OPENS FEBRUARY 7 16 Bars offers a rare glimpse at the human stories — and songs — that are locked away in our nation’s jails and prisons, following a unique rehabilitation effort in the Richmond City Justice Center that invites inmates to write and record original music. In the jail’s makeshift recording studio, four men collaborate on an album with Grammy-winning recording artist Todd “Speech” Thomas, from the iconic activist hip-hop group Arrested Development. OPENS FEBRUARY 21 Set on an isolated island in Brittany, France in 1760, Céline Sciamma’s incendiary Portrait of a Lady on Fire is an intimate and lush period piece that crackles with the intensity of first love. Artist Marianne is commissioned to paint the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a reluctant bride-to-be. Marianne arrives under the guise of companionship, observing Héloïse by day and secretly painting her at night.
