2023–2024 Gratitude Report

“At SMLS, we are curating experiences in our classrooms, on the
playing field, at the podium and in the community, that
engage and challenge our students.”
To Our SMLS Community,
The women who founded SMLS in 1891 were trailblazers with the vision, strength and perseverance to establish a girls’ school at a time when educating women was largely considered unnecessary. Today, we continue to build on their legacy drawing on a profound understanding of how girls learn.
At SMLS, we are curating experiences in our classrooms, on the playing field, at the podium and in the community, that engage and challenge our students. Anchored in a nurturing community of exceptionally committed educators and supportive peers, SMLS is where girls go to create the best versions of themselves.
A sense of belonging starts early at SMLS. Friendships ignite quickly and mentoring happens naturally, and this sense of connection and belonging is further bolstered by our broader community where the generous gifts of time, friendship, and financial contributions directly support current and future Millies, creating very special opportunities for them to find and pursue their life’s passions.
With this Gratitude Report, it is our pleasure to share concrete examples of your support at work. Your generosity continues to provide our students with opportunities to work with innovative tools, apply their newly acquired skills to contexts outside of the classroom and immerse themselves in real-world contexts. Truly, you are helping SMLS students to innovate, grow their curiosities, challenge the world in which they live, and develop determined persistence: the attributes that ensure their education will help them own their future.
SMLS remains a mission-focused school, and our dedication to academic excellence that engages each girl in a personalized learning experience is at the forefront of all that we do. Guiding this work is the passionate leadership of the SMLS Board of Governors, and I would like to especially thank Ms. Victoria Hughes ‘01, an SMLS alumna, current parent and Board Chair for her dedication and role modeling for our community of young women.
Thanks to our skilled Board of Governors, dedicated parents, talented and committed employees, impressive alumnae, loving friends of the school, and, most importantly, our inquisitive and inspiring students, an SMLS education is one that helps girls own their future. Simply put, we could not do what we do without you. Thank you.
With gratitude,
Catherine BARRY Hant ‘89 Head of School
At St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School, we are not just a school with girls—we are a school for girls. We are shaping futureready, forward-thinking leaders, creators, and changemakers. The impact of an all-girls education is profound: it instills confidence, encourages bold thinking, and fosters the resilience needed to thrive in today’s rapidly evolving world. When we invest in the education of girls, we invest in a future filled with boundless potential and it is inspiring to see what our students go on to build using their time at SMLS as their foundation.
We are fortunate to be part of such a supportive community that champions girls’ education and recognizes its transformative power. Your generosity is helping to create a school, a faculty, and a community that is excited and prepared to meet the challenges of tomorrow. Every donation enables our girls to access cutting-edge tools, resources, and experiences that help them grow into confident, engaged, and empowered young women.
The SMLS Board of Governors celebrates your generosity and is committed to ensuring that every contribution is directed to areas of the school that provide maximum impact for each and every student. Our unique structure as three distinct divisions—Junior, Middle, and Senior Schools —under one roof, allows us to focus holistically on every stage of our girls’ development. This interconnectedness allows your donations to make an even greater difference, supporting each student’s journey from curiosity to leadership and providing our faculty with the resources to innovate and inspire.
“The
impact of an all-girls education is profound: it
instills confidence, encourages bold thinking, and fosters the resilience needed to thrive in today’s rapidly evolving world.”
I encourage you, if you haven’t already, to join us in this mission. To those who have already given, thank you There is no better investment than the future of these remarkable young women. Together, we can ensure that SMLS continues to be a place where girls are inspired, challenged, and empowered to own their future.
Thank you for being part of this important journey.
Sincerely,

The SMLS Parent Association embodies the generous spirit and dedication that define our community. As a group of parent volunteers, our mission is clear: to foster a connected, vibrant, and inclusive community while raising essential funds that enhance the educational experience at SMLS. This past year, we made significant strides in creating a more welcoming environment and rebuilding a sense of togetherness. Through countless volunteer hours and a shared vision with the school, we’ve made a lasting, tangible contribution to the experience for current Millies and to the future of SMLS.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to the parents, faculty, staff, and wider community whose time, energy, and creativity have helped strengthen the bonds between us all. Your contributions have not only enhanced the resources available to SMLS students but have also nurtured a deeper sense of belonging across our school. Together, we look forward to continuing this meaningful journey, building on the values of collaboration, inclusion, and shared purpose.
In 2023–24, the Parent Association donated $68,000 to fund projects across the school, including:
• Individual, wallmounted and rolling whiteboards for Junior and Middle School
• Dining Hall audio upgrade
• Science and technology equipment for Senior School
• Head of School Speaker Series
• School Closing Ceremonies
• Tower Gardens for Junior School

We thank these and the countless parent volunteers who generously contributed to SMLS through the Parent Association’s activities.
When I meet SMLS alumnae, the conversation generally gravitates to a couple of topics—fond memories of time at school, particularly how the school influenced their lives; and a curiosity about what the school is like today, how it has changed and what remains the same. These ideas are also the heart of why so many alumnae choose to give back to the school whether in volunteer time or financially. We are motivated to give today’s girls the same benefits of the experience that we enjoyed. And, we have such pride in our school that we want to foster its excellence for future generations.
The two primary purposes of the Alumnae Association are to foster a sense of community among alumnae and to promote and encourage a continuing interest in the school. The Executive Committee with whom I have the pleasure of serving, invest countless hours in these objectives. We organize events and fundraisers throughout the year—our Alumnae Wear collection, the annual Holiday Wreath sales, Reindeer Games at Millie Christmas, pub nights, and the reunion weekend events. Through our fundraising efforts, we were able to contribute $4,000 back to the school—$2,500 to the Alumnae Bursary Fund and $1,500 to the SoundPortrait project. Many thanks to everyone who donated, made a purchase or attended an event to make this possible.

We wish to thank the families of the Class of 2024 for collectively raising $36,963.29 to establish the Class of 2024 Bursary Fund. This fund will help more girls experience, and benefit from, an SMLS education and is a lasting legacy to our 2024 graduates.

“The three of us were asked to be Parent Ambassadors for the 2024 Grad class and we didn’t hesitate. We have a combined total of six girls who are all pursuing prestigious and challenging programs in their post-secondary experience. They all received an inspired, stimulating and challenging education at SMLS. Two of us are alumnae and all three of us have been dedicated volunteers at the school… we felt such commitment to ensuring that this year’s Grad Bursary will have a lasting impact and to ensure that St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School continues to educate and develop girls that will challenge the world and themselves.”

“We are so grateful and blessed to have SMLS in our lives. I very much believe that we were very lucky, and that fate brought us together. To extend my support for SMLS, I wanted to pay it forward in the hope that it will continue to enrich the lives of other families as it has for us.”
– RENEE WANG,
“SMLS has been the catalyst of change for my daughter. Her growth academically and emotionally has been amazing and has positioned her well for the future. We believe it is extremely important to give back in any way possible so others can experience what my daughter has been lucky enough to experience at SMLS.”
