Mayor Eric Garcetti and other city leaders announced Tuesday the expansion of Los Angeles’ summer youth jobs program.

Garcetti was joined by White House Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett, Supervisor Mark Ridley Thomas, City Council President Herb Wesson, City Councilman Joe Buscaino, The Walt Disney Company Chairman and CEO Robert Iger, and representatives from Citibank at a 9 a.m. press conference at YO! Watts, 1513 E. 103rd St.

“My first press conference as Mayor was to announce my commitment to double L.A.’s summer youth jobs program to serve 10,000 Angelenos. Today, I am proud to announce we will reach that goal, because we are working together, public and private, on this strategic investment in our youth and our future economy,” Garcetti said.

“Too often, young people can fall behind during the summer when school is out. But our summer jobs program makes sure summer is a time for young people to get ahead by earning a paycheck, job skills, and financial education.”

The City of Carson is in excellent financial condition. In the last two years alone, Carson has added $12.8 million to its reserves. The City plans to use some that money to build a trust fund for its future retiree medical costs and to pay for improvements to public buildings.

While the recession was tough on all cities, conditions have clearly improved and Carson is moving forward. In order to create jobs and develop brownfield sites like former landfills, the City Council is looking to encourage foreign investment, which is already very strong in this region.

Rather than be reactive, the City is being proactive and looking for the best project for each site.

With the help of the business community and other government agencies, the City of Carson has high expectations. Carson has achieved much success already. It is a part of a strong region and is looking to an even brighter future each day.

College Athletes Can Unionize, Federal Agency Kain Colter, co-founder of the College Athletes Players Association

The National Labor Relations Board on Wednesday ruled college athletes are considered employees, a decision that moves Northwestern University football players a step closer to forming the nation's first college athletes' union.

The agency was tasked with deciding whether the football players qualify as employees under U.S. law, and hearings were held in Chicago.

The decision gives the players rights to unionize.

The regional director of the NLRB directed a secret ballot election be held to determine whether the players should be represented by the College Athletes Players Association (CAPA).

Northwestern University spokesman Alan K. Cubbage called the decision disappointing.

"While we respect the NLRB process and the regional director’s opinion," Cubbage said, "we disagree with it. Northwestern believes strongly that our student-athletes are not employees, but students. Unionization and collective bargaining are not the appropriate methods to address the concerns raised by student-athletes."

Northwestern plans to appeal the decision, Cubbage said.

Gospel Community Mourns Passing of Edna Tatum

Gospel commentator Edna Tatum passed away on March 14 after suffering a heart attack earlier this year.

Nationally known as ‘The Voice,’ Tatum was a popular emcee and gospel broadcaster for more than 30 years.

Her ministry spanned several decades of hosting concerts and narrating for gospel legends such as the Rev. James Cleveland, The Fourth of Mary, the Rev. Daryl Coley, Albertina Walker, and Kurt Carr.

In a 2011 Sentinel interview, she shared some of the most memorable moments in her career.

“I will always treasure learning and growing in Christ during my time with the great Rev. James Cleveland. Then, never will I forget performing live narration for Rev. Cleveland at Carnegie Hall, at three McDonald’s Gospel Festivals and continuing to be a guest host each year at the Chicago Gospel Festival, which attracts more than 200,000 people,” recalled Tatum. Her visitation and viewing was Tuesday, March 25, at 5 p.m., at Mount Moriah, 4269 South Figueroa Street in Los Angeles. A Tribute Musical followed the viewing at 7 p.m.
