SPECIAL SERVICES ADULT EDUCATION CENTER

The Adult Education Center invites the community to attend our evening schedule of classes provided Monday through Thursday each week, and daytime classes in ESL which are offered at local school sites. We will be adding to our class offerings and welcome input from the neighborhood on topics of interest. Our first effort will be the addition of exercise and dance classes starting this fall. CHILD DEVELOPMENT SERVICES When does your day begin? Is it when the alarm clock strikes, the first cup of coffee, or maybe a gentle tug on your blanket? Your child’s academic day typically begins around 8:30 a.m., and most of us are in the office about a half-hour later. But tucked into the corner of most SMMUSD elementary school campuses are the CREST and preschool programs, and their day begins well before the first bell rings. At 7 a.m., children begin signing in to CREST child care, and at 8 a.m. many of our preschool programs start. In fact, CDS will “take care” of about 1,250 children during non-school hours for the 2008-09 academic year. All programs include certificated teachers, trained assistants, and administrative support directly from the CDS office.

Each classroom develops weekly lesson plans that enhance the state standards curriculum found in K-5 classrooms, and chil-

dren are independently assessed with a state tool known as the Desired Results Developmental Profile to keep us informed of their academic and social progress. It may sound technical, but it’s also fun. CREST programs include snacks and plenty of time to socialize with friends; preschool includes a meal (either breakfast or lunch) and field trips, among lots of other things.

Best of all, programs are free to eligible families and there are sliding scale fees for all financial needs. District preschool teachers are planning to work with kindergarten teachers to ensure a smooth transition for children as they move from preschool to kindergarten. Preschool teachers will be using similar math concepts and vocabulary allowing children to enter kindergarten already familiar with the curriculum. CREST teachers will be improving communication with classroom teachers about the math curriculum in order to enhance student learning during the afterschool program, especially with homework assistance. OFF CAMPUS LEARNING CENTER The SMMUSD Off Campus Learning Center offers middle and high school students an alternative placement in a smaller learning environment. Students cover the district’s core curriculum with the goal of returning to their home, referring high school. The Independent Studies Program offers a flexible instructional schedule to meet the individual needs of students. Building excitement Boys & Girls Club, school district set to break ground on new Clubhouse he Boys & Girls Club project at John Adams Middle School (JAMS) is scheduled to break ground on Sept. 11 at 4 p.m.

This brand new 9,000-square-foot Clubhouse, (created in partnership with the Santa MonicaMalibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) and the Rotary Club) will provide students a fun place to learn, socially interact and bond with their peers in a safe, structured and supervised environment.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica has been in existence since 1946, providing youth development programs to students regardless of their economic circumstances. In fact, Allan Young, president of the club, and a 60-year Santa Monica resident, grew up as a part of the club himself and knows the inherent value it provides.

The new JAMS project was conceived by Young and John Deasy (the former superintendent) and was first proposed as modular units. The original budget for the modular project was $300,000, however the state of California does not allow modular units to be in place if the intended use spans over five years — this is a particular standard that is

imposed for earthquake safety — and so it was determined that a new building needed to be constructed.

Costs for the project rose from $300,000 to almost $3 million however the money has been raised through generous grants and the dedicated efforts of the Rotary Club and the SMMUSD combined.

A project of such immense scope has many good people behind it. Among the catalysts for the project include Wade Killefer the architect on the project, Loren Bloch — a volunteer contractor — and Aaron Young, the B&G Club chief operating officer. Their tireless efforts made the project become reality.

The final approval from the school district came on July 27.

“Since then,” Young said, “we’ve started working with Tim Cuneo (the new interim superintendent) and he’s been extremely supportive.”

The Boys & Girls Club facility at JAMS will provide many diverse after school programs. It will feature a technology center, robotics, a computer repair station, social recreation area, an arts center, an education center, programs

in digital and language arts, a sound studio and even a juice bar. Full- and part-time staff will be on site, as well as a full-time education director who will work to coordinate all the tutoring and assistance.

Another unique feature of the B&G Clubs are their specialty teen programs such as “Leaders in Training” wherein students learn leadership skills and then volunteer (with verifiable hours) at their church, school, or the Boys & Girls Club making them eligible to receive rewards such as trips to Lake Tahoe, Disneyland or Magic Mountain.

“This program,” Young said, “is based on a work ethic.”

The facility will be open to all students, six days a week. The hours are: 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., (they will close the Club during school hours) as Young, said, “We don’t want anyone sneaking over there during school.”

The facility will also be open during lunch, after school till 7:00 p.m., and then on Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The fee per student for this program is a mere $10 dollars a year, making it extremely affordable. This fee will entitle the student to a

“membership card” which will allow him or her access to the facility. There are no added fees or costs associated with this program. In addition, the membership card will allow the students access to any of the eight Boys & Girls Clubs already in existence throughout the city. Boys & Girls Clubs facilities are located at the following sites: The Main Branch on Lincoln Boulevard, Roosevelt and McKinley elementary schools, Lincoln Middle School, Santa Monica High School, and in public housing units on Pacific Street and on Berkeley Street.

The B&G Club is a great resource; not just for kids but also for single parents who may need to drop their children off early or pick them up late, or for parents whose children require extra tutoring but who lack the financial resources to supplement their child’s curriculum.

The B&G Club, Young said, “Has been providing children with tried and tested enrichment programs that enhance their lives.”

The JAMS facility will be a welcome addition to this already remarkable youth development organization.

This bond measure, which passed in November 2006, calls for asbestos and mold removal, roof repair, upgrades to fire safety equipment, replacement of outdated bathrooms and plumbing, and classroom seismic safety.

Over the past year, SMMUSD and Parsons/CCM (Parson’s key team member is California Construction Management) — the program/construction manager for the six to eight-year, $300 million bond measure program — have been working together to develop a district-wide capital improvement program as well as a comprehensive implementation strategy for design and construction work at all 16 schools. ”We have been working together to ensure that improvements run smoothly and efficiently as well as maximize the greatest possible potential within the available funding,” said Tom Tomeoni, Parsons/CCM Program Manager.

Parsons/CCM is responsible for managing the entire program budget and schedule and will ultimately manage the construction of each project. Parsons/CCM coordinates the work of various specialty consultants as well as the interface with jurisdictional agencies, local utility companies, legal counsel, and district representatives.

Parsons/CCM assisted SMMUSD with the selection process for architectural, engineering, and other specialty consultants. The detailed design phase has begun at seven sites, including Edison Language Academy, John Adams Middle School (JAMS), Lincoln Middle School, Malibu Middle and High School, Santa Monica High School (Samohi), Washington Child Development Center, and Olympic High School. Each site has its own architectural team to oversee improvements.

“The architectural firms were chosen based upon several criteria, including the quality of their design work, their commitment to sustainable design, and their successful experience completing other school projects,” explained Julia Hawkinson, Parsons/CCM Deputy Program Manager.

District staff, along with the architectural teams, met with committees at each school to determine what improvements were required based upon the needs of each school.

Edison Elementary School At present, the school sits on the south side of the campus. The plan is to build a brand new school on the north side of campus, then tear down the existing site and complete the project with new playing fields. The site will contain a new library, which will include accessible community spaces and after-hours study areas for students. This site, as well as all others, will be designed with sustainability in mind, including considerations to incorporate natural lighting and ventilation, solar panels, outdoor learning-teaching areas, environmentfriendly materials, and storm water mitigation measures.

John Adams Middle School (JAMS) The existing administration offices will be relocated into a new space. Nine new classrooms will replace aging existing classroom wings. Landscaping improvements will also

make JAMS more inviting by using extensive planting and user-friendly hardscape. Santa Monica College (SMC) is currently installing new synthetic turf at the athletic fields. An addition is already undergoing construction under a joint use agreement with the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Monica.

Lincoln Middle School The one-story west wing of the campus will be removed to make room for a new two-story classroom building with a state-of-the-art library designed with community access and after-hours study areas for students. The current main building second floor area housing the library will be converted into new science labs and classrooms. If the budget permits, athletic facility improvements, including a new synthetic surface for the playing field, will also be constructed.

Malibu High School and Middle School This project involves removing the existing administration, library, and classroom building and replacing it with a new three-story structure that will house administration offices, instructional spaces, and an expanded library.

The “E” Building on the east side of the campus will be modernized to facilitate state-ofthe-art technology and newly refurbished classroom areas. If the budget permits, the track and field will be upgraded with synthetic turf. Plans are also under way to build a new parking lot and light the existing field and track. A primary focus of the design is to create a distinct middle school entry and classroom area separate from the high school areas of the campus, creating entries and gathering spaces specifically for middle school students.

Washington This site, which currently houses Child Development offices and a pre-school, will be renovated to create two new classroom spaces

on the west side of the campus. New office spaces will be developed in existing space on the east side of the campus. The parking lot and fencing will be redesigned to create safe access for all programs located on the facility.

Olympic High School This project will focus on modernization and room renovations. Olympic’s outdoor areas will be beautified. The perimeter of the campus will be treated with landscaping to increase security. Interior modernization will focus on, among other projects, restoring the historic library into a media center with a computer lab and creating a designated science classroom and lab.

Santa Monica High School Phase 1 includes construction of new science and technology buildings on the northeast side of campus. The softball field will be relocated as well. In anticipation of future phases, the Michigan Avenue Corridor will be enhanced, leading pedestrians and cyclists directly to Fourth Street and the Civic Center during non-school hours. Future anticipated phases include replacing the athletic fields and restoring sweeping ocean views. Due to the comprehensive and extensive nature of the long-range planning for the campus, Samohi is still in the schematic design phase, but is catching up fast with the rest of the program.
