I’m Ethan. I’m a 90s kid, passionate about design, a proud novocastrian and a bit of a nerd.

My architectural understanding gravitates towards what architecture offers the human condition? What do we provide? My answer leans on supporting people, space which can be more productive, more comforting and challenge the complacency of social normals we have come to know. I’m intrigued by the minimal intervention for maximum impact, data abstraction and the impact symmetry has on architecture.

In my downtime, I can be found researching technologies, both post modern and primative, gaming, throwing myself at a personal design project, tinkering in the garage, 3D printing parts for my 3D printer, reading, coffee consumption or spoiling my cats.

A critique of public space, innovation and democratic colleges.

Newcastle needs new is a project which accepts the shortfalls of designing today for tomorrows innovation, providing a canvas for future generations while reducing the built footprint within the CBD to regenerate productive land within the heart of Newcastle.

Five towers are extruded along the perimeter of the site, with subtractions made to correct orientation for solar performance and carbon capture. The interal floorplates are sparsly divided where the majority of floors intend for offices and residential to be lightweight construction and stacked within individual floors, where innovation is required to fill the space over an era.

A redesign of western mourning and post mortem space utilization.

Momento questions the reality of death, do we need to permanatly dwell in land, well after our family and friends have also departed?

Alkaline hydrolosis is a catalyst for a procession through a system within the coal cliffs which began life in Newcastle and ultimately is causing the death of global climate systems. The departed reside within a coal temple which uses coal mining processes as architecture where each individual plot slowly purifies itself over 80 years, providing space for a following generation.

Remains which survive hydrolosis become a seed for increasing ocean biodiversity through eternal reefs and a symbol to ancestry to retain a semblance of past lives, as it is still important to respect past lives.

The process was guided significantly through experimental modelmaking, using coal, concrete, steel and plaster to explore subtractive designing and architecture as voids.

A B ST R AC T I O N

Through the lens of wireless internet signal, Digital Landscapes is a designed process where land or site can be viewed as a completely different landscape than we can see or perceive.

The data from wireless is applied to a framework which was able to generate new topographics for a site, and built form which acts as isolation from the digital prescence which is becoming an increasing rarity.

This isolation being integrated to public space was important to providing respite for digital anxiety and the disconnection allows for more intimate human interaction away from the internet.

Hiding Symmetry within Asymmetry The Goal for this experiment was to create a form which was completely absent of symmetric properties, but was able to cast or project symmetric shadows. With rapid prototyping, experimentation was greatly enhanced and limits which would constrain traditional making were not shackles to the design possibilities.
