Italian superstar comes stateside Jovanotti is equal parts rock star and rapper A

lready a superstar abroad, Italian singer/songwriter and rapper Jovanotti will make his California debut at the Santa Monica Pier’s Twilight Dance Series’ third week.

Hailing from Tuscany, Jovanotti, whose real name is Lorenzo Cherubini, has enjoyed a 20-year career that has garnered international popularity and critical acclaim, but until recently few Americans have been privy to his genre-bending, worldly stlyings.

Jovanotti began his career in the late 1980s as a rapper and DJ on Milan’s popular Radio Deejay network. As a DJ creating illegal mixtapes, he could not use his real name and dubbed himself Joe Vanotti, as he thought it sounded exotic and ItalianAmerican. As his music morphed into singer/songwriter territory in the 1990s, the name stuck and morphed into Jovanotti, literally meaning “young people” in Italian.

“The name Lorenzo Cherubini sounds, well, a bit too academic — perhaps the name of a professor,” he jokes.

In addition to DJing on radio, Jovanotti became the first Italian to work for MTV Europe in the early 1990s. With the rising popularity of “world beat,” foreign language music with a groove, MTV Europe created “Earth to MTV” with Jovanotti at its helm.

As his career unfolded throughout the 1990s, Jovanotti found influences in and inspiration from American artists ranging from Run-DMC to Stevie Wonder. His style evolved into a uniquely modern form that can be closely compared to Californian artists Michael Franti and Ben Harper.

His lyrics also began to incorporate

philosophical, religious and political issues, prompting some to label him the “Italian Bruce Springsteen” for his ability to appeal to all generations.

Before last summer, American audiences had only been able to hear a sampling of Jovanotti’s music in his collaborations with artists ranging from Juanes to The Beastie Boys to U2’s Bono. Jovanotti ranks The Beastie Boys, with whom he collaborated on a yet-to-be-released track, among his favorite artists to work with.

Jovanotti brought his international flavor to America last summer with a residency in Greenwich Village in New York City, playing a string of 16 gigs and assembling a U.S.based band comprised of trumpet, bass, guitar, keys, drums and two percussionists.

The acclaim from his New York shows spun into a wider North American tour in April and May that hit the East Coast and the Midwest and saw the European stadium headliner showcase his work in intimate club settings.

The live shows sparked his first U.S. release in December, a double album titled “OYEAH” featuring live versions of original songs spanning his decades-long career, as well as three unreleased studio takes on classic Italian songs re-interpreted for today’s international music market.

Though Thursday night’s show and a concert this coming Wednesday at the Viper Room are his first two live shows on the West Coast, Jovanotti is no stranger to Los Angeles. His last studio album, 2008’s award-winning, multi-platinum “Safari,” was partially recorded in Los Angeles. He also travels extensively in search of new

influences, documenting these experiences in best-selling books in Italy.

After his Los Angeles shows and a third show in San Francisco on Sunday, Jovanotti will return to Los Angeles to spend the rest of his summer working on his next studio release.

Santa Monicans heading to Thursday night’s show will be treated to a wild, energetic and interactive performance that breaks language barriers — though he will be singing in multiple languages, including English — with universal messages.

“An outdoor festival setting, on a beautiful beach, will be like bringing a slice of a Jovanotti show in Italy to Southern California,” he said.

Jace Everett Singer/Songwriter Indiana-born, Texas-raised, singer/songwriter Jace Everett became enamored by both gospel music and the works of Willie Nelson in his teenage years.

Jace’s upbringing in the evangelical church and his far-flung travels are apparent in his songs: “The church is where I learned about music, played bass and did my first real public singing … where the girls thought I was really cool. I’ve always been attracted to emotionally and spiritually mature themes — philosophically and musically…”

Jace’s song “Bad Things” is the theme song, heard over the opening montage, of “True Blood,” HBO’s most successful series since “The Sopranos.” As the third season begins, Jace releases his own new album “Red

Revelations” and hits the road playing these songs. Everett’s music evokes the complex, vividly emotional terrain of his diverse influences and springs from the same sources of inspiration, contradiction and risk; Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, Jim Morrison, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Marvin Gaye. www.jaceeverett.com

Ana Tijoux Chilean Rapera Chilean hip-hop artist Ana Tijoux was born in France to a French mother and a Chilean father while they were living in exile during the Pinochet dictatorship. After the return to democracy, the family moved back to Chile. While studying literature in school, Anita began immersing herself in Santiago’s hip-hop underground.

Rhyming first in French, then later in Spanish, Tijoux found “… a platform to talk about all kinds of things” in a way that was cathartic.

Tijoux is one of those rare rappers who actually carry a tune as gracefully as she can craft a lyric. Her singing abilities have caused her to be recruited to perform on tracks with the Argentine electronic-tango-alternative group Bajofondo, and to pair up with Mexican rocker Julieta Venegas on her hit song “Eres Para Mi.” She has developed a growing following for her jazz-inflected, ‘90s trip-hop, unusually melodic rapping and witty, politically savvy lyrics. Parking is available in the 1550 Pacific Coast Highway Lot, on a first-come, firstserved basis. There is no parking permitted on the Pier Parking Deck.

There are also a number of city structures located in nearby Downtown Santa Monica.

Bike valet There is a free bike valet located next to the beach bike path just south of the Santa Monica Pier.

Seating Seating is not provided. You are welcome to bring beach chairs and blankets and sit on the pier deck or the beach. We ask that you bring low beach chairs so not to block the view of other concert-goers. Many people do sit on the sand at the beach below the pier deck.

Alcohol consumption is not permitted on public spaces; however, there are several full service bars on the pier and there will be a wine garden at each of the concerts.

First aid/lost and found Pets Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.

Smoking Smoking is permitted in designated areas only. There are two designated smoking areas in the general vicinity of the concert.

One area is designated in the south east corner and one in the south west corner.

Tickets No ticket or reservation is necessary for the concerts. And all of the concerts are free. However, should you find yourself wanting to express your appreciation for the concerts you are welcome to make a tax deductible contribution the Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corporation either by donating online at santamonicapier.org or in person at one of the concerts by going to the pier booth.

W

hen John McCreery landed the first yellowtail a week before the pier opened in 1909, word spread quickly — the Santa Monica Pier was one of the finest fishing spots on the coast. Not a day passed that the Municipal Pier wasn’t crowded with anglers waiting to hook a halibut, perch, corbina or another finned prize. About the same time, an eighty-two-year-old man boasted that he fished at the pier twice a day, and would do so until the day he died. He did.

Swarms of children regularly went to the pier after school to try their luck at landing some sort of sea creature. In July of 1910, a husband/wife team wrestled a thirty-five pound black sea bass onto the pier deck, the largest fish landed at the pier to that date.

Fishing gear ranged from primitive “jack poles” and “knuckle-busters” to the more elaborate rods ‘n’ reels — whatever could effectively haul a hooked critter up from its Pacific home was considered fair tackle. Small shops — stands, really — cropped up along the deck offering pole rentals and bait for sale, the first business enterprises on pier.

Some members of the fishing community assumed territorial behavior. Arguments erupted over fishing spots.

But when the Looff Pleasure Pier was built adjacent to the Municipal Pier in 1917, a big group of fishermen were infuriated. The deck of the new pier was laid directly over the best haven for croakers in the entire bay. Captain Al Green, superintendent of the Municipal Pier, quickly retracted a joking suggestion that the fishermen cut holes in the wooden deck and drop their lines through to the ocean (much like ice fishermen do on frozen winter lakes) for fear that some irate anglers would take him seriously and pose a hazard to pedestrians.

On June 23, 1922, W.H. Bakerbour landed a fish shattering all previous records. The fish, a 450-pound black sea bass, took over an hour and every ounce of Bakerbour’s strength to land. The pier experienced a run on these fish in the early 1920s, but fishermen on sport fishing boats caught them more often. Sometimes referred to as Sea Hippos, the fish could reach a length of eight feet, weigh over five hundred pounds and could live to be over sixty years old.

For anglers who weren’t satisfied with simple pier fishing, boating operations offered daily service from the pier’s west end. In the summer of 1921 Captain Thornton J. Morris began the pier’s first fishing excursion boat operations. T.J., as he was known, offered private charters aboard the sixtyfoot cabin cruiser Ursula and the speedboat [[Josie M.]] and within a couple of years he expanded the fleet, adding the sixty-foot Ameco, the Palisades, and W.K. Competition

followed. By the mid-1920s the pier offered sportfishing fare aboard boats such as Dick Hernage’s Scandia and Bright I, Olaf Olsen’s Harold O. and Viking and Scotty Lacade’s Kitty A. For those less adventurous about taking a day trip, but still willing to brave deeper waters, a small fleet of fishing barges was anchored in the bay and fishermen took water taxis to reach them.

Sportfishing and barge businesses thrived on the pier for the next several decades until their popularity began to wane in the 1960s. In the late 1970s, the last barge in the bay, the Varga, released its last passengers and was towed away. As it departed, the pier’s boating operations shrunk to two sportfishing boats: Bill Pelton’s Indiana and Karl Demmit’s Kiaora, each of which continued to operate until the storms of 1983 effectively put an end to all of the pier’s boating operations.

Anglers remain the most loyal visitors to the pier.

Occasionally a run of bonito will swarm the pier, jolting it full of so much energy and life that it’s easy to conjure the excitement of those days when the pier was the fishing capital of Santa Monica Bay. Perhaps that’s the real reason fishermen come to the pier each day — any day might be that day.

The tragic tale of the Morris fleet T.J. Morris, the man who started it all, was the pier’s most unfortunate fisherman — tragedy struck him in threes. First, on the night of April 3, 1924, the Ursula broke free from her mooring and began to drift out to sea. Morris, determined to rescue his prized boat, caught up to her in a small skiff, climbed aboard, and attempted to start her gasoline engine.

The engine backfired, ignited the Ursula and nearly took his life. Morris was able to escape the floating inferno, drifting away aboard the same skiff he rowed out on. Fishermen on the Municipal Pier rescued him later. In 1926, the Morris flagship Ameco broke her mooring during a February storm.

The boat drifted into the Municipal Pier, battered against the pilings hard enough to cause extensive damage to the pier, and ultimately was smashed to bits.

On April 8, 1926, Captain Morris again found himself chasing after one of his vessels. This time it was the W.K. that broke loose in a storm and found itself on a course bent on ramming into the pier. Morris and two crewmen, Leo Gregory and Paul Brooks, jumped aboard a small skiff and set forth to rescue the drifting ship. As the three men approached the W.K. a massive breaker overturned the skiff, casting all three men into the sea. Moments later they reached and righted the skiff, as a growing crowd on the pier watched. Captain Morris struggled to save one of his crewmen, so his son-in-law Jack Duggan quickly organized a rescue party. The team rowed toward the accident while lifeguards jumped into the ocean from the beach, carrying rescue cans to help the struggling sailors.

All efforts were futile. The crew disappeared from sight.

Leo Gregory was the first to be found as he lay dying underneath the Crystal Pier, about a half-mile south. The bodies of Paul Brooks and T.J. Morris were recovered a few days later.

The W.K. fared far better — she washed ashore several hundred yards away from the pier.

There is no greater star in Indian popular music today than Kailash Kher, a revered singer whose prodigious vocal gifts and inspiring personality have made him a household name across the subcontinent.

Kailash Kher’s 2004 meteoric rise from a humble upbringing outside of New Delhi to being appointed a judge for the 2008-09 season of “Indian Idol” is nothing less than remarkable. It is also a testament to the strength and appeal of what is undeniably one of the most unique voices in Indian music today.

While Kailash studied Classical Indian music in his early years, it was the traditional folk songs sung by his father that exerted the most influence on the young artist. In 2001, after a foray into the business world, Kailash left New Delhi for Mumbai, home to the highly competitive Bollywood film and music industry. Kailash’s first recording was an advertising jingle for a diamond company, made for the equivalent of $100. After recording a handful of jingles, the raw, earthy and soulful strength of his voice caught the attention of every production house and film composer in Mumbai. By 2004, Kailash had been catapulted to stardom, performing on some of the biggest hits in Bollywood.

Kailash has been heard in over 60 soundtracks and near 200 jingles.

After being introduced to brothers Naresh and Paresh Kamath, fixtures of the Indian rock and jazz scene, they formed Kailash Kher’s Kailasa, combining Kailash’s strong traditional folk sensibilities and lyrics that invoke Sufi-mystical dimensions with Naresh and Paresh’s more modern rock, electronic and funk influences. Kailasa can be heard to best advantage on their first American release, for the elite Cumbancha Records imprint. The album, “Yatra (Nomadic Souls)” features re-recorded and remixed classics alongside never released new material.

Rickie Lee Jones is one of the most singular artists in today’s music world. A clue to defining her iconoclasm comes from her own family description as “lower-middleclass-hillbilly-hipster.” From her emergence on the national scene in 1979, Rickie Lee has become one of the most acclaimed and talented singer/songwriters of our time spanning many genres: folk, rock, jazz, soul, spoken word and pop. Her first self-titled album launched her career and received five Grammy nominations. Her nominations included Best Song, for “Last Chance Texaco,” Best Album, Best Pop Vocal and Best Rock Vocal. As it happened, she won Best New Artist, and her career was launched. Just four months after her debut, Rickie Lee graced the cover of Rolling Stone, and again only 18 months later.

Her most recent releases are “The Sermon on Exposition Boulevard” (2007), on which Rickie Lee and her collaborators have put Christ’s words into a modern-day context, portraying those words in a way that anyone can understand and “Balm in Gilead” (2009).

As one of the most admired and respected guitarists in blues, R&B and rock music, Mick Taylor’s distinctive, elegant slide guitar work graces some of the key albums in rock ‘n’ roll history. Mick Taylor’s biggest impact and recognition came when he joined the ranks of illustrious alumni of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, accepting the Rolling Stones’ offer to replace founding member Brian Jones in 1969. The Stones had already established their reputation as “the greatest rock ’n’ roll band” in the world, having just released the classic “Beggar’s Banquet.”

Taylor quickly added his imprint to the Stones and was present for the legendary concert tours through 1974.

Mac Rebennack burst onto the rock ‘n’ roll scene in the late 1960s as Dr. John, the Night Tripper, merging the R&B, voodoo rhythms and chants of his native New Orleans to create a persona perfect for the psychedelic era. Over the years he’s thrown in jazz, classic American songbook, zydeco, boogie woogie and rock into the mix.

One word sums up the Tom Nolan Band’s mission: “Dance!” Long-time local favorites, TNB boasts a world class rhythm section, great singers and soloist, and an intense stage show. TNB brings people to their feet playing a mix of originals and classic dance tunes which blend soul, blues, R&B and rock ‘n’ roll.

Originally from New Orleans Eddie Baytos can be said to be from N’Wahlins via Hollywood.

Beatlesfest Beatlesfest, a three-day tribute that began five years ago, is proud to be a part of the Twilight Dance Series this summer! Abbey Road will open the night with an acoustic set of the Beatles, followed by Los Angelesbased Led Zepagain, as part of the British Invasion.
