sports – 2017 August Michael J. Keyes, M.D. advises us qualified mentoring can get you further faster when you are working on becoming an expert. In shooting that translates to reaching the higher classifications: AA, AAA, or Master level. A qualified mentor can evaluate what you do and what you already know to eliminate wasted time and effort, shortening your learning curve. Additionally, mentoring provides real world advice, encouragement, and real-time feedback. Notice I said qualified mentoring. Be sure you get qualified advice that’s tailored to your needs not the whims of the mentor.

your comb level. Any slope to the comb means you must be very precise on where you place your face on it or you will change the POI. Dean likes to pattern his gun at 35 yards. When adjusting a stock make only one adjustment at a time, so you know what it is that improved your feel for the gun or your shooting. Thanks, Dean.

I don’t like reviewing my own articles, so I don’t. Neither do I like reviewing ones written by friends, but I will in this case. Dean Townsend has been a friend for close to 40 years and this month he submitted an article on setting up your shotgun for success.

This means setting the gun’s POI to shoot optimally for your style. He really doesn’t go into detail on what that should be other than to suggest the shotgun needs to shoot higher than you are looking if you are shooting trap.

Honestly, unless you know exactly what Dean is talking about you need an interpreter to explain the deeper meanings of his article. He gives too much info and not enough detail on the key points. I will review his good suggestions however. Remember with adjustable ribs, lowering the front end of the rib raises the POI. Keep 6

ger the pre-shot routine. You should too.

You want to have some adrenaline in your system when you shoot, just not too much! Here are some suggestions from John Shima to help cope with performance anxiety. Stay positive, don’t let the self-talk turn negative. Keep it positive. Relax. Tension interferes with fluid motion. Quiet your mind by concentrating on your breathing. It gives you an anchor point and something to occupy your conscious mind.

It gets a little crowded at this point. John tells us to visualize the shot and mentally rehearse it. I think he means for this to be the third to last thing you do before you call for the target. The second to last thing is to warn your Ego-Self to watch out for the target preparing you for the targets appearance. Finally, revisit the Quiet Eye, expanding your soft focus at your look point.

Skeet and Trap have very specific eye hold points. If you don’t know precisely what yours are you should discover them. They are more critical to your success than you might realize.

Let your mind wander between stations. Staying on alert throughout the round will wear yourself out mentally and physically. Concentrate when needed and relax when you can. The pre-shot routine is your cue to focus on the process of shooting. John suggests an almost self-hypnotic preamble to cue your shooting response. Lots of good shooters have a key word or phrase to trig-

Gil and Vicki Ash have a DVD “The Three Routines of Sporting Clays” that talks about the Pre-Shot, Post-Shot, and Correction Routines and in their article this month they discuss some of this. Here’s where a shooting log comes in handy. How far is too far to drive for a successful score at a shoot? I’ve had some great scores within a five-minute drive and have also posted good ones after driving two and a half hours. If you keep a shooting journal you would be able to correlate if driving distance affects your shooting. I prefer the five-minute drive.

You would also possibly be able to correlate whether eating before you shoot and/or whether what you eat has an impact on your shooting.

Gil and Vicki build routines around everything, from packing for the shoot to what foods to eat before an event. Can’t say I have that many routines but for big shoots I do make lists several days in advance so I can add to them. Creating and following good routines will certainly make your life less stressful.

Magazine Review thinking how they hate low 5. Todd suggests turning it around and stepping up to the station and saying, “I own low 5.”

I understand and so does he that this doesn’t guarantee success but it’s better than taking a negative approach. Personally, I would fix low 5. I just went through fixing low 5 and I was surprised how many variables low 5 possesses.

Thing is, only one component was at fault, my look point. Fixing the problem disconnects the mental problem.

There are so many aspects to the mental game you almost need a Ph.D. in psychology to understand it all. And if try to apply them all you may end up on a therapist’s couch. Todd Bender is a disciple of Lanny Bassham’s Mental Management program. This is a system designed to bolster your self-image, keeping you in the positive and away from negative self-talk and reflections. This is a psychological approach and certainly has great merit.

I think too many shooters keep problem targets in their inventory without getting help to fix them or without at least trying new approaches to the target. I still have a few I’m working on and I keep a positive attitude about them which is the point of the Mental Management program. Feed your self-image positive attitudes and you will be more confident and sometimes confidence is what gets you through a tough situation. Focus on the positive, on what you did right and drop any negativity.

Todd presents us with a situation where a shooter steps up to station 5 in skeet 8

Chandelles are either decelerating or accelerating. They are a target in constant transition which according to Clayton M. Rue means they are poor candidates for maintained-lead (sustained-lead). A chandelle is a flight path not a type of target although many times it’s thrown as a rabbit or battue to make it even more annoyingly difficult to read. That flight path is usually a target “launched on a relatively steep upward angle and travels in a parabolic path.” With this flight-path there is always a transition point or apex changing the target from a rapidly rising to rapidly dropping one.

I am not going to relate all the methods Clayton suggests for the chandelle but there are some rules. Take a straight path from the hold point to the break point.

This typically means holding inside the parabolic path and going straight to the break point you select. This keeps you under the target and keeps it in sight above your barrels. Don’t setup outside the flight-path.

There’s too much chance of having the target drop under your barrels. Finally, don’t track this target, use the intercept method, going straight to a break point is your best option against its varying speed. ___________________

the mental game will get you to the podium. You can read every book on mental mechanics you want, follow the disciplines of Lanny Bassham or Bob Palmer, and still come up lacking if you don’t apply them at the moment of truth. I agree with John Shima, the mental game for shooting is a process oriented mechanism.

John always suggests watching the target break. This really all boils down to applying the principles he set forth in the earlier article. Set up with your pre-shot routine, go through any visualization and repeat your pre-shot mantra then watch the target break. It’s a process oriented system built around the fundamentals of shooting a target, quieting the mind, and staying in the moment. Regulating your breathing can be the foundation that builds a timing into the pre-shot process and everything you do to prepare for the target. All the mental gamesmanship in the world won’t help you break a target when it comes time to pull or release the trigger if your fundamentals aren’t sound but a strong mental game doesn’t hurt. Read everything you can and choose what works for you is always the best advice.

The mechanics of shooting, stance, mount, gun fit, etc. are all important to breaking a target but once you have all those right only 9

Young Guns of Quail Creek 2017 SCTP NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS From July 8-15 over 125 teams of youth shooters competed at the Cardinal Center in Marengo, Ohio at the SCTP National Championships. This is one of the largest Youth shooting competitions in the world with over 2,200 particpants.

Sporting Clays: Varsity, Rookie, and Intermediate Entry. Their Intermediate Advanced team won the Silver Medal in their category and their two Junior Varsity teams finished 10th and 12th respectively.

The top South Florida shooters for Young Guns were Nick Blenker, Joey Pinchin, and Reanna Frauens. These shooters claimed top individual honors for their teams.

Volume 8 Issue 8 Young Guns at Quail Creek is a bi-monthly program with practices on Saturdays or Sundays starting in October and running through March.

Every fall Young Guns accepts over 100 students into their program. Students who elect to com-

Youth Program

The Young Guns of Quail Creek took home their share of trophies at the SCTP National Championships in July.

Many shooters in Young Guns got their start in our program or practice with us on a regular basis. Please join me in congratulating all of them on their achievements. See pages 10 and 11 for a full breakdown of their achievements. Gene Bryan was also successful at the ATA Southern Zone shoot. He took home 3rd place Junior with a 199!

Michael Pilch who placed 10th in the nation in Doubles Trap at the SCTP event will be going to Colorado this month to attend an Olympic Team camp on International Skeet. Have fun Michael and Congrats to all of you!
