FRO M TH E PASTO R CH RIS G E ORGE - PASTOR Summer is over. School is starting. Sunday, August 6 is our Kick-Off Sunday!

I can still tell you my kindergarten teacher’s name. Ms. Lantz. I walked into her classroom at Claymont Elementary School in St. Louis as an out of control little five-year old boy. She was a lady who loved me, even when I was less than lovable. She worked patiently with me to learn my letters and numbers. She taught me how to tie my shoe and to remember my home address. She said things like, “Share everything. Play fair. Don’t hurt people. Say you are sorry.”

I can still tell you the name of many of my Sunday School teachers. Mr. Lackey. Mr. Hopper. Ms. Royer. Ms. Farley.

These men and woman inspired me and taught me about God’s love and grace. When I did wrong, they helped me understand God would make things right. They helped me to memorize scripture verses and learn the difference between good and evil. I asked them LOTS of questions. They didn’t always know the answers, but they never made me feel guilty for asking. Over and over, they told me, “God loves you and has a special plan for you.”

People may finish and graduate from high school and college, but we should never stop learning. Spiritually speaking, God has called us to be “disciples” which is an ongoing process of growing and stretching our minds as we seek and understand God’s truth.

At Smoke Rise, we believe that making disciples is the business of the church. We are called to do more than merely attend and observe, more than being present. We are meant to participate. We are encouraged to engage in study, to ask questions, and to be a part of a community of believers who follow in the footsteps of Jesus.

Summer is over. And, perhaps, this August all of us should go back to school. Some may have been out of Sunday School for a few months or a few years. Why not visit a class this Fall? Others may be in a class, but not attend regularly. You may not think it matters if you attend or not. But, it matters. The community is stronger when everyone is contributing. Your presence makes the experience richer for everyone. Why not renew your commitment? Adults, youth, and children need to feed and to be fed spiritual. So come…Sunday mornings for Sunday School, Wednesday nights for Journeys.

At Smoke Rise, you will find what I found so long ago in Ms. Lantz’s classroom. You will find people who are patient and kind, loving and caring. In short, you will find community in the very best sense of the word.

I want you to know, “God loves you and has a special plan for you.”

Connections is a once a month gathering of people sharing a life stage. We meet on 4th Sunday evenings at a host home to learn through bible study and life conversations and for fellowship with each other.

CON N EC T I N G AT SMOK E R I SE If you are at Smoke Rise on most nights of the week, you will hear the squeaking of shoes and balls being dribbled, shot, and passed in the gym. The young men and women that you see and hear in the gym are part of the Ballin Blazers.

Ballin Blazers is a basketball organization that makes its primary home at Smoke Rise Baptist Church. They manage our basketball league during the winter and then have AAU teams playing throughout the Spring, Summer, and Fall.

The Ballin Blazers aren’t only about basketball. The Ballin Blazers strive “to provide a safe and productive environment that enables children to learn and apply the principles of teamwork, discipline, dedication, and sportsmanship.

We facilitate the development of strength and character in every child that participates. We also strive to provide a service to our community by providing a healthy outlet for children, opportunities for the community to gather together, and endless hours of entertainment.”

As part of this “more than basketball” mentality, the Ballin Blazers choose a local community project during each quarter of the year. During the summer quarter, the Ballin Blazers gave back to Smoke Rise and painted the gym.

The next time you are at Smoke Rise on a weeknight, stop by the gym and check out what is going on in the gym because it is more than just squeaking of shoes and dribbling of basketballs.

GEN ER OS I T Y SU M M A RY O F G I VIN G TO DATE Thank you for your continued generosity. Giving was up against recent historical trends through the first fiscal quarter. Although giving is generally lower during the summer, we usually catch up as normal schedules return.

The Finance Committee is grateful for the continued faithfulness of so many and especially for those who are making regular, recurring gifts to the church.

The Finance Committee continues to review expenses and spending in order to find ways to save. With the exception of a few line items where we spent more than expected through the year to date, our spending remains in budget and is on track to meet budget across most categories. As we finish summer and move into a new season of Wednesday activities and worship in a renewed sanctuary, let us continue to give generously and cheerfully to our church.

CAR IN G AT S M O KE R I SE TH E P R AC T I C E OF PRAYER FO R CA R I N G MI N ISTRY Prayer for those who are hurting or facing difficult times can be an intimidating prospect for many people. The first disciples recognized that prayer takes practice and asked Jesus to help them. Jesus responded to their request by giving the disciples a model prayer. In our shared calling to caring ministry, The Lord’s Prayer is one of several model prayers that can help us with the practice of prayer.

Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed by Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory, forever.

Amen.

“Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed is your name.”

Through prayer, we can speak personally and intimately to God. Jesus taught us to pray to “our Father” and not just “my father.” The model prayer invites “us” to pray as a united people. It is perfectly fine to pray in the first person: “God, I pray to you.” And yet, The Lord’s Prayer invites us to pray together, recognizing that we are called to share each other’s burdens and cares: “God, we pray to you.”

“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” These words invite God to reign over and among us in the present. Through prayer, we open ourselves to God’s nearness and ready help.

tomorrow may not come, the value of today seems all the more significant. Do not hesitate to lead others who are hurting by praying for God’s daily provision.

“Forgive our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” Guilt, regret, and fear are hard burdens to carry under any circumstance. As followers of a forgiving God, we should not hesitate to lead others to seek God’s mercy. When we pray for forgiveness with others, we can experience together a deep sense of God’s sure and abiding grace.

“Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”

This phrase presumes that we will all face circumstances that can be difficult to endure. It is okay to admit our vulnerability and our need for God to strengthen our faith when it is hard to keep going. This is a prayer for resolve, and it presumes that God is able to provide the resources we need to overcome.

“For yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever.”

These last words of the Lord’s Prayer are a “doxology.”

A doxology is an affirmative benediction or closing to a prayer. When we pray with others as caring ministers of Christ’s love, we should not hesitate to close our prayers with affirmative words of thanksgiving and praise.

You don’t have to find the perfect words to pray. If you are willing to learn and make prayer a daily practice, you can discover the joy and power of prayer as a caring ministry for others. Are you ready and willing to set aside time to learn to pray? May God’s Spirit bless you in your daily practice of prayer and grant you the blessing of caring for others by praying for others.

SERVIN G ON M I S S I ON JE S U S F OU ND AS LEEP IN B ROOKLYN PARK “Wake up, Jesus! Wake Up!” It was Bible story time under a shady tree in the Park in Brooklyn, New York, and the kids were taking turns playing Jesus asleep on the boat in the middle of a storm. “Wake up, Jesus!” they shouted as they pretended to be frantic disciples. “The kids enjoyed acting out this and other Bible stories all week,” said Rev. Bart McNiel, who was in charge of the Bible Story station in Brooklyn each day. The children playing Jesus were told to remain sound asleep and to wake up only after the disciples shook them by the shoulders and shouted. After a lot of laughter, the children would scream, “Wake up, Jesus!”

And then Jesus would sit up and say, “Peace, be still!” Then the kids would play a “freeze” game where Rev. McNiel would say, “Peace, be still” as the signal to freeze in place.

As the Bible Story time came to a close with one group, the children sat in a circle to talk about the ways that they can find peace in the middle of scary situations. In one group, a child raised her hand and said, “Did Jesus use a pillow on the boat? Do you think that Jesus ever hit his pillow when he was upset?” Rev. McNiel paused a few seconds and said, “Yes, I think Jesus might have done something like that.

What do you think?” The child shrugged her shoulders, “It helps me feel better sometimes to hit my pillow, and next time I hit my pillow I am going to also say, ‘Peace Be Still.’ I like those words.” Reflecting on that moment, Rev. McNiel said, “It is one thing to read scripture, but it is another thing for scripture to find its way into our heart. In my mind I

said a little prayer for that little girl to do just as she said she would—for her to remember the words ‘Peace Be Still’ next time she felt like she needed to hit her pillow.”

LIGHT IN T HE DARKNE SS Smoke Rise has had a relationship with Cornerstone Church in Snellville for several years. Recently 7 laymen from Smoke Rise had an opportunity to assist this small congregation with a lighting problem. They worked all day: climbing on scaffolding, pulling out old light fixtures, dodging falling insulation, enduring hot temperatures, and taking down a wall in the basement.

As Pam Durso said, “Too often I forget how much good there is in this world – that there are people who give so freely of themselves, who share so readily of their talents, and who love each other and laugh together so easily. So here’s to you: Bill Blanton, Page Fulgham, Jim Huston, Bob Jernigan, Bob Knell, Jim Myrick, and Cliff Mueller. Thank you for sharing your Thursday with Cornerstone and with me. Thank you for reminding me that ministry giftedness comes in many, many shapes and sizes and sometimes is accompanied by a hammer. Thank you for showing me that kindness is always close by. Thank you for caring about my church and our congregation. Thank you for bringing light into our darkness!”

GR AC I AS - T I J UAN A M EX ICO “Why do we even bother painting these shacks?” a mission team member asked. The “houses” in the barrios of Tijuana are built from whatever wood product they can find in the garbage dump. It may be a discarded pallet or a scrap of plywood or the end of a wire spool. The roof is usually tarp or a discarded billboard sign. “Wouldn’t it be better to just tear this down and go to Home Depot and buy plywood and 2x4s and rebuild the whole thing?” the team member added. As we continued to paint, three boys from the house were playing together in the court yard. We asked them if they wanted to help paint their house. Both parents were gone and they jumped at the chance to learn a new activity. It seemed that they had never painted before. But we patiently helped them and they quickly made a game of it, competing for the one roller and brush available to them. They worked hard and stayed with the project until the entire house was painted. As we were about to leave our Mexican group leader said one of the boys had something to tell us. Our group gathered around the freshly painted door and the youngest boy came running up to us with paint on his hands and arms. He threw his arms out as wide as he could and with a smile just as wide exclaimed, “GRACIAS!” These families do the best they can with the resources they have. A coat of paint will not change their living conditions, but the love we showed to those boys that day

will be remembered. The boys took pride in the job they did and their “house” looked better. We built a relationship with them and showed them God cares about them. This story highlights the reason we go on mission trips - to build relationships with people of other cultures by working along side them and showing them the love of Christ.

I can imagine their mother coming home to her freshly painted house and her three boys proudly telling her they did the painting. I can see her hugging them in gratitude and joy. She may not have been as happy with the paint on their clothes.

FAMILY M I N I ST RY AT SMOK E R I SE NEW SA F E T Y P OLICY Beginning September 1, Smoke Rise will roll out the official Safety policy. It has been written by the Safety Plan Team that was created and formed by the Children’s Committee and the Risk Management Committee. The policy will be approved by the Children’s Committee and presented to the deacons and administrative Council at their August meetings.

Our new policy is one more step that we are taking at Smoke Rise Baptist Church to keep the most vulnerable in our community safe. Other efforts to keep our children, teens, and friends with special needs safe have been to create a new suite for our children to worship, learn, and play as well as to build a playground that is open and welcoming to individuals of all abilities.

In addition, September 8-10, we will be hosting a Sexuality Education, Safety, and Parenting Seminar for parents, grandparents, and educators as part of our goal to equip our entire community with information and tools to protect the most vulnerable among us.
