MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear SMLS Community,

Within this report, you will find many examples of how your generous contributions are positively supporting the important work we set out to achieve everyday on behalf of our Millies. At SMLS, we take enormous pride in our ability to offer an educational experience which no other school can provide - a rich, robust, girl-empowered, personalized education. Through our specialized teaching, academic offerings, and unique Signature Programs, we are encouraging today’s young women to be creative; we are daring them to see things in new ways; and, we are challenging them to find unique approaches to problem-solving.

We are empowering young women to challenge and transform the world, and we do it all with the incredible support of our community. Thanks to your ongoing support of our mission and vision, we continue to seek out progressive new learning opportunities for our students, enhance our facilities, and are forever innovating and evolving to meet the needs of our students and the school.

I extend a warm and hearty thank you to every one of SMLS’s devoted supporters. You are an inspiration to all of us at SMLS. Your belief in the endless potential of our school gives our girls endless opportunities for the future. I hope you enjoy reading our 2021-22 Gratitude Report and have an opportunity to reflect on just how meaningful your contributions have been.

Thank you so very much for your support, your dedication and your optimism for our students and the leaders of tomorrow. I can promise you that our Millies will make you proud.

With gratitude,

NANCY RICHARDS

MESSAGE FROM CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS

Dear Friends and Supporters of SMLS,

We are immensely fortunate at St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School to be a part of such an inspiring community. Throughout my time as Chair of the Board of Governors, I have consistently been awed and inspired by the ongoing evidence that shows just how strong our community is - from every consultation, every meeting, and every donation, the comments we receive always center around the strength of our community.

It is this sense of community that drives us and will continue to propel us towards new heights for every Millie and the future of our school. With the launch of Aspire 2029, the School’s new strategic plan; the leadership of our Head of School, a dedicated Senior Leadership Team, Faculty, and Staff; and the generous support of you, our donors, there is truly no limit to what our school and what our students can accomplish.

Just as we implore every Millie to aspire to greatness, believing that nothing can limit the pursuit of her individual dreams, Aspire 2029 charts the path we’ll take over the next few years to ensure that each student at SMLS receives an exceptional education and that the school is well-positioned to be the goldstandard for girls’ education.

Your support fuels our ambition and our collective aspirations. And it is your support that is helping us achieve our mission to engage each girl in a personalized, real-world learning experience - one where she can explore her own unique pathways within a warm and nurturing community. You make it possible for us to dream big, to do more and to continue unlocking the potential of our students and our school - and for that, we are extremely grateful.

The SMLS Board of Governors celebrates your generosity and the impact that your thoughtfulness has on each and every student at SMLS. We sincerely thank you for your unwavering support; it means so much to so many.

Yours truly,

Gary Skene, P‘18, ‘29, Chair, SMLS Board of Governors

MESSAGE FROM CHAIR OF THE ADVANCEMENT COMMITTEE

It is a pleasure to serve on the SMLS Board of Governors and as the Chair of the Advancement Committee.

During the 2021-22 school year, I witnessed countless examples of generosity from the members of our school community. It served as a reminder to me of the gratitude I feel for being a part of the SMLS community, and solidified my commitment to give back.

As I moved into my role as Chair of the Advancement Committee this past year, I was surprised to learn that while tuition covers the cost of fundamental school operations, it is the generosity of giving through charitable gifts that provide the much-needed support for new facilities, enhancements to our Signature Programs and additional funds for student financial assistance. We are truly proud of the rich heritage of generosity that has existed at SMLS for decades, in support of our daughters’ educational experience.

All of the programs and facilities on campus that our girls benefit from each and every day are the direct result of the generosity of current and past parents, alumnae, grandparents, staff, faculty and friends. They have supported the School to ensure we can evolve with the changing needs of a future SMLS education. I feel deeply that it is the responsibility of every generation of SMLS families to do the same, and support the School for current and future girls who will challenge and transform the world.

Despite the uncertainty of the COVID-19 global pandemic that has impacted all of us since 2020, our community showed an outstanding philanthropic commitment to our School. The Millie Fund exceeded its $350,000 fundraising goal, raising $374,210 in 2021-22. At this time, the majority of our major gift and annual fund donations are directed towards needs-based student financial assistance, our Signature Programs, and the Head’s Initiatives Fund to support the emerging priorities of the School. We are grateful to all of our donors for their thoughtful and ongoing support of this school that means so much to all of us.

I am so very proud to be part of the SMLS community, which year after year continues to inspire us all with its generosity, encouragement, commitment and passion for the School’s mission. I thank each and every member in our shared community for their efforts and commitment over the last year.

Sincerely,

VALERIE TEREJKO

MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS

SMLS is a special place, and one of the reasons for that is the generous people who make up our school community. From our incredible students, their parents and grandparents, our parent and alumnae associations, staff, faculty, friends, and our Board of Governors, it is the support of our community that makes all the difference to our success.

Through volunteerism, philanthropy, stewardship and strong alumnae and parent relationships, our goal in the Advancement and Community Relations office is to develop understanding and engagement among our various constituents to strengthen and grow our curricular and co-curricular programs, and ensure the financial support and enthusiasm required to fulfill the school’s mission and strategic plan.

This report accounts for gifts made from July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022. As always, we sincerely thank each and every donor who made a financial contribution to the School during this period. Your philanthropic support allows us to be a better institution, participation makes a huge difference, and we are very grateful for your support.

IMPACT STORIES

STEM AND ROBOTICS

Every day, our students’ experience is enhanced thanks to your donations to SMLS. Here are a few examples of your gifts in action during the 2021-22 school year:

Our Grade 1 classes are learning coding through KIBO Robots. They create a sequence, scan the code using the robot, then watch as the robot performs the code they created - all while enhancing their collaboration and communication skills.

ACTIVE HEALTHY LIVING

We continue to see the impact of professional coaching for our Spartan athletes through their individual growth, their success at competitions and tournaments, and the pride that is felt throughout the community for our teams, athletes and school.

GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP

As our students engage with the natural world beyond the pillars of SMLS, their experience is even better thanks to our new dry bags which keep their belongings clean and dry during excursions. New walkie talkies enable communication between staff members at all times and in all landscapes. Our GO Pro camera allows us to capture these cherished and lifelong memories for our students. Thanks to our generous community, there are bursaries available to help make some of these lifechanging experiences possible.

CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY

Our students have access to modern technology, including RevTouch Interactive Displays, Kurzweil Assistive Technology, large format printer and document cameras.

AROUND CAMPUS

Our youngest Millies are enjoying new resources in the Wonder Garden which include a mud kitchen, sensory tables, a natural tree stump seating area, a double seater tricycle, and magnet wall. The magnet wall teaches students STEM principles as they use magnetic parts to create designs and configurations to explore angles, speeds and distances by sending objects such as water, sand or balls through their configuration. Thanks to the SMLS Parent Association, we are all enjoying our beautiful new outdoor seating around campus, and our new school podium.

STUDENT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Your gifts give our students the greatest gift of all - an education that lays the groundwork for their development and success, and the opportunity to reach their full potential - regardless of their financial background.

MEET OUR DONORS

THE TICE FAMILY

The Arts and Design Signature Program at SMLS has a special place in the hearts of the Tice family. While each of their three daughters, Charlotte ‘19, Isabelle ‘21 and Sophia ‘24 have had different experiences and interests within the umbrella of the program, Arts and Design has had a significant impact for all of them.

“The program offered my girls opportunities that pushed them out of their comfort zones. I saw their confidence increase, as well as their willingness to try new things. Kids need to realize the benefits of the arts, and all the ways in which they can draw on those skills in all areas of their personal and professional lives,” said Anne-Marie Tice ‘90.

“Students today have a tendency towards traditional fields of study like

business or science. But the world needs all sorts of people. No matter which path your child is interested in, the skills learned through the Arts and Design program are valuable and transferable in so many ways. There’s a safe space in Arts classes that allow students to explore and experience new things and realize potential inside themselves that they may never have otherwise realized. And, it provides the perfect outlet and balance in the midst of other classes such as AP Chemistry and Calculus.”

As one of SMLS’ Signature Programs, families have the opportunity to direct their donations to support the Arts and Design program. “We were shocked to learn that very few families choose to allocate their philanthropic support directly to the Arts. Through investing in the Arts and Design program, we

hope that more students will be excited to pursue the arts, and in turn, more families in the SMLS community will be inspired to give to this fantastic program, its impressive drama productions and its incredible faculty, namely Mr. Tim Pace.”

“From Arts and Design, to Global Citizenship, to Professional Internship, SMLS’s Signature Programs gave my daughters incredible experiences that shaped their character and prepared them beautifully for their journey after graduation. I believe we made the absolute best choice for our girls.”

MEET OUR DONORS

AMY HOLLAND ‘89

Amy Holland and her family are very familiar with the independent school environment. “My grandmother, father, three brothers and myself all attended independent schools. My parents were educators themselves, and knew from experience how important it is to have exposure to the bigger world, and especially people from all walks of life.”

Amy Holland ‘89

DONNA COSSITT

Amy came to SMLS in Grade 3, and still cherishes the community she found here. “SMLS provided me with a stable environment, gave me a sense of connectedness, kept me grounded and gave me an extended family.” Amy’s best friends remain those that she met at SMLS, including one whom she met on her very first day. “There’s a level of comfort and familiarity in those friendships that cannot be matched. They’ve gone through everything with you, so they know exactly who I am, even all these years later.”

Amy is proud to see the growth of SMLS today. “The breadth of opportunity here allows girls to find their niche. I remember we always had incredible guest speakers, and I would think, ‘If the person standing in front of me could do that, what could I do?’ They inspired me to work hard towards my current and future goals. It was visionary.”

For the past twenty years, Amy has been a strong supporter of our Student Financial Assistance program. “My education at SMLS set me on a path with high expectations of myself, and gave me the confidence to pursue whatever I wanted, without limitation. That was one of the greatest gifts I was given. I donate to help give another girl that same gift.”

For the past 36 years, Donna Cossitt has warmly welcomed every family and student to the SMLS community. Donna is our Community Liaison, and a passionate believer in the value of an all-girls education.

Not only does Donna work tirelessly to extend the warmth of the SMLS community to our newest families, she also supports the school financially. “I’m putting my money back into this institution because I believe in SMLS and what it does for girls.”

Donna directs her support towards Student Financial Assistance, and bettering our facilities. “The better the facilities, the more it attracts families to our great school. And, our bursary

program gives girls the chance to come to SMLS that wouldn’t normally have that chance, and that makes me feel good.”

One of the most satisfying aspects of her job is watching the girls grow each year and graduate as poised, accomplished young women. Given the length of her tenure at the school, Donna has had the added thrill of seeing graduates return to enroll their own children at SMLS.

When asked her hope for the future of SMLS, Donna says, “I hope that everyone gives, because if everyone contributes what they can, when you put that all together, it’s really something!”
