The API Codes and Standards -A beacon for the Oil and Natural Gas Industry

The API or American Petroleum Institute is the sole representative of the entire oil and natural gas industry in the United States and the publisher and distributer of codes and standards that are meant to guide the rest of the industry.

The API is also a national trade association and began working during World War 1 and has since been the official distributer of standards pertaining to the oil and natural gas industry. The current CEO of the organization is Jack N. Gerard.

The Institute distributes numerous copies of its publications each year. The aim is to uplift the standard of design as well as operations so that the end results are effective as well as environmentally viable.

The API Codes and Standards are usually uncontroversial and their goal is chiefly to protect the lives of people and to encourage sustainable growth of the industry. The institute is also involved in negotiation of the industry with various governmental and legal organisations and regulatory bodies. The certifications of industrial standards as well as educational outreach programmes are regularly carried out by the organisation. The API also funds research into various aspects of the petroleum industry and sometimes also carries out studies itself.

Apart from being the official distributer of standards it also has many front groups such as the NH Energy Forum. Also among the institute’s functions are formulating guidelines for the energy conservation of motor oil, standards in the design and manufacture of pressure vessels and also standards in the fabrication of products such as precision thread gauges and custom gauges.

The API also supports the Energy Citizens Group but there have been allegations of lobbying since only the employees of the energy industry were allowed to attend the very first event of the group in Houston in August 2009.
