Sonoma County Fair CEO "The 2018 Sonoma County Fair is going to be very special this year as we will be honoring our first responders from the 2017 wildfires. Our theme "Salute to Heroes" is a tribute to all who worked tirelessly, day after day, saving lives and property. A special exhibit commemorating their efforts is being designed for our Garden Building. The Hall of Flowers will be a tribute to the beauty of our County with its theme "Seasons of Sonoma". Both wonderful reminders that we are Sonoma Strong! As a thank you, our first responders will be admitted free to the Fair on Monday, August 6 and Tuesday, August 7. Just present a first responder ID at the Fair gate for a complimentary admission. The 2018 Fair will be a wonderful occasion as we come together to celebrate our community spirit."

Spectacular Flower Show

Hall of Flowers

Open daily 11:00 am to 10:00 pm Closes at 6:00 pm on Sunday, August 12 At work behind the scenes for the past four months, Sonoma County's professional landscapers, landscape designers, amateur gardeners and young floral enthusiasts are busy creating a flower lover's dream come true! A flagship exhibit, the Hall of Flowers features gardens designed around a central theme.

Hall of Flowers Dedication The Sonoma County Fair is pleased to dedicate the 2018 Hall of Flowers to JR Abueg. JR began his association with the Sonoma County Fair Flower Show in the late 1980's when he began participating as an Amateur Garden Exhibitor. From there JR transitioned to working part-time as a seasonal employee, eventually becoming the Building Supervisor for the Hall of Flowers and finally the Supervisor for all the Still Exhibit buildings.

Seasons of Sonoma This year’s Hall of Flowers theme “Seasons of Sonoma” is designed to capture the beauty of Sonoma County. From the rugged coastal bluffs to the majestic redwoods, from the hillside vineyards to the iconic oak studded hills, local gardeners will show what makes “Sonoma Strong.” The centerpiece of the show is an enormous water feature with a phoenix rising, representing the resiliency of our county and its rebirth.

Though there were many things JR found rewarding about his work at the Fair, he enjoyed being able to provide as much physical and emotional support as possible to the Junior and Adult Exhibitors. He loves seeing the big smiles on their faces as they crafted their garden designs.

Hall of Flowers Preview Party

Wednesday, August 1 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm You’re invited to join as we sip on Sonoma County’s best varietals, enjoying delicious small bites, and mingling with friends and co-workers. Get an exclusive first look at the Hall of Flowers “Seasons of Sonoma” display while supporting scholarships for local students. Premium local wines will be poured. Tickets are just $35 and proceeds provide scholarships to local students in agriculture. Tickets at SonomaCountyFair.com or at the door.

10

“I am always sure to let the Exhibitors know that they were the backbone of the Fair, and it would not possibly happen without them.” JR’s dedication and positive attitude is noticed and admired by all around him. The Sonoma County Fair Board and staff are honored to thank him for his years of service and dedicate the 2018 Hall of Flowers to Romeo “JR” Abueg in recognition for his longstanding commitment to the Fair and its exhibitors. Master Gardeners of Sonoma County Exhibit Each year, the Master Gardener demonstration garden at the Sonoma County Fair is a core undertaking for the organization. It’s also one of the venues where the group makes the most contact with the public, typically engaging with several thousand people over the course of the Fair. The group’s garden theme always centers on sustainable gardening practices…showing just how beautiful a low water use, sustainable garden can be! Their garden is a must stop— always— in the Garden Courtyard if you want to learn about proper plant selection, water conservation and capture, composting, and integrated pest management. It’s also a real treat for the senses and a prime spot to simply relax and enjoy amid the bustle of the Fair.

Saralee & Richard Education Fund Gift of $1,000,000 to the Sonoma County Fair Foundation

The Saralee and Richard Kunde Barn was dedicated prior to the Fair in 2017. The two year construction project raised $3 Million for its construction, which was supported by many local individuals, businesses and our local Agriculture community. The dream of Saralee was to create an agricultural education center at the Sonoma County Event Center at the Fairgrounds, which was built in honor of the late Saralee McClelland Kunde and her late husband Richard Kunde. Through an endowment of $1 Million in 2017 by the Kunde’s to the Sonoma County Fair Foundation, the Saralee and Richard Kunde Education Fund was established. This donation will be focused on the future success of the agriculture center and the education fund. Plans are in the works to create a mentor program for our local college students majoring in the Agriculture field to gain experience during their summer recess working with local Agricultural businesses. Its goal is to enhance their educational opportunities through our local agricultural industry and give them experience and knowledge to help them hopefully return to Sonoma County upon graduation and enter the local workforce. Born into the world of agriculture, Saralee McClelland Kunde grew up as a member of 4-H where she developed her passion for agriculture. She showed off her prize winning cows at the Sonoma County Fair as a youth in the 1950’s and 1960’s, and later invested herself in the fair as an employee, eventually becoming a board member for the Sonoma County Fair and Harvest Fair. Over the years, Saralee and her husband Richard hosted and organized hundreds of events that have raised millions of dollars for agricultural charities. The couple also entered into the wine industry and became known as the first family of Sonoma County Grape Growing. In January 2014, Saralee passed away and left behind a lasting legacy of being an agricultural mentor, philanthropist, and community leader. Her husband Richard passed away in January, 2018 and had carried on her traditions and helped to develop one of her lifelong dreams. The Saralee and Richard’s Barn is a 12,000 square foot facility that was built to serve the community of Sonoma County year round as an agricultural education center to promote and showcase the nearly $4 million industry and as another venue for local group events. Visit SonomaCountyFair.com/foundation.php or call (707) 545-4200 for more information. There are still opportunities to support Ag Education Programs by sponsoring a bench ($5,000) in the Summit State Bank Olive Grove.
