Smiley Pete Publishing
Welcome to the second annual “Smiley Pete’s Best of Lex” issue!
Smiley Pete Publishing started in 1997 as a platform to highlight some of the people, places and things that make Lexington unique and wonderful, and this project is an extension of that.
Over the past couple months, our readers submitted more than 260,000 votes for their favorite businesses, people and places, in more than 100 categories. The process of tallying the votes, formatting the list of winners, collecting photos, and assigning / reading the submissions has been both painstaking and rewarding, and has helped drive home just how special our city is.
As Lexington celebrates its 250th year in 2025, we can’t help but reflect on our own small part in the city’s story over the last 28 years.
For nearly three decades, Smiley Pete has been honored to tell the stories of our community — stories that remind us of the many things that bring us together. Whether it's a shared love for a favorite Indian restaurant or admiration of a beloved UK basketball player, we are constantly reminded that we are far more alike than di erent, and that Lexington is a truly special place to call home.
With that spirit in mind, we are delighted to share these results with you — a reflection of the people, places, and experiences that make our city shine.
Thank you for being part of the journey!

Smiley Pete’s Best of Lex sponsor Debra Hensley, an avid supporter of many Lexington philanthropic organizations, has opted to donate her space to a nonprofit that she is passionate about: Black Yarn.
Black Yarn, Inc., a collective of community storytellers and advocates, weaves Black narratives into the fabric of local history. Through film, research and collaboration, Black Yarn confronts economic injustice and connects Black experiences with those of all Americans.

Black Yarn’s debut documentary, Lexington: Resilience in the Redline, premieres on June 27 at the historic Lyric Theatre. The film features the candid perspectives of 32 Lexington residents, activists, artists, and scholars on our city’s ongoing segregation. Resilience in the Redline corrects widely shared misconceptions about Lexington’s history and offers a path forward toward a more just city. The film features great music from local artists. It will entertain, educate, and strengthen our community.
The premiere event will include food, film, and an opportunity to hear from and talk with makers involved with the film. As part of Homecoming Month in Lexington’s 250 th year, Resilience in the Redline serves as a powerful tribute to Black Lexingtonians who continue to thrive despite systemic injustice. A beautifully crafted venue with a rich history, the Lexington Opera House has been meticulously restored time and again. Originally opened as The Opera House in 1850, the venue was lost to a fire in 1886. Less than a year later, it was rebuilt, with no expense spared. As entertainment trends evolved, so did the theater — converted into a movie house in 1926, it remained without live performances for 50 years. A major renovation in 1976 restored its grandeur, rebuilding the stage and updating the space for modern productions. More than a century after first opening its doors, the Lexington Opera House reclaimed its role as a premier live performance venue.
Now owned by the city of Lexington and managed by Oak View Group since 2022, the theater continues to shine under the glow of its newly restored marquee. Once home to legends like Al Jolson, W.C. Fields, Will Rogers, and Harry Houdini, today it hosts touring Broadway productions, local dance performances, world-class musicians, and top stand-up comedians.
Balancing deep roots in Lexington’s past with a dynamic vision for the future, the Lexington Opera House remains an irreplaceable cultural institution— a true local gem for live entertainment. ■

Lexington’s film scene got a surge of energy with the launch of the Twelve Lions Film Festival at the Kentucky Theatre in 2023.
Founded by the theater’s executive director, Hayward Wilkerson, and board chair, Lisa Meek, the festival brings independent films, premieres, panels, and parties to the heart of downtown Lexington. The historic Kentucky Theatre, with its ornate plasterwork and storied past, serves as a stunning backdrop for many screenings, as well as the opening and closing night receptions. Additional events and screenings take place in nearby downtown venues.
More than just a showcase for bold filmmaking, Twelve Lions celebrates Kentucky’s creative spirit by fostering an environment where filmmakers and fans can connect, learn, and discover new voices.
Named after the 12 lions embedded in the theater’s plaster friezes, the festival blends cinema, community, and local pride into a vibrant four-day celebration.
Whether you’re a cinephile, an industry insider, or simply looking for a weekend of film and fun, Twelve Lions is quickly becoming one of the Bluegrass’s most unique and cherished annual events. n

BY GWENDA BOND, VOTED AS A BEST LOCAL AUTHOR
To get to 2nd Story, the forward-thinking downtown exhibition space that dynamo curator Leah Kolb opened in 2023, you walk along Short Street, counting off buildings, feeling as if you never quite remember which one it is. Oh, there’s the sidewalk sign, you think, pointing up. You take the stairs to the second floor in anticipation, and find two rooms filled with art that fires your soul and brain. Perhaps it’s Israel Campos’ large pieces blending MexicanAmerican culture with pre-Columbian imagery and environmental themes. Or maybe it’s the vibrant, playful, punk-influenced sculptures by Kentucky’s own Hannah Smith, speaking directly to the anxiety of the present moment. Or, or, or…

Without fail, whoever the featured artist, you’ll feel the lightning strike of discovery that comes when you encounter someone doing vital work. And that’s not all that Kolb brings to this small but mighty space — she also presents a range of programming for the curious, opening the conversation about ways of encountering art. Talks have featured experts on dog behavior, the history of neon signs, and the native peoples of Kentucky.
Get wandering to one of Lexington’s most fabulous new galleries and public spaces. You’ll see the sign. And I’ll see you there. n

Tucked behind Michler’s Florist, Kentucky Native Café is an enchanting urban escape where food, drink and community come together around a lush, plant-filled backdrop. The European beer-gardeninspired café offers craft beer, wine and seasonal bites perfect for lingering afternoons and cozy evenings.
The café’s earthy patio and greenhouse setting creates a botanical vibe accented by a rotating lineup of events, which includes live music on select afternoons and evenings. Fall and winter Fridays are Raclette Night, when melted cheese is scraped fresh in the greenhouse. For literary lovers, the Last Monday Reading Series offers a monthly dose of poetry and prose from regional authors.
Seasonal highlights like the Christmas Market at Michler’s transforms the space into a festive gathering of artists, food lovers and neighbors, adding to the café’s reputation as a welcoming space for the community to gather. Whether you’re craving a cheese sandwich, a burrata plate, or a watermelon salad, the menu reflects the season and Lexington’s local spirit. Pair it all with craft beer, prosecco or espresso, and you’ve got one of Lexington’s most charming spots to sip and relax with friends. n

Ode to Joe Bologna’s
BY EMILY MARKS
Tucked into a former synagogue near the University of Kentucky campus is a treasured Lexington culinary institution: Joe Bologna’s.
Whether you love the breadsticks as big as your forearm, the “Everything Pizza” that still comes with anchovies, or the homemade soups made by Joe himself (sometimes during a dinner rush), there’s nothing else like it in town. But, just under the smell of garlic and marinara is another key ingredient: the company culture created by Joe, who recently retired.
In part because of the unique way Joe arranged shifts; in part because the employees are often college students in the beginning stages of determining who they will become; and maybe in part because of a bit of magic, working at Joe’s is a formative experience for many.
Twenty years out from my tenure, I still have deep friendships with my former coworkers. We are in book club together, we go camping together, and we’ve relished the opportunity to share each other’s lives as they unfolded. But friendship isn’t all I found at Joe Bologna’s — I also found the person who would become my husband and the father to my children. I was a snarky server, he was a goofy line cook, and Joe himself attended our wedding. Sixteen years and two daughters later, I am forever grateful for what Joe created, and that I still get to go back every once in a while and order a garden veggie pizza – hold the green pepper, add pineapple. You’ll thank me later. n

SMILEY PETE STAFF SALUTE
Keeneland racetrack is a wellknown Lexington institution, beloved for highlighting the Bluegrass region’s natural beauty and timeless hospitality in a way that feels both special and effortless. With limestone structures, well-manicured lawns, fancy-wallpapered restrooms, stunning Thoroughbreds and beautiful people dressed to the nines, the destination simultaneously gives elements of “exclusive country estate” while also being welcoming, accessible and accommodating to the general public.
Nestled within Keeneland’s grounds is another institution special for reasons that are both similar and completely different: the Keeneland Track Kitchen.
With friendly, down-to-earth employees, an unassuming cafeteria-style atmosphere, and delicious and affordable breakfast and lunch options, the eatery is designed to serve a diverse array of diners — primarily the horse trainers, jockeys, groomers, barn managers and others who work on-site, but it’s also open to the public seven days a week, starting at 6 a.m. The variety of a la carte options allows any number of different approaches to ordering, almost any of which will come to less than $10. This hidden gem is a culinary and cultural treasure in the heart of the Bluegrass. n

Ode to The Burl
SMILEY PETE STAFF SALUTE
In the nine years since it opened its doors, The Burl has become one of the most revered live music venues, not only in Lexington but in the surrounding region.
Nestled in the heart of Lexington’s historic Distillery District, The Burl has hosted a menagerie of artists from various genres, including The Struts and The Supersuckers, Billy Strings, Tyler Childers, Grace Potter and Sixpence None the Richer. The intimate room, with its reclaimed wooden walls and iconic stained-glass window gracing the backdrop of the stage, has become an almost church-like comfort zone for local music fans who show up more than 300 nights a year.
The building at 375 Thompson Road has been standing since 1926, when it served as a dock and hub for Texaco Oil. The Burl set up shop there in July 2016, and while it certainly hit the ground running, it has continued to evolve to new heights with no sign of slowing down anytime soon. During warm-weather months, an outdoor loading dock is transformed into a stage allowing the venue to host outdoor shows to an even larger capacity audience. Owners have opened Burl Arcade, featuring dozens of retro arcade games, and Burl Brew, a brewery with ample seating, pool tables and large-screen televisions, in surrounding buildings in recent years, transforming an already booming business into an entire campus of entertainment. n

Ode to Comedy at Barrel53
BY MELODY COLETTE, VOTED AS A "BEST BLOGGER/INFLUENCER"
Lexington's stand-up comedy scene is growing with the rabid tenacity of a milea-minute vine. New open mics are popping up left and right, but one venue in particular is rising to the top as the best place to hear Lexington's most clever storytellers.
Comedian Ian Sethi hosts the 8PM weekly show at Barrel 53, the lounge inside of Hotel Lex. The seats (and sign-up list) both fill up quickly, and you can hear the crowd from the parking lot. Conveniently located off I-75, the shows draw dozens of local and touring comics, and even national acts.
In addition to providing an inclusive and supportive comedy scene community, Barrel 53 offers a food and drink menu with enough options to give someone with ADHD a stroke, including bourbon-glazed wings, prime rib, and my personal new obsession, hand-tossed pizzas, which have no business being that good.
These Wednesday nights are more than just cackling alongside friends and life-altering pizza. They are massive steps towards designating Lexington as a leading destination for stand-up comedy. n

Ode to Fred Mills
BY MAX MORRIS, KENTUCKY THEATRE FILM PROGRAMMER AND ASSISTANT MANAGER
Ever since I was a budding young cinephile attending Summer Classics at the Kentucky Theatre weekly with my dad, few visages in Lexington could bring a smile to my face like that of Fred Mills behind the concession stand. Fred has been working at the Main Street institution since 1964, over half of the theater’s 103-year lifespan.
Now, 20 years on from my first encounters with him, Fred is now my boss — and I’m happy to say those feelings have never changed; in fact, they’ve only grown. With Fred, a day’s work never feels like “work” — just like spending time with an old friend. Whether slinging popcorn or just chatting with regulars about the latest local gossip, he always has his finger on the pulse of downtown Lexington. Surely the sweetest and most humble man to ever have his own bobblehead, his place among “Best Lexingtonians” is certainly well-earned. n

Ode to Lexington Public Libraries
BY JILLIAN PASCALE-HAGUE
As an educator and a parent, I have been so grateful for the deep well of resources the Lexington Public Libraries have provided for my family. From my youngest’s first year, we faithfully attended baby and toddler storytimes at the Tates Creek Branch — I still have some of the sweet crafts my kids made during those events. While my kids were in elementary school, I relied on the library’s summer reading programs and activities to give us structure and enrichment from May to August. I was always impressed by the care and creativity of the staff. We dissected owl pellets! We mummified a Barbie! We 3-D printed a cookie cutter! Now, with a teenager, I am moved by the ways the library has affirmed and celebrated the diversity of our city. My teen had a blast at the Pride Prom last year, and we both love going to the Central Branch to browse the stacks and look over the wide variety of upcoming events.
At the library, we have found more than books. We’ve found a village that has supported us from the start. Lexington is fortunate to have a library system that welcomes every member of our community — they make our city a better place for all of us! n

Ode to Lee Kiefer: The Most Decorated Women’s Foil Fencer in U.S. History
SMILEY PETE STAFF SALUTE
As the most decorated women’s foil fencer in American history, Lexington-based athlete Lee Kiefer has carved her name into the walls of legend — and she’s not finished yet.
A four-time Olympian, Kiefer won individual gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and followed it up by taking both individual and team gold at the 2024 Paris games.
Born in Cleveland but raised here in Lexington, fencing is in Keifer’s blood. Her father captained the Duke fencing team, her sister was an NCAA champion at Harvard, and her brother fenced at Notre Dame, where Kiefer herself also fenced, earning four NCAA titles during her tenure there. The 2012 Paul Laurence Dunbar graduate racked up an astonishing 50 titles between Pan American Championship and World Cup competitions before moving on to the Olympics.
Whatever her future holds, her precision, resilience, and drive make her an icon both in modern American sports and Lexington’s storied history. n

Ode to Lexington’s Green Spaces
BY COLE ARIMES, VOTED AS A “BEST CHEF”
Whether we’re taking our dog, Hardy, for a walk through Woodland Park, spending the afternoon at Jacobson Park or McConnell Springs, or getting out for a hike at Raven’s Run, my family and I are big fans of Lexington’s green spaces. I try to take every opportunity to get outside and decompress from the hustle of the kitchen and business ownership, and the natural beauty of Lexington parks makes it easy.
I started taking our two kids hiking and camping during the pandemic, as a way for all of us to let loose a bit. Now, that affinity for the outdoors has become a big part of our family’s lifestyle. For Lexington to have such great parks and hiking trails within an easy drive of downtown is fantastic. n

Ode to Isabel Yates
Oct. 29, 1924-Feb. 26, 2025
BY LEXINGTON MAYOR LINDA GORTON
Smiley Pete is asking me to write a tribute to Isabel Yates in 200 words … a tall order. Not that she was tall. She was small, but mighty, always dressed to the nines, utterly charming, and with a delightfully thick South Carolina accent. Everyone loved her.
She entered local politics at age 66, winning a seat on the Urban County Council. Over 11 years on Council, she proceeded to take on our toughest issues. She combined an engaging smile with a spine of steel — a true Steel Magnolia. For me, she was a wonderful mentor and friend, demonstrating how to be a good public servant. She encouraged me to listen to all sides of an issue. “Even the thinnest pancake has two sides,” she would say.
One reason for Isabel’s success was her drive to get things done. Many times she said, “Linda, just take action. Listen to people for input, don't make anything about yourself, and just get the work done to serve others.” We can all learn from her approach to work for the greater good.
Lexington would be a very different place had Isabel not come our way. She raised money for dozens of good causes in our town … saying “no” to her was just about impossible. The Kentucky Theatre, McConnell Springs, Lexington Philharmonic, UK Opera Theatre, Sanders Brown Center for Aging … all those, and many more, benefited from her fund-raising.
Isabel Yates — she was the best. n

Ode to Lexington
BY CHAD WALKER, WAREHOUSE BLOCK DEVELOPER
Lexington has been my home my entire life — I’ve never lived farther than three miles from my childhood home. But why stay planted so close? What is so special about Lexington?
Could it be the way the four-plank fences frame the rolling hills, the smells of freshly cut grass caught on the inside of your nose on a warm summer day? Or maybe it’s a brisk drive down a country road, a quick goose of the throttle, a moment of weightlessness, tall sycamores lining the roadway to watch? Maybe it’s the crackle of bacon and eggs served amongst the chatter of horsemen at Keeneland, or the counter-jockeys at Wheelers. It could be the hospitality — a cool slice of Mary Porter Pie served up with a warm smile, a la carte. Or the grit of downtown, always buzzing with potential and change and energy. And don’t forget our predecessors: Lexingtonians who paved the path with innovation and determination, all while teetering to-and-fro on the tipping point between mystery and outright scandal.
Is it the sounds of rumbling hoofs thundering down the stretch? Or the swirling smells of chocolate and mint from a freshly opened Blue Monday candy bar, or of pine trees dripping following an April shower? It could be the fortune that comes from crossing paths with characters like Griffin or Dudley or Luther or Cole or Ouita or Anita…or being Lexington enough to know who those characters are, and why each are important to us all.
Maybe it’s the annual community-wide neurosis of Big Blue Madness that afflicts our entire town. Or a look to the future of summer and Derby Juleps, a cure for any blues carried over from a season unrealized.
It’s popcorn at “The Kentucky”, a beer at “CCI,” still calling it “Commonwealth Stadium,” gentlemen shaking hands and holding doors for ladies, all with a healthy sprinkling of “y’all” scattered in for good measure.
It’s all those things, and more…oh, so much more. n

Ask the Home Services Expert with Jamie Clark
Question: Will solar panels or a backup power generator increase my home’s resale value?
Tyler H., Lexington
Answer: The short answer is YES! There are numerous studies by solar groups, realtor associations and even the US gov NREL, that highlight added home value with either solar or generators. The ROI on a solar upgrade to your home can be as high as 100% and you will save money every month for the next 30 years on top of the added home value, in contrast a kitchen or bath remodel might be only be a 70% ROI. When it comes to generators there are certain neighborhoods in Lexington that lose power often that I would not live in those areas without a generator. It’s one thing to lose power once every couple of years but some neighborhoods in town lose it several times a year and for people with medical equipment like CPAP or a oxygen generator a power outage is more than an inconvenience. Let’s face it in 2025 electricity in our homes is a necessity not a luxury.
Question: My AC is well beyond its life expectancy and every year we have to add refrigerant and spend other money on Band-Aids to keep it running. Do I keep it until it dies, or should I be proactive and go ahead and get a new systems?
J.
Sexton, Berea
Answer: To a degree, almost any machine can be kept running indefinitely if you want to keep spending money on it. AC systems are no different. I have a friend with a 1985 Chevy pickup that he keeps running even though it has no AC, runs rough, breaks down regularly and gets 8 miles to a gallon of gas! He can afford to buy something new but he has the attitude to keep it until it dies. My problem with his reasoning is with the money he spends on extra gas and repairs, he could enjoy a newer more reliable car. Your AC is no different, it may not be dead but it’s likely using 2-3 times the power than that of a new system. Having a new unit with a 10-year warranty and no breakdowns is added security, and less inconvenient than holding your breath every time the weather gets warm.
Question: Should I use a programmable thermostat is cooling season?
Big Mike, Lexington
Answer: First, love the name! Second, no! There is almost no value in a programmable thermostat in cooling mode. In our area cooling is also about dehumidifying and turning your AC back a few hours per day will allow the humidity to rise and that will defeat the purpose because it will make it harder for your AC to get the house comfortable when it tries to catch up. Pick a temperature you like and leave your thermostat alone!
