NYC, with its density and location is also challenged to keep adapting: meeting demands in low-cost housing, facing imminent environmental threats, or even entirely rethinking its urbanism to adapt to the new ways of interacting in 2020, during a pandemic. We envision a system that allows buildings to adapt throughout their entire lifespan. Selfsufficient modules built using Metsä Wood’s Kerto® LVL products come together as an entire building complex or are used independently, depending on the needs of the community throughout the material’s lifespan. Using a main structural frame made out of Metsä Wood’s Kerto® LVL, the modules use a series of infill layers (sliding openings, LVL partition walls, solar panels) that can be added and shed depending on the use. Water and solar energy are key to our project, and the modules are designed to manage these resources both in an apartment building scenario and while used individually.

Chicago Trio YSOA, Fall 2018 CTBUH, Top 25 Chicago, IL, USA

Chicago was at the forefront of inventing various typologies and structural systems for Tall Buildings for a major part of the 20th Century. There has been a shift in the 21st Century from Chicago to New York to now the Middle East and China when it comes to innovation in the design of tall buildings. The conjoined tower typology has mostly developed using the block-bridge type. The proposed three towers “dance” to lean into each other creating a second tier of public space and a structural tripod. The ground plane is a merging of systems such as the chicago metro, lake shore drive and the water taxis. The tallest tower reaches a height of a 1000 meters.

With offices in the tallest and residential in the lower halfs facing Lake Michigan and hotels above.

The junction is called the Cultural Band with Museums, Galleries etc.

The project creates a safe haven for the victims of domestic violence on their journey towards becoming Thrivers. Users of a city or buildings have a general sense of what spaces they feel safe and comfortable inside. Victims of domestic violence have a enhanced sense of awareness of the places around them. Within this context the aim of this project is to create this safe haven, the users should have a sense of ownership over the project, their own small scale urban environment which would be a city of their own, with different partner services coming together to cater to their requirements.

Architecture is a language to refamiliarise the body to the Urban and the Domestic environments outside of this project, using the element of surprise and familiarity.

An institution that becomes a safe public space.

The Reception is a key space in the project. The Receptionist has an expanded cone of awareness, you can view the waiting area, intake area and the floor above, from the comfort of their chair. It also allows the user to be completely aware of the space from wherever they’re located. The interior journey gives you glimpses of the exterior landscape keeping both connected at all times, without compromising the privacy of the survivors inside the building. The project creates a landscape buffer which allows an outdoor release for the survivors in an extremely safe place using nature as a barrier.

The spaces relate to each other through vision, proximity and materiality, but express themselves individually through form and color.

The Day Care is accessible to the parents lounge and the Yale Child Study Office. The office can counsel children in a space for play, with easy access to the outdoors.

Second Floor Circulation

The axis is programmed on every floor with leisure spaces for the visitors as well as the staff working at the center. On the firs floor it functions as a pantry for the waiting area, on the second it is a Library and Lunch Area for the staff, on the third it becomes an intake space. This axis is also brings light into the space.

Fluxing Porosity YSOA, Fall 2018 Partner - I-Ting Tsai Washington D.C, USA

The Deaf Space Studio questions students to think about architecture from a non oculo-centric view of the world. To think about this in detail, Gallaudet University was chosen as a site. Gallaudet University is an institution specifically meant for ASL users. The university developed a set of guidlines for architecture for deaf and deafblind people, called the deaf-space guidlines. They speak of sight lines, reflections, vibrations, seating arrangements etc. With those in mind and the Mall at the university as the site for the new Library, the proposal designs a new mall with landscaped roofs that help activate the currently dead space. The new library is a link between the university cafeteria and the new dorm made in compliance with deaf space guidlines. The interior layout flows like an intersection with clear sight lines.

Gili Cinta YSOA, Fall 2019 Eco-Resort Gili Meno, Indonesia

Gili Cinta, translated to english, means Love Island. The studio gave us the freedom to select our own clientele as we deem appropriate. The secluded beaches and a population of just 500 people inspired me to design a singles only resort to escape and find love in the process. The resort is a choreographed set of scenes to maximize interaction between the guests. The hostel is set in the midst of a large vegetable garden with the core of the hostel being a barbeque pit. The restaurant is made out of a set of modular seating components coming together as a carousel of probable mates. The site is scattered with First date spots, a restaurant over the sea, massage spots in the forest, jungle gyms etc. The culmination of the entire experience is to find someone to live at the Love Nest.

Atithi Devo Bhava KRVIA, Spring 2014 Textile Market Bangkok, Thailand

The Language and Identity Studio focuses on how Indian communities residing in foriegn nations, express their identity, through architecture, clothing, events and activities.

The Sikh community in Pahurat, Bangkok is involved extensively in the textile industry, and has helped Pahurat become the largest textile hub in Bangkok. The site was analysed as a set of core values that imparted identity.

“Atithi Devo Bhava”, in Sankrit, meaning “The guest is equivalent to god” is a value I observed in the day to day workings of the Textile Market and Gurudwara. With this as the core DNA of the site and the scaffold as an operational tool, the objective was to bring a real sense of porosity through the site and the project. A scaffold that is altered, embellished and used to define the formal and the informal, the public and the private.

Areas of Exception

Areas of Exception is a combination of two parameters, sound and volume of space. The relation of the two is used to design a tourist information center at the gates of a forest and bird sanctuary facing a lake. The analysis of sound and volume helped identify the contours and areas on site to best place walls. Bhopal is a city with both historical landmarks and projects by Charles Correa. Walls play a large part in the history of Bhopal and hence the choice to use walls as a mediums to operate on Site. The walls help level the site and minimize the cutting into the countours. The walls effectively split the project into a 9 grid plan with the central axis becoming a terraced marketplace allowing one to access the adjacent programs such as museums, bird watchers pavilions, staff offices, bus terminals and a wedding hall.

SRDA Internship May 2016 - Sept 2016 Mumbai, India

After Graduating, I interned at Samira Rathod Design Associates, a small firm in Mumbai, India that specializes in single family residences. When I joined the practice, it had just begun working on larger projects and I got the opportunity to be extremely involved in the design direction and client negotiations of a residential tower in Colombo, Sri Lanka. I was responsible for the planning of the individual units as well as facade deign options for an agreed upon massing options. Along with working on the tower, I worked on a second tower in Chennai, India, a concept presentation for a school in Pune, India and a competition entry for the Indian War Museum in Delhi, India. A firm known for its detailing in smaller scale projects, I got to experiment with how that language would translate to larger projects without losing the sensibilities of the firm.

The competition called for an installation at a music festival.

Music Festivals now are less about the music, and more about the images that come out of the festival, The instagram pictures.

The intent was to create a picture perfect installation using all the tropes made for good images, the millenial pink, the color blocking and abstracted forms. All of these are tied together on a ground plane, making it hard for the installation to be photographed to it’s maximum potential. The millenial pink leaves stains, the people occupying the furniture are a visual hindrance. It is an anti image culture installation that uses an excess of popular image culture now. The ground is reminiscent of Turkish delights, with abstract furniture that isn’t ergonomic, but in the context of a music festival, users would sit on any surface that might bring respite.
