SMITHSONIAN ACTIVE JOURNEYS
Getting outside to explore not only does wonders for the body and mind, it is also an extraordinary way to experience the world. Smithsonian Active Journeys are small-group trips that seek out the road less traveled and offer engaging adventures in the great outdoors. While these journeys are designed around activities such as hiking, walking, kayaking, and biking, they bear all the hallmarks of a Smithsonian Journeys travel experience: outstanding local guides, unique enrichment opportunities, and an in-depth exploration of nature and cultural history.
THE TRAIL IS CALLING!
From the Andes to the Annapurnas, we’ve selected routes for their spectacular scenery and their accessibility to both occasional and seasoned outdoorspeople. Most hikes and walks range from 3 to 7 miles a day, with low to moderate elevation changes, and some trips also include opportunities to kayak, canoe, or bike ride (see activity level descriptions on page 6). On certain excursions, you’ll have the option to take an easier or more challenging route if you wish. After each exhilarating day, you will return to comfortable accommodations chosen for their sense of place and their unbeatable location.
A SUSTAINABLE APPROACH TO SMALL-GROUP TRAVEL
With just 12 to 18 travelers using mostly their own feet to get around, our groups are attuned to their environment, making a minimal impact on nature and spending time in local communities. You’ll get acquainted with the people and their traditions and support small businesses, meeting with sustainable coffee cultivators in Costa Rica, for example, or enjoying a home-cooked lunch at a family farm in Iceland.
Smithsonian Active Journeys are run in collaboration with G Adventures, a leading small-group adventure travel company and a pioneer in sustainability for more than 30 years. From promoting community tourism to protecting wildlife in the destinations they visit, G Adventures operates with a commitment to traveling responsibly.
EACH ACTIVE JOURNEY INCLUDES:
• A knowledgeable trip leader and local guides
• Small groups with a maximum of 12 to 18 travelers
• Airport transfers upon arrival and departure
• Daily activities and excursions
• Internal flights where applicable
• Included meals as indicated by B (breakfast), L (lunch), and D (dinner) throughout each itinerary
• Gratuities
SUPPORTING THE SMITHSONIAN MISSION
When you travel with Smithsonian Journeys, your participation supports Smithsonian’s mission to preserve natural and cultural heritage, advance research, and share our resources with the world.
CHOOSE THE ACTIVITY LEVEL THAT FITS YOUR PACE
To help you select a journey that suits your pace and ability, we have designated four activity levels: light, moderate, energetic, and strenuous. Light trips typically include 2 to 5 miles of walking or easy hiking on several days of the itinerary, whereas on moderate trips, you’ll hike or walk up to 7 miles on most days with some elevation gain. Energetic trips will have you hiking or trekking 4 to 10 miles most days with significant elevation changes.
Stay tuned for our strenuous journeys: they are reserved for our most rigorous treks and will include 6 to 14 miles of daily hikes or treks over mountainous terrain.
For each of these activity levels, the itinerary may also include biking, kayaking, or canoeing. On certain excursions, you’ll have the option to take longer or shorter hikes.
ENRICHMENT EVERY STEP OF THE WAY
Wherever our Active Journeys take you, you’ll gain insights into the area’s cuisine and cultural traditions, wildlife and geology, connecting with local people as well as experts in the field. You may find yourself sharing meals with Berber families while hiking in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, or meeting pottery artisans in the Greek Isles. You’ll hike from one centuries-old temple to the next along Japan’s Shikoku pilgrimage route and get a taste of rural life on a bike ride amid the paddies of the Kibi Plain.
From gauchos in the hills of Patagonia to monks in Bhutan, spend time with local people who interpret both the natural and cultural landscape. Complement your time on the trail with cooking classes or wine tastings, guided tours of regional museums, and visits to historic sites.
UNIQUE ACCOMMODATIONS IN IDEAL LOCATIONS
When selecting accommodations for these active trips, we seek unique properties that showcase the region’s natural beauty and capture the local character. We choose them for their comfort and their relaxed atmosphere, and also for their location—sometimes just a few steps from the trailhead. Whether you stay in a stunning hotel set right at the edge of the Atlantic in the Azores or a traditional riad in the Fez medina filled with stunning architectural details, you will find a welcoming retreat after a day of exploring the great outdoors. In some cases, your accommodations are an integral part of your experience.
Stay in a stylish contemporary lodge under some of the darkest skies in Iceland and watch for the northern lights from the comfort of a cozy lounge—or your own room. Or admire the beautiful Bhutanese craftsmanship at your family-owned hotel in Thimphu.
Landhótel, Iceland
Le Grand Alcazar Riad, Morocco
Terceira Mar Hotel, Azores
LEADERS WITH DEEP LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
Your trip leaders are avid outdoorspeople themselves who come from the region you’re exploring and know the trails, the natural history, and the local culture inside and out. More than trail guides, they are also some of the best tour managers in the business, sensitive to the different needs of the group and able to adapt nimbly to changing circumstances and unexpected opportunities to make the most of each day. With their native knowledge of your destination, they will be your best resource for finding hidden gems in your free time—from restaurants loved by the locals to worthwhile sites to visit.
Along the way, local experts will join you to share their perspectives and insights. It might be a sheep farmer in New Zealand, a Gnaoua musician in Morocco, or a seasoned guide who can share the little-known stories of places like Peru or Sicily.
