St Michael's Hospice - Values & Behaviours

Page 1

Why are our St Michael’s Hospice behaviours important?

Our behaviours reflect how we interact with each other—the things we do, the words we choose, and, most importantly, the manner in which we express them.

Knowledge, Judgement & Kindness

In reaching the best possible decisions.

Courage, Integrity & Passion

In realising those decisions in the best possible way.

Honesty, Empathy & Determination

In doing so at the best possible time.

Reaching the best possible decisions...

Knowledge - What it is:

• Embracing the opportunity to learn and being prepared to be proved wrong on occasion.

• Sharing knowledge generously and actively supporting the development of others.

• Listening and understanding that everyone has a unique perspective deserving of consideration.

Judgement - What it

• Considering all available data before reaching a conclusion, taking into account what is known and what is unknown.

• Combining knowledge with common sense and emotional intelligence to inform actions and intentions - Being human.

• Questioning current beliefs and fostering a mindset of openness and curiosity. Promoting teamwork and a solutions-focused approach.

• Choosing the most appropriate course of action based on the information at hand and being open to seeking guidance and support from others.

• Continuing to question the reasons behind things and welcome reflective learning.

• Embracing change and a learning ethos, creating a safe space for mistakes and lessons to be learned without judgement, blame, or negative repercussions.

• Always showing consideration by extending dignity, respect and kindness to others. Remembering, discrimination in any form has no place at St Michael’s Hospice.

Realising those decisions in the best possible way...

Kindness - What it is:

• Always being kind. Respect everyone, including yourself. Never forget that kindness can brighten someone’s day.

• Remembering that everyone is doing their best. We all experience off days, but they don’t define us. Let’s be conscious of this and share kindness with one another.

• Adopting a welcome attitude and consistently demonstrate thoughtfulness towards others.

Courage - What it is:

• Being brave enough to openly share thoughts, suggest new ideas, and constructively challenge the status quo.

• Being able to tackle concerns and difficult truths constructively.

• Staying authentic to yourself and the ethos of St Michael’s Hospice; use your voice to advocate for the good.

• Kindness can be expressed through small acts of thoughtfulness, such as offering a listening ear, a helping hand, showing appreciation or a simple smile.

• Treating others as you would like to be treated. Undertake deeds and activities for the sake of doing good rather than in the hope of being recognised for them.

• Standing up and making your voice heard, resisting the temptation to conform and follow the crowd. Using your unique skills and talents to add value to the team.

• Understanding that bravery does not mean being without fear; rather, it is about conquering your fears.

Doing so at the best possible time...

Determination - What it is:

• Showing true grit and perseverance to achieve an end goal/ something important. If one method doesn’t succeed, explore an alternative approach.

• Committing to giving your all every day and showing up regardless of the circumstances!

• Doing what is right, not what is easy.

The St Michael’s Way...

• Staying focused on the purpose and mission, even in the face of challenges, and remembering why we do what we do.

• Working as a team to achieve goals. Take a break, but do not give up. Establish a healthy work/life balance. Be a role model and inspire others.
