MESSAGE FROM THE NMO PRESIDENT OF SMMAMS MALAYSIA
Dear IFMSA Asia-Pacific Family
,
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to APRM 2022 Malaysia! It is a great honour to be able to host the APRM again, exactly ten years after APRM 2012 that was held in Penang, Malaysia
Our chosen theme for this year “Together, Reimagining Global Health Security” aims to reinvent how we view global health security and build back with better, more resilient health systems.
This is especially important now as we move into the post-pandemic era to address and find solutions to the gaps that the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed The world has undergone unrecognisable change over the past two years and we cannot afford to be caught unaware again I hope that APRM 2022 will provide a platform for highly motivated individuals such as yourself to assemble, exchange ideas and come up with innovative solutions to safeguard the future of healthcare together.
This APRM would also mark the first physical meeting of the Asia-Pacific region since the pandemic began. APRM has always been a celebration of the IFMSA Asia-Pacific region - its accomplishments, its NMOs and most important of all, its diversity. This APRM is especially special to me, as both the General Assistant for Asia-Pacific and NMO President, to be able to welcome aspiring members from across the region to my home, Malaysia, and reinvigorate the spirit of our Regional Meeting. I hope that you will find APRM 2022 an illuminating experience and inspire you with what medical students are capable of achieving
Our Organising Committee has worked tirelessly over the past few months, overcoming the adversities of preparing for a conference in the middle of a pandemic, to bring to you the best possible and unforgettable experience I truly hope that you will thoroughly enjoy this APRM and see what we, and IFMSA, has to offer Once again, I welcome all of you and hope to see you very soon in Kuala Lumpur! Selamat datang ke Malaysia!
Best regards,
Shi

Dear IFMSA Asia-Pacific Family
,
It is of my utmost pleasure as the Regional Director for Asia-Pacific to invite you all to the Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting (APRM) 2022 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
APRM is customarily celebrated as the culmination of our region’ s work and achievements as it occurs near the end of the term But for many members, like me, it was the beginning of an unforgettable adventure It was a space where medical students could create ideas, inspire each other, and shape the future of our own health systems and communities
Although held in an unfamiliar city, my level of familiarity rose with every person I met and interacted with It was a space that we could all call our home
And after two years of having two consecutive fully-online APRMs, we will be coming home again, together as a family to this year ’ s APRM With our theme “Together, Reimagining Global Health Security, ” we want to highlight the importance of resilient health systems for us, as a region, to move forward to a better normal and to create a positive impact as future medical professionals of our communities.
Our amazing organizing committee has been tirelessly working with our regional team to give everyone a memorable and impactful regional meeting. We are preparing sessions that aim to capacitate and spaces where you can showcase your work and inspire fellow medical students in the region. We at AP, work hard but we also party harder! We will also be arranging social programs where everyone can share their culture while staying safe with adequate health protocols in place
Come join us as we come back home to APRM See you all soon in Kuala Lumpur!

APRM 2022 MALAYSIA INVITATION PACKAGE 19
Health Security:
Together, Reimagining Global Health Security
The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines global public health security as “the activities required, both proactive and reactive, to minimise the danger and impact of acute public health events that endanger people’ s health across geographical regions and international boundaries. ” Public health emergencies such as infectious disease outbreaks, natural hazards, antimicrobial resistance and more health crises threaten and disrupt global health and economy
The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed and widened the gaps in many healthcare systems worldwide. Despite the emergence of new SARS-COV2 variants, countries are gradually adapting to the new normal So the next question will be:
In 2020, the Director-General of WHO, Dr Tedros Adhanom Gherbreyesus, called for investment in advancing health security and preparing for future pandemics in the released news titled: "The best time to prevent the next pandemic is now: countries join voices for better emergency.”
“Do we continue to focus on potential crisis management or do we adopt a lackadaisical approach despite the significant disruption to the society and economy?”
APRM 2022 MALAYSIA INVITATION PACKAGE 21
Preparedness for future pandemics or health emergencies must start now. The Asia-Pacific region is one of the most vulnerable regions due to structural and geographical factors Hence, it is essential to discuss the theme of health security, “Together, Reimagining Global Health Security” in this region Adequate preparedness, especially prevention, detection and response, is imperative to strengthen our health systems and promote the sustainability, efficiency and effectiveness of a country’ s preparedness in unprecedented events in the future.
Foresight is a discipline that allows us to identify the potential “ new futures” that may or may not appear from our current vantage points and their implications. The Global Health Foresight function, established by the WHO Science Division, aimed to develop future thinking and draw valuable insights to build on future proof responses. Foresight will be incorporated into our activities to allow delegates to grasp how the concept is utilised to envision the “ new futures” of health security globally and in our region as well as the corresponding responses
Besides the “whole of government approach” , the “whole of society approach” has been strongly advocated and emphasised in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic Different stakeholders from the local, national, and international levels must be in the dialogue to develop inclusive,
So, what is the next crisis? Are we ready for it?

PROFFESIONAL AND RESEARCH EXCHANGE TRAINING (PRET)
PRET is of great importance to keep improving our Exchange program and maintaining it in high quality. To build skills, capacity building is one of the most important pillars for IFMSA. It helps trainees improve their skills and job performance It helps Officers in becoming experts on exchanges AsiaPacific happens to be struggling with challenges in exchanges, lack of motivation, communication issues, poor handover, lack of recognition of exchanges by universities, lack of marketing in exchanges, lack of experience among NEOs and NOREs, a lack of engagement with SCOPE and SCORE initiatives and a lack of implementation of Global Health and Research education. All in all, the reason can be attributed to the lack of events for capacity building for exchanges in the region It is important for building member capacity in Professional and Research Exchanges, this workshop aims to improve exchanges within our AP NMOs The workshop will be planned to address the gaps in our AP exchanges.
Universal health coverage (UHC) is central to better health and well-being for all and is crucial for achieving the goals set as per the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development The spread of the COVID19 pandemic across the Asia-Pacific Region has exposed the gaps and deficiencies in the region’ s health systems and the interdependence between health security and economic stability. IFMSA has already been working on UHC for a few years now, and the cross-cutting nature of this issue makes tackling UHC an intersectoral and interdisciplinary effort. Since External Affairs in the AP region is still at its infancy and highlighted by NMOs in the AsiaPacific Regional Meeting (APRM 2022) Priorities survey [with External Affairs and Advocacy ranking #3 in the survey]; we believe by setting this as one of the PreAPRM workshops we can further highlight addressing UHC in the region and capacitate the participants with external affairs related skills.
