Clean Clear Fun! W
hether it’s boating in crystal clear waters, fishing for record-breaking striped bass, or simply enjoying the great outdoors with your family and friends, Smith Lake has it all! Located just 30 minutes northwest of Birmingham, it is gently nestled within the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and lies within the counties of Cullman, Walker and Winston. Smith Lake was created by man, but has clearly been given the blessings of Mother Nature. Outdoor activities abound the area with camping, horseback riding, hiking, OHV riding, rock climbing, bird watching, geocaching, canoe exploring, boating, fishing.... the list goes on and on. An overload of natural beauty awaits.
™
About the lake - The 300-foot high dam, completed in 1961 by the Alabama Power Company, holds back the mighty Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River to form the lake. Smith Lake has a surface area of 21,200 acres, over 500 miles of shoreline, a watershed area of 944 square miles, a retention time of 435 days, and a maximum depth of 264 feet. The Winston County side of Smith Lake’s watershed is adorned by the 180,000-acre Bankhead National Forest which blankets the deeply dissected southern edge of the Cumberland Plateau. The Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River, Alabama’s only “Wild and Scenic” River, flows through the Bankhead National Forest. The Sipsey Wilderness, known as the “Land of a Thousand Waterfalls,” lies within the Bankhead National Forest and is home to Alabama’s largest tree, a tulip poplar with a 21-foot circumference at its base.
Smith Lake Jake - A Local Celebrity Smith Lake Jake is a male groundhog who lives with Heath and Ginger Whitworth. Years back, he was rescued from the side of a roadway, barely clinging to life. This famous groundhog not only predicts the weather, but also predicts American Idol and presidential primary winners. He’s friendly, loves traveling, marches in parades, annually appears on TV, and visits schools across the country as well as his friends at the Birmingham Zoo. If you’re in the right place at the right time, maybe you’ll be one of the lucky ones who gets a chance to meet him. Smith Lake Jake just loves meeting people — especially children.

We have expanded on many sections of the book this year and we sincerely hope you enjoy using it. This year, you will find us in even more locations with our own custom display racks stocked with plenty of copies for more people to see. In addition, our annual distribution has increased to 30,000 copies. We intend to increase distribution every year as advertisers continue to join us. Our goal is to maintain a steady supply annually for the Smith Lake area and to eventually expand to other distribution points around the state. Thank you to both the Walker and Cullman Chambers of Commerce for your support, both financially and with distribution. It’s an honor to be a member of both chambers and we look forward to continue doing our part to help promote tourism and business. Thanks also to Mike Jaudon for keeping it (and me) together! For our readers - Explore these pages and take advantage of the many lake area events and attractions that Smith Lake has to offer. If you’re here over the weekend, you’re welcome to attend Sunday service at any one of our local churches. Finally, please be sure to patronize our lake area businesses who, by their support, have provided this Visitor’s Guide for you to explore and enjoy.

any people who visit Smith Lake for the first time are shocked to find all the characteristics of a mountain lake within Alabama’s borders. In addition to the natural beauty and super-clean waters, Smith Lake offers the perfect habitat for striped bass. Over the past 20 years, Smith Lake has become one of the premier striped bass lakes in all of the US. The current Smith Lake striped bass record is 45 pounds and each and every year 35 to 40 pound striped bass are caught. In fact, striped bass weighing 20 to 30 pounds are quite common. Live shad, available locally, are the preferred bait.
Other fish commonly caught are largemouth bass, spotted bass, black crappie, bluegill, and channel catfish. The majority of bass, bream, and crappie fishing is done by casting to the numerous large rocks and fallen trees along the shoreline. The former world record and current state record 8 lb 15 oz spotted bass was caught here on March 18, 1978, by Phillip C. Terry of Decatur. Anglers can fish from the banks on US Forest Service land, the Bankhead National Forest, including the Sipsey Wilderness Area and Corinth, Houston and Clear Creek Recreational Areas.
Edward Dotsey proudly displays his 18 pound striped bass caught in November 2013 on Rock Creek.

Fishing licenses are required for residents age 16 years through age 64 who fish with rod and reel or artificial bait. In addition to being available at probate offices and many stores that carry fishing tackle or bait, Alabama Hunting and Fishing Licenses (or permits) are available by telephone: 1-888-848-6887 ($3.95 fee), or online at outdooralabama.com/fishing/freshwater/license . Resident and non-resident annual fishing licenses are valid from September 1 through August 31 each year. Residents pay $12 for an annual freshwater license. Non-resident license prices for adjacent states and Louisiana are based upon what those states charge Alabama residents. Other states and foreign visitors may be able to purchase either a $46 freshwater annual, a September 1 August 31, or $26 freshwater seven-day license.

World-Class Fishing “Fishing for Smith Lake Stripers’’
Guide: Bill Vines
205-647-7683 www.stripefishingheadquarters.com The striped bass is also called Atlantic striped bass, striper, linesider, rock, or rockfish. The striped bass has a streamlined, silvery body marked with longitudinal dark stripes running from behind the gills to the base of the tail. Common mature size can be over 3 1/2 feet. Striped bass are believed to live for up to 30 years. Striped bass will take a number of live and fresh baits, including bloodworms and shad.
Striped Bass
The largemouth is marked by a series of dark blotches forming a jagged horizontal stripe along each flank. It’s large mouth extends beyond the rear margin of the orbit. They are keenly sought after and are noted for the excitement of their fight. Largemouth bass will often become airborne in their effort to throw the hook. Anglers most often use lures such as plastic worms, jigs, crank baits and spinnerbaits.
Largemouth Bass
A spotted bass will resemble a largemouth bass in coloration but will have a smaller mouth. The Alabama spotted is highly prized as a gamefish and average size is much larger than the more common Kentucky spotted bass. The current record spotted bass, caught in Pine Flat Lake, CA, weighed 10.27 lb. Preferring cool and warm mountain streams and reservoirs with rocky bottoms, the spotted bass feeds on insects, crustaceans, frogs, annelid worms, and smaller fish.
Spotted Bass
Black crappies are most accurately identified by the seven or eight spines on its dorsal fin. They are usually silvery-gray to green in color and show black splotches over the entire body. The fish is typically 4–8 inches long. They prefer areas with little or no current, clear water, and abundant cover such as submerged timber or vegetation, as well as sand or mud bottoms. Crappies feed early in the morning and from about midnight until around 2am. Small crappie feed on small fishes like shad and minnows. Adults feed on insects and crustaceans.
Black Crappie
The bluegill has a darkened spot on the posterior edge of the gills and base of the dorsal fin. The sides of its head and chin are a dark shade of blue with a yellowish or bright orange on its breast and abdomen. They range in size from 4 to 12 inches. The largest ever caught was 4 lbs, 12 oz in 1950. Bluegill live in shallow waters in warmer months. They prefer water with many plants, and hide within logs or weeds where they search for food. They eat insect larvae, crayfish, leeches, snails, other small fish, as well as the occasional anglers night crawler.
Bluegill
Channel “cats” are the most fished catfish species in the US. The average size is between 2 and 4 lbs. A channel cat over 20 lbs is considered a spectacular catch. They nest in crevices, hollows, and debris, to protect their eggs from currents. Channel cats possess very keen senses of smell and taste. In fact, they actually have taste buds distributed over the surface of their entire body. These senses allows the fish to find food in dark or muddy water with ease. They can be caught using crickets, night crawlers, minnows, shad, crawfish, and frogs. Catfish have been known to bite on nearly anything of flavor you may have on your hook. (205) 265-1121

Construction Underway - Bass Fishing Hall of Fame Coming Soon to Smith Lake! The Bass Fishing Hall of Fame is a nonprofit organization dedicated to all anglers, manufacturers, tackle dealers, media and other related companies who further the sport of bass fishing. In February 2013 the board of directors announced the completion of a decade-long, exhaustive quest to secure a permanent home with the selection of Cullman, Alabama as the future site of the Hall, with work to commence immediately. The permanent Hall site will be constructed as a joint project with the City of Cullman, Cullman County and the City of Good Hope – a project that includes an adjacent civic/convention center, all of which will be housed on the 110-acre parcel known as the Burrow property. The Hall will enjoy a dedicated 30 acres of the property, which will include ponds, gardens and an aquatic-education center. The entire project is estimated to cost in excess $17 million with structures that will encompass 101,000 square feet. Support the BFHOF by becoming a member. Call 888.690.2277 for more information.

Fishing Below the Dam The Smith Lake Dam tailrace is the No.1 rated spot in Alabama for fly fishing for rainbow trout. The cold waters below the dam are stocked frequently with rainbow trout and catches of up to 2 pounds are very common. The tailrace record is more than 5 pounds. If you’re fishing in the tailrace area, don’t be surprised if you hook a huge striped bass or hybrid bass once in a while. The striped and hybrid migrate here at different times of the year and give unsuspecting fly fishermen the shock of their lives! The world record 23-pound hybrid bass was caught here.

World-Class Fishing - Alabama Bass Trail “Alabama is a great state for fishing,” Governor Robert Bentley said. “We have professional tournaments here on a regular basis. The goal of this amateur tournament is simple. We want to encourage more people to fish where the pros fish. The Alabama Bass Trail was established to help us share our lakes and rivers with more people. When more people come to our lakes and rivers, that increases tourism. And when tourism increases, that benefits our local and state economies.”
A Premium Fishing Experience The state of Alabama has secured its reputation as a worldclass destination for anglers by creating the first-ever premium fishing experience for bass fishermen. The Alabama Bass Trail features 11 of Alabama’s premiere bass-fishing lakes and stretches from the mountains of North Alabama south to the Mobile Delta. With a mild climate, mineral rich reservoirs, affordable lodging and dining, as well as public access to boat ramps and marinas, Alabama is a yearround destination for anglers from across the country.
merges with excellent marinas and boat ramps, great accommodations and a welcoming atmosphere among local businesses. The Amateur Angler Tournament Series beginning in February, 2014, is a team-style tournament series held on ten of the lakes of the Alabama Bass Trail. The championship is a 125 boat, two-day event. The 125 boats are comprised of the top 50 teams in points from both divisions that fished all five events in their respective divisions along with the top 25 student boats collectively from both divisions that fished all five events in their respective division.
The trail offers you an opportunity to fish where the pro’s fish. Alabama’s waters have been home to hundreds of regional and national tournament competitions drawing all the biggest names in the sport to the state repeatedly. It’s also home to many top touring pros, both those who grew up here and those who moved here to enjoy great bassing resources in all seasons. The lakes represented here are by no means the only outstanding bassing lakes in Alabama, but they represent a great cross-section scattered across the 52,400-square-mile state, where the combination of a top-quality fishing experience 2014 Smith Lake Book™

You must be licensed to operate a vessel. To get started, you can take your boating course online at www.boat-ed.com/Alabama. When you pass, your Boating Course Certificate of Completion will be sent to you by mail to take to a DPS License Examining office in your area. Check Out Your Boat - Many people put their boats in the water without first checking belts, fluids and motors, and end up having to be towed in. Make sure your boat is in good working order before taking it out for the first time. Check Your Safety Equipment - Often boaters take their safety equipment out of the boat for the winter season. Make sure all required equipment is put on the boat and is in good working order. Check Your Life Jackets - Make sure all life jackets are in good working order. All straps, buckles and zippers need to be operational, and the life jackets cannot have any rips or tears.
passengers safe. Boating classes are offered around the state of Alabama. If you drive a boat, you must have an operator’s license. Courtesy on the Water - From the time you start to tow the boat to the launching ramp until the time you take it out at night, courtesy plays a big part in the boating adventure. Remember the golden rule and treat others the way you would want to be treated. Be careful of your wake, both around homes and around other boaters. Don’t tie up the launching ramp while loading equipment on and off your boat. Keep A Weather Eye Out - Storms can come up quickly, especially in the summertime, so keep an eye to the sky. Watch for temperature changes, shifts in wind patterns, and changes in cloud formations. All these can signal storms moving in. If caught in a storm, try to get to the nearest

must wear a life jacket. Don’t Drink and Drive A Boat - Just like on the highway, drinking and operating a boat is against the law. In many ways, it can be even more dangerous. Boaters tend to get a condition called boater’s fatigue, caused by the glare of the sun, action of the waves, and general tiredness towards the end of the day. Adding alcohol to this situation can create a deadly combination.
Drive (Operate) Defensively - Be aware of what other boaters are doing around you. Even if you have the right-of-way, if the other boater doesn’t give way to your vessel, you give way. Especially keep an eye out for boaters on Jet Skis, Sea-Doos, etc. Being smaller, they tend to get overlooked by other boaters. Expect the Unexpected and Wear a Life Jacket Do it for yourself and your family. Most boating fatalities are the result of capsizing or falls overboard when the victims were not wearing a life jacket. All children under eight years of age must wear a life jacket while on a boat. It’s the law! Everyone on board a vessel must have a life jacket available to them. Make sure they fit properly and are in good condition. The Bankhead National Forest & Sipsey Wilderness Area

The Sipsey Wilderness Area 2
The Bankhead National Forest
The Sipsey Wilderness is a place for those who want to get away from modern conveniences without the sound of traffic, telephones, and TV’s and instead listen to the songs of the warblers, the hammering beaks of woodpeckers, the hoot of the great horned owl, the howl of the lone coyote, and the sound of water running over rocks and boulders in the many streams flowing through this portion of the Warrior Mountains. The Sipsey Wilderness lies within the Bankhead National Forest around the Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River in northwestern Alabama. It is the third largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi River. Designated in 1975 and expanded in 1988, the 24,922 acre Sipsey is the largest and most frequently visited Wilderness area in Alabama and contains dozens of waterfalls. The wilderness consists of the low plateau of Brindley Mountain which is dissected into a rough landscape by several creeks and rivers. Due to the layers of limestone and sandstone that make up the area, waterfalls are very common in the wilderness. This feature has earned the wilderness the nickname “Land of 1000 Waterfalls.” Sightseeing, hiking, canoeing, backpacking, and horseback riding are only a few of the many outdoor recreational activities to be enjoyed by visitors. The US Forest Service has designated and established trails for hiking, horseback riding, and horse or mule drawn wagons. These trails and roads provide access to secluded sandstone cliffs, wonderful waterfalls, fantastic fall foliage, beautiful wildflowers, and tremendous trees. Bankhead Ranger District 205-489-5111

The William B. Bankhead National Forest is Alabama’s largest National Forest with 181,230 acres and is home of Alabama’s only National Wild and Scenic River, the Sipsey Fork. It is located in northwestern Alabama, around the town of Double Springs; it is named in honor of William B. Bankhead, a longtime U.S. Representative from Alabama. Known as the “land of a thousand waterfalls,” this vast monument to nature and man is popular for hiking, horseback riding, hunting, boating, fishing, swimming, canoeing and more. Within the forest lies the Sipsey Wilderness, with a host of wildlife and an abundance of swift streams, limestone bluffs, and waterfalls. Native American relics abound in Bankhead, one of the Southern United State’s premier sites for petroglyphs, prehistoric drawings, and rock carvings at sites such as the Kinlock Shelter. The forest is headquartered in Montgomery, as are all four National Forests in Alabama (Conecuh, Talladega, Tuskegee, and William B. Bankhead). There are local ranger district offices located in Double Springs. The forest was established as Alabama National Forest on January 15, 1918, with 66,008 acres. On June 19, 1936, it was renamed Black Warrior National Forest, which in turn was renamed William B. Bankhead National Forest on June 17, 1942. Bankhead Ranger District 205-489-5111

Hiking the Sipsey Wilderness 22 Wild-flowing creeks in northwestern Alabama converge to become the Sipsey River, 61 miles of which has been designated “Wild and Scenic.” Running below sandstone bluffs that rise 30 to 100 feet above the water, through a forest of often imposing second-growth trees and occasional small stands of virgin timber, the Sipsey and its tributaries slice through the Wilderness. Sinkholes, small caves, and scenic overlooks are plentiful. Less plentiful is the rare, flattened musk turtle, an inhabitant of the Sipsey. Six established trails, all rated easy to moderate, crisscross the area. Several depart from the Sipsey River Recreation Site on the southern boundary, which has sanitary facilities, drinkable water, no developed campsites, and no fee. Sipsey trails receive moderate to heavy human use year round. Wilderness camping, building campfires, hunting, and fishing are permitted and horsepackers are allowed on designated trails.

Attractions - Parks & Recreation Bankhead Forest - ATV Trails 12 ATV trails are available throughout the William B. Bankhead National Forest, the entrance of which is located about 40 miles from Wilburn. The ATV trail at the forest, called the Flint Creek Multiple-Use Trail, allows state-licensed off-road vehicles, such as ATVs. Unlicensed ATVs are allowed on trails if they are 50 inches wide or slimmer. Because this is a multiple-use trail, riders are encouraged to exercise caution when riding, especially when cresting hills or rounding curves. Bankhead Ranger District 205-489-5111
Birdwatching Birdwatching in Winston and Cullman Counties has grown in interest in recent years. In Winston County, the 25,000-acre Sipsey Wilderness in the Bankhead National Forest is the second largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi. About 150 species have been documented in the vicinity, including the sharp-shinned hawk, American redstart, and black-throated green, cerulean, and black-and-white warblers. Kinlock Falls and Thompson Creek Bridge yield a spectacular landscape of cliffs, gorges, and hardwoods, with excellent birding opportunities. In Cullman County, dense woodlands and rich waters contribute to a natural diversity of birds and other wildlife. This year, the area became home to the North Alabama Birding Trail, one of America’s newest bird watching trails. The trail features 50 designated stations, many with a developed kiosk, that allows visitors to observe a rich diversity of feathered friends.

Attractions - Golfing Musgrove Country Club
13
A beautiful blend of log-sturdy, pioneer spaciousness with modern brick, block, and tile makes the club house of Musgrove Country Club one of the most unique in the nation. Col. L. B. Musgrove completed the original log building in 1924 as a place to entertain his business associates and friends from Wall Street and other parts of the nation. All 556 logs in the original building were cut from the 228 acres of “forest primeval” club property where they were hauled to the site, creosoted, and chain-hoisted into place at a rate of three to four logs per day. A 9-hole golf course was also part of the original property, but nine more holes were added in 1960. In 1992, architect Jerry Pate designed improvements to the course, making it one of the best in the state. Bent-grass greens and lush 410 Bermuda fairways complement the design. The pro shop and clubhouse are connected to the golf course by two wooden, swinging bridges that cross Blackwater Creek near the dam originally built to furnish electricity to the Club. Musgrove Country Club, once the playground of the very rich, is today the recreational spot of some 525 resident and non-resident members. 205-221-7900 916 Country Club Road, Jasper, AL 35503 www.VisitSmithLake.com

Clarkson Covered Bridge, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is one of Cullman County’s most well known attractions and is also one of the area’s most historically rich sites. Built in 1904, the 270-foot lattice-truss bridge is now one of only 14 covered bridges remaining in Alabama. Once used regularly by farmers and travelers to cross Crooked Creek, the weather worn bridge is now closed to traffic, but has become the centerpiece of a park built in periodfashion which showcases its historical significance. With the help of concerned citizens working on a project commemorating America’s Bicentennial, the Cullman County Commission restored the site and embellished the grounds with hiking trails, a picnic area, a dogtrot log cabin, and working grist mill. What began as a small community cleanup in 2000 has evolved into a large-scale grassroots statewide project with tens of thousands of volunteers participating, including homeowner and boat owner associations, environmental groups, Alabama Power employees, schools and civic organizations. Alabama Power, with the help of volunteers around Smith Lake, removes thousands of pounds of trash and debris every year from Smith Lake. The trash and debris removed includes bottles and cans, tires, boats, old Styrofoam floats, and whatever does not belong.
Smith Lake Paddle Boards is offering a monthly mileage builder group paddle beginning in May of 2014. The purpose is to help those wanting to increase their paddle endurance and speed in a fun group setting. The group paddle is open to all skill levels and will be held at Silverock Cove. A one-mile race on May 3rd will kick off the mileage builder series. Each month we will build on our distance training by adding a mile. The second race on June 14th will be a two-mile race. July 12th will be a three-mile race and August 9th will finish the series with a four-mile race.
To participate in a cleanup, simply select a location close to you, contact the organization and show up. Volunteers are welcome at each county cleanup. Bring friends, family, or a community group. Call for specific dates and times. The cleanups are usually held each year in the Spring and Fall.

Chef Troy, originally from Lancaster, California, gained his experience over the course of 25 years under the direction of talented Master Chefs from Boston, New York, Italy, Germany, and Mexico. In addition, Chef Troy worked as Chef in 3 Cajun restaurants over the years. A few years ago, in an effort to be closer to his father, he moved to Alabama. A friend told him about Smith Lake and he decided that this was the place to make a fresh start. As fate would have it, not only did Troy fall in love with the lake area, but also fell in love with his wife and business partner, Angie. After working the kitchens of a few local restaurants, Troy and Angie decided to open their own restaurant. Since opening in 2009, Chef Troy’s Talk of the Town Restaurant has been a hit in the Smith Lake area and draws hungry diners from far and wide. We know that you’ll enjoy your visit. smithlakebook.com
