MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL As I write this message of gratitude to the many members of our community who financially supported SMLS last year, I must also thank our entire community for the unwavering support we have received while adjusting to the challenges of COVID-19.

Although back to school has been an adjustment for everyone, our Millies continue to thrive and create meaningful ways to connect and expand their learning.

THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO FOR A CHILD IS TO GIVE THEM THE BEST EDUCATION POSSIBLE

It is that belief that led Robert Bell and Esther Falconer Bell, grandparents of Grade 4 student Isla Elbe, to donate $100,000 to SMLS. Their gift will establish the Robert Bell and Isla Elbe ’29 Bursary that will provide a girl of promise with an SMLS education that her family may not otherwise be able to afford.

It is this opportunity to reach one’s full potential that they wish to provide for more girls. “We’ve seen Isla grow into a confident young girl since starting at SMLS.” They hope that their leadership gift to SMLS inspires other families to support the school in any way they can. “We want to provide deserving girls with the access to an enriched education that lays the groundwork for their development and success - regardless of their financial background.”

Doug and I personally support the SMLS Bursary Fund through a monthly deduction from my pay cheque, because we want to provide exceptional girls with access to the amazing and powerful opportunities that SMLS provides.

As the Director of the Learning Strategies Program, I have experienced the possibilities that open up because of the generosity of our community. We have been able to resource the Student Success Centre with reading programs, assistive technology hardware and software, manipulatives and even flexible furniture to facilitate learning in this multi-purpose, busy room. Our program is enhanced and as a result so is the work we can do with students, families and faculty. It is all made possible through the generosity of spirit of our SMLS community.

WE BELIEVE THAT THE SCHOOL HAS ADAPTED WELL TO THE CHANGING WORLD BY CONTINUING TO EMPOWER YOUNG WOMEN TO SUCCEED. WE WANT TO HELP MORE GIRLS REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL

The mother-daughter SMLS alumnae duo of Kim BARRETT McKenna ’84 and Carli McKenna ’20 have been reflecting on the world in which they find themselves and are truly grateful for the opportunities they have been given throughout their lives. They believe that giving provides a way for them to express what they truly care about and, in turn, pay it forward.

In recognition of Carli’s graduation last May, The Barrett McKenna Legacy Fund was established to help daughters of alumnae have the same opportunity that they both had as SMLS students. They challenged members of the SMLS community to support the fund and are currently matching all gifts, dollar for dollar, up to $100,000.
